A Calif. Zephyr in Ft. Morgan on 30AUG2024

- Remembering to "Push the little red button" today, I captured this California Zephyr making is station stop in Fort Morgan at 0558 MDT (15 min. late). P42s #171 & #170 hauled the 8-car consist to a stop with car 7 to the parking area platform for 4 departing passengers. 3 were at the ready and the 4th had to be found and escorted.
With the station work safely completed, the high ball was given and on a clear signal, the Zephyr departed for Union Station in Denver as its next stop on the journey to Emeryville, CA.
My thanks to the operating crew for the greetings today.

Please note the passenger hanging out of the door window of car 8 (last car). That is a major no-no. It is grounds for being tossed from the train in some town you don't want to be. Look out the window - yes. Open the window - no!

Good morning Mike. Nice looking day for the Zephyr passengers. Pretty busy around here. My grandson is getting married in Annapolis MD today, coming here on Sunday and we will host a reception for all the Colorado relatives on Monday. Big weekend for us all. Opening the window?! On my 1985 trip on #5 that detoured through the Feather River Canyon route (yeah, a rail fan’s dream), I took hundreds of pictures through the open windows. That was a big trip with two double bedrooms en-suite. The car attendant was Mr. Mancini who knew we were going to be on that trip as a neighbor who worked for Amtrak had pulled some strings. Specifically, our sleeper was to be canceled, but the neighbor got it put back on. I fondly remember the wonderful smells as #5 rolled through the FRC at about 25 mph. Besides the obvious dangers of opening the windows, one must avoid hanging out the window when the compressor discharges “liquids” from the holding tank!
Good morning, Rich; I thank you for tuning in along with the comments. I watched a conductor throw a passenger off in Iowa for doing what that fella did. They have signage on the doors about not opening at any time. Oh well. That trip was a rail fan's dream. I would have really enjoyed that trip.
There is something about the aroma of compressor lube in the morning. LOL!! But the fragrances from the Canyon would be totally different.
I do like the smells from the diner when they stop here. Gets me ready for breakfast. Much different from the reek of the Cargill meat processing plant that happen here.

The train stopped in some little town that wasn't a station stop to see him off. Fort Morgan has seen its share of passengers who departed the train in unfavorable fashion only to be met by local law enforcement.

Good morning, Mark; I thank you for tuning in as well as the comments. I saw the rain coming down at Burlington early this morning. They seem about to be washed into the river over there. Nice to read the cooler weather got there. Enjoy as the hot stuff is right behind it. We go back into the 90s tomorrow and on thru the weekend. At least the temps. take a break without long runs in the 90s. Yet we still have at least three more weeks of official summer to go. And then some follow-on higher temps. Oh well. The snow will fly soon enough.

Secretly, that's what I wanted to do last fall. Wave at Mike, out the open window, as we rolled into Ft Morgan. My roomette was just too comfy, and I wasn't that mobile, but, you definitely knew we were there.
Beautiful day there, and here. Big storms came through about midnight,. They usually split around us, but, not last night. Quite vicious sounding, but, I don't believe there was any damage in our area. Today it is 75° at noon. Much cooler.

Good evening, Jean; I apologize for not replying sooner. I didn't see this comment. Time to take the glasses back and get the eyes checked again. I used to head for the restroom and the hopper where I could look down at the tracks whizzing by. Didn't dare open the door window. Those darn conductors were always right there. But I am like you. A secret wish to hang out the window like the conductors did.
It was a really nice day here with very low humidity (12 %) and just upper 80s for the temps. Tomorrow the humidity will remain very light, but the temperatures will run back into the mid 90s. I think it will be a ay spent watching the Paralympics again. I am learning a lot from the exposure they are getting this year. Also have the NHRA US Nationals from Indy on TV as well. Its only qualifying and specialty races but always fun.
I hope that you had a decent day after all the thunderworks back there.

Good morning, Gerald; Thank you for dropping by as well as the comments today. I'm unsure what happened there. At least they found him, so his ride didn't have to chase the train into Denver. It is really nice to still have the house opened up with cool, fresh air coming thru the windows. It will be time to start closing up in about an hour or two.
Even if I miss a train, I still have fun with it. I found a long time ago that if you can't laugh at yourself, then don't do it. I am sure there will be a repeat somewhere down the road of life.

Now, if I can remember which one it was. LOL!! As for the coffee, all is ok. I miss the original blend from an outfit named "Coda Coffee". But at least it isn't Hills Brothers or Yuban.

We have some low 90s coming back next week. At least they are not clumped together. You are right. Summer is still cooking for at least another 3 to 4 weeks yet.

Hi Mike -It’s cloudy out maybe rain; it’s been going around us. Done with Dr. stuff til mid Sept. My bloodwork was good, everything within range 6.2 for my A1C!!! And my husband’s liver is okay, no biopsy. I got excited yesterday seeing a lead CP engine watching La Plata-happy to see that after the strike. Does a CP engineer work the engine on a BNSF line?? We are seeing a lot of NS engines on run thru here. Paying back a lot of KW hrs. CPKC once in a while and I don't recall any CN markings here. They are manned by BNSF operators. AMTRAK does the same if they have to use power from the host railroad. The AMTRAK operators run the engines.
I plan on staying home this weekend as well. NHRA Nationals are on TV from Indy and there are too many Andy Granatelli wannabes on the highways. Y=The Laor Day gas prices have hit here as well. If I don't have to travel, I won't.

And you know me, my comment posts tend to me from the previous days runs 🤣 I agree with the you and the others; not a smart move to open window for whatever, especially on camera 🤣 We've been a little cooler in Houston the past 2 days - 80's rather than 90's. Scattered daily showers from a visiting low pressure system. Its been nice. Calling for 85F tomorrow. Currently were currently 78F with clear skies in Houston. At least the latecomer's ride didn't have to chase the train into Denver and the mess downtown there. I don't think he would have been allowed to ride on that far. Oh well.
