I have lost, in just four months, my best friend and the my father. soon after my 8 year long relationship broke up, offcourse she left me. It was last year. As i struggled to fall asleep every single night my mind was exploding with bad thoughts, fears and complete emotional chaos. in all the mess last verse just came up repeating in my head and next day i red whole poem until i learnt it byheart. it s my personal prayer and it will be forever. My own mind processed it as a salvation.

We don't know how strong we are until our strength is all we have my friend. It always amazes me how powerful words can be, the pen will always be mightier than the sword and boy did William put these words together in a phenomenaly powerful way ! God bless you brother and don't let anyone keep you down.

All I can say is....this poem comes to me when I'm high or low, happy or sad. Bad times and death are visitors to all our lives...,this poem reminds us we can stick two fingers up to this - we all taste pain and sorrow - how we face it is the test.

    Invictus
    By: William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
    Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

I had the opportunity to walk around Robben Island not as a tourist but a visitor. It is one of the most profound experiences of my life. There are those little things you see that make you realise what men like Tambo, Sisulu and Madiba sacrificed for their principles. To come out of that place with conciliation as your message takes a lot of courage. People will talk about the armed struggle that these men initiated before they went in but they could have easily taken it up when they came out. They put a lot aside for a peaceful transition. The movie never truly captured the atmosphere of 1995, but this poem means a lot to me.

I never had role models. This world has disappointed me once too often to trust them. But considering his history, Mandelas non-violent protest always impressed me deeply. This world has lost a messenger of peace. Someone who provided understanding among nations.

I don't hate Mandela, but he didn't did only non-violent protests. He later became a terroist and bombed places. Not to denounce him, but to reveal the full story of him. He was not jailed for opposing the regime, but because of treason and sabotage.

It makes me think about all of the times that someone has tried to bring me down and how I fought back, took control, and became the master of my fate, and the captain of my soul. I love this poem which I was introduced to during one of the darkest times of my life by my daughter. To me it means that no matter what Fate throws at me it will be MY Choices regarding how I handle the bludgeonings of chance which Define if I am truly the the master of my ultimate fate and am responsible for the care of my Soul.

unbelivable how this poem touches me and goes right into my mind and everytime I think someone made me weak or it is someone's fault that I am sad, these sentences are remembering me of the fact that everything about you is your fault and your responsibility. And If you are happy you are proud because you know that you are the one who made you happy!

  • @texed4250

    My interpretation on the poem:
    1. Although I'm going through hell in my life, I thank whatever deity or deities that is helping me to overcome them.
    2. Although it hurts really bad, I never shown it through my expression nor have I complained. Even when I'm hit by surprise, I'm still standing with a bloody head as if nothing happened.
    3. After this rough life of the living only remains, The fear of the afterlife, but the suffering I have gone through year after year, has made me looked and looking forward to the afterlife without fear.
    4. Although the scriptures tells us that a few will find this narrow way that leads to everlasting life, and that those whose not on it will suffer hell and suffering, it doesn't matter to me because I am the one that controls when I die, and I am the master of my life.

Texed I feel like your religion is too ingrained into your mind. The point is not that deities are helping him to overcome his problems, not that they are helping him, but that they already gave him all he needs, his will to overcome adversity. This is not a story of a man who submits to god to be protected, but one who is the master of himself. He faces adversity, but is invictus, unconquered, in the face of it. No matter what life throws at him, he will not be defeated, because he is the master of his fate, the captain of his soul.

I dont think this is some kind of a religious poem about afterlife.
Its about the strength of our souls and our duty to navigate them through the troubled waters of our life, like a captain.
I guess being like a captain to your soul, is maybe the most wise insight about life I have ever heard of in a poem.
This is one really good advice and so full of wisdom if you think about it.

The Poet suffered immeasurable physical pain. From the age of 12 Henley suffered from tuberculosis of the bone which resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee. his work over the next eight years was interrupted by long periods in hospital because his right foot was also diseased. Henley contested the diagnosis that a second amputation was the only way to save his life by becoming a patient of the pioneering surgeon Joseph Lister. This poem is about the suffering he endured!

For those that don't know the poem's history, it was written by William Ernest Henley in 1875. Henley contracted tuberculosis, and had to have his leg was amputated in order to save his life. He wrote this poem as he lay in hospital. Invictus is the Latin word for "Unconquered".

Freeman's voice is great because it doesn't have the imprecision of many black voices. He articulates well and has a gentle spirit. You can't help but like his clear-headed approach to things. He doesn't sound like an angry person rather like an understanding person with a good intelligence. He seems to imply that he could understand most things without judging. That is quite some quality these days.

Every choice we make defines who we are and others have a right to judge us by our choices. We have the freedom to be different in the future than we've been in the past if we choose to be or the freedom to remain as we've been, We have the freedom to make sacrifices for a greater good if we so choose, but what defines good is always in the end our own judgment, beyond which it is not our judgment to make.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

a person of Nelson's stature of spirit is badly needed in Israel and Palestine.
Nelson and the people of South Africa have shown it can be done, in fact
Nelson would have been powerless without the people's support :)

@1chrisy the author was diagnosed with an incurable disease (I can't remember what it was, leukemia I think) and had his leg amputated. You would of thought back then he would have had a terrible life but he lived very long. The poem is him basically saying no matter what life throws at you, keep going

"I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul"
Inspired me so much that I got it as a tattoo to remind me that I ultimately have the choice of how to live my life
