      Why do most of these EVs have a congested grill design like an ordinary car? Tesla, Lucid and Ionic seem to be the only ones that minimize that regular car and clumsy and unnecessary grill face look.
      I am an Industrial Designer. If I’m designing these cars, I’d try to add a unique identity reflecting the unique electric engineering of the car.

      Because old automakers have a lot of extra things, which can double the cost of the car. Talking about base price versus Tesla without considering what they don't have is reality skew. Texas, US experience. I purchased an Ioniq 5 simply for the looks and space. Went with awd for extra power. After driving in normal mode with a somewhat heavy foot, I experienced EPA rated range. I have recently switch over to Eco Mode, and 80% of my driving has been around 40mph, around town. I get around 320 miles with this change. I dont road trip often but my experience has been ok, better than expected at EA network. It can be improved.
    Overall I am very happy with the car, serves its purpose as a daily driver hauling around my family very well. Did consider the model Y and would have purchased one in 2021. I would not at the current price. The charging infrastructure is the single best feature of the Model Y but it does not apply that much for me. It is still hard to consider now with all the options of evs in the 40k-60k range. Too much of a premium for the Model Y, even considering standard range(potentially 60k)

      I bought an Ioniq 5 in May of 2022. Loved it, and knew I wanted to get an EV for my son and his growing family. I had a chance to test the 2021 ID 4 that summer (don't ask me why a dealer wouldn't have a current model available to test drive), and was a bit disappointed. In the fall, I was able to test the 2022 version of the ID 4, which was much improved, but the I-5 was still superior, especially for the price tag at the time.
      So I ended up getting the I-5 for my son in November of 2022.
      Prices have actually gone down significantly since then for Hyundai EVs, as supply has caught up to demand. I don't know about the VW EV pricing.

    In late June thru early July 2022, we drove my wife’s 2021 VW ID.4 PRO from Sacramento CA to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon without issue or problem.
    From there, we drove to Zion National Park. Same: no issue.
    And from Zion, back to Sac - in one day. EA worked flawlessly. The VW worked flawlessly, even in the very remote areas of northern Arizona and southern Utah. (We did use a ChargePoint in Kanab UT, as there were no EA stations around there.)
    1,500 miles all together, in some very remote, off the beaten path roads and byways. In an ID.4 PRO.

    I’d say that’s pretty impressive.

    I just completed a 5,531 mile US road trip in my 2021 Model 3 SR+.
    Over 13 days of driving (July 10 through July 31, 2022, with family time in Kentucky) from Sacramento CA to Louisville KY and back (with numerous side trips), I drove nearly half what I drive in a year.
    Shortest daily distance ~300 miles. Longest drive in a day: 650+ miles. Average daily drive ~425 miles.
    The final analysis: Wow. This is definitely a road warrior vehicle, despite so-called “conventional wisdom,” regarding range.
    I used 57 charging stops. In all those stops, I only had ONE 5 minute wait to plug in, at Glenwood Springs, CO. One. For 5 minutes. I’ve waited longer in a grocery store line. And that was a small charging station on a major interstate.
    I drove through and charged in major cities (LA, Amarillo, OK City, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake City) and many small towns and wide spots in the road. 72 kW to 250 kW.
    Typically, I was either the only one there or one of two Teslas. My typical stop was 20-25 minutes. Enough time to have a short walk about, use the bathroom, grab a bottle of water and snack, text family, and then get back on the road (these timely breaks, and the awesome auto pilot, assured I’d be rested and relaxed, even after many hours of travel).
    I charged on weekdays, weekends, rush hour, nighttime, huge supercharger (50+) or small (4), on the interstate or off some small blue highway… I drove and charged through them all. No cherry picking. (Consider also the local catastrophic climate issues in Kentucky and St. Louis during my trip home, July 26-31.)
    57 superchargers. 5,531 miles. 13 days of driving. In July, 2022. One wait. 5 minutes. Starbucks line? Bank lines? Costco gas lines? Holding on the phone? 5 minutes is a piece of cake!! And it was once, out of 57 charging stations.
    And 5,531 miles of supercharging cost me $522.00. More than charging at home. But far less than the ICE equivalent (2021 330i, RWD BMW), of $900+ at ~33 hwy mpg, premium gas. With no maintenance cost other than wear/tear on tires.
    I can’t speak for others. But I would say that’s a complete success in my book. Brilliant!

    • @ezpoppy55
      @ezpoppy55 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@RT-rv5be Again it was over 13 days. The facts are the facts. All I do is present them.
      Mind you, I’m driving the poor man’s (or in my case, the retired teacher’s) Tesla. It has the least amount of range.
      If you’re into cannonball style cross country driving, this may not work for you. But on any given day of this trip, an ICE driver would probably beat me by maybe 30-45 minutes to a set destination each day, if they took bio breaks. If they took no breaks, and had the range to drive 425 miles without stopping (which to me sounds absolutely miserable!!), then they’d beat me by 80 minutes.
      Remember that the purpose of the trip wasn’t to set a land speed record - it was to see and experience our nation.
      But, you do you. No one, least of all me, is forcing you to do otherwise. I’m just presenting facts. Not the hyperbole and bs that EVs can’t be driven across the country. They most certainly can!
      BTW, in my 50 years of driving, I’ve never arrived at any destination - even when I drove like a bat outta hell - to find a gorgeous bikini-clad model, holding a trophy, roses, and one of those super-sized checks, just waiting to plant a big wet kiss on me, “the winner.” Nope.
      The drive I made was a total blast, and I have a ton of great memories, not the least because of the stops I made to charge. But if others just want to see a blur, tell the family to “hold it!” and get there “first,” well, I’m not stopping them.

      Thanks for your detailed account of your wonderful trip. I never used cruise control on any previous car and was suspicious of using Autopilot on my MY, but I’ve been extraordinarily pleasantly surprised to find how much less tired I’ve been using it on my initial road trips. Also our pit stops have not been longer than trips in an ICE car: in an ICE car, we parked, used the restroom, got food, then gassed up, no shorter than 30 minutes in total. In the Tesla, park and plug in, and take care of business while charging.

For roadtrips you will uses the Autobahn and when the Battery goes empty just speed up to the next charger. With 100 mph (160km/h) or more the Battery will be warm enought to charge fast.

First was an i3 as a second car, and then after we bought ebikes and discovered that we really did not need two cars anymore we sold both the EV and ICE car and bought an XC40 P8. One aspect of EV ownership that no one seems to touch on in reviews is the apps that link to the car. One reason we decided it was time to ditch the i3 was the onboard cell phone for connectivity was 3G and there was no practical upgrade path from BMW. One thing I miss with the Volvo app vs the BMW is the ability re see charge history.

    Hey Kyle. You are absolutely correct that range is not an issue. I've owned a 2022 Polestar 2 dual motor for a month and a half now and took it on a thousand mile road trip from San Francisco to LA and back. The car did excellent. It got slightly better than the stated range of 250 miles because we drove on the pacific coast highway (speeds between 50 and 60 MPH, but I did drive stretches of higher speeds on highway 101). Charged up at EA every 150 miles or so and longest stretch was about 180 miles. The charge speed (if I precondition) hit 153 KW and I was able to charge about 50 KWH in about 30 minutes for the most part (some more and some less). The 30 minutes went by really fast with a bathroom break and a cup of coffee at starbucks. :) It was really fun doing a EV road trip. i wouldn't want to do a ICE road trip unless I need to be somewhere in a hurry and if that were the case, I would fly. Just sharing my first EV experience. FYI, I was going to buy a plug-in Mazda (soon to debut CX70) for my wife, but I am convinced now that we don't need a PHEV. We just don't have range anxiety anymore. I think we will buy her the Honda/Acura BEV when they come out in 2024.

    Great review. I appreciate the effort you make to understand the technical aspects of each car and you communicate it so well. IMO buying an electric car compared to an ICE car you are also buying into the charging infrastructure as well as the tech interface as these are part of the everyday experience with an EV. More range is better if it’s due to efficiency and not more heavy batteries. How many ICE car owners even know how many gallons of fuel their tank holds?

One factor about pricing, the Tesla may have the most expensive starting price BUT you pay the advertised price whereas the others may have a lower starting MSRP but in the current market dealers are asking for premiums well above MSRP for e.g. buyers of Hyundai Ionic 5 are paying $5K, $10K or even $15K above MSRP here in California due to the demand and lack of inventory.

    You talk about MSRP, but the elephant in the room are the additional dealer markups. Some cars are far easier to get at MSRP - others it is nearly impossible.
    At the end of the day, any one of these cars is pretty decent - it is more a question of what you can actually find without dealer markups and without ridiculous wait times.

    Kyle and Team, great video and I love that you include others to help you and to also provide their opinions even if they don’t agree with you. That keeps it real!!
    I suggest to create a matrix of different categories for car evaluation similar to what you have done for the driver assistance challenge that I have seen in some of your videos.
    I think people really need to get a sense of what’s like to live with one of these, day to day basic stuff. To me doing a demo of the apps is important, basic infotainment functions demo as well, charging speed actual times from 10-80% maybe, trunk and frunk volume, etc. In other words, demostrare if the specs on paper are accurate or they are not the real thing. Thanks.

    I think 2 window switches are genius. I know that I am in the minority, but I never need to worry about inadvertently putting down the back window when I want the front window down. I can't tell you how many times I have put the back window down by accident when approaching a toll booth. So from my perspective, I say "Thank you, VW for the 2 window switches". Nice review. Thank you.

    I've been fighting my wife's bias against half the brands for an EV. We've had an i4 on order, but with the tax updates, I'm wondering if she can get over our past experience with a VW dealer and the whole "diesalgate" or at least accept the Hyundai has been starting to up the quality and is worth the asking amount of the Ioniq 5. Glad to see the praise for the ID.4, I've been leaning towards that as an option if we don't stick with our BMW plan. Really glad to see the overall comparisons so I can rate what matters to me most in each car.

      I would agree with your wife about "dieselgate." I wouldn't trust a company like Volkswagen that only a few years ago lied to its customers and multiple governments at the expense of everyone's health and the environment. Their true NOx emissions were 40 times worse than their faked emissions testing let on. A brand's history matters almost as much as the spec sheet of its current products.

    My Brother-in-law. Showed me his Hyundai Ionic EV which he purchased 2 days before. He plans on charging it using his solar panels as he currently has quite a bit of excess electricity. The local electric company in California pays him for it but not at the rate they normally bill for. He says it is practically free as a result.
    He will be using some of that excess electricity in the future to water his grapes (his well is dug but not plumbed yet) but even then it will be less than feeding his car gasoline.
    He says that if they need to travel farther than the range, they will use their Prevost motorhome as they did the last time they visited us.

    The Q4 is remarkably agile. Shortest turning circle of all I believe (with the ID4). Good to maneuver. I think the MY got much improved suspensions late 2021. I wasn't shocked (pun intended) when I test drove it twice recently. The performance model gets much stiffer suspensions though and the car is dropped 2 inches lower to the ground. I would argue there's no reason to go for the performance over the long range. The LR gets plenty of performance already, keep your money :)

We’ve recently driven id4, ioniq5, and MME and I liked the ioniq5, ID4, and MME my wife liked the driving experience in the MME over the others. But the MME price is so much higher than the others. And I say that as both a Ford vehicle owner for almost 50 years, and a stock owner - the MME is priced uncompetitively. I’d like to get an EV, but as a recent retiree, cost matters.

    Nice, comprehensive video. What I didn't see mentioned was the absence of regen braking on the ID4. I test drove it last week, and was mystified by the absence of a one-pedal drive mode. I brought it to the attention of the salesperson and she was unable to shed any light on the subject. Wasn't even aware of regen braking. She said that no ID4s have regenerative braking or one-pedal driving. Can that be true?
    (To the discredit of the dealership, their test-drive ID4 was a 2021 model, and they have no plan to update to a '22 or '23 version.)

    • @User.Joshua
      @User.Joshua ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It absolutely has regen via blended braking. There’s also a “B” mode that’s very similar to one pedal driving, but it won’t bring the vehicle to a full stop.

    • @thomasklein4265
      @thomasklein4265 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, what are you talking about, put the ID4 in B mode and it brakes as soon as you lift your foot off the accelerator at full regen. It won't bring you to a full stop but it's real close to stopped. Have you even driven the car ???

    • @RickLeBeau
      @RickLeBeau 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thomasklein4265 If that question is addressed to me, here's my answer: 1) At the VW dealer where I did my first test drive of an ID 4, they only would allow test drives for the 2021 model they had on the lot. It did not have anything approaching one-pedal regenerative braking. At best, it was equivalent to Level-2 regen braking on the Ioniq 5 (Hyundai). 2) Later- a few months after I'd driven the 2021 model, I got to drive the 2022 ID 4 at the same dealer. The regen braking was much more evolved, but as you noted, does not fully stop the car- even going up hill. For contrast, the iPedal driving mode in the Ioniq 5 will absolutely bring the car to a full stop.
      My original comment here was made well before I got a chance to drive the 2022 model. It's a fine car; less intuitive for me to drive than the I-5, but the instrument panel could be learned in due time.
      I hope this answers your question to your satisfaction.

    Ioniq 5 AWD owner here. I can confirm the AWD version CAN get the same range as the RWD-only version. I suspect the EPA test cycle is done in "normal" mode where the front motor stays connected which would explain the different official ranges. However, if you drive in "eco" mode then as you mentioned the front motor is removed from the drivetrain and the range improves significantly. I have a friend with the RWD version and we've compared notes, our ranges are extremely similar if we both drive in "eco" mode. I'm currently getting much better range than advertised on paper for my car (top of the line Ioniq 5, here in Canada it's the "Preferred AWD with Ultimate")

    I think it’s important not to use MSRP Price. Most of these cars you can’t even get. Then dealers are marking them up and if you follow the market they are all creeping up in price. At this point it is virtually impossible to get a EV under $50,000. I had a Mach E that I got for a Steal but I’m trading it for a Tesla. Although Tesla is more expensive it’s still the best EV on the road. And if you look online all those cars are 50k and up none are selling at MSRP
