$20k difference between the id4 and model y is probably the biggest factor here. If they were the same price, model y hands down has all their EV bugs sorted like battery bms/ preconditioning on route, charging curve, 16v lithium ion that should last the life of the car, app control and software, drivetrain power, etc etc. The timeline of vw actually updating stuff is so slow it's kind of infuriating. Hopefully things get better and best of luck.
My uncle has had his 2022 ID4 for almost 6 months now and have had no software issues, no problems of any kind and a very solid build, Teslas charging structure is amazing but the best part of owning an EV is charging at home not at the charging station so doesn’t mean much to most people.
Most of the time I charge at home... but the 6 times a year I travel more than 800 miles no way I'd have an ID4 over my model Y. But I do respect that everyone is different and have different needs. As long as there's lots of great electric cars out there I am happy.
Appreciate you two kicking this around. I like the idea of $20k less but what I was left wondering was why, with a 2 mile "commute" your wife doesn't go for an electric BIKE (or even a non electric bike) or at least go down to one car for the two of you! It'd save a lot more $$s!
I’ve been watching your videos a lot and… I went to the Volkswagen dealer Monday. They had 3 id4. One was sold the other two were cancellations. I got one. Hehehe. Traded a v8 pickup truck for it too!!! I’ve had a Volt before. Love this id4!
I just purchased Id.4 awd pro s, love it. My wife and I looked into ionic 5, did not like, sat down, did not like the layout, and size, to small, do not like the Tesla look of the dash. We are in our late seventies, maybe that has something to do with are taste.
Hope it all works out for you, but many people have been having issues with VW software. Charging shouldn’t be an issue if most of your driving is short distances. I would think that the Chevy Volt would be a great buy also if short commutes is mainly what you use it for. Teslas may cost more, but they have the best software and charging infrastructure.
If you are going to change your car every three years, the lease payment is going to be less than the loan payment if you are buying it. So if you look at it as a subscription, how much you pay each month for a car, the lease is cheaper.
Another advantage of the ID4 is that it is one of the cheapest EVs to insure, while the Tesla Model 3 is one of the most expensive. I don't know the exact reason, but I suspect that part of the reason is that the ID4 is easier to repair. Also, I want to mention that VW has largely cleaned up their software problems in the 2023 and 2024 models. I have had a 2023 ID4 for almost 2 years, and only saw a few minor software problems, which were fixed with OTA updates.
A Model Y performance in Canada is 91k CAD. The ID4 AWD top spec is 63k CAD. And the VW gets a 5k dollar discount. The EV6 AWD top trim is 63k. I'd go with the latter 2 everyday of the week.
This.....in BC we have a provincial incentive as well. Our ID4 MSRP and options is about 57 to model Y 91. So sticker price of $34k difference, plus the $9k in incentives the ID4 qualifies for, and it's practically half price.
We also did order an ID.4 but we’re in the market for a model Y. Our decision was based on 2 factors 1.cost and 2. back seat ride quality which were a bit more important for our family. I am a fan of the Tesla integrated services but those 2 factors basically led us to a non Tesla suv type.
ID4 is an incredible value. Love mine so far. The 2023 does have a slightly different battery SK Innovation instead of LG Chem which is why it charges faster than 2022's.

Love this interview but did note one issue... Paying for 2 or 3 new expensive vehicles but yet just renting your home? Just not sure that is the best way to utilize your finances, but it sounds like you are looking to buy a home in the near future. Good luck as you guys do seem to have your heads on straight and are leaders.
9 month owner of a 2021 RWD ID4 that I lucked out and found on the lot. Love it. No major issues. Software is not the best, but I look at it as a car first. Couldn't beat the price.
I'm curious to see how non-Tesla EV Makers cope with the recent TESLA price drops. I've been looking at the Y, ID4 and E-tron myself. The AUDI interior layout suits me best but the extra $$ is hard to reconcile. And I'm talking the AWD versions. Crazy thing is playing with the TESLA pricing to still get the full $7500 IRS - in one scenario need to add the $4000 seat option to boost it to the $80,000 threshold! Ummm. Same car.
You guys mentioned his wife always running the fuel tank on E. My wife does the same thing. Every time i get in her Audi, the fuel light is on. Don’t under estimate that “intangible” value of being able to always have a “full tank” with the ability to charge at home. For my wife, not having to manage a trip to the gas station is worth a lot of her time and stress. EV all the way.
I’m going to guess that VW mitigated at least some of their software issues over time by changing some of the hardware components over time for better software performance. That would explain why earlier ID.4’s don’t seem to benefit as much by newer software builds.
Any idea how much faster the 2022 charges than 2023? quick googles were not turning up an answer. Dealer has a discount on 2022 which I thought was interesting additional savings. Not sure how much to weigh the charging difference.
Your American prices sound crazy to me. Here in Iceland the Id4 starts at 6,200,000 ISK without a heat pump, 2 wheel drive, bare bones. With upgrades it costs (4 wheel drive) and stuff it’s 8,8600,000 ISK. I literally paid 9,200,000 ISK for my Long Rang Y with extra wheels and Tires. No brained here
I had 5 tesla's and just bought an ID 4 pro S. The build quality and the drive is definitely better. Technology and performance wise the tesla is definitely better. I like how I can close the screen for the sunroof and the seats are incredibly comfortable. It's definitely not slow but the LR is a little faster
In Canada... (all prices in CDN $) The VW ID4 (275 miles of range) starts at $40,000 - $12,000 (government incentive*) = $28,000 The Tesla Model Y (330 miles of range) starts at $70,000 - $5,000 (government incentive) = $65,000 It's surprising folks are ready to pay 2.3x the price for the Tesla. Based on your experience, would you pay so much more for the Model Y? And that's after yesterday's massive price cut, the Model Y started at $85,000 before the $15,000 price reduction. * Cars under $60,000 get an additional $7,000 provincial tax credit
Nobody talks about the INSANE insurance costs of Teslas. They are absolutely OBSCENE to insure and paying 4 to 5 times to insure them completely wipes out any gas savings per year. My ID 4 Pro S AWD was only $166 / 6mo more to insure vs $1200 more for a Model Y Performance!!!
Yeah, I just realized that as well. Did not even think about the insurance costs. Mine doubled in costs. Although I did replace an 8 year old car with a new Model Y, so I guess it should go up some, but doubling seemed excessive.
I saw your wife got one too. It's definitely on my radar the next time I get a new car, which probably won't be soon since I literally got a new one two months ago. lol
VW are even giving love to their Golf i.e. Rabbit. My Golf 8, 2 years old, as part of a routine inspection, got a replacement of the infotainment system... And update to the OTA gateway. Next day I got an OTA version upgrade to the newest Golf 1899 version... All the silly issues seem to be fixed.. will probably get some new ones, as it is software...
I just had an ID.4 for a week as a loaner... It is very comfortable as well as tight like a Mercedes SUV, which is great. BUT the buttons on the steering wheel are a disaster...
The fabulous Tesla Supercharger network is just one major factor that makes any other EV a non-starter for me. I wouldn't trade my MYP for any other vehicle, bar none.
I think the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the better SUV but $10,000 is definitely hard to give up. A good local dealer also matters. Good luck, looking for that paint correction video.

I bought a First Edition for my wife. It’s the best value in EVs. I’ll probably get one for me once wife’s it’s paid off. I didn’t realize you can still get the full $7500. I thought that changed with the infrastructure bill. So you can still the full $7500? Is that for just until the end of 2022? Jeez. Leave the basement and get some sun.@@markplott4820 People with a limited budget, me included, who want to put their toe in EV water, speaking figuratively, will conclude that ID4 is good value for money. All the vehicles you mentioned above are priced a lot higher than the ID4, where one can expect to have your frunk, your advanced engineering, gigacasting (?), 4680 Structural battery pack (sounds impressive), and your fast (you win the red-light challenge) and long range. Well if you have already a Tesla anyway - and you want a 2nd car which works and is quite economic, especially if your wife don't want to be bothered with gimmicks and just drive.
Some Americans have their priorities out of whack. Why are you leasing expensive cars(a liability) when you’re still trying to save for a house(a long term asset)
Kyle, hands on the table. Is there a gun under there 😂. Kidding. Wife loves our ‘23 ID4, but lack of heat pump and battery preconditioning makes me loath it. Not that it’s easy to justify the extra $15k+ for a model Y… they’re so dang pricey
This make no sense. You are comparing a model Y performance with a slow ID.4. You should have bought the base Model Y and spend the same money or less and have a TESLA. You are crazy????
Colton is awesome! But just made a terrible decision. My neighbor has an ID 4 and has nothing but software issues. Has to be the worst software of any vehicle I have every seen
It cracks me up how many of the OS channels spend a huge amount of time critiquing VW and then literally all your friends and family end up buying an ID.4. It is a the perfect transition car when moving away from ICE. Not a perfect vehicle by any means, but the flaws are forgivable (and fixable in theory).
You're living the American Dream, Colton. Three expensive cars, two of which are electric, you rent an expensive apartment, and you dream of owning a home some day. That is completely backwards from the dreams of your grandparents, and possibly your parents. Just sayin'.
Yeah dude got it backwards. Should invest money on property and get a big house and pay off mortgages instead of leasing these toys lol. I would just get a house and buy a second hand Toyota corolla hybrid 😅
@@samjam6989 That is what I did. Got out of college, had two roommates. Paid off my student loans. Bought a 10 year old Honda. Saved for down payment on house. Bought house. Bought new car as my finances improved. Kept house as rental, bought new house. Kept second house as rental and bought new house. Rental houses are worth almost $1M more than what I owe on them, plus I get about $2K in positive cash flow from them every month. Just ordered Model Y LR, and will pick it up on Friday, paying cash.

VW probablynhas the worst software engineers in the car world. These guys should just hire google and apple software engineers or let apple or google do the software part of the car
Even further? ID4 costs about 8-12K more here in Europe with similar configuration as a Model Y. And is still slower. Of course there are always the base models. Empty. Nobody buys those.
@@azorglub ID4 GTX costs 73.592,20, Model Y costs 62.170,- Of course you can not compare a ‚slow like a turd‘ ID4 Two Wheel Drive with the Model Y. You may compare it with the Ioniq5 or EV6 2WD Models. They cost about the same. And even the 2WD slow poke costs with the same feature set as the Model Y 70.608,80 Euros. Or do you for real, honestly, compare a 128kW car with a 378kW car? You would only lie to yourself. But if that is what you want please go ahead! Every electric car is a good car.
Should have went with the KIA EV6. Far better EV all around. The ID4 lacks in so many areas even aside to the software disaster. As always to each their own, but a VW EV like an ID4 would not even be on the short list of something I would recommend to someone. I'd actually feel guilty. There are far better options out there.

The ID.4 has a ridiculously small turning circle, especially the FWD version👍
VW ID.4 specs: AWD 36.4 ft, RWD 31.5 ft. no FWD.

2miles is so short... Why dont you just get your wife an E-bike? I'd also just go with a long range cheaper model y.
I think we will go ID.4 now and maybe second gen cyber truck.
Lot of people complaining about the software issues. I found nothing wrong with my 2023 model
Please get the Model Y or Ioniq 5!
Do all these guys lease their car? Amazing.
Not waiting for the tax credit? Didn't hear anything about IRA credits.
I don’t understand how you are getting the $7,500 federal tax credit in December 2022. I haven’t heard anyone else say it works this way.
The current tax credit is still in effect for manufacturers that haven't exceeded 200k units, like VW.
And assembled in America. 2023 ID4 is built in Chattanooga, TN
in a couple of weeks? WTF, I have been waiting since Feb
Enjoy charging and lesser specs
Kyle, hands on the table. Is there a gun under there 😂. Kidding. Wife loves our ‘23 ID4, but lack of heat pump and battery preconditioning makes me loath it. Not that it’s easy to justify the extra $15k+ for a model Y… they’re so dang pricey
You probably won't tell us when you get rid of it. 🤔
ID.4 software is awful. Tesla all the way.
Hyperbole..It isn't as bad as people say. They updates the software:)
Good luck with VW's software...
Guess he doesn't go on long distance trips.
This make no sense. You are comparing a model Y performance with a slow ID.4. You should have bought the base Model Y and spend the same money or less and have a TESLA. You are crazy????
"Good luck" with VW's software😆‼️
Colton is awesome! But just made a terrible decision. My neighbor has an ID 4 and has nothing but software issues. Has to be the worst software of any vehicle I have every seen
It cracks me up how many of the OS channels spend a huge amount of time critiquing VW and then literally all your friends and family end up buying an ID.4. It is a the perfect transition car when moving away from ICE. Not a perfect vehicle by any means, but the flaws are forgivable (and fixable in theory).
Looking forward to Coleton's experience with the iD.4! Please don't partner with Logan Paul!! 😂
he will have SAME expierence as ALEX from E for Electric , who now wishes he kept his TESLAS.
If she's driving only 2 miles a day why not just buy a used car
Driving the id4 sister from Skoda called enyaq. Best car ever. Flawless until today. Drive it since 1,5 years. There is no better family EV out there. If you do not need redicolous Performance and charging speed.
Greetings from Germany.
I LOve this car!
VW probablynhas the worst software engineers in the car world. These guys should just hire google and apple software engineers or let apple or google do the software part of the car
Once Tesla drops its prices back down to earth, the competition gonna suffer.
even IF Tesla was $5,000 more , its a better value.
Even further? ID4 costs about 8-12K more here in Europe with similar configuration as a Model Y. And is still slower. Of course there are always the base models. Empty. Nobody buys those.
@@wolfgangpreier9160 the only reason to buy an ID4 over a model Y is because it's cheaper.
@@azorglub ID4 GTX costs 73.592,20, Model Y costs 62.170,-
Of course you can not compare a ‚slow like a turd‘ ID4 Two Wheel Drive with the Model Y.
I Agree 100 %!
I hope you enjoy a car that I’m helping to pay for through the Fed Tax credit.
Prefer Tesla Model Y. The whole ID serie is way too expensive, has software issues, poor battery management, etc. VW ist kaput...
Just sold my ID4 for a tesla, awful software
I did the same!
Most people use Android Auto or Carplay so the UI and software are a bit irrelevant.
EVs are all 20k too expensive and still destroy the earth.
I love mine- zero complaints! 😂
Because you enjoy inferior software and reliability issues coupled with less range
the iD4 ? its "CRAP " - MUNRO live.
You can pump Tesla as long as you want you will lose most of your money invested in Tesla Mark!
