    I saw an EV6 on a Kia lot just a couple days ago so I stopped to take a look. The salesman came out and I asked him if they had any markups. He said yes, but with the tax credit you will get your money back in the end and it's a wash. I don't think that's how it's supposed to work.

    I test drove both and then bought the EV6 last week. I liked the EV6 styling better, but it was how it drove that was the big difference. The two cars share a lot of components but they drive very differently. A word of warning for anyone thinking of buying either car with the matte gray paint: Do your homework and investigate the care requirements for the matte paint. It looks great, but for many people the effort required to maintain the paint may be a non-starter.

    • @DJL78
      @DJL78 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I went with a Black Ioniq 5 because it felt less skittish and more composed/comfortable. I totally agree with you on the “matte” paint finishes. I wish they offered the SAME paint options in America as Europe and South Korea. We are missing out on the best color options. .

    • @jm9371
      @jm9371 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. I went with the Matt paint anyway. The difference in the in the look is all in the mattcoat (not clearcoat). Higher maintenance and care is needed. However, there are certain aftermarket ceramic coats that help with the maintenance that I will have professionally done.

    • @ragweedmakesmesneeze
      @ragweedmakesmesneeze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jm9371 Lately I've fallen down a TH-cam matte paint "rabbit hole." Forgive me if you already know all this. But my take-away is that if you rock chips, scratches and swirls bother you, then the only way to truly protect against those things are using "Paint Protection Film." Which, done properly seems to run about $1500 to $3000+ depending on areas covered. Also, once matte paint is scratched, it's there "forever" because the traditional "buff it out" method will turn the matte into a glossy finish!

    I’m surprised you jumped over the mid-level RWD models/pricing. Those will most likely be the biggest sellers. I also think this is where Kia and Hyundai are the furthest apart on pricing. You can get a nicely equipped Hyundai for a few grand less than the comparable Kia. The Ioniq 5 Limited RWD seems to be the best buy. You also didn’t mention the poor visibility in the Kia. The narrow windows, lack of panoramic roof, and super thick rear pillars make it very claustrophobic, especially with the black interior. I always thought I’d prefer the Kia, but I think I’d go for the Hyundai.

      Not sure where you are. In the US, almost every Kia dealerships have EV 6 in stock. It is just hard to find the ones that is sold at MSRP. Some you can find the may be $1000 over MSRP if you are lucky. Otherwise 5K over is norm.

      I just got EV6 GT-Line at MSRP in NH. There are many of them in New England in general and the mark up is not too bad (yet). I have a feeling once the market realizes how great this car is it is going to explode. Similar to what happened with Tellurides. Dealers can't get enough of them. I am trading in mine in for $2K more than what I paid for it 1 year ago.

    A pre-2015 RWD 5.0L V8 Mustang with 315hp accelerated 0-60 in about the same 4.7-4.8 seconds as this 4-door AWD 320hp Ioniq 5 (family CUV, not sports car!).
    So when the reviewer says that this car will be fast enough for "most" buyers, then he's forgetting that just a short 5-6 years ago (I'm rounding down;)) a sports car (like the aforementioned previous gen V8 'Stang) was heralded as being really fast for 95% of buyers. So, how can 4.7s 0-60 not be plenty enough for 95% of buyers now!? Because it is!
    In the last couple of years, Tesla with its really fast EVs has gotten us desensitized to speed and what fast now means at a more "affordable" price (compared to Porsches, Lambos)! A 2014 V8 Mustang is no longer fast enough! (A "simple" and smallish 4-door sedan can do 0-60 in 3.3s these days. That used to be supercar territory before Tesla's Model 3 Performance came along!)
    Gotta love the advancement of technology! And no emissions! Best of both worlds 🌎. (We'll all miss a V8 engine's roar though!)

    I don't understand why they don't come up with a standard replacement battery that's compatible with all Electric Cars, considering that they all have extra trunk space! Like a tire that can be switched in case of emergency, you could slide in a battery that's full and replace it with the empty one! Additional 20ml being available at gas stations, where they could recharge the empty one! I think that this would release drivers from distance anxiety and would be good business for everyone involved!

      Been saying the same...this would be a major game changer.
      Just as the EU imposed standardisation on mobile phone charging, they could do the same. Basically it needs governments to get together.
      The problem maybe is that the Chinese are strides ahead in this respect and adopting their standard may not suit us politically.

    Just a note on charging. Hyundai and Kia don't state that maximum charge rate is 350KW. They state that maximum charge rate is achieved when connected to a 350KW charger. The max charge rate is actually about 240KW on the larger battery pack. Still the fairly flat charge curve has this vehicle charge very quickly.

    The choice is simple for me. Since I want the top trim I am going for the EV6 gtline. Better handling, better acceleration, better range, better sound system, heated rear seat option and physical buttons for climate control. All these for a nominal difference in price between the ioniq 5 limited and ev6 gtline in us. Kia is the winner when it comes to the top trim. Dont care about the pano roof. My current car has one and the shade is closed most of the time.

    I personally think the Ionic5's use of classic shapes and lines to create a very modern appearance will actually stand the test of time better. It's both retro and modern. Very Bauhaus if you will! For me, the combination of Kia's traditional front end, welded together with an oddly swooping and bulging rear makes for a less attractive vehicle overall.

      I dunno, I saw one of the blueish grey ones with grey trim the other day. It was pretty dirty (as cars tend to get) and it looked pretty bad. I think the grey body trim is so busy with lines that it grabbed dirt in a very unappealing way. Like an early 2000s pontiac grand am along the sides. Saw a black one that was nice though. Hides some of the awkward pieces better.

      @petegalindez9961 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@samdelon I do miss the sportiness of my Tesla Model 3. It was the AWD LR Model, so grip, acceleration and handling were superb. The Kia Niro EV, while it has plenty of pep and acceleration, it’s front wheel drive and the tires are skinny. So, if I floor it off the line in Sport Mode, I’m chirping tires, getting massive torque steer, and the skinny tires don’t give you any grip turning corners with such a heavy car. But, it’s basically my commuter and it’s ideal for that. The room is great. Fits my golf clubs, golf push cart, and accessories without any problems. Standard seat heaters, upgraded stereo are also a plus that uses Apple CarPlay. You can get the higher trim with cooled seats that work great (can’t get that on a Tesla). I don’t miss the Y in any way…felt like driving a skate board; the smallest pebbles felt like boulders when I went over them…and I’ve driven some stiff cars (BMW X5 sport probably being on the stiffer side). Lastly, while the Niro EV is rated for 239 miles of range, I’m consistently seeing closer to 300 and even over when conditions are ideal…like right now in the spring. I’m seeing upwards of 318!

    Tried both and I agree with everything in the video, for me, the EV6 wins. The interior of the IONIQ 5 seems unfinished and I am not comfortable with that connected flooring on the front seats row. While agree that the transmission control of the IONIQ 5 is better (and that the space of the knob could've been saved on the EV6), the overall feel and selection of features of the EV6 makes it far superior. I didn't feel like I was in a 60k car sitting in the IONIQ, somehow, it felt cheaper than my 2015 Subaru. The EV6 really gave me that 'futuristic' electric car feel that is honestly a must if I'm going to spend that kind of money on a car. Also, the drive assist of the IONIQ 5 is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, I would not use it, if the system can't handle a certain curve or road, the icon simply blinks and the drive assist deactivates, no sound feedback whatsoever so you might miss whether your drive assist is on or not.

    I do not fully appreciate the value of wireless charging in a car that does not offer wireless Apple Carplay or Android Auto. Using Carplay and Auto have become SOP for me, and without wireless options for them, it means I am plugging my phone in every time. As my wife says from the passenger seat, "that means I get to use the wireless charging pad," and she's right -- that is really the only value I see here.
    What am I missing in all of this??

    • @JeremyAkersInAustin
      @JeremyAkersInAustin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You nailed it. The driver plugs his phone in to charge and to use CarPlay / Android Auto and the passenger gets to use the wireless charging pad.
      I've driven cars with wireless charging and wireless CarPlay / Android Auto and the problem is that running your phones display over the wireless connection uses a LOT of battery power and the wireless charging struggles to keep up. Plus you have extra heat being generated by the CPU of the phone, the wireless display chips, plus wireless charging itself creates a lot of heat. So what I've found is that when you do wireless charging + wireless display your phone gets insanely hot. So hot I'd be worried about long term damage to the phone and/or it's battery.
      So personally even if I have wireless display available in a car, I still opt to use the cable.

    • @amperformance7998
      @amperformance7998 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apparently, the lack or wireless Carplay/Auto is not a hardware issue, but a licensing issue. Something to do with native navigation. That's why models without nav get wireless, but models with nav have to do without.
      Hopefully the issue can be solved and enabled via an update.

    • @michaelgoetz7506
      @michaelgoetz7506 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can, of course, position the steering wheel so it doesn't block the speed. I'm not sure why a driver would position the steering wheel such that it blocks information you want to see. Furthermore, in the top trim line of both cars the speedometer as well as much more information is present on the Heads Up Display, so it's right there in front of you superimposed on the view through the windshield. You don't even need to look down. I've driven the cars both with and without the HUD; seeing the speedometer isn't a problem either way.

    I feel sorry for electric car drivers and future owners. They will simply have to learn the hard way .. as I did. These things are a huge hassle, all those lost hours sitting in those charging stations, huge anxiety, plus a outrageous expense in the long run. Good luck trying to sell a used Electric car with wore out battery modules. You'll find out nobody wants to pay the ridiculous price of batteries ... Batteries are very ... very expensive to replace ( thousands of dollars) ... and make no mistake, you will be replacing them. These batteries are highly toxic to our environment, with a high potential for disaster to our surroundings. LITHIUM BATTERIES ARE NOT GREEN CLEAN ENERGY BY ANY MEANS! ...

      It's not much of a problem on the EV6. The aerodynamics are different and the rear window doesn't get that dirty. Also, honestly, having driven both (and owned the Kia for a short time), the view out the rear is so small on both cars, and what view there is is partly blocked by the rear seat headrests, that I don't see much in the rear view mirror anyway. Strangely, this hasn't been a problem. Despite this shortcoming, I find I have far more situational awareness in this car than in anything else I've driven in the 45 years I've been driving.

      The Ioniq 5 comes in two gray colors. Cyber gray and a different matte gray. The matte gray looks great (on either car), but it's very hard to care for. I recommend not buying it unless you're okay with a high maintenance paint. That was the one color that was off the table when I was shopping for an EV6.

    • @DJL78
      @DJL78 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I initially reserved a Cyber Gray one. I ended up going with black as there is very little contrast between the silvery colored trim and the body in Cyber. The matte is nice to look at but harder to maintain during winters in the north east. So, for me black looked best. What I can’t get over is just how large the Ioniq5 is in person. Photos/videos do NOT convey the scale and size of this thing.
