Last April Will Chris and Myself ventured to San Diego for our first ever three day trip in search of Bluefin tuna. Granted the trip was a great success and we all limited out on bluefins, we were told we needed to come back later in the season if we wanted to experience the big boys. So here we are a year and one month later in the season with our cross hairs set on triple digits. This time we are headed out on the Pacific Queen with captain Gavin & Billie. From what we have been told this is the boat for whacking and stacking big bluefins.
Cool thing, Graham who is a master rod builder for United Composites dropped us off a few of his very own Pandemic rods to try out. He said you can put as much heat on these rods as you want and Will planned on it.
Dropping slow pitch jigs in the pacific ocean was an incredible experience for us all. This video is just an absolute success story for offshore slow pitch jigging and we hope that you enjoy it.

I just got my JS Railer in the mail today, and looking at it im thinking, "no fn way thisis gonna hold a 150lb tuna". but I then recalled you anouncing the new rod on thatlast video you did on tuna... and here I am looking at Criss Killing it with literally the exact set up Im using.... Valiant 800 w/ 100lb Deapth Hunter.... CANNOT WAIT to get out there now.... I only have to drive an hour though to get to SD.... Whooooooooot! I'm hoping to go on 1 of these trips this summer. But I need to buy a blue fin set up. What should I buy, (Rod,, reel, and line? What ever u recommend I will buy . Budget friendly maybe under 1000 or under 800
you guys picked a great time to go. you caught the bigger fish bite an left before the bite slowed. it is now a daytime sinker rig bite. 1) it is interesting that you designed a 7'10" inch rod when all the jigging folks are using rods six foot or less. 2) your group loves accurate when the folks are using talica 20iis or saltiga 55s. ( do you have any problems leaving the accurate outside all night? accurate tolerances are known to be not tolerant of the elements)
1) That 7’10” length is perfect for SoCal open party boats…helps keep your fish away from the hull of the boat during the last up & down death circle fight. Observe how some of those using shorter jigging rod used their body to bend outward like rod extensions to keep the tuna away under the boat….that said I love my Temple Reef INNOVATE spj rod on Party boats. Shorter rod is more suitable for Private Boat or Private Charter focus on Vertical Jigging Only. On SoCal party boats? They are “That Guys”!
2) Not true. We’ve been using our ACCURATE Valiants & ATD’s on Multi-Days exposed to elements 24/36/48…hours & up on boat racks with No Single issues. In fact we’re enjoying our Valiants on SPJ fishing Long Before the new Saltiga LD came into the market. Talica are suited for a Bait reel like Makaira & VISX. Just clean after every trip & A Drop of Oil on the 2-Speep Mechanism works for us for years. We love the Valiants for Jigging due to it’s almost Half Weight Difference (2-speed reels) compared to the heavy weight Talica & Saltiga. Additionally Accutate Reela are MADE in USA 🇺🇸
@@johnsmith-xd9ej thank you. captain concepts(Matt FV san diego an GavinFV pacific queen) are talica lovers . i have asked on their chat an they are not to keen on accurate. to me tall, narrow, powerful, an light (jigging reel) screams accurate to me
forgot the party boat folks like to leave their gear on the boat . so it does not get much maintenance per trip
What size reels did yall take? I was looking at pairing the railer rod with a penn fathom 2 40N when the occasion come up.

Are you guys going to carry the brain spikes? I know you can do it with a short stiff bait knife, but the brain spikes look a little safer to use.

Very nice!! Awesome trip!! Crazy question, Bob’s reel is left handed, I was wondering the reason. Is he left handed? I’m left handed but looking to get a heavy setup but it seems awkward reeling a heavy fish right handed.
That has been a topic for many years around the jj shop. Bob is right-handed but prefers to work the rod with his right and reel with the left. I am the opposite and agree with you. Bob is not alone. I have met many anglers that prefer to reel with the left and jig with their right. My theory is that you are comfortable with how ever you learn. And just like in baseball, you can teach yourself to swing both ways.

What are your thoughts on smaller AVET reels with the Shimano Talavera Slow J rods for entry level and economically friendly SPJ setups?
My first setup was an Avet SX Raptor 2-speed and the Talavera, and it’s still working great. Caught Grouper to 25 lbs. and numerous 60 to 80 lb. Amberjack with zero issues. Avet also made in the USA.

way to go guys. I got my SJ Railer ready with some Johnny's jigs for my upcoming trip. what size braid are u using on the accurate 800N which knot to leader do u recommend? I got some wind on leaders ready in case I don't feel good about my FG knot to leader. also I'm planning on tying strait to solid ring to split ring to jig.thanks in advance

What was your preferred reel on this trip?
Some San Diego captains are on the rail about slow pitching because the rods aren't strong to control the fish; you just get dragged around the boat and you need to climb to get around the anchor everytime. Is it just the lack of technique? I've seen this as well, it's effective for catching fish but you get dragged around no matter that the size of fish are.
Can the Valiant 800N and SJ Railer handle 100lb Braid and be set up for SPJ 100+ LB Bluefin for night bites?
