Tuna are some of the hardest fighting fish you can catch, so it's a bucket list trip to get on a boat and chase them. Come along as we join a group of Utah anglers who call themselves "The Royal Hookup." Every year they charter a boat called the Pacific Queen out of Fisherman's Landing in San Diego to catch their limits of bluefin tuna. In this episode, we show you how you can do this fishing excursion yourself, what gear and tackle to use, how to catch tuna, and of course watch a bunch of tuna being brought on board. It's a trip of a lifetime!

Gavin and the Pacific Queen are one of the top tuna boats, for sure, they earn that reputation!

Yes he will,,,, I caught my first Tuna on the Pacific Queen back in the early 80’s on my first 2 day trip with my dad who had taken me fishing since I was 5 and yes I still remember the entire trip. The crew treated me like I was part of there family and taught me the fundamentals of Sportfishing that I’ve used to this day, I have fished on this boat dozens of times and have NEVER been disappointed. In my eyes the Pacific Queen is magical and possesses some kind of aura that attracts a variety of targeted species. Ed McEwen was one of the greatest west coast Sportfishing captains to ever run the PC and I think all the captains since then are some if the best in the fleet to date.

I've done this 2 times, both day trips. My next trip will be an over night run. It's so fun, it's unbelievable. I wish Utah was closer to the ocean because I would be doing this once a month

Yeah, the Queen is a very difficult boat to get on. The Aztec (Seaforth), Legend (H&M), New Lo Ann (Point Loma), and Islander (Fishermans) probably round out the top 5 if you do not include the summer time LR boats. Lots of good options at all the landings. The tough thing is that with 1st timers you do not know how they will fare sleeping on the boat for multiple days. 2, 2.5, 3, and 3.5 days are better trips for Bluefin, because they can bite full speed one day and not bite at all the next. very fickle. giving yourself more days allows for a bad day and still have a chance at fish. However, sleeping on a boat for a 1st timer could be a nightmare.
There were a quite a few first timers. There were also a few of us who live for this. We have been chartering the Queen for a few years now. My uncle and I charter the Queen 3 times a year. Great crew
Your gally and fish cutting bill doesn't come outta the 100$ u spoke of.....the deck survives on tips......a 100 dollar tip is short for what these guys do........I been doin this 34yrs.....just a heads up

Yeah. It can be a bit more for a 1.5 day. $Fuel Surcharge, $100 Meals, $90 Tip (20%), $100 rod Rental, around 50c a pound for filleting, and those knife jigs can be $60+ a piece rigged with tuna strength hooks and hardware. A $1,000 plus travel is fair.
We make sure the crew gets taken care of. $200 - $250 is typical to expect on a day and half. But us charter masters make sure the crew is taken care of at the end of trip. Sometimes the first timers don’t know what to expect, but we teach them quickly.
@@jager3418 Fish filleting is around $1.85 per/lb. Sorry for the bad news. You probably already know it by now.
