Around 12:50 when your talking about the stamina to catch the fish. It’s called a rail rod for a reason. That rod should be firmly placed on that boat rail, so you can focus on keeping tension on the tip. That’s what gets the head of the fish turned or else they will spool ya. I rarely ever put that rod up on my hip. The rods just aren’t designed to work that way. Most of the rods have lots of back bone and shut off quick so you will feel every pound of that fish in your back. But if you slap it on the rail your can keep it under your armpit and use that leverage to pump the fish in, or just the normal motion of the boat assuming it’s not glass will give your the leverage to pump.
I've seen 200 lbs bft rip drag on a penn 50 wide for 3 minutes straight. 50+lbs drag just getting smoked. Buckle up with a slow pitch narrow if you get one of those and pray you don't get spooled! 🤣🤣 Fine for rockfish, schooly bft and yellowtail, but not the cows. These fish are exothermic meaning the only way for them to cool off is water over their gills so they haul ass to cool off. If you fight a bft to fatigue, their blood cooks the meat and makes it gross. They hemorrhage out and blood all in the meat. Best to overgear and winch them in if they're in a spicy mood.
Chumming sardines is an effective tool to get the fish interested. Once interested, there should be a bite or two to help bring the school up to or around the boat. Keeping the chum going keeps the fish around (by providing an alternative to "wild" bait). Doesn't work every time, but often enough to do it consistently. It's the technique the SoCal fleet has used for years and works better on yellowfin tuna and albacore (for those who can remember when they were around in SoCal), and yellowtail.
Dude, thanks for that input! That makes sense with the yellowfin and it makes sense to practice chumming live sardines on the bluefin. Those crews are quick to react to the capts directions and execute well
Using light gear for these fish may be fun for you and all but like the captain said , he doesn't have all night to wait for someone to wrestle a fish for time you may not have. It looks like you did all right and had fun and that is what really counts.
Great Trip! I trying some of your jigs this year. The bottom fishing is much better up north, bigger rockfish, big Lingcods, from the Channel Islands, up north to Morro Bay, Farallon Islands.
Thank you for representing the west coast even though you guys are east coast!... Was see the pictures the landings were posting and knew you were gonna post a video! cheers 🥂
I knew Captain Alliard when he was a young deckhand out of Dana wharf. He saved my bass rod and reel! My hands were so numb from catching countless bass toward the end of the day. The rod flew out of my hands as I casted, the braid just caught deep in the spool. Alliard flew off the bait tank with a gaff like the Flash. He gaffed my rod several feet below the surface! It was an experience that I will never forget. He will always have my respect and gratitude. Alliard makes magical Sh*t happen! Proof is in this video! Amazing catches guys!
Wow!! What an experience. Alliard is a great guy and a great captain. This was a trip of a lifetime time. Watching the Captain get down and bloody was honestly refreshing. This man does not steer away from the big fish 🐟 when we would lose the bigger tuna schools we’d find the smaller ones and then boom right back in the big boys. The night bite was unreal to say the least. Ya know.. now that you mention it I heard a story about a rod being gaffed. Happy to put a face to the story. Thanks for watching and Jig On!!
@@JohnnyJigsTV Wow! That’s amazing to hear he still remembered that after all these years! My guess is that happened close to 20 years ago.. Congrats to all of you! The quality and size of all the Bluefin makes for a memory of a lifetime! BTW love your channel, such great content, it’s a perfect learning tool,🤙
Awesome video of your trip guys! It was great to see my two “Go To” guys Chris Doyle and William Ng in action. Can’t wait to get on a trip with all of you guys one day.
We are an underwater light manufacture from Japan, we really love the content you make around fishing. We would gladly send you a pair of our high quality lights for your boats to experience the quality of it.
chumming sardines helps the tuna come to the boat as well as get them to change their appetite from what they were originally eating switching to your chum. this helps private boats get bit on these plunker bites when fish aren’t foaming yet
Hiya yall that was an amazing trip yall had on the Polaris Supreme, with new owner , has been fantastic fishing yall , congratulations on trip yall 😅😅😅😅😅😅
The chunking is to see if the school was willing to play. If you chunk and they keep moving you have almost no chance, but if they slow down to grab the bait then you have a chance to drop your jigs or bait down to get them.
Twister month ago I went red snaper fishing down in Panama city bleach fl for a two day charter on the lady Kelly. It was a blast. I'm planning one for next year. With my fishing buddies group.
Great Video Guys, my trip is booked for SEPT 2024 on the Ranger 85. Great tips for catching Blue Fin. Where do I sign up for next years Annual Johnny Jigs Blue Fin Fishing Trip??? LOL
"Preferably both hooks should be on the bottom." Of course, the next fish shown is only hooked by the top hook with the bottom one hanging free. Not saying the bottom hook couldn't have done the job if the top wasn't there but still...
Preference is top and bottom but, what a gut punch doing back to back 100lb+ fish foul hooked - I’ll probably still go after the next once top and bottom 😂
Love the video!!! I’ll be in San Diego August to see my family and at the same time I’m going for tuna’s fishing trip. What would be the best Jiggin rod for a 2days trip? Did you have your new jigging rail rod out yet? Thanks
We are use to it. It's hard for people to deviate from what they know works, and that is understandable. However, we do this for sport, and to winch a fish in on a heavy rod may be fun for some, we prefer the battle of landing big fish on light gear. With this being said, you still have to do it in a timely manner on a head boat. Keep bringing your SPJ gear and do you!
Man I need to get more pics of my rockfishing up here in northern Cali, I primarily use Johnny Jigs and can send them to yall. My 400 gram watermelon torpedo absolutely destroyed the canary rockfish during our deep water season
FLY-LINING!!! I could not remember what it was called it on the West Coast. Thanks, Jim. For us on the Atlantic, we call it flat-lining, and now that I think about it, neither of those names make perfect since 😀 lol...
i all. Please explain why the best fishing occurs at night? What are the advantages of night fishing? flashlights attract forage fish, forage fish attract tuna?
My mom just said "Johnny should find a nice lady named Jinny. So then it could be Johnny's Jigs and Jinny's Jugs" This is her first time trying whipped cream vodka. She had 2 sips.
I believe you would need a special license to sell the fish. We fly back with a majority of the fish, and the rest we pay to have processed and donate it. I believe it gets flash frozen and given to homeless shelters and people in need.
thats awesome, i didn’t know if the charter boat was allowed to sell your catch to cover some of the expense. Yeah you would need your commercial license to sell it. Very cool for you guys to donate it though. I have done the same with deer meat in tennessee.
In CA it's illegal to sell sport caught fish. Need a commercial license. Most boat owners/crews do not get involved with the distribution of the catch once it has been divvied up on the pier and each angler has taken possession of his catch. CA Fish and Game is pretty attentive to all this to ensure as few bad actors as possible.

When the fish are biting it can keep a school on you for hours
Harder to get chum down when the fish are 250-400+ft down
I have never seen an underwater video of what those jigs look like in the water
Polaris Supreme an good old legend Tommy Rothery made that boat for what it is today... You guys are truly lucky to fish that boat. 😊

i think you guys need a jigging master reel and equip with phenix Megalodon. that can take care of fish up to 190lb in 20min or less
Chiming Sardines works to bring s9me of the school up to shallower depth and can trigger the Tuna to bite and stay with the boat.
SD 💯 .. Team No Sleep BF fishing
Hell yeah! Let’s go!
Did younuse bite leaders on your jigs? If so what size line for bite leaders?
What gear would you recommend for that grade tuna?
What Rod combo did you catch your tuna on ?
You experienced the Pacific Ocean San Diego Bluefin fishing. It's not meant for the weak hearted
Send me out some of your jigs let me give them a try I'm Going Out on the same boat in about 2 weeks
They should have put the kite out when it’s that hard to get a daytime bite.
What is the reel and rod you were using?
What is the rod that looks like it has red diamond wrap on the foregrip?
Whats a good size rod for that technique?
Great trip. I picked up a few of your jigs last year looking forward to sending them in July. Awesome boat and awesome capt and crew. Simply one of the best!!! }
What size line and leader did you all use to catch the bluefin tuna?
Probably 100-130 lb braid to 200lb leader... heavy setups because it doesn't matter at night
does using a spj setup really take 2 hours on big fish like that? hoping that was an exaggeration
