That's crazy who would put 2 batteries specially underneath the seat.
I wonder why they are shutting down 😮
How is this start/stop actually a "green" tech? Starters and extra batteries. How long will a jeep engine endure with this "awesome feature"?
Hyundi should be charged an extra carbon tax penalty, because of the low mileage disposal engines they produce.
How much more of a carbon foot print and trash in the environment is being created by such novel junk?
I wonder how many corporate lobbyists it took to make this happen.
2012, the Obama Administration finalized the standards of automotive companies to encourage a corporate fuel economy average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.
Eco Friendly cars can have two batteries too.
You make learning about vehicles ridiculously entertaining so it's very easy to retain the information.

Agreed. I’m a dude. I do dude things. I like chicks…but I’ve never really cared about vehicles…I mean - I have liked vehicles…I liked some more than others…but until this guy Scotty - it hasn’t made sense. Now it does.

Totally agree. The gas savings vs parts wear is like risking dollars to save pennies. The feature is also SUPER ANNOYING; dangerous even, due to the delayed restart. I constantly worry about stepping on gas too quick during the restart. Luckily my current cars Acura MDX Advance & RSX Type S don’t have it and my next car won’t have it either.
Stepping on the gas "faster" changes nothing. The failure rate on the parts involved in start/stop are very high. I don't see any reason to turn it off, 3% is huge over 6 years.
Rsx type S gang 💪
They could get 2 or 3% by just making the vehicle lighter mate. One wonders how much efficiency is lost by hauling around the ever increasing number of complex gadgets? For example electrically heated seats can weigh upwards of 80KG for a driver/front passenger seat for what is an utterly pointless function as your arse will warm it up after a minute while the cabin heater kicks in. A lighter car means better road holding, lower fuel consumption and better performance. I own a 2004 lightweight French supermini hot hatch, curb weight of 1035KG and it does 0-62 in 6.7, 140MPH, and cruising at 75MPH (it's peak mpg point) gets 45MPG on a flat motorway with 35MPH on the urban cycle if you don't drive like a boy racer. I wonder what it would do if I lightened it and replaced the posh leather seats and climate control system? That'd knock around 10% of the weight off, and of course with no A/C belt holding the motor back it'd rev a little more freely.
@@michealcthompsonjrYessir it does make a difference. If I forget and leave mine on and the engine shuts down at a light, then when I take off, if I forget and try to take off too fast, there’s a nasty jolt in the drive train as the engine tries to catch up with what’s going on, and I know it can’t be good for things. And that right there is why I try to always remember to keep mine turned off. Besides that it’s really annoying. The potential repair costs are not worth the potential savings.
@@darthwiizius Sorry, but I'm keeping my heated seats. Live in a cold, snowy climate and you learn to really appreciate them, even once the cabin warms up. Feels great on your back too. I'll gladly sacrifice those 80 kilos.
I absolutely hate these start/stop stupid systems. It was a poor idea that wears components out faster.
Auto start stop /. Echoboost/ gdi /. Cylinder deactivation. Amazing tech. Planed absolescence
Another stupid and dangerous idea is Electronic Accelerators and Limp mode
Government overreach. They do this because of EPA regulations so they can meet MPG requirements. And since it wears out faster - it's win/win for car manufacturers. I think there are figures out there saying it saves a negligible amount of gas over the life of the vehicle.
And it's actually worse for the environment. If the car wears out faster and you need to replace parts or change the car then the environmental impact is greater!
I'm sure I've just watched and listened to scotty say the exact same 😂
I am no mechanic, but as soon as I saw this feature I knew this was a bad idea. Thanks for confirming it Scotty.

@@MrAlvarez23my Toro Lawn tractor has the battery under the seat, which I am very uncomfortable with!
THANK YOU!! Finally a voice of reason. I rented a car once with this feature and couldn’t figure out why it kept “stalling” LOL what a ridiculous feature. My first thought was “that starter ain’t going to last!”
You can disable start and stop feature by taking out the fuse it’s located on the battery connector wire under the seat. It’s very simple to do. Did it on my Jeep the best thing I ever did!
most times i turned it off anyways, because it's super annoying and i feel like i lose some control whenever it's on, though i sometimes forgot. but now that i know it wears off the engine too, i will DEFINITELY never forget to turn it off. thanks for the advice!
Had a 2017 Dodge Durango with this feature. Had to replace the starter which cost over $1k because the engine mount had to be removed to get the job done. The mechanic checked how many starts the old starter had on it. It had logged 36,000 starts! We were floored! Even if I had started my car 10 times a day for a year it would have only totaled 3650 starts in a single year, but because it stops the engine at every stoplight, stop sign, and even when you pull in to park, it had racked up that many starts at the 87K mile mark.
I am surprised they logged how many times the starter was used.
Made it a tradition to turn off the auto start/stop in my mom's 2023 Terrain every time since the first day she bought it a couple months ago. Stumbled upon this video by accident. Glad to see you agree, Scotty!
She hot?
I got rid of a 22 traverse that I had to take in for start stop issues about 5k miles after having it. After that I realized it's only down hill. Hope your mom's car lasts! Please baby it!!
100% agree! I just bought a new 2023 Honda Accord and it has one of these STUPID systems. I am already in the habit of turning that RIDICULOUS system off!
Amen, Scotty! I'm a reliability engineer and the auto cutoff drives me nuts for the same reason. You can't save that much on gas vs. replacing a starter - not to mention the extra stress on the engine that has to start with dry bearings since the engine stopped. I have a Kia Telluride and I installed a third market device that remembers your last setting. That way I don't have to push the button every time I start the car.
cant you splice it together and stuff it back in the button hole?
I absolutely HATE it. Will cause premature failure of other components like starter and battery. Dumb thing. Hope my next car doesn't have this as I would not buy it. But we may NOT have a choice as the government is ALWAYS telling us what is good for us
just jam the button with something that's what i have done been like it for 9 years now never had to press the button. @@JanetVaughn-cm3et
Thank's Scotty.
In addition to wearing the engine, battery, and starter out faster, the few times I tried that feature on my 2019 Highlander, I noticed a lag in acceleration.
Maybe not noticeable for the average driver, but I've driven Emergency vehicles for over thirty years. If you need to accelerate from a stop to get out of a situation where you may be impacted in a collision, you don't want any hesitation.
Yes, hundred times yes - the lag in accel after a full stop is just terrible. I got Dacia Duster 2023 1.3l engine with start-stop and I just can't start driving after a full stop with proper acceleration - it feels like I never gave it any gas...2 seconds go by and I am getting fking yeeted forward with that delayed acceleration. I enjoy the part of using remote and starting the car with button, but other than that - it's terrible.
@@ward7576I personally have made it a point to try to avoid those smaller engines. I had a 1.6L 2013 Ford Fusion, and don't get me wrong I did love that car. Cool looking, and a solid car all around. Except at 150k miles we were doing something and noticed that the serpentine belt we just replaced 6 months ago was now shredded. The headers were leaking. The turbochargers they put on these smaller engines are killing them. Maybe they can get away without a turbo on some, but most they put a turbo on, and I just don't know if I could trust one, even without a turbo. I hope you get a long life out of that car, but man if a vehicle is blowing oil like that under 200k miles, it's a failure in my opinion. Meanwhile my 5.6L v8 on my truck is going on 325k miles with no such oil leak. As far as I'm concerned, that's HALF the lifespan.
The lag in acceleration comes from torque converter no longer spinning since the engine shutdown.
If quick acceleration after start in automatic car is what you want, a dual clutch transmission is what you want.
100 percent agree. I’m a paramedic and this would NEVER work for emergency vehicles
Yes! I thought I was imagining that lag!
I am glad this video surfaced up. So many people here saying that there's delayed acceleration after "full stop" and I thought it was a defect on my car for the longest time.
I'm honestly surprised they don't have stop-start technology that you can't override already.
They do. But you gotta tear the whole dash apart to install a wiring harness that installs to an existing coupling that overrides the auto stop start button. When it’s installed you start the car the button defaults to off instead of on. You press the button the auto stop engages. 100 fricken bucks.
They do sell override devices so it disables the start/stop
I had 2019 Accord 6 speed so it didn't have it but the automatics did you only had remove cover by gear shifter to install, but Honda are usually easy with aftermarket mods. I now have a 2022 RDX that has it but it does have auto off button.
I imagine a tune could do it, I also imagine if you car has auto start stop then it still has a warranty so
@@stinkothestooleater4490The Auto Stop Start eliminator can be easily unplugged in case of any warranty claims.
Thanks again for being so honest, Scotty. We all appreciate it.

Thank You!! You settled an argument I had with an acquaintance about this feature. I live in Phoenix and drive on the "surface streets" constantly. If someone were to commute from North Phoenix into downtown along, say, 7th Ave. to work during morning rush hour, one could expect to make at least 9 or 10 stops along the way. And in summer when you have your A/C going, daytime running lights on, other interior electronics running, your phone charging, every time you stop for a light, your main battery is draining itself running those systems because your engine has stopped. So, it stood to reason that your main battery will wear out A LOT faster than it would if your idling engine was powering those systems via your alternator while you idle. AND i just knew, without any written evidence, that if you restarted your engine about 10 times more often than normal, you'd burn through your starter MUCH sooner. Physics is truth.
Wholeheartedly agree. I’ve been saying these exact same things for years on start/stop.
I agree with whomever the Scotty Kilmer fan was that said we should harness Scotty’s arms to generate enough power to light up a small city! 😂 Try watching a Scotty video with the sound off and just enjoy his gesticulating! It’s fun! Love ya, Scotty!
Your advice come 45000 miles too late for me, I just changed the stater of my ford transit. I will follow your advice on turning off the "A" start.
Thank you, Sir.
Yup just one more step in the starting procedure, turn on and press the A@ start stop disable then seatbelt LoL
Scotty I completely agree. That feature has been non existent in my 19’ ford fusion, I always have it off. I always felt like my starter and spark plugs will wear out faster and engine in general. Thank you for shining the truth into the community about this feature.
They were designed around not doing that lol

My father-in-law's F-150 has auto start stop. I think his current truck is a 2020 like my Ranger. The first time i ever saw the start stop was on his truck. We were going somewhere and i saw him press the button with the A & circular arrow. He explained it shuts off the auto start stop feature. That was a big help because when i got my Ranger, I knew how to deactivate the start stop before the salesman could explain the feature.
Personally, i can't stand the feature and i am glad i can shut it off. As soon as i start my truck up, its the first thing i do. It is the dumbest feature put into vehicles.
It's really refreshing that you tell it as it is, rather than fall into line with those who don't know better or even care. Because of planned obsolescence and other idiotic features and electronics that cause complex and frequent repairs, I will never buy a new car.
👍🏼👍🏼 I hate this feature, specially on a STOP sign. There is a u-tuber that did some test on gasoline consumption and you only saves gas if you stop for more than a 10 seconds. I only use it on intersections that I know gonna take longer and early in the morning I turn off the lights and A/C to avoid faster drain of the battery. Good job Scotty in keeping the community informed and sharing your expertise knowledge to the whole world.
I had a Compass 2018 with that system. In less than 18 months the dealer replaced both battery’s three times. Before 16,000 miles I traded it for a Ford Ranger. No complaints so far.
Rented one had no Auto off button glad it was a rental worst car ever only 28000 miles rode like it had 100000 miles.

I have a fun'ny too.
Usually when I'm tired of scissoring and just want to wrap things up.
Yes I learned that trick real quick. Hearing that starter constantly firing up the engine 25 times a day when it should be 5 times. We always disable that button. In fact I purchased a component to tie into the system under the dash that prevents it from coming on at all. Don't even have to remember to push the button. they make them for most vehicles. Search for start stop bypass
yup. i see it as a safety issue. if one is stopped and then suddenly must get out of the way there is at least a delay, and the slight but possibly fatal problem of a non-start.
My first car with this. So grateful for Scotty, I figured it was a problem.
The first car I had with the start/stop system was a 2019 Buick Enclave, but it had no button to disable the system. I used to shift into manual and go to 9th gear to prevent the system from shutting the car off. My daughter's 2019 Equinox had a similar issue, but to solve her problem, I bought a Range Disabler, plugged it into the OBD port, and the problem was solved.
Thank you Scotty! I drive a Dodge minivan with this at work, I can see putting 100 starts on the equipment over the course of a work day - and that's without the intentional stops I make for food, potty breaks, and checking for clients.
The default ought to be to have stupid start stop OFF! I’ve had too many close calls pulling out into traffic from the hesitation in forgetting to push that stupid button to turn the thing off! Note: You can get a dongle to plug into the computer port to make the default OFF! Haven’t got one yet but plan to. Thanks! Good video.
yeah they should give the option to turn it on instead of off
In aviation we always avoid unnecessary engine starts. Specifically, if you need to move your airplane on the ground a short distance, it is best to move the plane by hand or with a tug. Starts cause excessive wear due to lack of lubrication plus battery drain. Especially when cold.
If there’s 1 thing I hate the most is having to push that dang button every single time I start my car😂. But you are correct I used to use that crap, killed my battery in less than a year to gain 0.02 mpg difference
I think some manufacturers implement this better than others. I used Auto Start/Stop for 7 years before changing the battery on my last car. I can almost not even tell it's happening on my car, either. But drove a Jeep once with it and it had a terrible delay when starting back up. Needs to be instant or it's extremely annoying.
And my gas mileage increases by 6-8% when using it
@@xocomaox currently have a Jeep and hate it all the way around, just can’t afford to can it 😂
I'm glad you said something. I was taught since the 1980's that 99% of engine wear comes from starting car. I was taught that 1970's auto shop at school. So basically the auto companies on purpose did this so your cars wont last.
I've experienced this start-stop system in a VW Transporter.
Whenever you stand still too long after engine shuts off through the start-stop system, you have to turn the car on manually.
Great when this happens at a traffic light, or any move that can get the vehicle to a standstill.
I hate this system, and it actually caused some dangerous situations.
I purchased an item online called a start stop eliminator. It took about ten minutes to install it works buy reversing the process, you have to push the button if you want to activate the start stop. If not it’s off by default. Works great. Costs less than 100 dollars
Me too. Love it. Never have to think about that stupid button.
Pacifica owner here. It has the AutoStartStop feature. Disconnect the aux battery and it will disable the start stop and save you in batteries. We used to have to replace the batteries every year, but since disabling we are going 3 years strong.
Sure glad our Tesla doesn't do that!
This is the first thing I do when go into a car, glad someone else any with me
What are you trying to say?
I find it amazing that they actually put a button in there where you could actually turn it off at least temporarily, that is what surprised me the most
Your spot on Mr K.
But this is what happens when people who have no idea how stuff works make decisions.
You don't call the plumber if the roof is leaking just because it's water coming in.
We've made life more complicated than it has to be. My daughter has one of those start stop buttons but luckily when you turn it off, it stays off. I knew that was a bad idea, to start stop, seems common sense.
Thank-you, Scotty! I suspected this from 1st time I heard a stop-start engine. You've more than vindicated my suspicions. Great work!
Here is when auto stop-start IS useful:
- Stopping at railway crossings
- Stopping at drawbridges
- Long traffic lights (or long lines at traffic lights)
- Basically any stop that will make you wait longer than 10 seconds (for example, waiting for passengers at kiss&ride)
Here is when auto stop-start SHOULD BE TURNED OFF:
- Stop-and-go highway traffic (instead, creep in 1st-2nd gear with enough distance, this prevents unnecesary wear on clutches and you keep moving at idle instead of constantly restarting the car, and others can still change lanes if need be)
- Uphill starts (unsafe when stopping as the engine produces no thrust when shut off)
- After a spirited drive if your car has a turbocharger (it needs oil circulating to cool and shutting down the engine stops oil circulation)
- Cold weather until the engine has warmed up to operating temperature (car will typically automatically keep that system turned off until it's ready for use)
It's not "planned obsolescence", it's "read the damn owner's manual", that button is easily reachable for a very good reason! It saves good fuel if you use it correctly and think ahead.
Don't drive your cars mindlessly, it is a little spaceship, and you have to know how to manage it.
Thx Scotty! I saw this button on my 20 Edge when I bought it and realized it was going to wear out 1 or 2 parts before ya posted this vid. Every time I hop in that button gets pressed! Thought the button made no sense as well.
I was already doing this - glad my intuition was correct. Thanks Scotty!
Gracias 🙏 señor Scotty for fixing our stupidity 😂😂😂😂you da man!!! We miss you here in Texas 🥵
Excellent advice as always Scottie! Best wishes from London, England!
I purchased a start stop bypass kit that plugs into ODB port. I am old, and remembering to push the button usually happened at the first stop sign. I have a 2020 Equinox that doesn't have the button and have to put the car in manual shift and then shift it to the top gear... it works perfectly to bypass the start stop. I saw no change in gas mileage.
They install start/stop to save gas but give you remote start so you can warm up/cool your car for 15 minutes 🤣 Remember that movie Idiocracy? If not, watch it. We are living it.

I didn't know this stuff, but it always made sense to me to turn the start/stop function off after starting the car. On the subject of batteries, it was necessary to take my car apart to get to the battery behind the front wheel on my Chrysler Sebring... a big job! Then the special battery was £600 UK. That was a few years ago, so would be much more expensive to replace now. Being older and (hopefully) wiser, I now have a Honda Civic.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 does not have the ridiculous start/stop system. It's one of the many things I like about the car.
Penny on the battery was classic. Example number one why this shouldn't be under a seat. what happens when you spill a drink. last I check electricity and liquid like water does not get along.
The most annoying part about stop start is when it stops the engine when it is still cold or when you briefly stop at a junction and bring the clutch up. I now have to press the engine start button then the A button every time I get in.
My 19 Cruze LS has a switch on the middle console to disable the auto stop. I love it.

All of my teachers and a couple family friends that are auto engineers have told me it dont do anything but cause undue wear and tear and actually uses more gas because it pumps more fuel and air in when starting.
The engineers have said it's just a big racket
It’s the first thing I do! I just got my new VW suv a few months ago and couldn’t figure out why it would do this! Finally got in the manual and figured out how to shut it off after a family member said that can’t be good for my starter! They put the button to activate/deactivate on the passenger side of the shifter up far enough you can’t see it from the driver’s seat. I just feel for it when I start up. Then the instrument cluster annoyingly pesters me regularly to please activate this start/stop!
I tell this to everyone I can. Thank you Scotty!
ALSO, it shows they CAN build parts better if they want to!!! Especially bearings : )
Can you imagine if Scottie designed a car?... & you KNOW he kept that penny. 😂
Scotty would copy Fred Flintstone's ride -- to avoid any appearance of technological advancements.
I've never found a NEED for my rig to self-start, so I'm safe from Scotty's "bogeyman".
When I bought my last 2 vehicles. I asked the salespeople if it had start/stop. They said no, so I bought them. Start/stop is a stupid/dumb feature. Unfortunately, more and more cars are getting them.
Hi everyone. easy fix. I bought IdleStopper v2. (89 USD) in Sept 2023 and installed it in my wife's 2022 Honda Civic Touring. Works fantastic and never have to remind my wife "Did you press/push the Idle-Stop button so it is turned off?". It is now automatically Off and does not void any part of your Honda / Acura warranty. A simple device to install as may take 20 to 40 minutes to install depending on what model Honda/Acura vehicle you have. All it does is turn off Idle-Stop which you could do yourself. It does not affect the vehicle's operational ability or the ECM "Electronic Control Module" aka computer system in any way.
This way when at a long traffic light or backed up for a while on the road from traffic congestion your vehicle will not stop idling and keep running. Imagine having the A/C on or the Heat going and the engine stops or maybe the engine fails to restart. The reason for Idle-Stop is government regulation on Emissions or to have less pollution. Idle-stop is annoying and aggravating as most people do not want it.
The biggest issue with my ‘23 Civic is the idle stop feature. My car has a manual transmission, which means that if I forget to turn it off, I’ll panic for a second thinking I’ve stalled the engine when I come to a stop. It also sometimes turns on with the clutch partially engaged which makes a rough start, and on top of all other problems will wear the clutch.
Purchase an idle stopper that's what I used for mine
That's an awful feature. My 2023 manual tacoma does not have that feature. Thank God!
The one thing worse than 'start stop' is 'start stop' on a manual transmission
I bought a brand new 2001 Mazda CX-5 Touring Preferred SV Package and I am so glad that it does not have this automatic stop/start system 😊👍🏻👏🏼👏🏼👌🏼💯💯
To bypass the start/stop on our 2019 Equinox we have to put the gearshift to low, then tap the + button on the gearshift til it shows L9(meaning nine gears).
You have to leave the gearshift in that position while driving.
You have to do it every time you drive the car or it defaults to start/stop.
😳... you're kidding...i hope!
I could be wrong but I thought that disabled AFM.
@@rustysteel8714 nope he's serious, we also have a 2018 equinox and have to do the same thing so it doesn't auto start/stop. it's also had 2 motor's, two turbo's and one transmission with only 65,000 miles on it. gm is junk.
@@boogerfromthatmovie4257oil change intervals?
@@bradleymenezes6196 every 5000 miles we changed the motor oil. each engine blew the head gaskets sucking in coolant and breaking rods.
Thank you for sharing this. I instinctively turn it off every time I start to drive and it's really good to confirm that it's the right thing to do. Cheers .
Thank you Scotty ; very informative video.
This also goes with hvac industry. The higher efficiency units wear out much faster. Blame the epa
Thanks so much for making sense of this insanity. Scotty. This is part of our vehicle starting process on the CX-5 - to disable i-Stop.
I hate this feature too. Really bad on a super hot day in Chicago because when it would turn off at a stop, the A/C would turn off too!
There are auto idle stoppers available that can be installed. I installed one on our 2023 honda pilot. It automatically turns off the feature after start. You can manually turn it on if you like. Basically it defaults the setting to off upon startup but otherwise works as expected.
Same things are available for the vw atlas…ask me how I know 😊
Thanks for addressing this. My Kia was acting like a horse in a race when stopped and idling weird. Checked it out online and it was suggested to put something beside the button to hold it down and no worries. Yep, best idea. I could NEVER remember to turn off that button. Plus, it irks me the control these monsters keep trying to dominate over us, the consumer!
I think this is where Scotty's usual saying " follow the money" comes into play, if cars wear out faster with the stop start system there is a very great incentive for the off button to be withdrawn, sadly once the gaurantee expires worn out parts or whole cars are good news for the car companies. Good news for the government too, extra tax is paid if people are forced to repair or replace their cars.
This was so useful when I rented a Chevrolet Silverado from U-Haul (I know you hate Chevy's but that's besides the point). The only difference was, when you push the button on this one, the light goes off.
Most hybrids also have start stop systems. I remember when Toyota Prius' were having problems also due to the start/stop. In that case it was the piston cylinder walls were pitting as a result of constant start/stops. Alas, Toyota reported the issue was fixed with later models.
The prius does not have a "starter" like traditional vehicles. It is started by one of the electric motors..
Prii (I think is the plural for Prius) use the pretty beefy motor/generator that stays connected to the engine at all times to start the engine. That motor also spins the engine up to much higher rpm’s before the spark plugs fire than a traditional starter does. That helps get everything lubricated before the shock of the cylinders firing happens.
I agree that the Stop-Start feature is a bad idea! I had a 2012 BMW 535i with the S/S system. Instead of turning it off everytime I started the car, I had my BMW dealer reflash the car's software set to turn the S/S feature off permanently. That did the trick!
Scottie would make a great orchestra conductor
the jeep I wanted with the features I wanted only came with the start/stop crap which I didn't want. at first I would use the button to turn it off, but there were times that I used to do short trips from one place to another and I would either forget to turn it off or I would get tired of turning it off. so all I did was disconnect the switch under the hood that tells you when you're hood is open and it automatically disables the start/stop function and now I don't have to worry about ever pushing the button. I've been driving it like this for years with no issues.
Thank you so, so much for making this video!! I've been meaning to send you a question about whether I should trust the auto-off or keep disabling it every time I start my Civic 2023. I thought all the start/stopping/restarting might cause extra wear and also drain the battery, so I've been hitting the disable every time I start it up. I was worried there might be a downside to doing this. Guess not. Thanks so much!
I have what I believe is proof it wears an engine. I have a 2018 Audi A5 and turned the auto start off since the car was almost new. It burns no oil. Audi dealership technicians said, and Audi warranty aligns it, normal oil consumption is one quart per 1500 miles and they get reports of oil burning from people who leave auto-start on.
Perhaps the crankshaft bearings will last longer than standard ones, but what about the piston rings, the camshafts and valves?
I'm in U.K got a VW Golf diesel mk 8. I always turn this function off but even more annoying I turn off lane assist which is so strong it can pull the steering wheel strongly.
If a car even HAS that button on the dash, there’s a 100% chance i’m not buying it 😂
