Is it just easy to be blinded by nostalgia, or are the good old days really better than today? In this video, I look back at all of my years playing videogames, from the Super Nintendo, Game boy Color, Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP, PS3 and now PS4. I reminisce about my favorite memories and talk about how gaming today compares to the past. I hope you'll enjoy it!

They turned to shit after 2010 which concludes massive changes in their upper managment and resign of John Riccitiello their previous CEO. @@taxjax dead..... you can say dead. My best friends and I have always kept up after they moved during high school. We even ended up creating a clan as we got into Rust. I put a couple thousand of hours into games with them (Rust, CS-GO, R6, and a couple other) but in the end one of them came and visit and we hung out, but then the very next day he passed away in a car accident. This was about a year ago, but pretty much by now the clan has pretty much fallen apart. The last message on our main discord server is the notice for his funeral and though there is some activity on our secondary server it is almost non-existent. With only a few people active only like 1 every couple of weeks. Life happened and we all fell apart. I do miss the days of pulling an all nighters with my friends, but thats just memories now. I guess one of my favorite quotes is from Winnie the Poo. It goes "We didn't realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun."

I feel like it's been ages ago because I enjoyed it so much. Listening to some OSTs from it, especially free roam music, throws me in a nostalgia and makes me feel like I played it long ago. It’s not just a matter or nostalgia for games, but for life in general. Fact of the matter is, no matter how hard you might try to remake those feelings and memories, the past is just that. The past. And as you get older, you change, the things and people around you change, and time moves on. Hell, you don’t even need video games or large sources of entertainment to find this satisfaction in life.
Trying to form new experiences, learning from mistakes, and finding things to work towards should be the priority no matter how old you are, or how jaded you could become as the years roll by. It’s not that you can’t look back on the good ol’ days with rose tinted glasses, but you can’t let yourself get too caught up in it, otherwise be left behind as the rest of life continues on.

You should think about it this way...plenty people who were younger and grew up playing the games that were a part of the “good old days” are now game developers, writers, animators, etc. and one day we will see more of them become publishers, hopefully they will right a lot of the wrongs we’ve seen in the last 10 years BUT with all of the remasters and remakes coming out it’s evident that there is a big demand for nostalgia and since they’re taking off and the industry is always growing and aging a lot of those mechanics and gameplay types will likely make their way into new titles. Look at the indie scene with games like shovel knight and cup head...those are new titles being made with another generations “good old days” in mind. Studios like Ninja Theory and Remedy have launched amazing games lately clearly inspired by certain games from the 360 era

I miss gaming about 10-15 years ago. I was a kid, never knew what I'd pick up at the shop, everything was a surprise, so much variety. Now we know every single game coming out, what it looks like, plays like, the story, the mechanics , if it's good or bad, everything is known before they're even out. It's just boring, I can't go to a game shop now without the knowledge of every single game on the shelf. And there's less than there used to be. There used to be rows of games in different deals (5 for £10, 4 for £20, 2 for £20, etc) and I could flip through them all having different games behind each and get hidden gems. It was great. Now that's gone, there's now just rows on the shelves and nothing behind each game and they're all overpriced and again I know everything about all of them.
TL;DR The internet squeezes every little thing you could find out about a game before it's out. Boring. Let me find out myself.

I used to think this way until I played Breath of the Wild and Nier Automata (for gameplay and story respectively). These games showed me that there is still so much that video games can do, so many places that they can go.
It isn't time, or just you becoming jaded, it is, honestly, lack of creativity, talent, or most importantly, balls on the part of game devs.
Back in the day, everybody was trying to blow the socks off of their audience all the time. People created genres, game mechanics and concepts like fucking clockwork. Instead of trying to just add a gimmick to an already established formula and call it a day like most AAA games today, studios tried to _create_ new formulas.
Most of all though is that AAA games are now seen as too big or too expensive to fail so they take zero risks, and indie games just don't have the budget or manpower to fully realise the potential of their ideas and thus shrink the scope of their games.
It seems my last hope seems to rest in Japanese AAA devs, since because the fact that they've always spent far less money than western devs is counterbalanced by AAA growing budgets, means that they are now in the same situation western AAA was in last generation, with games being big enough to be feature rich but small enough that they can still experiment.
Although it seems like that time may be passing for them too, as they are spending more and more money on large scale projects, (FF15, MGSV) that turn out... less than groundbreaking, like western games did.

Lack of creativity surely is a major factor. You should try games like Superhot, which is the only game since Portal to truly do something new in design. Or all the Arkane games, especially Dishonored 2 and Prey, as these games let you explore their vast set of mechanics and systemic/emergent gameplay. They don't assume the player in front of the PC/Console is braindead like so many games nowadays do.
Lots of games are just so schematic today with their Ubisoft formulas and micro transactions. It's just gotten harder to find the good ones.

The problem is that these things that they have done over and over or called cliche is unique back then because there are a lot of unexplored ideas. The Example is : the villain is the father of the protagonists. It's easy to come up with something like that. While now a lot of things are already explored literally every idea for dramatic plot etc is already used. Like another example is the main protagonist's family died. Gaming's roots derived from the very interpersonal experience of back on the box marketing, necessitated innovation, and novel game play hooks. I remember when I described 3 concepts for a game to a girl I was seeing, the first being an astronaut has to amass a army of vegetables to survives, the second a persian prince who can manipulate time, and finally a Japanese girl capturing the spirits of ghosts...she only believed that one of these could have been a real game. I don't blame her, gaming has homogenized to the point that everything plays the same.

The story is so good, the soundtrack is amazing, the animations (specifically the facial animations and lip syncing) is unparalleled to any other video game I have ever played. The ending is satisfying yet depressing and Rockstar did an amazing job taking a character like John Marston, being the best character rockstar created, and then 8 years later making Arthur Morgan the best character rockstar has ever made. The Extraordinary Spider-Man
I'd imagine that playing them back in 2007 would just be the same as playing them now - it's the same game right? To be honest, they kind of marked where the decline in gaming started. A lot of games before Assassin's Creed were very good, but Assassin's Creed was much more cinematic and less gameplay than any other game at the time. A paired animation combat system is pretty awful, and it makes combat too easy. You had little control over the parkour - it was like a magnet. They practically made the game play for you, and in doing so, they sacrificed gameplay for visuals. Yes, it was something new, and I enjoyed playing it to chill out on, but I think it was a step in the wrong direction, that began to lead to the state of gaming we are in today.

Great video Robin, and I totally agree with this.
I'm a few years older than you and I used to get gaming magazines, which released demo discs and I'd play them to death as a kid because I couldn't afford to buy all the titles that were being released.
I'd spend weeks or months saving up for one game, playing it continuously, and over all I appriciated the content more than I do now. That's because you valued it, there was less choice, and there was more time to immerse yourself in the worlds.
Now there is so much content competing for your attention that you get so overwhelmed.
Uncharted was a series that got me back into gaming for the same reasons you mentioned, but I spend more time supporting and playing indie titles than AAAs right now because in a weird way, indies give me the nostalgia that I lack from the bigger titles.

It meant that games could still have value even after they were done, but nowadays, it just means devs can cut up a game and sell it back to you. I have the same sentiment towards patches. Before they existed, devs had to make sure the game they put out was polished because there was no way to fix it once the game shipped. But now, they can rush out a buggy mess and then say they will fix it down the line.

Most AAA games either try to do everything and end up doing nothing particulary well (All Ubisoft games) , or are riskless copies of other succesfull games (Most Battlefield and CoD games).
As oposed to AAA games, Indie games have to be original to catch the attention of potential customers (Sunless sea having perhaps the most original setting and atmosphere I can think of), and due to having less resources, they have to make sure to do a few things very well. (Super Meat Boy being a good example of a great 2d platformer).
Older games are often better than newer ones simply because back then there wasn't as many manipulative monetization methods, and I think that more games was a result of passion back then, which is why you would get more original games (Morrowind, Sly Cooper 1 to 3, and Bully).

The hardest part to admit is that it’s all part of the process of moving on. Won’t be the same because it can’t be, it’s lighting in the bottle that will can’t be captured again and even if it could it won’t be the same experience.
However, that being said, I think there is something to be said about games that keep getting sequels. Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed are exceptions, but for others I just wish they would have a concluding installment be left alone to be part of the times they were made in. There’s a reason why so many hate the newer installments like Last of Us Part 2 and the Battlefield games. If the gaming the industry is going to change and move on, then that should apply to games themselves too when it comes to ending it when it should.

It's funny because I thought video games were going down the shitter around 2009-2011. Publishers were starting to notice how much money they could make off of DLC's, so many AAA titles were just brown and grey military shooters that were trying to cash in on Call of Duty's success which resulted in a lot of established IP's losing their identity, and it was also around the time when companies starting pushing their one-time use online passes, which punished people who bought games second-hand.
