Phil Collins has multiple iconic songs from the 80’s, he’s one of those artists like Sade where no matter what race you are or what genre of music you listen to you’ve heard his records if you’re of a certain age
When I was 16 in 1981 and this song hit the radio, there was nothing else like it - it stood out massively - but just got into the top 20 - at 19 - on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. But it is an iconic song of the 80’s.
This was on the first episode of Miami Vice. It was basically a two hour movie, there had never been anything like it on TV before. It was gritty, things didn't always go right, it was different, Miami Vice.
Word up. First and only cop show except "The Wire" to ever show how bad a situation could go in the line of duty. Crockett and Tubbs was willing to risk it all that night. That episode is classic television.
Yes watch a live performance of this, so glad you enjoyed his music! Back in the 80's his music was influential on the TV show Maimi Vice (worth a watch for the 80s culture and music alone) and he also did some guest apperiances on the show too. Always love your questions, and commentary.
Singer/drummer, and the drum fill at the break is PERFECT. This song game out in the Miami Vice era - they used popular music in a lot of episodes, and this song had a memorable spot in one episode. This song does SUCH a great job of setting a mood! Collins was also in the band Genesis - he's super talented.
One of my favorite songs from my late teens and early twenties. Phil Collins was also a favorite to sing along with, as he stayed within my vocal range.
Phil Collins - Finally... The First Farewell Tour Paris is one of the (imo) the best intro to a live performance, next to Ministry - In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up live
Phil Collins is only one of three drummers that I can remember also being lead vocals in a band (Genesis). Alone with Don Henley of the Eagles (check out Hotel California live.) and Kelly Keagy (check out Sister Christian)
I love Phil Collins he was real big in the 80s. He was part of the band call Genesis, he was the drummer and lead singer for the band. I was going to suggest a song to you but somehow you found it😍🎶
Thanks for another amazing reaction and of course I look absolutely stunning as always il always show love and support to Ur channel il share Ur channel with my friend and family
Phil Collins scored a massive solo hit in 1981 w/ 'In the air tonight'... from his debut solo album 'Face value'... It was a record that he wrote after his separation and divorce from his first wife, mother of his kids... And there is a live version available and it's an intense song. Phil Collins became an unlikely pop superstar in the 80's - he was short, balding and pudgy... but he had an incredible voice that was instantly recognizable and developed a stage presence that captivated arenas and stadiums worldwide. Phil Collins has upbeat songs and slow numbers... His hits include - "Don't lose my number"... 'Two hearts'... 'Easy lover' (w/ Philip Bailey)... 'Another day in paradise'... "I don't care anymore" ... 'Sussudio'... 'Against all odds'... Originally, Phil Collins began his career acting in England as a child star... His life changed in the early 70's when he started playing drums and joined a musically ambitious band called Genesis. They wrote complicated songs that required excellent musicianship and were fronted by a charismatic singer Peter Gabriel... Phil Collins also sang harmonies while playing drums. In 1975, Peter Gabriel quit Genesis due to family demands; he would soon start a successful solo career... Genesis auditioned hundreds of singers but the band noticed that Phil Collins sang better than any potential singer... Although reluctant to do lead vocals, Phil Collins gave in and recorded vocals for the Genesis album 'A Trick of the Tail' in 1976... Genesis were in debt and not selling commercially at that point, so it was a shock that 'A Trick of the Tail' sold more copies than their past catalog of albums and recouped most of their debt... Phil Collins had to learn how to sing up front while a session musician played drums onstage. By 1978, Genesis were becoming a phenomenon... but Phil Collins' marriage was failing. He took a break to salvage the relationship in 1979 but came back to the UK in defeat and had a new batch of songs he had written from his heartbreak and disappointment. Genesis did record some of them... The rest Phil Collins recorded on his own for a solo album 'Face Value'... in 1981. It shocked everyone by outselling the Genesis albums 'Duke' (1980) and 'Abacab' (1981) .. at 5x platinum in the US. With Genesis selling millions alongside his solo albums, Phil Collins alternated between Genesis and solo tours in the 80's and early 90's... His biggest solo album 'No jacket required' in 1985 sold 12x platinum. In 1991, Phil Collins released his last album w/ Genesis - "We can't dance"... and followed it up w/ his 1993 solo album 'Both sides'... He soon announced that he was leaving Genesis and winding down his solo career as well w/ 'Dance into the light' (1996) and 'Testify' (2002) Genesis recorded 1 album 'Calling all stations' in 1997 w/ singer Ray Wilson, but it failed commercially and the band decided to end their recording career and part ways w/ Wilson. However, Phil Collins' 3rd marriage ended in divorce, so he reunited w/ Genesis for a tour in 2007... By 2021, Phil Collins' health was deteriorating and he couldn't play drums anymore... So, he announced a final world tour w/ Genesis in 2022/ '23 dubbed 'The Last Domino?' Phil Collins performed the tour sitting down and singing onstage, while his son Nic Collins played drums alongside the original Genesis members Tony Banks (keyboards) and Mike Rutherford (guitar)
P.s. you left out the part how the divorce happened because she xheated on him w/ on of his "friends," and this song is about that "friend". At least, that's how I remember it.
Hello Mia my love 🌹 I am so glad you did this song!!! Phil Collins is the one, who is playing the drum solo, when the song picks up. In the air tonight, has been featured in some shows and at least one movie.
This is one of greatest artists ever and yes that's he's voice all the way Phil Collins one best singers and drummer's ever he's been for 60 years get know more phil .
Phil did the whole entire Tarzan soundtrack. You need to do a reaction to him doing this live. Also the scene from Miami Vice this premiered on is ice cold as well.
Miami Vice Season 1 Episode 1 (near the end of the episode) (setting - late at night) IN THE AIR TONIGHT begins to play in the background as Crockett and Tubbs r potentially traveling to a gun fight, in Sonny Crocketts’ Ferrari Daytona Spyder 365 GTS. Tubbs is checking/loading his double barreled shotgun. Crockett asks Tubbs, “how much time we got?” Tubbs: “25 minutes.“ Sonny pulls off the side of the road to use a pay phone. He calls his wife - whom he’s been having marital difficulties with - and asks: “I need to know something Caroline. The way we used to be together, I don’t mean lately but before, it was real wasn’t it?“ Caroline responds, “yeah, it was ….. u bet it was. Sonny, what’s wrong?” Sonny replies, “nothing Caroline.” He hangs up, returns to the car and as they drive off, is when you hear Phil Collins’ drum crescendo.
Phil Collins was all over the radio back in the 80's. He was part of the band Genesis then went on to have a great solo career. He had so many good songs to check out like "Sussudio", "Easy Lover", "You Can't Hurry Love" (cover), "Two Hearts", "Against All Odds", "I Missed Again", "Only You Know and I Know", "Don't Lose My Number", "Who Said I Would", "Take Me Home", "I Don't Care Anymore", and Genesis songs like "No Reply At All", "Invisible Touch", "Tonight Tonight Tonight", "Abacab", and "Land of Confusion". As for other suggestions, just got into the band Chickenfoot. It's a rock superband with an 80's vibe and includes Sammy Hagar (solo/Van Halen), Joe Satriani (solo/various bands), Michael Anthony (Van Halen), and Chad Smith (Red Hot chili Peppers). Some good songs to check out: "Highway Star", "Turnin Left", "My Kind of Girl", "Get It Up", "Up Next", and "Big Foot".
You should check out the live version of this song because Phil is one of the few drummer/ singers and especially when the drums really hit because it’s impressive to see an artist able to sing while playing drums. That’s his voice completely auto tune didn’t exist yet though studios could modify a voice slightly but I don’t think his voice is edited.
you should listen to anything phil collins is involved with, absolutely fantastic. and you should listen to this song live in concert. unbelievable. thanks for the reaction....
5:35 - That classic drum break! An air-drummer's wet dream (and an actual drummer haha)! A few more random recommendations of songs to react to: "Make a Move", "Get Well", "Hope of Morning", "Under the Knife" all by Icon for Hire; "Second Chance", "I'll Follow You", "Get Up" all by Shinedown
everybody is going to say to watch the live version and it was also on a good soundtrack and it’s so seductive and so well put together… Appreciate your reaction
One of the sickest tracks. When you hear this, you can't help but think of Miami Vice with Crockett and Tubbs driving in the white Testarossa in Brothers Keeper 😂. It was a huge drama series in the 80's BTW and In The Air Tonight was the theme music for that episode which was the pilot. Some other amazing track, Against All Odds was an amazing slow jam at parties back in the day, A Groovy Kinda Love, Evreyday, Easy Lover is incredible, Don't Loose My Number, Another Day in Paradise, One More Night...check them out and there's so much more to list.
Phil learned to play the drums before he could even read music and was mostly, self taught. One of his managers, from years ago and who I think may have produced some of his music, happens to be a friend of my families.
Hi Mia. Loved the react and some others I've first seen tonight. You have yet to hit the jackpot in songs/bands that really touch the heart!! Led Zeppelin is a must try. They have nearly 100 songs that are nothing less than an 8. All bring emotion. Maybe try "Stairway to Heaven" from the 1973 MSG concert. The best band ever and 4-ever more. You like emotion in songs, LZ brings all emotions!!! Can't wait for that react. :)
Phil was an awesome drummer with Genesis but became more of their lead vocalist over time when Peter Gabriel left. They have tons of great songs from both eras, try Home by the Sea, great in studio, even better live. Great stuff beautiful Mia, enjoy! 🎵🎤🎹
I would love to see you react to Righteous Brothers -- Unchained Melody (Live, 1965). It's one of the greatest love songs of all time and almost 60 years later this live performance is incredible!
Probably THE most famous switchups in music history. Song came out in the early 80's. I think it debuted on the first episode of Miami Vice. It was huge and has been since. It's actually a song about his divorce. He wrote it as a way of coping. Definitely check out the live version! It's a bit long with the build-up but SO worth it!
Great reaction. Song was used on Miami Vice. Bohemian Rhapsody Song by Queen Or Stairway to Heaven Song by Led Zeppelin. If you decide to do a film reaction then The Crow Brandon Lee version.
Yes - Phil Collins voice is very unique and great. Although he started as a drummer in the Band "Genesis" in the 70s. If you want to see he's vocal abilities in a creepy but really great song you could try out "Mama" by "Genesis" in the live version in Knebworth in 1990 (but you could also check out Wembley in 87). Anyway - I should stop my journey through your channel now - cause we don't wanna get addicted, right? 😀 Wish you all the best.
Always interested as to whether people prefer the songs Phil Collins did as the lead singer of Genesis or his solo material. Personally, I go back and forth on that question with no clear cut, definitive answer. Some great Phil Collins suggestions: That's All, Sussudio, Take Me Home, Against All Odds, Easy Lover (duet with Phillip Bailey).
Sweet!! Instantly brings me back to Miami Vice!! Great reaction, but I can't lie I'm sad you didn't react to the live version from Paris 2004. That's the best that song will ever sound. The man is incredible. Still though I absolutely love this reaction, and I'm still happy to see you react to this great song
Another thing to note... Since you said that you like to play drums, Phil Collins should be your reference because in addition to being a Exceptional singer is one of the best drummers of all time, you should see him live. I recommend it. 😊❤
You should do the live version of this song. It's amazing! This is his actual voice. This song came out before the term "alternative rock" exisited. This was considered pop rock.
He used a harmonizer mixed with compression to achieve that sound in his voice. Keyboards, heavy sustain/fuzz on the 🎸and doubling on the vocals as well. Came out in '81. Many hits by Phil Collins and his band Genesis during that period. Abacab is another hit that has a theme. The musical notes A,B,A,C,A,B are used throughout the song. Fun fact! 🤘😎🤘
Phil Collins also sang for the band Genesis. His voice is real no auto tune. This song was made famous in the original TV show Miami vice. So Mia the Latino angel you must listen to another Latino Santana featuring Rob Thomas singing smooth. You'll love it an wanna get up an salsa.❤
Oh God, that Tarzan song. I worked retail when that came out, and it was playing CONSTANTLY in the stores. If I ever hear that damn song again it will be too soon. 😛 EVERYONE becomes a drummer on this song when that riff comes in at the end. You simply can't hear it without wanting to beatbox along with it if you know it's coming.
I was waiting to find somebody here to mention 2pac & "Starin Through My Rear View". Killer Track: Slick, slight remix of the original music mixed with 2pac's delivery & lyrics is poetry in motion!
His son Nick played drums for him at the last domino tour the song is called " no son of mine" in Chicago ,phil started having medical problems so he would sit down through the tour His son nick also played drums for him on the " not dead yet" tour. His son started these tours with him at 16 yrs old.can you please react to that song.
Phill Colins pretty popular in the early 80s, he has other great songs. If you ever heard of an event called "Live Aide" a two separate concert event with multiple bands playing in concert where 1 concert was playing at Wembley Stadium London and JFK stadium in Philadelphia. Phil Collins played at both events, he played at Wembley then after he quickly flew to Philadelphia for the other event.
Today's suggestion: The Geto Boys- My mind is playing tricks on me. It's the beat Kodak black used for Transportin'. Originally I think the beat came from an Isaac Hayes song(Hung Up on my Baby). Another cool Phil Collins song is Another Day in Paradise.
That's his voice...nothing was fake then...this is pop/rock...real musicians...this song was also popular among hardcore hip hop heads...this is the 80s
Definitely need to check out the live version.

It's actually a song about his divorce. He wrote it as a way of coping. Definitely check out the live version! It's a bit long with the build-up but SO worth it!
And Phil plays the drums ausome !!!!
The live version is levels above the studio version
Now that's what I'm talking about 🔥 😊😊😊 hey react to Phil collins group called Genesis "in too deep "
Definitely check out the Rollingstones in there song “ Missing You”
This is a great song by him I live this song
one of the most banger bangers of all time
Great reaction. Song was used on Miami Vice.
Bohemian Rhapsody
Song by Queen
Or
Stairway to Heaven
Song by Led Zeppelin.
If you decide to do a film reaction then The Crow Brandon Lee version.
This is pop! At that time rock sounds were popular.
live version is better
Yes - Phil Collins voice is very unique and great. Although he started as a drummer in the Band "Genesis" in the 70s.
If you want to see he's vocal abilities in a creepy but really great song you could try out "Mama" by "Genesis" in the live version in Knebworth in 1990 (but you could also check out Wembley in 87).
Anyway - I should stop my journey through your channel now - cause we don't wanna get addicted, right? 😀
Wish you all the best.
Look for the live concert from 2007...Great one!!
The song is called “Play crack the Sky” the band is called “Brand New” its One of my favorite all-time songs.
Stairway to Heaven -Led Zep
Sweet!! Instantly brings me back to Miami Vice!! Great reaction, but I can't lie I'm sad you didn't react to the live version from Paris 2004. That's the best that song will ever sound. The man is incredible. Still though I absolutely love this reaction, and I'm still happy to see you react to this great song
By far the best phil collins song in my opinion
Phil Collins is also another lead singer who plays the drums like Don Henley from the Eagles. His band was Genesis.
There is a live version of it and it has meaning to Phil about one of his friends look it up !!!
The liiv version is more powerful & u can really get how phils voice really is & u can see what instruments are being used in the song
Genesis, Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel are great.
Another thing to note... Since you said that you like to play drums, Phil Collins should be your reference because in addition to being a Exceptional singer is one of the best drummers of all time, you should see him live. I recommend it. 😊❤
The song “one mic” by Nas does that build up and has that switch up in the first half and then does the opposite in the second half of the song.
Good jam reminds me of
Risky Business with Tom Cruise good flick!💯
top ten greatest songs ever made.
Fun fact! 🤘😎🤘
Please do the live version ❤
Watch his last performance in Brazil I think it is so much more emotional 😘
Miami Vice this is one of the best songs from that show...
EVERYONE becomes a drummer on this song when that riff comes in at the end. You simply can't hear it without wanting to beatbox along with it if you know it's coming.
I’m glad you loved it babe❤
Need see live version.
Suggestion: "Let's Get Down" by Tony! Toni! Toné!
Hello yes watch the live version of this song it sounds alot better than the music video phil is a killer on the drums.
In This Moment did an amazing cover of this song
Miss Mia's take on music is inspirational to say the least
I think this was recorded for season 1 episode 1 of Miami Vice. I believe it was the first time NBC changed from mono to stereo audio.
Go down the list of Phil. His best music was during the Miami vice era.
Tupac used this sample. The song is "staring at the world through my rearview"
The Tarzan song is "You'll be In My Heart" I suggest "Take Me Home" then with the band Genesis "Land Of Confusion." "In The Air Tonight" is a classic.
That's his voice...nothing was fake then...this is pop/rock...real musicians...this song was also popular among hardcore hip hop heads...this is the 80s
Ther is a live version on TH-cam
