Radio Africa (by Latin Quarter) is also great, came out few years later -- definitely a one-hit wonder, but one of those really good 80's political songs. Are political pop chart songs even a thing anymore?
Toto had several hit songs, particularly in the 1980s. Some of their most famous hits include: 1. “Africa” (1982) - Perhaps their most iconic song, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. 2. “Rosanna” (1982) - A major hit that peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award. 3. “Hold the Line” (1978) - One of their earliest hits, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. 4. “I’ll Be Over You” (1986) - A softer ballad that reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. 5. “I Won’t Hold You Back” (1983) - A Top 10 hit, peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. 6. “99” (1979) - Another popular song, reaching No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. 7. “Pamela” (1988) - A later hit that reached No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. These songs showcase Toto’s blend of rock, pop, and elements of jazz and funk, contributing to their success and enduring popularity.
Toto was comprised of top notch, studio session players who played on thousands of other records and singles. This band had the best musicians in the musical world playing together. That’s why they’re so good.
Hi Mia, 80’s music add the genre and it flat out blows out the competition of today’s music...But your lovely presence sharing your thoughts and reactions to said music is what makes this era of music so “ICONIC”.....many blessings today and always....
I saw Toto live here in Finland about seven years ago, and the REALLY are musicians. I took my daughter with me who was 12 at the time. The show was amazing! Porcaro on the keys etc. Going to see them again in February
Toto began as a collection of highly regarded session musicians. They are super talented musicians and in heavy demand. They decided to do it for themselves and had great success.
Classic!!! Nas used this sample on his track "New World" from the "Nastradamus" Album in 1999 🎼 🎵 which was my favorite song, this Toto Song will never get old to me if you ask me
Fun facts: this song ("Africa") is from the "Toto IV" album, released by the band in 1982, which is the same year Michael Jackson's "Thriller" came out. The interesting thing is that, according to Wikipedia, "several members of the band Toto were involved in the album's recording and production", meaning "Thriller". In MJ's hit rock song "Beat It", for example, the iconic guitar solo is played by legendary musician Eddie Van Halen, whereas Toto's guitarist Steve Lukather is the one who plays the rhythm guitar riffs throughout the whole song. Plus, the top-single "Human Nature" (in which Lukather also plays the guitar) was originally written by Steve Porcaro, Toto's keyboardist. After accidentally listening to a demo of the song, that was in a tape recording with several other tracks sent by the band's vocalist, Thriller's co-producer Quincy Jones (who recently passed away, at 91) thought it was perfect for MJ to sing in the new album they were putting together. The song ended being mostly re-written lirically, while kept very much the same musically, and added to the official tracklist of "Thriller" (which turned out to be the best-selling album of all time worldwide). Finally, I really think you should react to MJ's "Human Nature" (Live at Wembley, London, 1988, from the "Bad World Tour") - the original studio recording release is indeed fantastic, but there isn't an official music video and, honestly, I believe this live version is nearly perfect, with Michael showing all his singing and dancing skills at his peek.
I didn't see this before posting my own comment. Nice write-up. And yes, although you sometimes have to take Wikipedia entries like a tequila, it's 100% true about their involvement in the Thriller album and Human Nature. Speaking of which, I agree, Mia should react to Michael Jackson's Human Nature!
...they have been mentioned already, I can only emphasize them even more: listen to 'Hold the Line' and 'Rosanna' - in the days, I owned a Toto album, and I also liked their deep cuts, but these are top-3 must-listens of them! 😎
The 80s Music was great...there is so much to experience vor you beauty💟...Bands like Styx,Loverboy,Duran Duran,Manfred Mann's Earthband,Genesis,Supertramp,Barclay James Harvest, and so many, many more....
Hi Mia! I love 80’s music I know some ppl will say it’s corny but this music would remind of my mom. Even though she is no longer with us. It’s nice to have the pop songs she would play and sing to me when I was growing up and makes me less sad. If you are looking for a cool music video I would recommend Ah-ha- Take On Me
THANK YOU for reacting to one of my favourite songs ever! 😊😊😊 Toto featured heavily on Michael Jackson's Thriller album, were responsible for the song Human Nature, and had a number of their own hits. They were session musicians for other bands too. One of the most underrated bands for their influence on western music
Now that you've heard it, you can NEVER escape from it. You'll hear it in the grocery store, malls, restaurants, facebook memes, TH-cam shorts. Everywhere. It's just the way of the land.
The guys in this band also played a pivotal role in Michael Jackson’s Thriller from what I understand. They operated as session players on the album and I believe that one of them actually wrote Human Nature. I was a young kid when this song came out but I didn’t hear it for the first time, at least not that I remember, until I was at a local bar one night, and everybody absolutely went crazy when this song came on, lol.
Toto had about 4 big hits. This came out in 1982 when I was 10 or 11 (bday mid-year). This video was on MTV every couple of hours. It's one of those songs that has so much atmosphere, when it's over, it feels like you've read a novel. 😆👍👌
Very nice song and group…yacht rock nice and relaxing…..love it! Most of the music today is not good at all….IMO older songs have more meaning and doesn’t demean women or men in many cases! Love it your reaction is always great ❤️☮️🙏🏻
This song was a big hit in the 1980’s and is a very catchy tune 😂 Another song and video I would suggest is “ I can’t go for that “ by Hall and Oates , it has a similar vibe and feel to it as this song and is also from the 1980’s
😂 Hall and Oats - I Can't Go For That is a great suggestion! Michael Jackson admitted to and apologised for ripping off the bass line and other elements of I Can't Go For That for his song Billie Jean. Billie Jean was arguably the biggest song from the Thriller album. The session musicians that recorded the Thriller album for Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones were members of Toto. Full circle moment 😂
Written by David Paich and the late Jeff Porcaro. Legendary 1080s song 🎵. Toto continues to perform in 2024. Paich on keyboards and vocals in the verses. Bobby Kimball on vocals in the chorus. Definitely a legendary band. Before the name was created, the members played with other musicians. In 1982, some members played with Michael McDonald, the late Donna Summer, Chicago and the late Michael Jackson. In the same year as playing in their band Toto. They worked like a dog 🐕! L 🤣L. I am so impressed you liked… I’m enjoying watching you learn new groups and new bands. It’s so fun to watch. And I just subscribe because I see you’re genuineness You’re so much fun to watch with even if I know the song
It's a great song from a special era of music and talent. One I was growing up in, so maybe I'm biased! We all look back on the music we grew up with and thinks it's special, I suppose? Anyway, it's great to see you as a young person getting to experience what we did when we were young! Makes it mean something. Thank you and best wishes to you
Well I really have to say that you really have gained a fan in me today as I just love your beautiful personality and I can see that you really are taking in some truly amazing music and appreciating all the music I've witnessed you listening to baring Black sabbath but I'm really enjoying hearing your views on all the music and I simply look forward to watching more of you enjoying the music and giving your point of view that is positive and I must say that you really are blessed with natural beauty for sure and I say that as a total compliment to a fine young lady yes indeed keep up the great work
there is a fantastic video on TH-cam that isolates each individual instrumental track. its amazing how your mind will fill in the rest of the instruments once you've listened to this song enough. it also has one of the hardest drum rhythm tricks in music. a lot of drummers even the great ones will play it close but not quite get it right due to the idiosyncrasies of his drumming style
Warms my heart to know you love this band and song. They came out in my era and it’s one of my favorites. Might I recommend another song by Toto. *Hold The Line*
Rosana my personal fav, but this song is great too, sure others have said it all below, but they have great catalogue of songs and hits, great reaction btw, ya have good taste and an ear for music.🤘
This song is bigger, but "Hold the Line" is my vote as their best song! I'mm actually surprised you have never heard Africa before, they play it everywhere where I live, basically anywhere you shop.
Love the chill vibe on this song. It takes you away and gets your mind off a stressful day. I agree with the comments below about "Rosanna" and "Hold The Line", you really should check those out.
Toto was one of those bands that had very talented individuals in it. Most of them did side projects with other artists. Most notable are The Jacksons. The "Victory" album might as well be The Jacksons featuring Toto.
The funny part is this song was tacked on in the last minute as an after thought. David Paich, the guy who sings the verses, wrote it, but the other guys hated it. They felt it was like a novelty song. Needless to say they have since changed their mind. Rosanna, from the same album, rivals it for their biggest hit though. These guys are some of the most prolific session musicians, (eg. hired guns), ever. If it was recorded in L.A. in the 70s, 80s or 90s, more likely than not at least one of them plays on it. Meaning you've heard them more than you know. What session musicians do - and these guys are some of the best at it - is coming up with those tasty and cool parts that makes the song tick - you know, the cool guitar riff, keyboard or bass line, or groovy drum beat. And nailing it in one or two takes. (Time was money back in the day when recording studios were multi million dollar installations). So, Toto are widely revered by other musicians, but they also have a back catalogue of hits, so they have a lot of general fans too.
Rosanna was another great Toto hit. They met as studio musicians and formed a band. Fun fact: They played all the music on Michael Jackson’s Thriller album
Toto's band members were studio musicians so very much in demand apart from their own music. They had a bunch of hits. Hold the Line, Rosanna, I won't hold you back, 99, I'll be over you, among others. 99 is interesting...it's a love song but uses a number instead of a girl's name. 😂
Toto was just one of many exceptional bands from that era and had a pile of hits but my favorite band is Rush, imo the best power trio in rock history and one you havent reacted too yet. Check them out. 😊
You want even older & with your appreciation for vocals, you'll enjoy Bee Gees "too much heaven" & George Michael "Careless Whisper" 1991 in Rio concert clip-Both are Masterpieces!!!
Toto had a few hits. Try "Hold The Line" next, you'll love it. Toto's lead guitarist, Steve Lukather, played on some of Michael Jackson's albums. He wrote and recorded the main riff to Beat It, for example.
Toto was a great band that was made up of some of the finest studio musicians on the West Coast. They became a very successful band with some great hits. You said something interesting, "being able to close your eyes and envision yourself in their world." There's another very well known band from the 1960s through the 1980s and even later that fits your expression perfectly: That band is "Pink Floyd," and they have a number of albums, especially those created in the 1970s through 1980 that will do exactly that. Their albums like "Dark Side of the Moon," "Wish You Were Here", "Animals," "The Wall" and to a lesser extent, "Meddle" will take the listener on a journey. Frankly, many bands from that era (60s-80s) will do that, including a band you recently discovered, "Rush." If you can, please set aside about 45 minutes to listen to the entire Pink Floyd album, "Dark Side of the Moon." I believe you'll be amazed and in wonder from what they did in the recording studio back in 1972, with the album released more than 50 years ago!
Toto was a massive band in the 1970s-80s. One thing that I learned recently, "Human Nature" by Michael Jackson was originally a Toto song that they then gave to MJ. Also, I recommend "Georgy Porgy" by Toto.
This official video version of "Africa" edited out the percussion intro and the outro; if you get a chance check out the album version for the full track. Also, have to echo others who suggest Toto's "Rosanna," which is off the same album.
I'll be over you by Toto is another great one. Toto members were all session artists that played on many other artists records. They decided to try it on their own... and was that every a great choice
Fun reaction. Excellent band of true musicians. All your fans already given great comments. You, dear Lady, made the song even better than The last time I heard it.
80s music is on a different level.....still
That's totally true... Love this song ❤❤❤
this track and ( a-ha - Take On Me)
The 80s is probably where pop and rock peaked. There was some good stuff in the early 90s, but things have been on decline since 1989.
For more early 80's feel good comfort music you need to try "Duran Duran". These Brits are smooth.
Radio Africa (by Latin Quarter) is also great, came out few years later -- definitely a one-hit wonder, but one of those really good 80's political songs. Are political pop chart songs even a thing anymore?
Another couple of great songs from Toto are "Rosanna and Hold the Line,"
"Hold the line" is awesome.
I’ll be over you and Pamela are great as well
What he said! I love Rosanna & Hold The Line!
hold the line is for me the best toto song
Hold the line in my opinion is the only song worth listening to of the three everyone mentions.
I wish I could go back to the 80's, good music and MTV.
Toto had several hit songs, particularly in the 1980s. Some of their most famous hits include:
And the soundtrack to the original Dune movie from 1984.
They had a few other bangers like "Stranger in Town" "Hydra", "Georgy Porgy". etc. They were one of the dominant bands from 1978 thru 1988.
Boston "More than a feeling" check it out...if you like Toto " Africa"..you'll love Boston " More than a feeling" :)
Need some Kansas too
Hold The Line! Toto's signature song, all over the airwaves. Africa and Rosanna put Toto on the map as well. Thank you for posting, Mia.🤘😎🤘
You can thank the late Jeff Porcaro for that beat. RIP Jeff, one of the GOAT drummers. Legend.
Africa is one of my all time favorite songs. Toto is very underrated in my oponion.
Toto was comprised of top notch, studio session players who played on thousands of other records and singles. This band had the best musicians in the musical world playing together. That’s why they’re so good.

This is definitely a feel good song
Toto began as a collection of highly regarded session musicians. They are super talented musicians and in heavy demand. They decided to do it for themselves and had great success.
Love this song! Great choice 😊
Surprised I haven’t seen more reactions for it … thanks for bringing it back 🤗
Toto is an outstanding band!! Mia, you look stunning too! 😍😘

I was at the dance club a few years ago. The DJ played this song and the entire place erupted. Everyone was singing it together.

Add. Members of Toto also worked with the late Donna Summer, Michael McDonald (I Keep Forgettin) and Chicago (Hard to Say I'm Sorry).
Best decade for music..hands down..the 80's
I think it hit #1 on the charts back in the early 80's. I always love Steve Lukather on guitar. "Feel good song" is a great call.

Kansas, Jethro Tull, BTO, Doobie Brothers, Steve Miller Band, Boz Scaggs
This official video version of "Africa" edited out the percussion intro and the outro; if you get a chance check out the album version for the full track. Also, have to echo others who suggest Toto's "Rosanna," which is off the same album.
Great song
Some other hits from ToTo are Rosanna and Hold the Line 😎
I was 2 when this song came out. The all-nighters, boozing, gambling, chicks...it was a wild time!
They are a great band! Check out “Hold The Line” and “Rosanna” next.
Rosanna is my favorite from Toto
I'll be over you by Toto is another great one.
Toto members were all session artists that played on many other artists records. They decided to try it on their own... and was that every a great choice
The Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin
Van Morrison - Into the Mystic
Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale
Steely Dan - Hey Nineteen
Fun reaction. Excellent band of true musicians. All your fans already given great comments. You, dear Lady, made the song even better than The last time I heard it.
A woman of your caliber deserves the man that you're requesting.
