      Probably a large round girl? But as far as periods... yeah, I imagine a lot of hopeful female blood cells carrying tons of nutrients, just hoping to see the egg get impregnated, but then... I wonder how does the brain even know when to release the different hormones? How does it even work to have a cycle like that?

    Having been one of the team originally working on Viagra (although at that time it was just referred to as sildenafil citrate), it was a little sad when the team was disbanded due to some unpleasant side effects when used for its original purpose. The compound was effectively killed off as an R&D project. About a year later, the team was pulled back together again as a few people on the clinical trials had asked to be able to keep taking it as they said it had saved their marriage! I spent the next 5 or 6 years working on this (was a team leader at this point), and wrote a large chunk of the analytical package for the FDA and MHRA filings. Was a great project to work on. Thanks, Dr Hope, for reminding me of that time. Every one thinks that was the biggest drug for Pfizer, but at the time I left, it was only the 6th biggest ( in terms of income).
    Oh yes, and I think we'd heard all the jokes long before it was approved for use😁

      I don't know why _either_ ought to be very career damaging. Opium was once sold openly in drugstores even though its addictive properties were known. Addiction was seen as a private medical problem. As for the rather disturbing porn... I'm more concerned that coercion was used to create the material than the material itself. So saying one is worse than another doesn't impress me. Oddly enough, the stigma against drug users was influenced by the west. Specifically, they looked at America in the 60s and 70s and were like "we're better than that" (my speculation is that drug users were associated with dissent) and it evolved to current attitudes. Their modern Whaling practices are came from America. In the Edo and Meiji period whaling was very rare and most whales eaten were those that washed up. After WWII, general Macarthur told Japan whaling was really good and it got a generation of schoolchildren to love whale meat. I could talk about the panties obsession, but that story is rather long.

    • @HaganeNoGijutsushi
      @HaganeNoGijutsushi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@alex_zetsu well, yes, obviously the problem with child porn is that it implies child rape. There is an ongoing discussion and a lot more variety in terms of laws when it comes to _drawn_ child porn - which doesn't involve any actual person - but that wouldn't be punished in Japan. We're talking actual pictures or movies, which imply children being exploited or raped. So obviously even being a "customer" for it means being accomplices more or less directly in its creation, or at least incentivizing it. Either way it's very different from doing drugs, which is a truly victimless crime - a personal choice which however potentially stupid harms no one but the user.

    • @slook7094
      @slook7094 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alex_zetsu You're just showing how ignorant you are. The Opium Wars started because the emperor saw opium addiction as a national public health crisis and banned it, which pissed off the British. So no, the West didn't invent drug addiction stigma. Singapore is even harsher on drugs and will execute you. Even in the west, addiction was never seen as a "private problem." It was an epidemic among civil war veterans, which is why morphine addiction was known as "the soldier's disease." That's why we had the temperance movement. In fact, it was seen as a feminist issue because men would become addicts and let their families starve.
      Yes, it used to be sold on store shelves, as was cocaine. It was sold in the form of patent medicine. Alcohol was also prescribed as medicine. It's not sold anymore because the Food and Drug Act outlawed patent medicines and made it so ingredients had to be published. People also used to sell other humans as slaves in the town square, does that make it okay?

    About that line at 1:34, I believe that is supposed to be a reference to how unhealthy this body is. We know that due to the smoking there is already a shortage of properly working, living red blood cells and the body's normal cells are already living on rationed oxygen. Since the amount of excess oxygen in the blood is already so low, diverting red blood cells to cause the erection will cause some regular cells to starve for oxygen and die.
    Which makes us really wonder just how unhealthy this guy must be to have that be true...

    Been watching your reviews of these, and enjoying the maturity and education that you add to it. This is a touch subject that can get giggles, but I think this show is handling how the way they present different issues to the human body very well. Honestly, I've been able to retain more information about microbiology through the lens of an anime than in actual biology class. It's presented in the form of something I'm actually interested in and will pay attention to. Being ADHD is rough that way.

    It’s not shown here, but I was initially confused by the scene in this episode when White Blood Cell 1196 shows our main Red Blood Cell to the epididymus, because it was my understanding that leukocytes need to be kept away from sperm. Sperm are different enough from other body cells that the leukocytes can identify them as foreign and attack them. The Sertoli cells are supposed to maintain a so-called blood-testis barrier so a man doesn’t develop antibodies to his own sperm. I was nervous about White Blood Cell being so close to the baby spermies!
    However, I just realized that the blood cells were only shown the nursery, before the spermatocytes have built their antigens. We -correctly afaik- don’t see blood cells even near the pool with the mature sperm that are ready to be ejaculated.
    Yay for Cells At Work accuracy!
