One of the things I always liked about this episode is that the transfused blood cells are dressed for cold weather. That says to me that they were from blood that had been kept in cold storage.
Or given it is Japan and the different way of speaking there is a chance the blood is from someone living say in Hokkaido where it is usually a lot colder than Tokyo.
It wasn't in this video, but in the episode, the blood cells mention how they were pulled from their host body and centrifuged (high speed spinning/separation), therefore, they would have been in cold storage ready for transfusion. It's also why we probably don't really get to see the transfused platelets and plasma that Dr. Hope mentions Also, as someone who's read the manga, let me tell you that this isn't the only time you'll be seeing these new blood cells :)
That story you told was the same for my mum when she gave birth to me. She took a lot of blood transfusions in order to survive and so she always tells me that we owe blood now. She can’t donate her blood due to certain issues, but I can. So I donate fairly often to make up for what was used to save her when I was born. And of course I don’t know the exact amount so I’ll just keep doing it, no reason to just meet the amount and then stop. Anyway good job gettin it done right before season 2 and black are going to air, and they’re going to be airing at the same time. Obviously you won’t be able to keep up with both as you’re busy and such, but I look forward to watching your videos on those too!
I'm also someone who, like your mum, cannot donate my whole blood, so I want to thank you, from the bottom of my _heart,_ (pun intended) for paying your blood forward, and helping to make up for those of us who will never be able to contribute as much as we need to take.
That's great. I don't donate blood but involved in phase 1 clinical trial (healthy volunteers) because you can only choose either one as the trial take amount of blood pretty much the same amount. But rather than one go, they jab us 3 times a day for however long the trial is 😅.

That's amazing! I'd love to donate blood, but I'm chronically anaemic (my doctor said that if we somehow managed to get it under control, then maybe I could, but it's not looking likely sadly).
I'm an universal donor too. But sadly, I don't fit the standar for donating blood T_T beacuse of my heigth and weight doesn't reach the minimum required in my country. But in here you are a donor unless you or your family said the opposite. So when I was 18 I decided to make sure anyone couldn't take away my right to donate and became a listed donor for organs in case of necesary. Also, I've make sure to tell everyone around me that I am a donor, is my right and I want it to be protected and respected. Hopefully someday i will be able to donate blood.

I've got to admit, this was a hard one to watch. My grandmother died this way. She received massive trauma during a bad car accident. The doctors at the hospital did their best, but she was losing blood faster than they could transfuse, and the damage was too bad to fix. My mother had to give the doctors permission to stop giving blood. I think it was probably the hardest thing my mom ever had to do.
I remember watching a video about secondary coagulation on Khan Academy once. The activation pathway was confusing as hell, and I remembered it for like only 5 minutes. Guess it's a good thing I'm not a medical school student...

One thing I love about the blood transfusion scene is that the new blood cells, on top of having different uniforms, also have a different accent from the native cells. It represents how the body they come from is a different region where these cells grew independently of the ones we've come to know and love in the show, thus they have a different accent. Another thing it could represent is that, in Japan, there's a belief that blood type impacts your personality. Them having different uniforms means they're a different but compatible blood type, so supposedly a different personality?
Finally, 2020 has completed. Fun fact: Around 18:08, the new RBC came from outer world, is speaking north-east accents in Japanese. If UK dubs exists, original cells speaking standard Rondon speakings, and the newcomers may speaking Scottish or Irish.
In the English dub, they all started to speak in Southern accents while Cherry (red blood cell) was talking in her usual neutral American accent. Loved the distinction!
About a year ago, I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Over the next six months, I did five rounds of chemotherapy, each one requiring me to receive several blood and platelet transfusions as my bone marrow rebuilt itself. I've now been cancer-free for almost half a year, and I am eternally grateful to the people who donated the blood and platelets that kept me going through my treatment. To all the blood donors out there, thank you. I kind of wonder how a show like Cells at Work! would depict the kind of leukemia I had.

I really, really hope that this series will be accepted in schools as learning material. Honestly, as student, it was a pain for me to learn, how the body protects itself and I wish I had this anime to learn from 😭😅 It‘s just beautiful and now I can really say, that I can understand better, how our body works... Even so, I am still confusing veines and arteries 🤣
Maybe we should appreciate the work our body does every single second more? This might anthropomorphise how the whole thing works, but that doesn't make it less accurate in the technical aspect.
This... Somehow surprised me in that it makes so much more sense now that I was SO COLD after I had my son. I had a postpartum hemorrhage where I lost enough blood where I was juuuuuuuuuust on the precipice of needing a transfusion but not quite. And I kept needing more and more warm blankets cause I just couldn't get warm
@@Gappasaurus that one, it's really ep 13 because the hemorrhage is ep12 divided into 2 parts (but it's considered ep12 because most animes only have 12 ep per year)
I've tried actually watching this anime for myself, but without the running commentary from this channel it just isn't the same. So here's to covering season 2 :-)
In elementary and middle school, it was a treat to watch “Bill Nye the science guy” and “magic school bus” in science class after a big test or just before a school break. I can definitely see this series being used for the same thing. I know if this series had come out when I took biology classes that I would have been more excited to learn about it.
Can't help but notice that he looks quite a bit more tired than in the last episode. Being a doctor in a pandemic must be reallhy exhausting. I really do appreciate that he found the time to complete this reaction series.
The most inspiring part about this episode for me is at the end, when that little red blood cell we've been following for the entire series shows uncharacteristic resolve, saying that while there's only so much she can do, as the world itself literally dies around her, she'll continue to do her job until she's no longer able. I've tried to adopt the same ethic. Not just death, she stared the apocalypse in the eye, and she didn't blink.
OMG! That happenes to me! After I gave birth to my second child I lost a looot of blood. I received 3 blood bags. Sadly I can't donate because I'm underweight but my husband and friends did it for me. Thanks to all the donators out there!!
Thanks for the video! I think during the pandemic Cells at Work, especially these last two episodes, make us *ordinary people* appreciate all the front-line workers out there even more, cause this is basically how they feel I imagine. The world is going through an enormous shock right now, just like the body in the series, and if not for all the front-line workers I can't imagine how bad it would've been for society. A large part of the 1st season’s plot revolves around the creation of a medicine so that would be great, the main character talks about how the medicine works and its effects, so I’m looking forward to that.
Well done! Honestly, watching your analysis of this series helped me learn a lot about immunology. And knowing at least something about it helped a lot when Covid struck. I didn't feel quite so ignorant and helpless. You're a great doctor and a superb teacher, and if hospital work ever stops being an option for you I encourage you to strongly consider a classroom.
I had a blood transfusion i had a bad allergic reaction to the drug humira and my body crashed. My immune system was low, I was always so cold pale not getting enough oxygen or energy to my body and when i got the blood transfusion i felt warm and reenergized so i can validate this scene

Experience and a passionate heart! Can't agree more!! I've given up my way to entering the health care industry mainly because I realized I do not have enough passion toward this occupation. Health care, as my opinion, is a job that you have to be extremely passionate to be able to handle. It's super stressful, even just as a student. I'm more of a language person, so I transferred my way to medical translation and interpretation. I can still put what I've learned in use and hopefully still participate a little bit to the lifesaving 🙂 Time to renew my first aid certificate 💪🏻

The Black spin-off is so good too. It goes to greatly effective lenghts at portraying an unhealthy lifestyle's body, and does so in a way that makes viewers go "wait is this what's happening in my body just for doing this one unhealthy thing? ...I should stop". Even with full awareness of it being just a metaphor, it's just that damn effective at portraying the effects of bad life habits. a true goldmine. Also, fun fact! The blood transfer in this episode actually came from the body featured in Black! You'll notice right away that the uniforms are the same.

Imagine the first time this body has alcohol, and all the transfused cells either break down sobbing or be like "ah shit, here we go again" Various portents of doom, the cells insisting that it's all downhill from there, etc. And getting dumped into a snowdrift seems like it would be pretty traumatizing too, ya feel?
17:26 It seems like, among blood types, O- is one of if not THE most in-demand for this exact reason. Plus, if memory serves, it's not an especially common blood type as a percentage of the population. My sister is O-, and when she was donating her blood she had people calling her and asking for donations A LOT. I'm not sure about myself, but I THINK I'm O+ (which is more common and less in-demand), and I haven't actually given blood myself. I have major respect for anyone who does so, but I have a medical condition which affects my circulation and makes it important to keep my plasma volume up, so I'm a bit wary about doing so.

I dont know the reason but this episode always get me tear up for no reason. Mind you I never encounter any trauma or whatsoever. Only that my mom have complications from her pregnancy which transfer her to ICU and she need to transfuse 12 litter of red blood cell and 1 litter of white blood cell. But both my mom and the baby is healthy now 😊
9:58 Honestly, it's pretty ambiguous whether this is depicting the CNS or the autonomic (in this case sympathetic) nerves themselves, but I suppose it's a bit of a moot point since it's all part of the same process. The brain makes the decision and gives the orders, and the autonomic nerves (in this case sympathetic nerves) carry them out and actually regulate the breathing, circulation, etc.

I really, really hope that this series will be accepted in schools as learning material. Honestly, as student, it was a pain for me to learn, how the body protects itself and I wish I had this anime to learn from 😭😅

I got a blood transfusion yesterday and I made my mom watch this episode this morning with me and we both cried since I almost went into shock :(
Maybe we should appreciate the work our body does every single second more? This might anthropomorphise how the whole thing works, but that doesn't make it less accurate in the technical aspect.

This... Somehow surprised me in that it makes so much more sense now that I was SO COLD after I had my son. I had a postpartum hemorrhage where I lost enough blood where I was juuuuuuuuuust on the precipice of needing a transfusion but not quite. And I kept needing more and more warm blankets cause I just couldn't get warm

In elementary and middle school, it was a treat to watch “Bill Nye the science guy” and “magic school bus” in science class after a big test or just before a school break. I can definitely see this series being used for the same thing. I know if this series had come out when I took biology classes that I would have been more excited to learn about it.

The most inspiring part about this episode for me is at the end, when that little red blood cell we've been following for the entire series shows uncharacteristic resolve, saying that while there's only so much she can do, as the world itself literally dies around her, she'll continue to do her job until she's no longer able.
I've tried to adopt the same ethic. Not just death, she stared the apocalypse in the eye, and she didn't blink.
OMG! That happenes to me! After I gave birth to my second child I lost a looot of blood. I received 3 blood bags.
Sadly I can't donate because I'm underweight but my husband and friends did it for me.

Thanks for the video! I think during the pandemic Cells at Work, especially these last two episodes, make us *ordinary people* appreciate all the front-line workers out there even more, cause this is basically how they feel I imagine. The world is going through an enormous shock right now, just like the body in the series, and if not for all the front-line workers I can't imagine how bad it would've been for society. I don't know if it's censored or if the AI just couldn't understand what he said?
The word ABO written in lower case is a pejorative term used to refer to an Australian Aboriginal person, so I think that's why it's censored.
I can think of one other apart from @Green Wren's reason, but I don't think it's a serious enough thing to warrant a censor from Auto Subtitle.

A large part of the 1st season’s plot revolves around the creation of a medicine so that would be great, the main character talks about how the medicine works and its effects, so I’m looking forward to that.
Another UK doctor has made some Dr. Stone reactions videos, you could search it up - maybe Dr. Hope could try making a season review about it.

Well done! Honestly, watching your analysis of this series helped me learn a lot about immunology. And knowing at least something about it helped a lot when Covid struck. I didn't feel quite so ignorant and helpless. You're a great doctor and a superb teacher, and if hospital work ever stops being an option for you I encourage you to strongly consider a classroom.
I had a blood transfusion i had a bad allergic reaction to the drug humira and my body crashed. My immune system was low, I was always so cold pale not getting enough oxygen or energy to my body and when i got the blood transfusion i felt warm and reenergized so i can validate this scene

I've given up my way to entering the health care industry mainly because I realized I do not have enough passion toward this occupation. Health care, as my opinion, is a job that you have to be extremely passionate to be able to handle. It's super stressful, even just as a student.
I'm more of a language person, so I transferred my way to medical translation and interpretation. I can still put what I've learned in use and hopefully still participate a little bit to the lifesaving 🙂

In the English dub, the transfused red blood cells have strong Texan accents.
That’s because in this Japanese dub, they had strong accents from the Japanese countryside. Even a non-Japanese person might be able to slightly hear the accent difference if you listen for it.
In the german dub the transfused blood cells are speaking in swiss-german, which is VERY distinct. :D

It goes to greatly effective lenghts at portraying an unhealthy lifestyle's body, and does so in a way that makes viewers go "wait is this what's happening in my body just for doing this one unhealthy thing? ...I should stop".
Even with full awareness of it being just a metaphor, it's just that damn effective at portraying the effects of bad life habits. a true goldmine.
Also, fun fact! The blood transfer in this episode actually came from the body featured in Black! You'll notice right away that the uniforms are the same.

Plus, if memory serves, it's not an especially common blood type as a percentage of the population. My sister is O-, and when she was donating her blood she had people calling her and asking for donations A LOT.
I'm not sure about myself, but I THINK I'm O+ (which is more common and less in-demand), and I haven't actually given blood myself. I have major respect for anyone who does so, but I have a medical condition which affects my circulation and makes it important to keep my plasma volume up, so I'm a bit wary about doing so.

I dont know the reason but this episode always get me tear up for no reason. Mind you I never encounter any trauma or whatsoever. Only that my mom have complications from her pregnancy which transfer her to ICU and she need to transfuse 12 litter of red blood cell and 1 litter of white blood cell. But both my mom and the baby is healthy now 😊

The brain makes the decision and gives the orders, and the autonomic nerves (in this case sympathetic nerves) carry them out and actually regulate the breathing, circulation, etc.
