I thought my eyes betrayed me but no it's real. I feared the series would never continue but you always deliver when I'm close to giving up hope. *sigh* Guess it's time to re-watch all of the cells at work videos again for the seventh time. CURSE you and your amazing quality content. Anyway love all the content you provide.

I think the "Delirium" part is talking about the cell characters themselves, not the actual human this story is taking place in. I haven't watched this show in a while but if my memory serves me right each episode's name follows the pattern "X, Y and Z" with X and Y being the anatomical/physiological/medical topics the episode covers and Z is related to the characters (the cells) themselves and what they're going through.

An alternate translation of the original Japanese title is "Overwork, Hair Loss, CONFUSION," thus perhaps referring to the immune systems' confusion over what are and are not friendly cells. Love these BTW, Doc! Glad to see a Cells at Work reaction video again!

  • @kaworunagisa4009

The last part of the ep title (錯乱) can be translated as _confusion, distraction, derangement_ and I'm pretty sure that in this case it means the cells being confused. So Delirium is just inaccurate translation.

THIS episode hits me a little bit closer to home. Ever had GBS (Guillain-Barre Syndrome)? I did, over 4 years ago and BOTH of my hands and feet were rendered useless due to my own immune system attacking my own nerve cells.
I recovered by now mostly, but the effects still lingers on my right side (hand and leg).
    I'm right-handed too...

I would say stress is absolutely the cause for me. I lost the majority of my hair as a young teenager, to this day I still have very little hair. The only real cause anyone could tell for it was the stress I was under. I very much doubt if it will ever completely grow back.
It makes me sad to watch this and think of my poor hair matrix cells and my overworked T cells. 😭
I went to an all girls school so it wasn't easy, my parents tried everything to help but nothing worked. I went through multiple sessions where a specialist would inject small amounts of steroids directly into my scalp, the hope was that at every injection site the steroids would allow the hair in that one area to grow back. I had hundreds of small injections all over my head. It helped some hair grow for a bit but it didn't last long until my hair fell out again and it didn't work at all when we tried a second time. Eventually I just gave up and resigned myself to having a patchy, mostly bald head. I tried wigs for a time but they were mostly annoying so I've settled for wearing headscarves.
Then I get the occasional person randomly approaching me and asking if I have cancer.

It's great that the metaphor for being inflamed works both in Japanese and English because the Japanese word for inflammation (炎症) is literally made up of the kanji for flame+disease. The same kanji for flame is also used in a lot of other diseases that involve inflammation like bronchitis (気管支炎) and pneumonia (肺炎).

    • @seiya-chon
      @seiya-chon 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Ggastritis in Japanese also combines the kanjis for "stomach" and "flame"

    Hi Ed,
I've only found your work recently (I was talking about Cells at Work with a friend and while they didn't say which one, they said that a doctor was really enjoying the accuracies of the show).
Unfortunately, on June 9th, Billy Kametz, the English voice of neutrophil 1146, passed away of cancer at the age of 35. My other half and I found out just before watching the last episodes of season 2 and I don't want to explain why, but knowing the details about it really changed the ending of the show for us. I thought I would share this to say that you might get bombarded with similar comments in the future and give you the choice to decide how you manage this information.
    Best wishes and keep safe.

There's another show I hope Dr. Hope reacts to which is Healer Girl, especially episode 9. The show is about a new form of medicine by singing and it's used with conventional medicine. It's a bit fantastical in that regard but the characters feels like they are like any medical students and episode 9 in particular is about a surgery and the way disease is visualized is very interesting.

Excuse me Dr. Hope, Sir, I'm a huge fan of your channel, but is it possible for your reaction videos to return to the original japanese version of the anime with english subtitles? I think a lot of us anime fans prefer it that way because there are so many things (such as nuances, cultural things etc) that are lost when an anime is dubbed into other language.

I think in addition to being a commentary on healthcare, it could be a commentary on Japanese work culture in general, which is notoriously high stress with a lot of adverse effects as a result of that, such as high suicide rates. I imagine that's something that is more relatable to your average reader than healthcare, though obviously there are going to be healthcare workers who read this like you.

Yes everyone is based of off real people and how they acted and what they said was based on the real medical staff they are protraying.
