“Has Nikon fooled us all?” A classic click bait title. A better question would be “did all the shit TH-cam influencers dump on Nikon for the last few years fool us all”? No is the answer for most Nikon users. Influencers focussed on Autofocus tracking and decided that was the most important feature and the decided the Nikon Z6/7 were not good enough. For 8 years many Nikon cameras have had iso 64 as their base and highlight metering as a feature. These two settings are brilliant for shooting sunsets, brides dresses and all number of high contrast scenes, yet it’s hard to find an Influencer who even mentions them. With Nikon adopting XQD cards over a decade ago and hence CFexpress, they chose the fastest technology rather than sticking with safe card choices of the other manufacturers. I have had no regrets since changing from my 35mm Canon film camera to Nikon digital cameras and I don’t feel fooled at all.

It was the losses that Nikon were incurring according to their own figures that caused the negativity about Nikon, or more specifically, about Nikon's future. So people can call it " dumping" on them, but the concerns were justified. Its good they haven't gone under, they've always made good gear and the more competition the better in the market.

Gotta do a nice title like that from time to time :D
In the end it all depends what we shoot. For birds when I tried the Z7 II it was lacking a bit compared to others, but not a bad camera in itself. Just in direct comparison it lacked a bit. For other use cases it was very good.
I think definitely now all brands deliver us cameras of super high standard

I am curious to see your opinion (after testing in the field) about the R3. I have that little concern about the 24 Mpix. For this reason I think you might want to buy the RF 600 with probably the teleconverter. The 800 / 1200 versions are too expensive.... Now I hope Canon will decrease the price of those "big" lenses too or create more variety of lenses (more affordable for normal people)

Jan, re the pre release capture on the Z9. The images are jpg, but if you have the camera set to RAW only and change to 30fps, it works and automatically records the jpg images. You don't need to be shooting RAW + jpg, or need to swap to jpg. Now, if they implemented it at 20fps and produced RAW files, that would be awesome!!

I had the same dilemma - R5 or R3. I went with the R3 as I have been a 1D series shooter for many years so I like the format and I also shoot sport / action as well as wildlife. However, for birds you really need to have long lenses!

    • @frstesiste7670
      @frstesiste7670 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Different forms of "pre capture" buffering have been available in different forms and with increasing speed and capabilities almost since digital took over 15+ years ago. I don't recall when I first saw it, but think Fujifilm was fairly early. Today you'll find "Pro Capture" in most recent Olympus bodies, "Pre-Shot" in Fujifilm etc. It's of course impossible to use with a dSLR in OVF-mode so it didn't become usual in interchangeable lens cameras until mirrorless took off.
It also requires a fairly large buffer and fast frames per second to be really useful. Guess that's why it's become more popular the last couple of years.

    • @terrywbreedlove

Olympus has been doing it for about 6 years I think. They call it Pro Capture and birders seem to love it.

No, Nikon did not fool us all.. only the people that haven't been around the industry long enough to know what Nikon does and how the game goes... I would smh and laugh every time I saw a post or comment or video of people saying things like Nikons dead, nikons a sinking ship, nikon is out of the game etc... or when I'd see posts of people getting into photography and would ask in groups what system they should get into. And so many people would say "whatever you do, definitely don't go Nikon, they are about to fold and go under and are years behind the competition"
Ive been photographing for 33 yrs and 31 of those years with Nikon. Nikon doesn't mess around and always pull through with the good stuff and provide the high end glass to accompany it. They've done time and time again over the years.

Appreciate your comment, my title was obviously a tad click baity, but it's nice to have a discussion sometimes. Nikon did very well with DSLRs and then it took them a while to catch on in the mirrorless game, where they finally showed up to the party with the Z9. I used the Z6 & 7 II for a bit and while decent, they were definitely lacking when it came to tracking

On that lense, 1/2000 should be plenty to consistently get sharp shots and will even freeze some movement in the subject. I'd probably do a controlled test on a still object with the camera on a tripod or sitting on a table, and use the self timer to trigger the shot, the idea being to make sure there's not a fault somewhere in the gear. If it's birds in flight where your images are soft, be at least 1/ 3200 if you can, that will increase your chances of freezing the action properly. But you're still going to get some soft ones regardless.

The R7 has been rumored to be just around the corner too often, just like the Sony pro aps-c (a6900/a7000, or whatever name people came up with for it). As long as they keep people waiting, they might just convince some impatient people to take the step up to the R5/A9, and with the chip shortage limiting the amount of cameras that can be produced overal I guess they will keep on putting their chips in the cameras that have the biggest margins.

I just saw an interview with the founder of canonrumors, who has now left it. And he said he's certain that there will be an R7, and that it's going to be a crop sensor professional camera aimed at sports & wildlife (my interpretation is that it's going to be an RF replacement for the 7D2). He also said, however, that due to supply problems it isn't going to come anytime soon - probably not even this year. Releasing a major camera and not be able to deliver it to the customers is not something they want. So they'll no doubt wait and not announce it until they feel sure they can deliver. They might release some more affordable cameras and lenses just to keep the brand alive. In the meantime Canon will of course pay attention to what the competitors are doing, and this of course might influence their plans.

A R7 APS-C camera could do it better (for AF), but I still couldn't afford a EF 600mm. A R7 could use the new (and slow) 600 and 800mm RF lenses which I could afford - making it even more interesting. No RF to MFT adapter is physically possible unfortunately.

If you shoot aps-c from any full frame manufacturer you have a much more reliable af system with a native 600mm (900mm ff equivalent) focal length available. Don’t forget tamron and sigma 150-600 options. Just pointing out that for most practical purposes, avoiding adapting other mounts, aps-c actually has more reach than mft. I expect the new higher res aps-c sensors to widen the gap even further.

Where Nikon is clearly head and shoulders above Canon these days are long lenses for serious shooters. The 120-300mm f2.8, new 400mm f2.8 TC, 500mm f5.6 PF or 800mm f6.3 PF are essential lenses that I personally wouldn't want not to have the option to purchase.

It also feels as though Nikon is beginning to really listen to it's users. I downloaded Nikon Firmware 2.0 for the Z9 early this morning and I'll hit the field today and let you know for sure, but pre-capture / post capture works with only 30fps/120fps (and those are both jpg), once you set the frame rate to be 30/120 you're automatically shooting jpgs even if you are in one of the "RAW" settings (LLC, HE*, HE) as your base. DX camera's of Canon could perhaps die out.. , Nikon had done something with the z50/Zfc , some lenses , but all the "focus" seems to be on Fullframe
I would like a DX format with z9 features ... just as they did with the D850 + D500...For those who can not afford the z9 , do want speed, smaller file sizes , reliableness , superb AF, and : REACH !!!
Buget wise it is not just a camera , you also need a lens ... It would be perfect if this Z500 ( what ever the name may be) + the Z 200-600 in combination is not far above the price of a Z9 body
Just like the D500 + 200-500 , this combination wil be a best seller...
And for the people with some more to spent , a Z500mm f5.0... that is the wish of a lot of photographers in our group..
Not the "ghost" on the lens roadmap that seems to be a 400mm f4.0 .. we all think it is useless , it needs a tc for 99% of the time.

Then they do want travel lightweight , the D500 without the grip also have 10fps and combined with a 500PF/ Sigma 100-400 it is still in service..
The z6ii , z50 is not their choise , the AF system can not compete according to their findings
So if this DX highend model is coming , they hope it is without a build in grip.. a bit more bulky then a z6 , and if wisched a external grip could be placed as a option.

  • @friartist
    @friartist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

So, my take on "24 MP is enough" is: sorry not for tiny birds. They never fill the image and if they did they would be impossible to follow anyway. Cropping is the way to go. More pixels are a huge advantage, but the magnification factor is only the square root of the megapixel increase, so I crop for bird identification purposes from 47 MP or 8256 pixels to 1661 pixels horizontally = a factor ~5 or with my lightweight 500mm f5.6 "PF" lens w. TC 1.4 from 700mm cropped to 3500mm. It is enough to ID the bird and not enough for posting online LOL That said the z9 has a 1:1 pixel 4K video readout that gives a factor 700mm x 2.3 = 1610mm f8. The quality is then obviously lower than the oversampled 4K video modes, But a nice gift to birders. And of course the tiny birds will be near impossible to find with 1610mm. Perhaps a red dot sight would help? Anybody out there tried that?

    Hi Jan,
I own and use the R3 since december in addition to my R5‘s and like the ergonomics over the R5. A little downside is the smart controller in vertical position, it isn‘t really accessible for my thumb. The image.quality is imho in high iso (3200 and above) including resolution and color better than R5 and A1. In low ISO I miss the resolution of the R5. Therefore the R3 is not for all situations.
Concerning your lens order I guess., it‘s the RF600F4L because of versatility and quality with extenders. I think you will not pay several thousands of $$$$ for less versatility and incorporated extender.

Nikon didn’t fool anyone. Anyone who has seen the industry in the last 20 years+ knows these companies leap frog each other every half decade or so. Canon was the first with FF DSLR. People thought Nikon was sleeping. Then the D3. Sony lost money for 10 years straight after acquiring K-M, throwing various types of pasta at the wall to see what would stick. That’s why no one took them seriously. It took Sony 3 tries (a7III) before people took them seriously for professional work. The original Z’s are fantastic cameras. But the influencers didn’t know them. And it takes more than a day or week or month or a sponsored event, to really know the cameras. People who know weren’t fooled. People who are new or with short attention spans got educated.

The minute I picked R3 up I liked its body and controls right away. Its controls and customization is the best among three IMO. And, AF tracking performance and accuracy is also the best (slightly better than A1; Z9 is way behind even after updated with firmware 2.0). The only major downside of R3 is its 24mp sensor. But coupling with RF 600/4, it works flawlessly with or without RF TCs. You would find yourself liking R3 the most like me even it only possesses 24mp.

Many of these negative comments about the demise of Nikon came from TH-cam shills not working photographers who have been around for many years.

Nikon has Fooled a lot of People into thinking the D850 is a Good Camera, while in reality it is a Piece of Shit

I disagree, love my D850! I’m not at all impressed with the Z9, could they get the viewfinder any smaller😂

What features of the D850 are shit exactly? It is widely regarded as one of the best DSLR ever made, so I am curious about your expertise with it

As I posted elsewhere on youtube...
My D850 is the Worst Camera I have ever had. It has Never taken an in focus Image regardless of Lens, AF Mode/Settings, AF Tuning, Shutter Speed or f-stop. There is a lot of Noise at any ISO above 100, and even at 64 the shadows are very noisy, even when dark. It also produces Halos and Mosquitos even at the Default settings in Picture Control. Battery life is Horrendous, it has never gotten more than 280 shots on a charge(3 different Batteries), and that is with all Wireless turned off, Airplane Mode on, Image Preview Off, Display timer at 4 seconds, and no viewing of Images on screen after taking. It also produces clusters of Horizontal Lines in the pics, across vertical lines. It has been to Nikon twice, they claim it is within Factory Tolerances. Those Tolerances must be loose enough to drive 3 or 4 Semis thru, side by side. The last time they looked at they said they cleaned the sensor, well every pic taken since its return has a big blotch on the screen in lower Right Corner. The D850 is a Complete Piece of Shit and not backed by Nikon.

@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 You obviously have a bad copy. I have a D5600, which I bought used and I take over 400 shots before switching batteries. But that's does not mean the D850 model is bad. For example, a friend of mine bought a Canon T7 and it had some issues as well, but I won't say Canon is shit
