Sometimes I wish people will not just judge how good a camera is by only how fast and accurate the eye focus is. Yes, it's important but there's a lot more to a great camera than just nailing the eye. I remember shooting with film cameras and manual lenses. I learnt a lot more about how to shoot back then. A camera is way more than auto-focus.

Thanks for a straight up review. I'm a Nikon shooter and just got my Z 9 and also own a Z 6 II and Z 7 II. I really like all three cameras, but the Z 9 is so much more advanced than the other two and the autofocus is off the chain. The Z9 will be my primary camera with the Z 7 II being me secondary shooter and the Z 6 II being for mainly video and as a backup to the primary and secondary.

I'm waiting for the R5 to come back in stock so that I can pair it with my RP which is honestly enough camera for 90% of what I do, especially when shooting with controlled portrait lighting. Eventually I'll probably add the R3 or something equivalent but I'm not in a hurry.

Don't forget lens choice, which is also a big factor. A few years ago lots of photographers were switching from Nikon and Canon to Sony. @9:09 In regards of the eye control focusing for the R3. I'm speaking this as a glasses wearer, and a month using the R3. I feel like the eye control focusing works like 80% of the time. Like, I REALLY need to be accurate on how I place my eye to the EVF. If I'm off by a millimeter, the focusing point won't move where I want it to be. Also, I sweat pretty badly when the assignment gets more intense. That if I get sweat on my glasses. My eye control focusing doesn't work properly.
added: Forgot to add. maybe I really have to keep on calibrating my eye control focusing at every new space I get myself into during the weddings.

So, like you I've been shooting with Sony mostly but also added Canon R5. Never shot Nikon with a DSLR or mirrorless only because once you picked a brand why switch. Had several Nikon film cameras including a F4. Well for reasons I find difficult to explain I decided to pre-order a Z9 and after 4 months one shipped to me. I thought it would be a longer wait since I am not an NPS member. Well I know have a Z9 in my hands and waiting for the lens to show up. I've always shot with a grip and have one on my R5 and A1. I might have considered a R3 but really wanted the higher megapixels and still have an A9 II so I didn't go with an R3. I don't shoot video so I didn't see what the R3 offered over an A9II. So the size doesn't bother me but it is a mountain to climb to understand setting up an Z9 for sure. Will see ofter a month if I keep it or stay with Sony/Canon. On all cameras having a area-swiss plate for tripod mounting screws with the vertical grip for sure. Don't know how they will ever fix that issue. Just have to take it off when doing portrait work.

  • @mverick160
    @mverick160 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I agree SD are easier and cheaper. But they are slow. So I prefer the CF Express even though they're expensive. I don't worry much about the price of CF Express when I have $12,000 worth of camera and lens in my hand. R5 is $3800, Battery grip is $350, Ef to RF adapter with Variable ND is $400, ef 70-200 $2100, RRS L bracket $220. 1tb Angelbird CF express $600, 1tb SD card UHS II 128gb $150 for a total plus tax of $7620 plus tax. The $12,000 is if my 200 F2 is on it. I want the speed of the CF Express.
The 120FPS on the Nikon is Jpeg and the hit rate on focus while moving fast isn't very good on the Nikon. I much prefer Raw. Can you work with Jpeg, yes. I never do unless it's travel stuff.
I will say, I think the R5 is a better option for most then the R3. I want the extra MP. Heck I want the High MP R5 to be released and the R5 will go to spare and video with a Atomos V+ for most of its life.
And I think the z9 is a better camera then the R3. Is it better then a R5? Not for me. I also use the battery grip on the R5. And the EF to RF adapter with a variable ND filter in it. Which is awesome keeping me out of HSS and allowing me full power from my flashes. And no shot limits on Godox anymore if you aren't in HSS. It also fits ALL EF glass. Since it's behind the lens. Makes me NOT want RF glass.
I am glad Nikon is back up to speed. The Z9 is an amazing camera. They also just released a firmware update.
One thing we should remember. The 1dx lines were for photojournalists. Not portrait photographers or really wedding photographers. The point of it was to get the shot no matter what at olympic events and in war zones. So lower resolution was OK. For portraits and wedding to be able to enlarge you didn't go for a 1dx. Some of these now are changing modes. The Z9 with 45.7mp and the A1 with 50.1mp are both not what a 1dx style camera was about so they've really had to upgrade processing for speed of the camera. That's why the 120fps on the z9 is amazing. You get the shot in a photojournalist style in seconds. If the tracking is working great you point and fire and don't make a spectacle doing it. Less chance to be seen by a enemy as documenting a event they don't want documented. And still can get a 50mp image for portraiture.
These cameras really introduce that High MP portrait full frames at the 120mp can be produced because with the processing power they're pushing to run 120fps they can easily slow down and process 5fps for 120mp. Come on Canon and release a monster 5DS R replacement.

If im shooting an R3 for sports, I'll have an R6 for a backup body, or something smaller for family outings, that offers most of the goodies at a far lower price.

hi Mr. Ortiz and Mr. Watson lol, My first DSLR was a Nikon D80, so I am happy that Nikon has finally gotten close the Sony and Canon with there focusing, but I will never buy a dual grip camera. and I am totally comfortable doing portraits with a single grip, but I might consider a Nikon again when they come out with all this new tec in a small camera like a Z8, but I am still unhappy with how big and heavy the new Nikon glass is, as of now I still am using the A7r lll. and I have no need to upgrade for what I use it for. but if I was to upgrade I would want an A1, but I am hoping that Sony comes out with the moving the focus point with the eye feature that the canon R3 has. thats a cool feature, but personally I think the R3's 20mp is not enough for a camera in 2022. but the Canon R5 is a nice camera, but there 50 and 85 L is also to big and heavy, Sony seems to get that size matters, and have been keeping there lenses smaller than Nikon and Canon. I think the bigger lens mounts of the Nikon and Canon go against them when trying to design smaller glass. the back of the lens that connects to the mount has to be bigger around then a Sony lens. but I still think Nikon and Canon could make smaller glass if they set out to do it. but for some reason they are in a different mind set. and that would be ok if there glass was better then Sony's, but with all there talk about there bigger lens mounts there glass is not better then Sony's. and Sigma got this when they redesigned the Sigma 85 art, and made it half the size and weight of the original. and the fact that Nikon and Canon don't make it easy for 3rd part glass makers to make lenses for there cameras, is a big advantage for Sony, I think the Sony A74 33mp is a great sweet spot. but I am used to 42mp now. but with that said I was content with 12mp not to many years ago.

I just got the Z9 for wedding work and NEVER thought I’d shoot 45 MP at events. However, if the IQ is still there and I take no hit to my workflow and storage space by shooting the HE mode, might as well take the resolution. Plus, going into crop mode is a nice feature for reach and still maintaining plenty of resolution. Hope you get one for review soon.

You mean weight is the most important thing, try to hand hold your sony with bigger lens and you will see. Secondly, as someone who has been into computers for like 30 years. The worst enemy for any electronic chip is heat. That is why you have all type of coolers, there is a whole industry on cooling chips. So by any means, I prefer a bigger camera that never overheats, rather than smaller one that overheats or even just heat up to the touch. With mirror less now where the image sensor is nearly always on, I think prolong heat will degrade image and processing sensor in time.

The reality is that if you are already invested in a system (Sony, Canon, or Nikon) then none of the others are "better enough" to move you over. If you are not invested in any system currently then all of these top of the line, professional level, cameras are probably overkill and not worth comparing anyways.

It's true, the biggest difference between these flagship cameras (yes, the R3 is Canon's flagship until the R1 comes out) is personal preference. How many different shift lenses are available for a Sony? How many native?
Sony is definitely not the leader in lens options. Canon and Nikon have a ton more options.
For what this and all top line cameras have always been designed for. The z9 actually beats everybody just with that 120fps. The top line has always been for photojournalists. Getting the shot no matter what. In the 120fps mode you just aim and fire and stop. You'll get a shot to upload to a news agency. Even if half miss focus you have 120 frames to chose from.
Canon and Sony can't do that at all. And that is a big loss for them both. But I'm sure you'll see it in the next round and for Canon on the R1. Also the z9 is built like a tank which to a photojournalist is very important. Have you ever seen the lenses and cameras of the old newpaper guys? They were beat to hell. But still got the shot. The A1 is solid but nothing compared to the z9. The R3 is not the R1 so I really don't expect that kind of durability from it.

      Paparazzi would love it.
Many pro journalist shooters would love it.
You didn't answer the question. How many Tilt/shift lenses has Sony made? I'll answer for you. Zero. In fact their's only 1 E mount. And it's crappy.
If we're going on what can be adapted to mount. Well gee. Theirs an adapter to fit my Bronica GS lenses on my Canon too. So I guess "Adapted" they all have a ton. But they sure don't have any that are native mount or Sony made. So you'll have something that's rigged up. No thanks.
Your post is a simple bash with nothing of knowledge of pro cameras. Nice try, maybe if you'd actually used any of these for the last 40 years you'd understand more about what the z9 was designed for.
This seems to be the problem. Everyone thinks the new camera released should be EVERYTHING. Yea, it don't work that way. They have a line with different models for different photographers. Read that again and do some research on that. Maybe you'll understand.
Drop your A1 on the ground from 5 feet and drop a Z9. The A1 will be in pieces. The Z9 is a pro workhorse. Sony hasn't figured that out yet and that's why the A1 is small and made of mostly plastic.
Theirs a reason the Z9 is a porky pig. It's made out of Magnesium. The A1 is built of mostly plastic. You can bet the R1 will be built of a metal also. Because when you have to have a camera that works in any environment under extreme situations. You don't build it out of plastic. And the weather sealing has to be great. Which I'm sure the Z9 is. The A1 with it being mostly plastic I wouldn't bet on.
The reason I know the R3 wasn't the R1 and Canon changed the name to the R3 when they saw the R1 is it isn't made of Metal for more durability. Pretty simple.
For me, I don't want a Z9, R1, A1 or R3. My useage is of the 5DS R range. I have a R5 and it's awesome but when they come out with a High MP I'll be buying it and the R5 will be a backup and used for video with an Atomos V+. Because those 2 fit the lineup I'm in.

I would not switch now - Nikon has the most future proof mount and they are now bringing out awesome budget lesnses. The 40mm f/2 is a case in point - it smokes anything from Canon or Sony at that price point. It is super sharp in the center and displays no focus breathing unlike, for example, the 50mm 1.8 for RF that has terrible focus breathing.
As lens design gets more sophisticated and experimental the Z mount will continue to shine brighter and brighter. The Sony E mount may run into problems as we already know they have some hard physical limitations - the result of using and APS-C mount for a full frame sensor. They are getting away with it now (mostly - they do have lots of focus breathing problems on their high end lenses like 50mm 1.2 for example), but the more the industry pushes lens design the more problems they will run into.
Nikon now has, or has announced, every focal length that 99.9% of photographers could ever want or need, and for the few (like tilt shift lenses) that they have not announced, you can perfectly adapt from F mount.
Leaving Nikon now is silly - may have been a legitimate option a couple years ago, but if you have waited this long, you should stay and enjoy the fruits of your decision to wait.

Sorry guys, I started in the late 1960's/early 1970's and shot sports in a 4X5" Press camera [sheet film]; 5 or 6 shots a minute was pushing it!!! So WHAT do you NEED > 20 frames a second for without sports and Wild life???

I started on Nikon. Sold it all for Sony. I'm happy. Not switching unless/until Sony stops making cameras basically.
That said, it's great to see Nikon finally up their game with the Z9. I know a LOT of Nikon shooters who were starting to believe they were going to be left behind.
A solid Nikon offering will only help but push Sony and Canon to be even better.

If eye autofocus were to trickle down to the lower end models I may switch back to Canon.

Price is no factor when u get to this price range. Unless u want to consider prices of lenses which the Sony wins easy.

I have to quote Oscar Wilde here: "cynic" -- someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
