A while back I found out about FLM tripods from Canada. I bought the FLM CP34-L4 and I really like it. This model expands extra high. Weight is 4 lb 10 oz or so. Much cheaper than Gitzo and RRS.

I have a setup from Pro Media Gear with their Katana GK Jr gimbal head and their TR344L legs and I absolutely love it. I’ve owned RRS TVC-34L legs and I’d take the PMG ones over those any day. They’re lighter, cheaper, extend higher, and are shorter when fully collapsed. I’ve never owned Gitzo legs but I have a Gitzo monopod and I think the build quality of the Pro Media Gear stuff is noticeably better. Their gimbal also is like half the weight of a Wimberley but is still rated for 50lbs (I use mine with a 600 IS II and R3/R5 and I’ve never had any issues with stability). Highly recommend them!

    I have a ProMediaGear TR424L Pro-Stix Carbon-Fiber Tripod with Top Plate (Black, 77")
I use it with a Wimberley WH-200 it’s a great Tripod in my opinion. However I rarely use it since my main setup is a ProMediaGear TR34M 34 Series Carbon Fiber Monopod I use it with a Wimberley mono-gimbal & carry it in a dual harness military flagpole holder. Every bit as good as a tripod but with added mobility & cheaper. I use this with my 600mm f/4 II prime, extenders, R5 with battery grip. Can hold & hike with this setup for hours. It’s like hand holding your EF 600 II prime rock steady with no fatigue. I do use my tripod for backyard shots, long exposure, focus stacking etc but that’s kind of rare.

@@jan_wegener For my heavy set up I settled on the LM 364C. My lighter weight set up is LS-284CEX. The light one is perhaps better described as light/medium. It is pretty darn stout, about as light as I want to go. There are many different configurations available so you can pretty much find what you are looking for as far as weight and features etc. I can't say enough about how happy I am with these tripods.

I know Innorel is a more "budget" option, but I've had the Innorel rt90c, and it's been beat to shit in all weather conditions along the Great Lakes and it keeps it holds up to the bigger competition and asking for more. I know there's better out there for way more money, but For a sub $300 usd tripod, it's a tank.

I have strongly insisted since July 2020 at the latest that Canon wouldn't release APS-C camera body and lens in RF system for not cinema camera, but still camera. The reasons I presume are shown below.
    (1)
Customers and users who want a budget price camera are mainly classified as two groups.
The persons belong to the one group could not concern about specifications and could be satisfied with camera kit like EF-M system. Several years later, they almost wouldn't buy a next interchangeable lens camera. The other words, provide of EF-M and EF-S systems are worth keeping unless net deficit.
While the persons belong to the other group couldn't have enough budget, they are interested in photography and/or videography and they want to improve their skill and equipments. The other words, most important thing for them is not image sensor size, but simply price. Their ideal camera is a budget price one using "high speed present generation" FF sensor. I'm calling this camera "R9" which is similar in design to R6 with EVF and flip screen in spite of intensive cost reduction. One of the biggest missions on "R9" is a bridge the gap in videography between M50/M50ii and mid range like R6. While Canon well understood Sony APS-C series like A6*** occupy this gap several years ago, they didn't take measures during long years. On viewpoint of videography, Canon is building their ecosystem, including "R9", R6, R5, R3, R5C, C70, C300iii, C500ii and so on.
    (2)
Regarding APS-C still camera, the rest meaning of existence is crop effect. However, it's extremely difficult the balance between price and high performance; high speed burst shooting, durability etc. I'd like to remind, especially, photographers who need high speed burst shooting that the rolling shutter effect using equivalent technology on image sensor is directly proportional to not image sensor size, but numbers of pixels. The sales period of 7D2 which price was roughly $2000 was about four years; from 2014 to 2018. If the price of 7D2 successor would be almost as same as R6, the demand of this successor should be very small. Therefore, I think "R9" should have high priority to 7D2 successor.
I'm interested in "Kokomo" VR platform. If it would be successful a few years later, many people should have headsets for "Kokomo". Therefore, it could increase demand for "EOS VR System" contents shot by professional videographers and filmmakers. Of course, "R5C and RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye" is the best equipments for "EOS VR System".
For your information: Canon has introduced key parts as shown below.
--- introducing Dual Pixel technology ---
*S35 image sensor for cinema cameras: C300 (01/2012), C100 (11/2012) -- introducing Dual Pixel technology in 2012 and DPAF thanks to update in 11/2013
*APS-C image sensor for still cameras: 70D (08/2013) -- introducing DPAF
--- low speed previous generation ---
    *APS-C image sensor for still cameras: 80D (03/2016) and 11 models (11/2016 - 11/2020)
*FF image sensor for still cameras: 5D4 (08/2016), R (09/2018)
*FF image sensor for still cameras: 6D2 (06/2017), RP (02/2019)
*Image processor for still cameras: DIGIC 8 (03/2018) -- maybe introduce GPGPU for computing deconvolution
*FF image sensor for cinema cameras: C700FF (07/2018), C500ii (12/2019)
--- high speed present generation ---
*High-speed and intelligent communication system between the lens and the camera body: RF mount (09/2018) -- maybe USB3.1 (12pin, 5Gbps)
*APS-C image sensor for still cameras: 90D/M6ii (08/2019) -- maybe delay about 2 years
*Image processor for cinema cameras: DIGIC DV 7 (12/2019)
*FF image sensor for still cameras: 1DX3 (02/2020), R6 (08/2020)
*Image processor for still cameras (and cinema cameras!!): DIGIC X (02/2020)
*S35 image sensor for cinema cameras: C300iii (06/2020), C70 (11/2020) -- introducing Dual Gain Output (DGO)
*FF image sensor for still cameras: R5 (07/2020), R5C (03/2022) -- 2 line readout same time

100% disagree. Pro Media Gear TR423L or RRS tripods are much better. I have the tallest 42mm diameter PMG TR42ML and matching tripod. Yes I’ve now spent about $3,300 on a monopod and tripod, but they are worth every penny. Especially when you’re using a $10,000+ lens like I am. The Pro Media Gear tripods are rated to 125 pounds capacity. Which is double or triple what Leophoto offers. Night and day difference between the $550 Leophoto and the $1,400 RRS or PMG tripods. My daughter whose 11 years old and 90lbs can easily hang from my tripod apex, both feet off the ground. I have images to prove it!

    • @ConnorStefPhoto
      @ConnorStefPhoto 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@patricksmith2553 I suppose if maximum stability and strength is what you're after then that pro media gear one is good, but with it being almost 2lbs heavier, and double the price of the leofoto I listed, I find it hard to recommend the PMG. Most supertelephotos are quite light these days. Gone are the days of 13lbs 600mm lenses and Gitzo 5 series tripods.
I do agree that the build quality of the RRS and PMG is top class.

Tripod: Give Sirui a try - a lightweight carbon fiber or aluminum W-2004 tripod with detachable monopod. I have an older model so cannot say much about the current ones. Of course, super stable will require a heavier brand or model...

@@robgerety Thanks, if I get the chance will try one out. Generally speaking though apart from the ballhead I don't thing the stiffness (as in carbon fiber) doesn't matter that much. There are going to be vibrations from various sources in the environment. If we want true stability then a good old wood tripod is the choice, which is of course not all that portable.

I have had a Manfrotto 055Pro tripod for many years and recently bought their BeFree GT XPRO for a travel tripod. However, neither of these take spikes and I decided I needed a much sturdier tripod with spikes. Some of the brands like Gitzo (owned by Manfrotto) are just ridiculously over priced and Manfrotto has also become expensive. After much research, I discovered Artcise which only seems to be available in Australia from Amazon. I ended up with an Arcise AS95C carbon fibre tripod with an Artcise MB52 ball head. It is a beast of a tripod, but not extremely heavy. They have quite a range, so smaller are available. It is beautifully made and I can highly recommend. Great tripod at a reasonable price.

  • @jpdj2715

Well, Jan, I don't think the Gitzo System 5 is the problem but the lack of assistants to carry stuff for you :) . Systematic 5 has simply been the best in the past 50 years to me. It's the kind of thing you can earmark in your will to posterity. Recent brands are in a way rip-offs. As we shoot digital, we now have incredible sensitivity (as in ISO) and very large dynamic range (15 EV) and this means that motion blur easily becomes visible as a feeling of sub-optimal sharpness (when we pixel peep). Your very long lenses may need a tripod because hand-holding is impractical, but as you want maximum sharpness in your birds, you still want to minimize relying on the camera's VR or whatever it is called.
The question then is what kind of vibration a tripod can dampen or resist. The main one is caused by wind. The question is if you ever shoot birds in a (very) windy - i.e. open - habitat. And then I'm not sure if (very) windy weather makes for good bird photography. If you go out in such weather and the birds are out too, then in that (very) windy environment vibration will play a role. And here the heaviest model of the best brand may not do the best job. If you bring a lot of gear to location, like you do, then hanging your camera bag off the center of the tripod keeps a light tripod stable easily, but that bag and strap may increase sensitivity to wind and thin legs more easily vibrate than thicker or heavier ones.
Some years ago, I saw this YT video testing sensitivity to vibration of different tripod brand/models and my favorite brand was not the best at that.
I briefly searched YT for tripod reviews mentioning vibration to see if I could find it back but the hit list is too long. One genre where absence of vibration may be most important is astro-photography. They would go so far as to place vibration suppression pads under the tripod legs. Might be an idea to also look there for advice.
Anyhow, there is no quick answer. I have a very light Manfrotto (MF) carbon traveler but my longest lens is 180mm only and light. With a MF quick release I needed a hex tool to occasionally tighten things and because the magnesium ball head is excellent, I replaced the MF QR plate by an Arca-compatible top plate that can pan. A 40 year old aluminum Slik Master still does a great job in video but the screw-clamp-bushes need occasional removal and cleaning and then I put some PTFE grease in that, again. This one has a very hard and strong grade of aluminum alloy. Gitzo, Sirui, Benro, Leofoto may all be good. To me, Gitzo's qualities plus their accessories make them sort of unbeatable. Photographers always have the wrong, (1) light modifier, (2) camera bag, (3) tripod. The reality is that you need a few of each for different jobs or use cases.

The best part about it is that for ordinary fairly leveled terrain I need to only use 3 out of 4 section which makes it more stable. Btw I’m 6’2” so it should be plant for most of the people. Also they got plenty great accessories so I’m planning to get few including their gimbal head with leveling base.

I strongly suggest you avoid the RRS 14 which I find too unstable with 600 + 2X shooting. RRS has a very nice fluid gimbal FH-02 which is my preference for mixed stills/video shooting but a bit heavy for travel, where I typically use Flexshooter Pro. Another comment mentions and I agree, you might want to give a Gitzo Series 3 Systematic a try. I've been using one for 20 years and have never felt the need for anything bigger and heavier, even with 8 lb. and 10 lb. prime lenses. In fact, my stable of Gitzo Series 3 tripods has now grown to three... One fitted full time with a gimbal, a second fitted with a heavy duty ballhead and gimbal adapter, and a third extra tall version fitted with a ballhead and a column that also can be reversed for very low angle close up work.
Perhaps you can borrow a Series 3 and see if it's sufficient for your purposes. With newer cameras and lenses that are more compact, weigh less and have more capable image stabilization, a Series 3 might be all you need.
I'm disappointed but not surprised to hear the R7 is likely to be delayed... The R1 too, though that's more out of curiosity since I'm very unlikely to ever buy one.

The 34 series is the perfect balance of weight and stiffness for me - they go from 50 to 70 inches tall, either 3 or 4 sections. Build quality is of the same standard as RRS. They also have a very nice Gimbal if you want to take some weight out.

Have you seen the price of the RF 800mm f/5.6 and the the RF 1200mm f/8? That is serious Big White money, US$17K for the 800mm and US$20K for the 1200mm. Not for me. Having said that, I still need an upgrade which is why the Nikon Z 800mm f/6.3 PF is my only hope. If not, I will settle for the A1 + FE 200-600mm as and when the new A1 comes out as I refuse to pay US$6.5K for a flagship camera with a crappy low res 1 million dot LCD screen.

Das ganze ist deutlich leichter als mein Gitzo Systematic mit Gitzo Kimball und auch noch deutlich handlicher! Wichtig waren mir die wenigen Auszüge, um ein stabiles Stativ zu haben. Re tripods. Birders in Singapore and South Korea tend to use video tripods and heads. The most popular being the Sachler FSB6 head, 75 or 100mm bowl mount, on a suitably sturdy set of bowl mount cf legs, eg from Sachter or Manfrotto (appear to be made in the same place).
I also use this set up, as well as a 2nd setup up witb a smaller lighter video head, 75mm bowl, on a set of smaller Sachler cf legs for walking.
Once you have used quality video tripod heads and legs, you will never go back. Stills market tripods and heads seem so cheap and flimsy in comparison - which they are.
Fyi, Sachler is the industry standard in video head smoothness. Extremely low sticktion, multiadjustable drag and preload. And yet, you can pay nearly as much for Gitzo which is plainly junk in comparison, and videographers wont use them.
If you ever shoot video, even a tiny bit, you should have a proper video head. Super smooth and shake free panning @ 1000mm

Stabilität aber top! Vor allem wenn man unten noch einen Rucksack dranhängt, dann bewegt sich selbst beim Seawatching im Sturm nicht mehr viel. I’m pretty new, so maybe I’m missing something. I’m shooting with the R5, 100-500 zoom. Sometimes with the 1.4tc. I’ve just recently programmed a button to toggle to crop mode. I get that reduces the number of pixels, but I am getting some good results. So, wouldn’t the R7 basically just be the R5 in cropped mode? Also any thoughts on using cropped in camera vs cropped in post?

    • @christophercarlimages9003
      @christophercarlimages9003 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

R5 in crop mode is about 17mpx. They are speculating that an R7 will be 32 mpx. So there is a difference in pixel density

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

An R7 would likely have around 30mpix, so you would have much more room to crop than on the R5, where crop mode is about 17mpix

    • @davet3530
      @davet3530 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I’ve tried both cropping in post and shooting in crop mode. In an earlier video Jan’s good friend Glen Bartley talks of the benefits of not using the crop mode in camera but doing it later in post and a lot of that is that it gives you more flexibility to place the subject in the fame exactly where you want it. If you have already used the crop mode in camera and then try to further recompose you are further cropping the file and reducing the size of it. From having tried both, I agree with Glen.
As for the R5 v Possible R7, the cropped sensor of the latter is going to make you images appear a lot closer in camera than on a full frame body. You would be able to get a slightly larger ‘magnification’ of the image from the cropped sensor R7 (x1.6) than the R5 with the x1.4 extender on a lens. When using your 100-500 on the r7 You would also be able to have a minimum F7.1 as opposed to F10 therefore gaining a stop of light, and potentially better focus operation. And you would be able to use the whole range of the 100-500 not just the 300-500 that you get when you put on an extender.

Concerning tripods: I doubt it that I own anything you'd be terribly interested in. But the multiple award-winning bird photographer Arthur Morris changed some years ago from Gitzo to Induro, mostly due to service problems with Gitzo. And he claimed Induro was better.
Now, a word of caution: I'm not sure how trustworthy the man is. He was an "Explorer of Light" with Canon for many years, until they chose to strip him of that title. Then he sold all his Canon gear and bought Nikon instead. He claimed that he wasn't angry with Canon, oh no - Nikon was simply much better! Until he migrated to Sony a few years (or was it only months?) later! I'm not sure what cameras he uses these days.
So take his gear recommendations with a grain of salt, but still Induro might be worth looking at?

Even that would be a significant increase from the 20MP 7DII, just as the full frame 24MP R3 has effectively superseded the 20MP 1DX Mark III.
Yes, Canon should produce a higher MP APS-C R-series camera... perhaps 32.5MP like the 90D and M6 Mark II. But that should be another model, distinct from the R7.
R7 needs to have advanced AF similar to R3, R5, R6... BSI sensor like R3... Smaller body format like R5/R6 with optional grip (ideally the same BG-R10 used by R5/R6).
But I sure was hoping to see R7 sooner... Not have to wait another year for it. Guess I'll have to keep shooting with my 7DIIs!

Okay, when you're playing with 2 R5's and 2 R3's .. but leave the poor Z9 in the trunk .. then you're silently admitting to still be a Canon-fanboy 😛
And I'll admit to be a bird-nerd waiting for the animal part of the reviews yet to come ;-)
With latest batch of R7 rumors, I'm getting the impression it might come more expensive than the R6, unless they leave out IBIS and the low light quality would suck for a BSI sensor. If they'd also leave out eye-AF then the R7 would be the new joke in town ..
I am not going to suggest you my tripod, it's extremely light, but not sturdy enough for the big whites I cannot afford ..

Never denied I was one, at least a little bit haha. The R3 is a very nice body ergonomically.
The rumours on the R7 don't seem real to me, it feels way too good, unless it will be very expensive, as you say.
It seemed more like a "Specs I want list"

@@jan_wegener exactly. But the next rumor about the R7 to be joined by some RF-S lenses is stuff I don't want at all ;-)
As far as I recall, you didn't repeat naming yourself a canon-fanboy since starting to test the Sony A1 ..
Actually last month in a local nature reserve, I started talking to a birder to help me identify a Flussregenpfeifer which I shot a bit earlier. He was nicely equipped with an A1 and 600/4. After also talking about gear and editing, I wanted to suggest him your youtube channel. But he already knew you as "the one who can explain things extremely well, and who is honest and objective regarding the different brands"

I’d have to disagree with you on the customization of the r3. It’s dreadful. Little different than the r5. Canon’s like of customization is unbelievably poor compared to especially Sony. Nikon is pretty good, too. Every time I try Canon, I end up disgusted with the terrible lack of micro customization.

???? I have both the R3 and Z9 and customization of the R3 is substantially better then the Z9.

i want to put a comment to elevate the algorithm . done. I really enjoy using the R3 but clearly i can crop in more with the R5....it seems to me the R3 very closely resolves in image sharpness to my 30mpixel R....might have to look more into it. I carry both. (in the garage, R3, R5, R6, A7iv (sold my A1), A6400, Z6ii - R6 and A6400 is for when i enter the bad guys are allowed to carry guns while I go to jail if i had a gun neighborhood to jack the camera gear...now they come to you with the gun in your face to take the $7,000.00US carbon bikes in Democrat lead cities; so just living carefully. Aus. looks really beautiful and civilized.
