After making a striking directorial debut with her screen adaptation of The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola offers a story of love and friendship blooming under unlikely circumstances in this comedy drama. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a well-known American actor whose career has gone into a tailspin; needing work, he takes a very large fee to appear in a commercial for Japanese whiskey to be shot in Tokyo. Feeling no small degree of culture shock in Japan, Bob spends most of his non-working hours at his hotel, where he meets Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) at the bar. Twentysomething Charlotte is married to John (Giovanni Ribisi), a successful photographer who is in Tokyo on an assignment, leaving her to while away her time while he works. Beyond their shared bemusement and confusion with the sights and sounds of contemporary Tokyo, Bob and Charlotte share a similar dissatisfaction with their lives; the spark has gone out of Bob's marriage, and he's become disillusioned with his career. Meanwhile, Charlotte is puzzled with how much John has changed in their two years of marriage, while she's been unable to launch a creative career of her own. INTERPRETER: He wants you to turn, look in camera. O.K.?
BOB: That's all he said?

INTERPRETER (in very formal Japanese to the director): He has prepared and is ready. And he wants to know, when the camera rolls, would you prefer that he turn to the left, or would you prefer that he turn to the right? And that is the kind of thing he would like to know, if you don't mind.
DIRECTOR (very brusquely, and in much more colloquial Japanese): Either way is fine. That kind of thing doesn't matter. We don't have time, Bob-san, O.K.? You need to hurry. Raise the tension. Look at the camera. Slowly, with passion. It's passion that we want. Do you understand?
INTERPRETER (In English, to Bob): Right side. And, uh, with intensity.
BOB: Is that everything? It seemed like he said quite a bit more than that.
DIRECTOR: What you are talking about is not just whiskey, you know. Do you understand? It's like you are meeting old friends. Softly, tenderly. Gently. Let your feelings boil up. Tension is important! Don't forget.
INTERPRETER (in English, to Bob): Like an old friend, and into the camera.
BOB: O.K.
DIRECTOR: You understand? You love whiskey. It's Suntory time! O.K.?

Do you even understand what we are trying to do? Suntory is very exclusive. The sound of the words is important. It's an expensive drink. This is No. 1. Now do it again, and you have to feel that this is exclusive. O.K.? This is not an everyday whiskey you know.

ROFL now I get it... For the longest time I thought Japanese was just a wordy language.
Joseph Wong Thank you man!, i speak spanish and english (I do my best), but in the subtitles, sometimes doesn't put the translation of japanese. And I think this is on purpose, to feel the same as the character of bill murray.But I always wanted to know the lines from the Commercial director.

I lived in Japan for a few years, and of all the great scenes in LIT, this has got to be the funniest as it's the most accurate depiction of discussing business through a Japanese translator I've ever seen.
Why don't they translate?
@@kentallard8852 The POV Character is Bill Murray's and the Director more or less wants you to experience what his character is. I saw this in theater and felt the same until reviewing how kind of intense the interaction was. It wouldn't have been impactful if they did it show translation.
@@kentallard8852 Because the 'translator' is usually whoever in the office available that day happens to have the highest TOEIC score (a multiple-choice reading and listening English test) and probably have very little experience at live interpretation.
@@kentallard8852 I lived in China for 6 years and though it is not Japan I believe that the translator also needs to save face for bother parties. He or she not only has to translate but also make sure that harmony can coexist between the parties as he or she wants things to go smoothly. For example if I said "He's a a liar for telling me he would pay me today and its two days over due, why Mr. Cheng stalling?!" and the translator would never translate these words directly, as this would make the situation worse and also he or she may even be blamed despite the obvious neutrality of the translator. They might instead say "Mr. Smith is confused as to why he has yet to be paid and he wonders if maybe he misunderstood your promise to pay by a certain date" In Asian countries it is more important that the feelings, pride and integrity of the parties be preserved rather than actual truth be told if telling the truth servers no other purpose than to prove you are right and still get nothing done. You have to think a step ahead. Sometimes shouting and screaming gets what you want in China and other times it would have been better to have chosen your words more carefully even if you were in the right. Many Asian people believe foreigners in their countries don't pick up on this but as time goes on your realize it little by little until you see its blatantly obvious. Also to add to this it is usually the case that the translator isn't very good at translating anyways and this just confuses things more.
Ah, I'm jealous. I only stay for about a week, and even then, it wasn't enough time. I've always wanted to live there. Meet a beautiful Japanese woman, and have really great kids with, but instead, I ended up marrying the exact opposite of who I was looking for

In dramatic roles, I think Bill Murray is really underrated as an actor. The way he uses slight, subtle facial expressions to convey the sadness and frustration under the calm surface is just brilliant. Great, great scene. It brings to mind how much of comedy comes from a source of pain, a trait that seems common in many legendary comedians.
Thank for articulating what I like so much about this scene.
Most comedians are broken people; humour is learned a coping mechanism for the pain.
Comedy specialist tend to do serious rather well but serious specialist tend to struggle with comedy, it’s hard to laugh and it’s harder to make people laugh.

I was in stitches. This movie nailed a low-key humour that other titles have a hard time pulling off. It's probably Bill Murray's performance, and a mix of good writing and direction.
I watched this many times and loved it even before I knew that the Director was really saying! The first time I watched this in the theatre alone I knew it was a movie that changed my life.
It's all there but the writing is very very smart

I've seen this film once before I studied Japanese and then once after. Its like an entirely different film once you know Japanese, its interesting.
The way the director,screams,acts and all...like he's on coke or something. PRICELESS!!! haha

Japan is exactly like this- no exaggeration at all! I know it from my own professional experience.
When this movie first came out in 2003, I didn't realize how good it really was. Now, almost 20 years later, it's one of my favorite movies. I think one of the reason I like it so much, is that it was made at the exact same time I was stationed near Tokyo while serving in the Navy.
It resonated with me because I’d just finished 18 months worth of two week turnaround fly in fly out work doing process change in a Japanese manufacturing plant. One of the hardest gigs I ever had. It was a cultural minefield. Loved the country though.
I have to agree, I think it was like the second movie I ever saw in a theatre and I was immediately intrigued. It was such a great first experience for a kid. It really didn’t disappoint.
And yes. It’s been 20 years but it’s a classic. Did you guys know it was shot in 30 days

Besides giving my thanks to the translators of the japanese text, which added additional fun to the movie, I want to congratulate Suntory for their marketing strategies since 2008. Nobody in Japan cared for Whiskey anymore after its big time in the 80's.. Guerilla marketing like this, made it possible to create the biggest revival or relaunch in history if you might believe some marketing study sources. They transformed the Suntory Highball from a drink that old people drink before sleep to one of the most popular drinks of the japanese youth, nowadays..
As a marketing guy, I would like to do a keirei to the Suntory marketing team and humbly ask if they have a job position left for a guy from Europe :)
Sipping Hibiki Harmony while watching this right now lol. Sadly 12yr and 17yr bottlings are no more but its still great

I understand the nuances of both languages so when I saw this scene in the theater I had to bite my finger to prevent me from exploding with laughter. It's almost uncanny how well Coppola portrays the helpless feelings of being on the outside experienced by every foreigner in Japan, like so much is happening but you don't know anything about what it is and when he says "it seemed he said quite a bit more" Bill Murray just nails that indescribable (not in a bad way, just unique) anxiety you feel in Japan from never knowing the full picture and trying in vain to compensate for that somehow.
Bill Murray is great, nobody does deadpan as well as he does.

After a couple years of searching, I managed to acquire a bottle of that very whisky. It's incredibly light, smooth and sweet. For the whisky/scotch people out there, this stuff lands in the flower/citrus end of things.
Looks like Hibiki Harmony judging by the bottle. Won’t find that anytime soon.

No, it’s Hibiki 17 which has been discontinued as of 2015. Harmony is the NAS version that replaced the discontinued 12 year.
I can second that. Its Hibiki 17 (same ish bottle as harmony) and discontinued and EXPENSIVE (A thousand bucks). Hibiki Harmony is a little rare, retails for under 100$ but hard to actually find at that price point because of its popularity but you can find it. I bought my last bottle at Trader Joes retail, belive it or not :D (was told the employees usually buy it off the shelf before the customers get a chance) but the bottle before that I paid 30 bucks over retail at a specialty store. Its a great, smooth and subtle whisky .
They also make Yamazaki 55 if you have a million bucks handy :D

Few times in cinema, a scene depicts a film's concept so clearly in the first few minutes of runtime. This is a fantastic scene, wonderfully written by Sofia Coppola and with a terrific excecution from the three characters. The editing and takes are amazing as well.

Just tried the Hibiki for the first time. I've tried em all and I got to say TEXTURALLY this is the BEST whisky I've ever had, it's like pillows sliding down your throat and butter coating your palette. Not the bestt flavor (it's great I've just had better) but definitely the best mouth feel. Give it a try, I live in WA so for me it's about 90 dollars, for those of you who live in states without a 50% liquor tax it's probably gonna run ya about 50-60

Being a huge weeb in 8th grade was so worth it because understanding both languages in this enhances the experience so much
Haha this scene is awesome. Bill Murray is so funny. Idk how he can say that in that cheesy intense tone at 2:40-2:55 and keep a straight face. I wish there was an entire movie that was as funny as this one scene.

As a German who spent many years in Asia, I am crying with laughter, ritelarry!
Too bad the clips ends with the "cut cut cut" and not with the "tanomuyou" (pleeeeeeeeease or jeeeeez) one second later, that was a great word in that line lol
I find it kind of unrealistic how the director seems unaware that the translator isn't communicating everything he's saying (as evidenced when he says to Bob things like, "Don't pretend you don't understand"). Even if he doesn't understand English, he should be as aware as Bob is of the obviously huge difference in length between his Japanese instructions and what is being given to Bob by the translator. Especially since a Japanese director who's filming a commercial in English (or most any urban Japanese person) is likely to understand English better than Bob understands Japanese.
That being said, it wouldn't be as humorous if that were the case. As it is I love this scene, so I'll give it a free pass for the sake of comedy!
I wish I could see the final version!!!!
I only speak a little Japanese, but I think this stuff is actually pretty simple to translate. The director asks him to look at the camera in a laid-back way, as if meeting a friend, and toast with him. The translator oversimplifies. I think he later tells Bill that this is SUNTORY WHISKEY, the very best (as if he was drinking it too casually). I can't make out the rest.

Bob, who is in town to make a whiskey commercial, doesn't speak Japanese. His director (Yutaka Tadokoro), a histrionic Japanese hipster, doesn't speak English. In one scene, Bob goes on the set and tries to understand the director through a demure interpreter (Akiko Takeshita), who is either unable or (more likely) unwilling to translate everything the director is rattling on about.
Needless to say, Bob is lost. And without subtitles, so is the audience. Here, translated into English, is what the fulmination is really about.

I bought Suntory whiskey after watching this movie. I've had the Yamakazi and the Hibiki. Both lovely whiskies.
The interpreter did a good job, cos most of what we say is useless bs.

when I lived in Japan, I used to watch the news and the interpreter was that bad. I think it's funnier if you've lived in Japan for a while.

Funny, that whisky now is one of the most expensive on the market, i own a 17 years old Hibiki (same bottle like in the movie, but the one in the movie is more common), which i have purchased on a trip to Japan with my wife, paid for it about $30 US, now it's worth over $1000 US which i keep it as a collectors item, didn't even drink it!
