Suntory Time scene from Lost in Translation

  • Bob, who is in town to make a whiskey commercial, doesn't speak Japanese. His director (Yutaka Tadokoro), a histrionic Japanese hipster, doesn't speak English. In one scene, Bob goes on the set and tries to understand the director through a demure interpreter (Akiko Takeshita), who is either unable or (more likely) unwilling to translate everything the director is rattling on about.
Needless to say, Bob is lost. And without subtitles, so is the audience. Here, translated into English, is what the fulmination is really about.

The Japanese dialogue - and the ineptitude of the translator - is actually very realistic for this kind of shoot in Japan.

The issue here in japan is that Japanese corporations will only use Japanese translators . It’s very very rare to see a western translator in these situations even if their Japanese is near native. Sad but very very true. Just look around any major city, it’s full of signs with weird, strange and incorrect English because a Japanese person made the sign. I’ve lost projects to Japanese personnel whose English was way below my Japanese level.

I'm a POC and I also think this scene is amusing. Learning Japanese at the moment so that adds to the amusement (can sort of understand what the director is saying). I get the feeling that the woke brigade won't be satisfied until they alienate all but their small band of extremists.
