Quite a deep movie. Think it shows well how you never feel more alone than when you feel alone in a crowd. Like 30 million people in Tokyo. But when you're with someone you really connect with, it's like there's nobody else around. Even when surrounded by 30 million in Tokyo. Videography so well done.
Even though Charlotte and Bob don't end up together, due to numerous factors, at least they were they were able to connect based on their mutual loneliness.
Sofia Coppola intentionally put a lot of Bogie and Bacall’s dynamic into Bob and Charlottes’s relationship. That factor alone convinces me that these characters ended up together down the road after the events of this movie. The right person coming into your life changes everything. There’s no way Charlotte and Bob would continue to put up with spouses who treat them dismissively and contemptuously, not after having experienced otherwise with each other. There are many hidden clues in the dialogue and even embedded in the music score pointing to some kind of happy ending beyond the events of the movie. What a serendipitous masterclass in moviemaking!
i agree ... and to confirm this ... pls listen to the language and dialogue between Bob ( Bill Murray ) and the voice of Lydia - wife ( who you never see ) .. but you can tell .. if anyone has had some life experience ... this isnt going to get better ... but quite the opposite .
Yes, Lydia’s passive aggressive faxes and phone convos with negative undertones were definitely a dead give away about where this was all heading on Bob’s end. Nobody just puts up with that kind of derision when they see a way out, when they wake up to the realization that they can live life differently. So Lydia appears to be Bob’s version of Mayo Methot. Heck, it wasn’t long after making a connection with Bacall that Bogie ended it with Methot. It’s also no coincidence that Bob and Charlotte have a similar age difference to their real-life Hollywood counterparts. There’s so much subtlety built into this movie that many prior comments just plainly overlook.
Sofia Coppolas best film maybe. Scarlet Johansson best film, definitely. But that is not to discredit JoJo Rabbit, Lucy, Marriage Story or any of her other box office flicks. It is really hard to believe she was only 17! She is 40 years old today. Hopefully she will eclipse this film in years to come. A great actor. Happy birthday Scarlett Johansson.
Not sure about that You chose your partner Then you do your absolute best to make it work. And if theres kids involved, put aside yourself for the sake of them. Charlotte has more reason to as no kids

Bill Murray should have had an Oscar for this. Scarlett Johansson has never been as good since. Such a simple wonderful movie.
He came close to winning 🥇
Cannot disagree with this.
You can't pick the person. They show up and you know it.

Bob and Charlotte shoulda divorced their spouses so they could end up together.
Not sure about that
You chose your partner
Then you do your absolute best to make it work. And if theres kids involved, put aside yourself for the sake of them.
Charlotte has more reason to as no kids
This was a friendship thing more than a love thing. Bob has kids older than her.
