This was recorded live at the Fillmore East in March of 1971. Dickie Betts played co-lead/harmony guitar with Duane Allman playing the slide guitar parts, as was normal when Duane was alive. By the end of October 1971, Duane lost his life as the result of a motorcycle accident. Truly one of the greatest tragedies in the history of music.

Eat A Peach is one of the best albums ever recorded. Sadly, Duane was not able to play on three of the tracks with the rest of the band. Please Call Home is a great song you should check out from the Idlewild South album. It really features Gregg's voice.

I was having a mediocre kinda day. Saw this post and it completely lifted me up! There is nothing like first generation Allman Brothers. Duane and Dickey trading licks. Gregg being the whitest black dude on the planet. I've been a fan since forever. Jay/Amber, you made this old dude's day for sure. I can't tell you how much I love watching Amber's response to these classics. She truly "gets" it. Love you both. May God continually bless you, your family, and all of my extended family here. Peace and blessings to all!!

Right there with you, brother! esp love the Allman Brothers/ various other blues groups! I deal with multiple health issues many of which chronic pain daily basis.. given my recent (now complete loss) of mobility, I’m now spending even more time accruing ways to help me cope, these are what I call “enjoyable distractions” 😉😁 Listening to a wide variety in the types of music is a Must! This most definitely includes excellent blues (obviously) LoL It is definitely an important part of what helps me cope! Also, I sometimes love hearing songs where the lead female has an especially husky voice. I could go on but don’t wish to get carried away! Haha! Cheers from a Cdn blues lovin’ sister! music 🎼 🫶😉😄👍🎶

My friend and I had lawn tickets, we sat on the grass with a blanket and a cooler, and just gave ourselves up to the jams. These guys defined southern blues rock and influenced bands that followed them like Lynyrd Skynyrd. Duane Allman primarily played the electric slide guitar, Dickey Betts also played guitar for them (still with us at about 80) and between him and Duane they defined a signature sound of trading licks back and forth which you hear in the middle "solo" part.

I was fortunate to see them a bunch in the day and they never disappointed. They were very cool and had a great relationship with the audience. One time they had a guest drummer, I think it was Paul Riddle, and he sat in for a couple of songs on Jaimoe's drum kit. Jaimoe went to the side of the stage to watch, he must have gotten thirsty because I noticed he was working himself to the stair side of the stage. He walked down the stairs into the audience, then made his way to the concession stand and bought a really large slushy drink then worked back to the stairs, dancing to the song and having a great time, then went back up onto the stage to wait for his turn on the drums again. What other band could come into the audience like that and not be bothered by the fans. Class act through and through.

Back in the day I saw them six times and every show was a banger. You had the cover of Eat A Peach on screen, but I believe that was from their live show at the Fillmore East which I attended. I can’t think of too many bands that sounded like that live. They never disappointed. The guitar interlay of Dickie and Duane
coupled with Barry Oakley’s bass playing, the two drummers and the ferocious singing and organ playing of Gregg, really set the bar high. If you haven’t played it yet try “ whipping post.”

The Allman Brothers "At Fillmore East" is probably the best live album of all time. There's an interview out there with Duane & he is talking about the first two albums they made and how he wanted to capture the way they sounded live. Sadly, Duane passed before the world discovered how great they were live, when this album was released. BTW, the drummers, Butch holding done the fort with his "freight train" drumming and Jaimoe with his fills and thrills, and Berry Oakley's incredible bass was a fantastic rhythm section. Duane and Dickie sharing lead guitars and Gregg's vocals and organ! My favorite band of all times!

Great twin guitars here as always, the original pair on this tune were the best but they had great guitar players all the way to the end. If you have not done both versions of Whipping Post, you should, brilliant studio original then the incredible extended version on the Live at Filmore East legendary show. You will disappear into that song, I assure you, it is an all time classic. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶

Greatest. Southern. Rock. Band. Ever. Period.
Saw them, along with around 600,000 other folks, at the Summer Jam concert at Watkins Glen in 73. Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead and The Band. 3 bands. Was supposed to start at noon, but started at 10am because a few people were already there waiting. Played until laaate that night with a jam between all 3 groups with lineups constantly changing so the guys could take breaks. The "Woodstock" concert nobody knows about because they never made a movie or soundtrack. I went to both of the US Festivals in California just to experience that kind of vibe again. Both were 3 days of fun, but Summer Jam was the best of any concert I've been to. Never did get to see Duane play, Chuck Leavell joined the group on piano to do duets with Dickey Betts - as Duane was obviously irreplaceable. This brings back lots of great memories. Thanks.

Dickey Betts is the other guitar player Duane and Dickey played off each other playing lead Dicky is still around and plays around town in Sarasota, FL. See what I mean around the 5:15 mark.... love hearing these guys Thanks for reacting to one of my fav bands... the one and only Allman Brothers Band!

On this solo Duane played the slide parts while Dickie Betts played the rest So solo starts with Betts and second half is Duane’s slide guitar. Got to see them 4 years straight in late 90s-early 2000s at the Nassau Coliseum in NYC, when they would like 15 shows there every March every year-there were always nothing short of amazing. But lost a little when they kicked out Betts same had to be when they tragically lost Duane in 1971. But we’re always amazing every line up.

These lists are very subjective. But when you talk to people who know musicians, Duane Allman's name comes up as does Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, Steve Gaines, Gary Rossington, Bonnie Raitt and Allen Collins.

This song, the beginning part, was in the movie Almost Famous that you watched. Along with so many other great songs. The movie's writer/director, Cameron Crowe, had gone on tour with The Allman Brothers as a teenager, working on a Rolling Stone magazine article about the band...so he knows them & their music well.

“Whipping Post” needs to be done. Even Frank Zappa used to perform it live. Great tune. As mentioned, Duane was killed in a crash by running into a truck transporting peaches because Georgia is the peach state. Then they released an album titled “Eat A Peach” in his honor. And speaking of the drums Jordan, they were one of the original two drummer bands.

Saw them September 1971 at my small college my freshman year. One month before Duane died. They were on the college concert circuit and just one of many bands in early 70s like Santana who also performed in our basketball arena later that same semester. It was great time to be in college and to be alive.

Amber, actually, that's Dickey Betts playing the guitar you commented on at first. Dickey and Duane shared guitar parts on songs. Duane was playing slide guitar. Dickey Betts never get's the recognition he deserves on guitar because everyone focuses only on Duane. But Dickey is one of the greats on that guitar! He also wrote a few of their most well known songs, "Ramblin' Man, Jessica, etc.

Right ear Dickey Betts, left ear Duane Allman. Cant hardly beat the two of them for a guitar duo. Add the soulful gravely voice of Greg. the pounding drums of Jamoe and Butch all held up the bass of Barry, you got the best sounding band out of the south. Saw them in Aug of 1971 at an outdoor fest in St. Paul, MN
