One of the strangest and saddest features of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is its appalling record of cruelty to animals. From slaughterhouses where live pigs are dropped to boiling water, to using SUVs to ram and run over kangaroos, to the mindless torture of cats, chickens and small wild birds and animals - the PBCC does it all - and apparently takes great pleasure in it.
It all started with a great slaughter of pets in the 1960s, when James Taylor Jr, the alcoholic leader of the cult decreed that animals were "unclean" and were used by Satan to take our affections away from God. Within days of this pronouncement, tens of thousands of cats, dogs, rabbits, birds and other creatures were drowned, beaten to death or if lucky, euthanized.
Hear accounts from PBCC leavers who were traumatized as children by this callous genocide of pets.
Then it get worse...
Hear One School Global teachers describe how their students delighted in cruelty to animals, and how they had to bring in speakers from animal cruelty charities to try and help them. Hear how the prominent and extremely wealthy Bruce Hazell tormented birds and rabbits in PBCC priest Oliver Woodcock's backyard. We hear how young brethren attending Bible readings, and actually staying in the house with Global PBCC leader Bruce D Hales would spend the time between church meetings "Roo bashing" including running over and fatally wounding mother kangaroos with joeys in their pouches.
Finally, in a filthy mélange of religious hypocrisy, homophobia, political corruption and cruelty to animals, the story of the execrable Roger Unwin's Tasmanian pig farm.
We end this podcast on a light note with funny videos and pictures of ex-members sharing their beautiful moments with their pets.

Animals are the most healing beings on the earth. They are gifts.
The first recollection of no pets was very early 1960's in australia, my father had to let our budgy go and we had to drown our kittens. I was devastated at the time.
If my memory serves accurately, JT Jr's household had a little dog. It was lovingly cared for and was often fed (including by JT Jr) scraps from the family table. However, what I was told, was that he felt his family's affections and devotion to Christ were risked by this little dog, so he issued the edict to get rid of all pets, however loved, including - I believe - their own dog. Makes one wonder about the whole thing, really. Seems so strange and unnatural. Makes one wonder about how one could callously hurt their own family members, and makes one wonder at faith and affection for Christ being so tenuous so as to be challenged by a small dog.
Our 14 year old dog was put to sleep.I walked it down to town to meet my Dad who then took it.I was 12.
My posted early photos were of my contraband dog named “Sadie”. These photos were all taken while I was in. Still sad her life was cut short at age 2. Over the years I have had many pets. I now have an almost 15 year old dog, who is feeling her age and getting rusty in the back legs. While I was watching this I had to pause it as she had fallen over on the polished boards and couldn’t get traction. I got her onto a bath mat and then she could get up.
We had cats starting in 2007 (we left in 2009). We typically kept the cats outside when we had break but there was one Sunday where Ava wasn't interested in that and she came running across the kitchen with a kitchen full of brethren 😂❤️
I also witnessed the riding over kangaroos. In Lake Cargelligo. It was close to the final nail in the coffin for me as i might have called it then. Not long after that they published their fund raiser drought book with a picture of a dead kangaroo as if they cared. I wondered if it really died from natural causes.
Absolutely sickening!! The abuse and brutalising of people let alone animals….. masqueraded as Christianity??!! No wonder the Pharisees were called offspring of vipers!
Thankfully I managed to hold on to my faith… simply because what goes on in the secretly in here is not what Christianity is about. My own family was brutalised for nigh on 30 years… it was hell. Don’t think this portrays Jesus for one minute. He came as a healer and upholder of the abused, maligned and broken…. Not a champion of hypocritical ‘belief’.
My prayer is for healing for those of you so devastated by all this… and for good people in there to finally see the light.

The last time I checked, it’s not a new dispensation yet? So why would any man of God get it wrong and the next guy has it right? What gives? The truth and the word of God stands through time! Bruce Hazel! What a pervert! Who would have him be their front man for any organization?
Towards the latter days of my moms life she went blind from diabeties and dad got a little maltese poodle called fisher who kept her company and would just give a growl if anyone came into the room where she was and then mom would know there was somebody there well that was a problem for the peebs so they sent around their priest who was a close friend and neighbour well he knew he could just walk in as our front door was never locked ..... Fisher did not know him so gave his ankles a bite when he came in ...... Dad said he osoms guard dog and knows how to do his job 😂😂
