This video tutorial covers the process of replacing OEM Rancho rear shock absorbers on a 2014 GMC Sierra or Chevy Silverado. The shock absorber replacement process covered in this video will be the same or very similar on many other vehicles. I installed a set of Bilstein 5100 Monotube Gas shock absorbers, replacing the factory set of Rancho shocks. there was some question as to which way I should install the shocks as it seems as though the shock should be installed with the rubber boot at the top of the shock. According to the Bilstein documentation, the shock should be installed with the label text in the correct position. Essentially, if the label is upsidedown, then so is your shock absorber! How do you pronounce Bilstein? Head over to the poll that I have set up on the community tab and let me know!
The process covered in this video repair tutorial will be the same or similar on most vehicles including U.S. and Canadian models of:
    2014 - 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    2014 - 2016 GMC Sierra 1500

Just bought a new 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 with those stock (crap) Rancho shocks. My old truck ('14 Silverado) had Bilsteins at all four corners. Loved the ride. Miss the Bilstein ride quality already. SO, ordered some Bilstein 5100 for the rear on the new truck...and will likely do the fronts. Thanks for doing a video on R/R'ing the shocks...likely will DIY the rears myself.

I prefer oil spray than rubberize undercoat due to if you dont sand rust off completley it will pocket under the undercoat and create moisture pockets and rot the frame quick.

For everyone saying these are installed upside down, these are monotube design, which can be installed either direction, but preferly boot down. Rough Country N3 variable gas shocks get installed boot up

Bilstein recommends their logos be installed so they're upright and readable. So dust cover down.

I installed them on my truck yesterday, the body side eyelet was bolted to the axel, as was the OE Shock. Also, due to the type of boot mine came with (non-corrugated) installing it that way will keep water from building up.

You do not need jackstands or a jack for this at all the rear axle does not move or need moved for this job

Man I putt the booties up the 1st time. Double checked here and elsewheres, the booties go down. Gotta read the shock ... check w/ Bilstein they put holes in for fluids to seep out. Took half as long, but on a Texas afternoon doing it twice ... wasn't nice. SO BEWARE BOOTIES GO DOWN!!!

These are great shocks, I have the 5100's in the front and rear much smoother and noticeable handling improvements when towing. You can level the truck with the fronts which are adjustable.... One question, my mechanic had installed the rear with the boots up, would this cause any issues in ride quality?
