    I have worked in industrial maintenance for well over 30 years. Replacing the struts and swapping the springs on a Nissan Altima was one of the scariest things I have ever done mechanically. The right tool for the job is absolutely necessary and your life indeed relies on it. This is not a job for a novice. I'll never change the springs out again. Everything else, no problem.Thanks for the video.

    I just installed Bilstein 5100 's on my 2008 GMC Sierra with 206,000 miles. Broke a bolt that had rusted to the arm. Got two new bolts at the parts store. I got a rental spring compression tool. It was not easy. Now the truck is leveled and rides nice. Gained about two inches.

    I’m about to replace the struts on my truck with leveling struts. The instructions say to remove the sway bar end link, tire rod, and upper ball joint. With this video it shows that all that isn’t necessary and will make the job so much easier thanks!!!!

    Adding a 2.5” under-strut leveling block to my ‘15 Silverado. This is just the video I needed to show I can do it without entirely disassembling the front end. To get the block underneath, should I compress the strut with a bottle jack, or maybe a pry bar?

It was nice to see the part with the wall mounted strut compressor to see just how easy it was to switch. Plan on buying the Bilstein 5100 struts and shocks for it. Thanks again!

    Just installed RC N3 2" quick lift struts on my 2014 Sierra (4wd). I only loosened the tie rod end and sway bar end link to provide a little more play. You can remove and reinstall the struts without taking everything else apart. HOWEVER, you will have a harder time as you will have to force the old strut out and the new one in. I'm 6'2, 235lbs and could not do it with just a pry bar as some suggest. Maybe if it was on a lift rather than in my driveway I could have gotten a better angle and leverage. Ultimately, I ended up jacking up the bottom of the strut just a bit while pounding out the lower mounting bracket with a 2-3' piece of 1" steel pipe. To install, I jacked up the bottom of the strut and used a pry bar to pop bracket into place. If you don't want to muscle it out and in the way I did, then spend the extra time to disconnect everything. At the end of the day, this is a nice ride improvement over the Rancho strut and spacer puck I had.

    Hey can you help me at 5:17 the bottom of my shock was slightly off and didn’t line up. I tried to turn the shock like you did but couldn’t doo it. It wasn’t turning so I kinda forced it somehow to line up and got the bolts to go. When I went to get an alignment the guy at the shop said I was suppose to lock the steering wheel straight before removing front shocks. That if I feel my truck pull to one side I might have to remove the shocks and lock the wheel straight and reassemble ? Am confused . The only thing I think is the tension of the twisted shock how I forced it slightly make my truck go right. Do you think I can loosen the top shock bolt enough to be able to turn the shock while on my truck? Could this be the reason why there can be a slight pull?

    Great informative vid for replacement!!!! Might be doing that sooner than planned.
    I just noticed this weekend my 2012 GMC sierra SLE Z71's front drivers side strut was loose at the top nut.
    I got a crecent wrench on the flat spots of the stud (to keep it from spinning when I tightened the nut) but I never really did get the nut to tighten down. I could see where I was definately tightening the nut by all the new clean threads I was exposing on the stud but it never seemed to stop the lateral movement entirely.
    Is that a tell tale sign of strut failure?
    I've got a 4" Rancho lift with Rancho struts. I bought the truck used from my father in law with the lift already on it and from what I remember he put the lift on it soon after he bought it so at 178,000 miles I would guess it might soon be time.
    I just put new tires and wheels on it and had it aligned a couple of months back, is this issue with my strut going to be causing premature tire wear?
    Seen a lot of replacement videos but nothing really describing what I'm experienceing.
    Any help, or advice would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks

      @emilmartinez661 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can. I have a 2015 crew cab sierra 4x4 that I installed a 6" bds lift with an add a leaf option into the rear. Once everything was done and on the ground it still had factory style rake because of the add a leaf. Instead of removing the add a leaf, I replaced the lifted struts provided in the kit with a pair of bilstein 5100's and 6" spacers from the zone lift kit and put the snap ring on the 3rd setting and it leveled it out perfectly. Zone and bds are sister company's and many of their lift kit parts are interchangeable.

    • @MLCIT

      I attempted this today. The junk Rancho Shocks were so rusted, that the OEM lower Spring seat (or cup, depending on where you look) was completely unable to be removed without destroying the shock. I'm not inclined to cut into it with the chances of leaving me without a vehicle if it doesn't go well, either.
      Bilstein does not include this part, and you MUST re-use the OEM part. Almost nobody sells this part, too. It was such an unpleasant experience to spend hours trying to remove the seat that I ended up putting the old shocks back into the springs and am now looking around for the proper part.
      Apparently, Bilstein knows this is common and still won't fabricate and supply a $5 part for these shocks. Make sure you have insurance by finding this part first.

      @dylansmith4576 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MLCIT did you ever find a solution to this issue? i have the exact same problem. the stock application seems to weld the bottom plate to the strut itself. a new oem comes with the plate welded on already too.

    • @MLCIT
      @MLCIT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dylan Smith, I was able to remove the part. Bilstein actually answered me via email and said they aren't welded on. They said to specifically use a dead blow hammer and apply heat. I never needed a dead blow until now, but worked.
      Took a while, but one side came off fairly quick and the other was a massive pain. The part that really stunk was getting it all back I to place. I had to do more disassembly. Notably the upper control arm, which was a frustrating task itself, as everyone claims it's easy, but mine required a lot of force with a pry bar.

      @AaronHinesAuto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you need them done ASAP they will do the job. From my personal experiences with Monroe, They seem to last about a year of normal use before they go bad. The truck will become bouncy and the shock observer will not be up in spring oscillations like they should. Kind of like a boat feeling. Most of the shocks that I replace are on fleet vehicles. Most of the vehicles are always towing and are under heavy conditions and the Monroe shocks just don’t stand up to the needs of those trucks

      Yes. The 2 bolts that I remove to remove the control arm go through them. When you purchase a new control arm, they come with new bushings

      yes, those were oem struts with a 2'' spacer. the bilstein 5100 shocks are ride height adjustable up to 2''. so the spacer was no longer needed.

    How do you know if your struts are bad will your truck feel bouncy in the front and will your truck sit kinda low in the front also??

    • @AaronHinesAuto
      @AaronHinesAuto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your truck will feel bouncey and will feel like you are on a boat. If your trucks ride heigh sits low, that is due to your springs being worn. Springs Control ride height and stocks control spring oscillations (bouncey feeling)

    • @randomguy909
      @randomguy909 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a 2010 Silverado and I purchased the Bilstein leveling front struts. I installed the first strut without an issue although the second I used an impact to secure the strut shaft nut and it snapped the thread right off. Looking at the snapped-off thread, the material appears to be cast metal. Stock strut torque is 38 ft-lbs and the Bilstein is only 19. I didn't have an issue with them not honoring the warranty although I sent the strut to them through the seller and after two weeks they sent the strut back to me in the same condition. They didn't even ask if I wanted the strut fixed, and they told me they could fix it although I would have to go through the seller. F-upped. Now you cant even find the 6112 for 2010 so I ended up purchasing the 6112 leveling kit for 2014. The difference is about 9/16 in either direction shortage, all other aspects are the same. Fox leveling shocks work from 2007 to 2018 Silverado's. The 2014 kit has a different thread metal. I'm going to have the metal inspected and I hope Bilstein didn't use an inferior metal on the 6112 series. Bilstein is discontinuing the 6112.

    Watched this video twice and had the knowledge to do this myself. Just wish I had paid attention that it was on a 2wd and mine was 4wd. Top end of strut hung up between drive shaft and tie rod. A lot of wiggling to keep from taking anything else off.
