    I had this exact type of lock on my bike when it got stolen. From the pieces I found on the ground by the bike rack, I don't think this is what they used - one of the metal plates on the main body looked like it had been sheared through. Luckily, I caught them selling my bike on craigslist almost a month later, and was able to recover it with the help of the police.

    Would a heavy duty nut splitter break a hardened shackle or split a lock body?

  • @stephencresswell4760
    @stephencresswell4760 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I just don’t see how this design of lock can ever be strong enough to withstand a nut splitter.

    • @OGSontar
      @OGSontar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not entirely sure of that, however I suspect the question really is cost vs. strength. For example, if all the rivets were solid high-carbon steel hardened and tempered. Or perhaps had a free-spinning sleeve around the rivet. I believe you could ramp it up until it required the nut splitter design to be specifically customized for the task.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sontar, you would have to garden and temper the rivet after installation, which would be difficult.

    • @OGSontar
      @OGSontar 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, hadn't considered that. Peening over a hardened rivet would be a challenge indeed. Really though, after watching you and others go through locks like a hot knife through butter, I think I'll stick with the tried and true security systems - provided by 'Very Large Rottie with an Attitude', a locally sourced green and renewable (self-replicating if you're not careful) defense method.

    • @two_tier_gary_rumain
      @two_tier_gary_rumain 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rivets on this one aren't even solid. In fact, with the holes through the middle of them, you could probably drill them out.

    • @Shorjok
      @Shorjok 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the links were totally flush with each other and had just huge overbuilt rivets then they'd stand a better chance. Hard to say whether or not it'd make them splitter proof though.

      A hydraulic hose could protect such lock, so other tools would be needed to cut it. There are also protective sleeves for hydraulic hoses, they alone would slow down some types of attack. Both hoses and sleeves are very affordable. They can be defeated, maybe even fast, but they are exceptional now. It's always better if a thief must use many tools instead of one quick attack.
