  • Ford Fiesta ST Facelift Review: Killed By The i20N?
Quite some time, I drove the Mk8 Ford Fiesta ST, and I saw it was good. A lot has changed in the world since then, and although the STs competition has dwindled, one part of the world didn’t get the memo - South Korea. The i20N is the stiffest competition the little Fast Ford has seen for quite some time, so can the Ford Fiesta ST Facelift keep itself in the game?
To help keep the i20N at bay, the new Fiesta ST is packing more torque from its 1.5-litre turbocharged three-pot. The old car offered 290Nm, whereas the new version betters that with 320Nm. For those of you wondering, the 0-62 is the same 6.5 seconds as it was before. The idea is that the mid-range torque is improved, instead offering a stronger pull right off the line.
Another key change for the facelift - apart from the exterior looks which I will get on to later - is the introduction of the new seats. The Recaros of old are gone, and in their place - much like the new Focus ST - there are seats made in-house by the Ford Performance team.
They are brilliant to sit in and perhaps a bit more accommodating for a broader frame than the Recaro but not perfect. It could just be poor muscle memory, but I’m sure these sit higher than the Recaros in the pre-facelift. Having said that, it doesn’t detract from the driving experience.

Whilst I agree it’s good to be as impartial as possible, your love for the car is not a lack of impartiality. You were given that smile and love for it due to how it reacts on the road. If you don’t get the same fizz from the i20N, it means something and it makes it worth the money to me. Great video though!

The clincher for the fiesta is its tunability a stage one map alone will take it to 240 bhp with reputable tuners like mountune, revo, collins or dreamscience and no problems with reliability in fact like the mk7, the mk8 has proved very reliable even after tuning.

Add a relatively cheap short shifter (Mountune) to the FiST and the gear changes are so accurate and smooth. This mod is well worth doing for a subtle but noticeable difference every time you drive it!
I hear (on good authority) that the 'new' FP seats side bolsters get in the way of your arm when changing gear - is this correct?

    • @CarObsession

Hi there, sorry for the delayed response. I don't recall having any issues changing gear, but they are more awkward to get in and out of due to the steep bolsters for the legs. Thanks for watching.

I got one, and quite honestly I didn't even consider the i20N. I wanted an ST since the previous gen but the stars didn't align at the time. I think it's great. I'm loving it.
I keep saying this like a broken record but, I owned a CTR EP3 when I was young and the ST reminds me of the fun I had in that car while being a competent daily if it needs be. The EP3 was spartan single minded affair, although at the time it was my daily driver. But, as I said. I was young back then. 🤣
    Cheers from Italy.

I'm awaiting my i20N, which I'm hoping I'll get this year. I may have purchased an ST if they were still available here in Australia, cause I like character. That said, I think the i20N is the better looking car and represents better value for money. Plus, I plan to drive mine on a track, which suits it better than it does the ST, which ain't quite as track-focused.

There was an ST2 available for the first short while before they moved on solely to ST3 builds to complete orders, which is what im driving. Doesn't have the launch control, matrix LED lights, red brake callipers, slip diff and digital dash but mostly driving in the city as a daily none of that matters personally. Worked out a little cheaper and i would have gone with the ST3 personally but the wife wanted to keep the cost down whilst still paying for the mean green paint job 😂

I've got a new ST in mean green. I was told it was one of the last 1s available and i took delivery of it in march. I considered the i20n and took 1 for a test drive. They are very comparable in everyday driving. If you like a small(ish) hot hatch you'll probably be happy with either. But Hyundai were awful to deal with. Calls not returned, woeful part ex offered for my '19 Golf R and they were just weren't interested in making a sale. Ford were very different. They couldn't do enough for me so i went with the ST and I love it. A bargain at £225 a month interest free which was way cheaper than the i20 too! Make no mistake, its a toy. If you want a practical car you maybe should think twice. The ride at low speed is jarring and its drinks fuel like my golf did (so much for the smaller car to save fuel idea 😂). It costs a whole 30p a month less to insure too. But once the road opens up its just brilliant. The only downside is the lack of straight-line speed but I'm used to 300+ bhp so maybe I'm being unfair here. I usually keep a car for 2 to 3 years before swapping it for a new 1. I think I'll keep the ST and buy it outright at the end of my PCP. These things are a future classic, they're that good. My favourite quote on it comes from a friend who was in it as i was enthusiasticly driving it along a winding B road..... "F**** me, no fiesta has any business being this f****** fast" said through gritted teeth. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

@@danielet123 Very difficult to say... If I was doing more track work I'd say i20N.

@@danielet123 I pick i20N (and use it als daily car) Why: 4 cyliders vs 3 (in Fiesta), better sound, better and faster in corners (i20N have pure mechanical div!), more space (specially in 2 row of seats), larger side mirros and good rear visibility, much more drive custom options (4 factory mod + 2 customs mods with 5x3 options each). But you will have a lot of fun with i20N or Fiesta ST, both are super fun cars.

@@marekb3885 Thank you very much! I honestly don't think there is so much difference between the two in terms of speed. As for the sound, the I20 sounds more but the Fiesta sounds with much better quality. Perhaps to go to the track the I20 is more prepared, but let's be honest, how many of you go to the track? However, for a mountain section the Fiesta seems to me more fun and adjustable than the I20. Both are two great cars and really very fun, but from my point of view the Fiesta seems to me a more special car and in terms of design, I find it much more attractive. The I20 especially in its back does not convince me at all. I keep the ST because I think it's a more balanced car in general, and I think it has a better engine. And as a Ford brand it gives me more tranquillity than the Korean one.

Nah the Fiesta ST is better. More practical, better looking, better seats, sunroof, more daily dribeable.... if you want a trackfocused car you gotta buy something else not a 25k 200bhp car (buy a gr yaris or know your place imo) Fiesta is clear in my opinion.

The thing with the fiesta ST is in five years time it will still be a fast ford that’s fun and brilliant to drive😊 the i20n will be stuck at the back of the Hyundai garage because the parts are impossible to get hold of after it’s fell apart!

What makes you think the Hyundai would fall apart? Also, why would the parts be impossible to get hold off?

Learn to drive? Wow. I passed first time with only 3 minors I'll have you know... I could steer the car fine (I had NO issues), the seat was set to its LOWEST and the steering wheel was set to its HIGHEST 🤷‍♂️.

There is nothing wrong with his driving position. There is no foot rest for the clutch foot in this car, so your left foot when it isn’t on the clutch is flat on the floor.
