    These two ODs are classics. They've been around forever, used by many, and highly copied. Do you like one over the other?

      SD-1 just has somethin' more to it. You can hear it, like fuller sound. Cant explain.

  • @phantasmagora6542
    @phantasmagora6542 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    The SD-1 has more attack but the TS-9 has more body. In a live situation the SD-1 will help the guitar cut through better by keeping it out of the way of the lower frequencies. In a studio situation the TS-9 is great for adding a touch of drive (and mids) to a fat metal tone.

    • @LeeKirkman88
      @LeeKirkman88 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with this statement or if you have a bright amp at home the ts9 can help with some of the low and mids. I have a tube amp thats quite bright and its not a high distortion amp and i always use the ts9 with it. And if you go crazy you can make it chug at lower volume. which isn't possible without the ts9.

    • @phantasmagora6542
      @phantasmagora6542 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LeeKirkman88 Yeah the SD-1 adds brightness and also cuts a shitload of lows. The TS-9 also cuts lows, but not as much as the stock SD-1 (I think the Waza Custom mode fixes this somewhat), which makes it better for recording chuggy rhythm guitars IMO

    Had a decent number of different ODs through the years, but SD-1 always found its way back on the board. Nowadays it doesn't leave my pedalboard and it's here to stay.

    This is a cool channel which i did not know before seeing your Dimebag Collection video. I am jealous, believe me..
    Both pedals sound pretty similar using it as a booster, even for guitar nerds it is very hard, if not almost impossible to tell which pedal is on. But shootout contest videos prove one thing: It does not really matter, which one of them you actually use.

    I own an MXR Sugar Drive which I’ve owned for about 10 years and I love it but I’ve also been very curious about these 2 pedals for a long time so I just ordered myself an SD-1 to see what differences I can find between the 2 and perhaps in a few months I’ll get a TS9. Great video man.

    I have the boss and like it. I use to have the Ibanez and sold it when I gave up my tube amp. I recently bought a new blues junior and I think that I will get the Ibanez again. I agree with your summary that it is a little warmer than the boss. I will keep the Boss as well it can't be beat for the money .

    I used a TS9 in front of an over driven marshall 100w for years. Sounded great. Level slammed and just a tickle of drive. Now I use an SD1 and it’s just as good, but there’s a lot more gain on tap if you want it.
    The SD1 is a hotter pedal in general.

    there are two differences between the two pedals.. assymterical clipping (SD1), symmertical clipping (TS9),, The drive on the SD1 has more uneven harmonics making it a bit more "amp-like" in the overdrive character and a bit more raspy with increased drive,, has slightly more drive than the TS9.
    The other difference in the tone knob..Both pedals are mid focused and cuts bottom and highs,, but the tone knob on the SD1 sweeps more from low mids to high mids.. The TS9 is more a traditional high cut knob.. with knobs at noon the TS9 lets through more high bass,, the SD1 cuts a lot of bass att noon.. you need to roll the tone knob down around 10.30 (clock) to more match the tone on the TS9.

    Interesting thing... The Behringer Vintage Tube Overdrive sounds like the older version of the TS9, the TS808 I think, it's smoother, and remembers the on/off state. Only costs 40 bucks Canadian. 😊

  • @pitthefrit6292
    @pitthefrit6292 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The Behringer tube overdrive TO-100 and the TS9 sound exactly the same, it is impossible to hear any difference in a blind test. Get one of those, if you find it. I did, and I could not be happier with the results. I use it as a booster in front of a Randall Rg80ES. I think it even looks pretty good, and there is nothing to complain about , besides it is not that easy to change batteries. I can live with that. There is of course nothing wrong with the original pedal, but market prices for vintage TS9 Pedals are crazy. Even for the ugly TS10. That can easily be 30 times more as a Behringer clone would cost.

    • @TheTwangKings
      @TheTwangKings 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree, the Behringer is a real goodie. For the money, it sounds amazing, and to my ears not as harsh as the TS-9.

      SD-1 has twice as much gain available so even if you removed the extra clipping diode it can be more saturated. On the other had the SD-1 has a lower minimum gain as well.

  • @Mister_Greg
    @Mister_Greg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Spend less on the SD-1 and change a few parts to make it sound like a TS9. There are tutorials out there to convert it to a TS9 which are quite involved. In actuality you don’t need to change as many parts to capture the essence of the TS9. If you leave the corner frequency of the first low pass filter at 880 Hz instead of dropping it down to 720 Hz, much of the cut will remain in tact. You might also elect to keep the asymmetrical clipping which will provide more output.
    - Change C2 to 0.1uF (more low end)
    - Change R7 to 1k (EQ scaling)
    - Change C4 to 0.18uF (EQ scaling, keep 880 Hz low pass; change to 0.22uF for 720 Hz)
    - Change R9 to 1k (EQ scaling)
    - Remove C6 (Tames the harshness of the SD-1; no longer necessary)
    - Change R8 to 220 (TS9 tone control)
    - Change C5 to 0.22uF (TS9 tone control)
    If you switch to symmetrical clipping:
    - Short D6
    - Change R5 to 51k
    - Add 1M across the gain control
    - Add 51pF across D4

    This is very, very unexpected! In pure sound, the sd-1 feels clearly angrier and brighter than the ts9, after which I do not understand why on high-gain everything is exactly the opposite, the sd-1 sounds cool, but cool as at a rehearsal, concert or at home. TS9 on high-gain sounds like on a studio album of your favorite heavy band, and not like a rehearsal... And it's a pity. I don't like ibanez, I like the appearance of the sd-1 much more, and its accessibility. It's very sad to realize that on high-gain it clearly blew =((

  • @nemesis8626
    @nemesis8626 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The thing is, it doesn't really matter if the boss is half the price, if you fully want the best tone you can get it is worth paying out as a one off to get the pedal that sounds better, also behringers are literally a copy of boss pedals, which they sell cheaper than boss, because they use slightly cheaper casing and the hardware they keep on site at there company, unlike boss who ship in, therefore costing them more money to make in the long run, it's actually really interesting if you look into that, I'm sure behringer probably have a copy of that pedal for half the price of that even so shouldn't they be mentioned in this also?
