      Similar experience here. It was my first pedal decades ago, moved on to all the fancy drive pedals, recently got another sd1 and have vowed to never sell it, because even if I am not using it for a season, I’ll want it again, and I won’t get enough in trade for it to be worth trading :-)

    Boss does a lot of things incorrectly, but their overdrive pedals are very nice. Their original ones from back in the day are great, too. It gives you that perfect thick AC/DC rhythm crunch, if that's your thing. If that's the sound you desire, then Boss overdrive pedals are for you.

    Boss pedals are without a doubt the greatest pedals available. Sure there are other great pedals out there, but nothing that offers so much for so little. Silent switching, excellent buffers ( for the most part) and quality sounds that are simple to achieve. I’ve been down the boutique road only to find that Boss did it well after all. I only wish they had a transparent drive like the Klon or Soul Food.

But eversince I picked up an SD1 it has been on (one of) my boards because it's just a no frills, set and forget pedal that just sounds good. BOSS stuff just does what it says on the tin. When this world ends, all they will find is Keith, a Tele, the Edge's famous AC30 and Boss pedals.

    Great review and good point about the difference between the TS9 and the SD1. Boss pedals stack really well with other Boss pedals. If you really want to get the Hammer Of Thor thump out of the SD1, then stack it with a Boss Graphic EQ7 pedal. It's of the hook. TS9 is more mid rangey for sure, but SD1 is definitely warmer.

    I just got the SD 1 on 12-24-19. I specified the date so you can know it is a recent pedal and not " so called " older vintage units". This pedal screams the blues or rock!! Definite tube amp tone on the edge of a smooth, creamy break up. I used a tube amp. Volume low. Pedal settings were : drive low , volume on pedal fairly high. I recommend this pedal!!!

    It's such a rich, juicy tone. I like and use it more than my more expensive overdrives (Way Huge, Fender, etc). I even like it more than my ts9..its just the ts9 gets used more because it pairs with everything. But if I want a bluesy-rock lead tone other than the one from my amp, that's my go to.

    Just to be clear for the people watching. The SD-1 that your favorite guitarists are using are probably the older ones that sound better then a new SD-1. That being said this is my main OD and I am very happy with it. I just hate it when someone says things like this dude to sell pedals. You could say the same about the tube screamer, but there is a big difference between a new TS808 and an original.

    Not very mids focussed? Wrong. It was Boss's answer to the Tubescreamer. If you want a flat EQ drive get the OD3. Both are wonderful industry standard pedals from Boss. My advice - buy both and stack em. Kick SD1 on for solos 🌴

    Many famous guitarists used this pedal but switched to Tube Screamer eventually. I assume it's a lack of bass.It really does cut a lot of low frequencies unfortunately

    • @singleproppilot

      That’s one of the best things about it for certain uses. Less bass = tighter distortion.

    I’ve been trying to dethrone my Boss OD-1X since I got it, and nothing compares. My Fulltones, Suhrs, VSs, MXRs, etc don’t even hold a candle. I don’t have an SD-1 yet, so I’ll have to see how it compares.

      Any update on this matter?

    • @OnAir21
      @OnAir21 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Saint Jabroni Yes. As I moved through various different tube amp brands and models, my Fulltone OCD V1.7 became the most consistent and dynamic overdrive in my array. The OCD is not as smooth as the Boss OD-1X is, but finds a suitable voice in any amp I put behind it making it easy for me to work with. The OD-1X either goes from amazing to an unsalvageable ‘meh’ when I change amps. Also worth noting, I feed a Wampler Ego compressor and Boss GE-7 (stock) into my overdrives, and also have an Xotic EP Booster at the end of my direct in chain. I couldn’t find meaning in this world without those three pedals coloring everything in the middle.
