What If Sabah was recovered by the Philippines: Exploring the Economic Impact

  • Today, we delve into an intriguing question: What if Sabah was recovered by the Philippines? How would it have impacted the Philippine economy? Let's imagine the possibilities and explore the potential outcomes.
The Historical Context]To understand the significance of Sabah's recovery, let's delve into the historical context.
Sabah, located in the southern part of the Philippines, was historically part of the Philippines and owned by the Sultanate of Sulu, who's a Filipino.
However, it is currently under the administration of Malaysia.
    Weird, right?
    So, how did that happen?
The story begins during the era of European colonization in Southeast Asia.
In the late 1800s, the British North Borneo Company established a presence in the region, including the territory now known as Sabah. The company rented the place from the Sultanate of Sulu.
Fast forward to 1963 when Sabah, along with Sarawak and Singapore, formed the Federation of Malaysia.
During the period led by President Diosdado Macapagal, the Philippines made efforts to reclaim Sabah, asserting its historical connection to the Sultanate of Sulu, which held claims over the region.
In an interesting twist, the government of Malaysia had been making payments to the Sultanate of Sulu as rent for the land they occupied.
However, tensions arose when the descendants of the Sultan of Sulu demanded an increase in the rental fees, as they deemed the previous amount of 5,000 US dollars per year to be too low.
The Malaysian government, reluctant to continue paying rent, declined the increased fees proposed by the Sultanate of Sulu.
This disagreement escalated the dispute and led to diplomatic negotiations and the involvement of international courts, further straining relations between the Philippines and Malaysia.
The Philippine government argued that the transfer of Sabah from the British to Malaysia was illegal, emphasizing the Philippines' rightful claim to the territory.
This complex situation gave rise to prolonged discussions and legal proceedings aimed at finding a resolution to the Sabah dispute.
The differing historical interpretations and political considerations have contributed to the ongoing tensions and challenges in the relationship between the Philippines and Malaysia regarding the ownership of Sabah.
Now, let's refocus our attention on the topic at hand.
If the Philippines were to regain control over Sabah, a scenario that holds hope for the future, it would undoubtedly have a profound and transformative impact on the country's economic landscape.
History of the conflict by TH-cam Channel, Hindsight.

Philippines would never get Sabah. People of Sabah has spoken and agreed to be with malaysia in 1963. Sulu sultan never rule Sabah. It's was the pirates who work for sulu sultan that actually control eastern Sabah sea, built pirate bases and terrorizing eastern Sabah native. These pirates claim to be the followers of sultan sulu. Brunei never give Sabah to sulu sultan. Brunei already ceded whole Sabah to Overbeck in 1877 but because these pirates of sulu sultan roam eastern Sabah built bases there so Overbeck need another agreement in 1878 to guaranteed his future company safe passage to eastern Sabah. So the 1878 agreement was signed between Overbeck and sulu sultan. It was cession not lease agreement. And agreement to aquire land that is not belong to sulu sultan at the first place.

Philippines are peaceful people. Same as Malaysia and their neighboring Indonesia. They are simply brothers that have some petty quarrels but that doesn't mean they dont love and respect each other. They will pursue what best for their people without staining their relationship.

WHY DID BRUNEI GIVE SABAH TO THE PHILIPPINES ⁉️
This was during the period when the Sultanate was in its 'golden era'. In 1658, the Sultan of Brunei ceded the northern and eastern portion of Borneo to the Sultanate of Sulu in compensation for the latter's help in settling the Brunei Civil War in the Brunei Sultanate. 🇵🇭🙏🏻🇧🇳

The Philippines claims Sabah on the basis that Sabah was said to be once under Sulu. Sulu only claimed that Sabah was given by Brunei to Sulu as a gift for purportedly helping Brunei fight rebels. But Brunei refuted this claim and denied ever having given Sabah to Sulu. Malaysia never pay "rent" but officially termed as "cession money". But in actuality it was just merely a token consolation for heirs of former Sultan of Sulu.
It it was "rent", show any "rent agreement" document that the name of the country "Malaysia" written in it.
Sulu only claimed that North Borneo (Sabah) was given by Brunei to Sulu as a gift for purportedly helping Brunei fight rebels. But Brunei refuted this claim and denied ever having given North Borneo (Sabah) to Sulu. There was NO DOCUMENT regarding the transfer of ownership of Sabah from Brunei to Sulu signed by both Sultans.
In fact on 22 July 1878, the then Sultan of Sulu had relinquished all his possession and the sovereignty of Sulu and it's territories including North Borneo (Sabah) which Sulu claimed to Spain. The Sultanate of Sulu only remained as hereditary cultural and traditional entity without any sovereign territory. Then in 1885, to resolve overlapping issue on North Borneo (Sabah) and other issues involving other islands, Britain, Spain and Germany arrived to an agreement known as Madrid Protocol in which Spain surrendered North Borneo (Sabah) to Britain. What ever happened to North Borneo (Sabah) after that was under British jurisdiction.

That is a false narrative created by the self-proclaimed Sulu heirs. North Borneo (Sabah) previously belonged to Brunei before they ceded the entire territory to the British under the 1877 agreement, in the agreement it clearly states that North Borneo will be ceded to the British North Borneo Company (BNBC). However the Sultan of Sulu came along and falsely claims that North Borneo belongs to them, and to avoid a possible war in the region the British enter the 1878 agreement with the Sulu Sultanate which states that Sulu will grant and cede North Borneo to the BNBC which was the original meaning of “pajak” and was agreed as such by both the British and the Sulu Sultan however the Sulu heirs of the now defunct Sulu Sultanate then twisted the original meaning and claims that the word pajak actually means “lease and rent”. The British then agreed to pay 5,000 Mexican gold coins annually to the Sultan of Sulu as cession money for North Borneo but the self-proclaimed Sulu heirs twisted the narrative yet again and claims that the payment is “rent money”.

The real sulu sultanate are not filipino..its an oxymoron..they are independent kindgdom but later are annex by the american with military force to be included into the philipines republic..so the so called claim they somehow agree to join the republic of the philipines its wrong.

Malaysia will not give it back, so war is the only way, don't prolong the arbitral ruling, it is complex and complicated, even though the world knows that Sabah was just seized and grabbed.

"...the world knows that Sabah was just seized and grabbed"? Only some Filipinos say that, not the world. In fact the sovereignty of Sabah and Sarawak as component states of Malaysia is recognised internationally and recognized by the United Nations. This was confirmed and clearly stated in the United Nations Malaysia Mission Report "Final Conclusion of the Secretary-General", 14 September 1963. The last sentence of the report says:
"I fervently hope that the people of these territories will achieve progress and, and find their fulfillment as component states of Malaysia".
Full text of the report can even be accessed from the Philippines Government Gazette website.
