Escape From Sabah

  • We’ve heard the stories time and time again: people forced to make a choice between staying in their hometown where there is very little economic opportunity, and leaving family to make money elsewhere.
Across Asia, countless people have faced this decision, and often decide that supporting the family from abroad is the best option. This is especially the case in the Philippines, where one of the biggest contributors to the economy is through remittances - money sent home by Filipinos working outside the country.
On this special episode of Assignment Asia, CCTV’s Barnaby Lo follows one woman, Sam, as she travels from Sabah, Malaysia back home to the southern Philippines - an emotional journey that, she says, will be her last.

Sabah adalah sebuah negeri dgn penduduknya yg berbilang kaum bangsa dan agama...hidup aman dgn sifat sentiasa saling memahami dan menghormati satu sama lain... walaupun keamanan hidup berbilang kaum ini sentiasa di gugat oleh pihak2 tertentu yg cuba meraih kemenangan monopoli dlm sesuatu hal...Harapan saya sebagai Sabahan semoga seluruh warga SABAH tanpa mengira perbezaan agama dan bangsa sentiasa sedar dan waspada agar tidak mudah utk hanyut dgn sentimen perkauman yg cuba ditanam oleh pihak2 tertentu... hargai perjuangan para pejuang lampau dgn mengekalkan keamanan yg Kita nikmati sekarang.

I once hired several Filipinos from Palawan to build my little house. Most are Cagayans. These men are really proud of their homeland and of being a Filipina. At the same time they had nothing nice to say about the life condition there. Nothing at all.
Life in the Philippines should be more humane and civilized for these great and skillful labourers to return.
They deserved a happier and comfortable daily life like other citizens of countries with large population.
Poor but happy, free from threats and confrontation. This is the way of life that they lead in Sabah.

Just a correction - not all parts of the Philippines have people living in inhumane conditions, but I would agree with you on the southwestern parts of the Philippines - & I went in those places myself. This is one of the reasons why I don't like my country recapturing Sabah. It's the central government system that will damage the economic independence Sabah has due to its being a state. It's another burden to our economy. I would say let the Sabahans decide which country they want to be in

But this type of documentary isnt really helping them pkus it'll make it even worse for both illegal immigrants likewise to the original local native's people. Its like, This type of documentary is without a doubt supporting and rooting for the illigal immigrants to come here in sabah freely.
This is no where near how to solve the problem. We do pity them but we also have our own family to feed. These immigrants keeps coming even more everyday, taking up all of the job that supposed to be ours as the local native's people to begin with. In this 21st century, any attempt by any individual to claim other people’s territory as a state belonging to him should be treated merely as a black comedy.
This is particularly so since the so-called Sultan is merely one of several pretenders who have no land to call their own kingdom and whose position has no legal standing in their own country.
Finally, everyone should take note that in 2001 the International Court of Justice (ICJ) rejected the attempt by the Philippines to intervene in the case between Malaysia and Indonesia citing that they had a legal interest in the matter before the court.
The sentiment of the court was reflected by Judge Ad Hoc Frank who wrote, in his separate judgment: “Modern international law does not recognize the survival of a right to sovereignty based solely on historic title; not in any event after an exercise of self determination conducted (in Sabah in 1962) in accordance with the requisites of international law, the bona fides of which has received international recognition by the political organs of the United Nations. Against this, historic claims and pre colonial titles are mere relics of another international legal era, one that ended with the setting of the sun on the age of colonial imperium”.

It is a porous border since ancient times. Remember, this was one kingdom before the spanish and the british were in the Philippines and Sabah respectively. The documentary touches on this but lacks in depth to explain these historical ties between these areas. To them, most specially the Badjaos, there are no modern borders, just cultural and economic relations of families. The only solution for people to stay in their respective places is progress and livelihood. If there is business sufficient enough to generate a decent living, there will only be tourists and not migrants.

But I respectfully side with idea that migrants are badly needed by developed countries. Almost all developed nations are opening their doors to all highly skilled workers/professionals for their aging populations.
I guess, the only problem in this case is that these people are low-skilled workers but nonetheless, cheap labor is still good for the economy.

Any pro Sulu or PH claims on North Borneo, their primal source of reference will be the Sulu and British North Borneo Company (BNBC) agreement dated 22 January 1878. In this agreement, Sulu “lease” North Borneo to BNBC (Tausug version) while the English version is “grant and cede”. This information will easily be cherry picked in any of their discussion or debate.
But what they will not revealed are those that can refute their claim. The followings are few of the information that had been kept secret:
Firstly, the agreement between Sultan Brunei and BNBC on 29 December 1877 over North Borneo which is 3 weeks earlier than the agreement between Sultan Sulu and BNBC (22 January 1878). This will deny that North Borneo was a gift to Sulu from Brunei.
Secondly, on 22nd July 1878, Sultan Sulu relinquished his sovereignty on Sulu Archipelago and its dependencies thereof to Spain (Bases of Peace and Capitulation agreement).
Thirdly, on the same day, 22 July 1878, Sultan Sulu wrote to Governor General of Philippines and Governor of Sulu terminating the 22/1/1878 agreement between Sulu Sultanate and BNBC. Thus, the agreement is null and void.
Fourthly, on 24th July 1878, Governor of Sulu wrote to BNBC concerning the Spanish sovereignty on Sulu and its dependencies including North Borneo and the termination of the 1878 agreement.
Fifthly, Governor General of Philippines wrote a letter on the same matter dated 20th August 1878 to the Spanish Government in Madrid.
Sixthly, finally, the issues on the agreement between Sultan Sulu and BNBC and the status of North Borneo was settled through the Madrid Protocol (7th March 1885). North Borneo belongs to the British under this Protocol.
The above documents are kept either in Public Record Office in London or General Archives in Madrid. It can also be accessible from the Philippines official website with Spanish to English translation.
In addition, during the US colonization of PH, 2 agreements (Carter 1899 and Carpenter 1915) were signed by the Sultanate of Sulu which relinquished its temporal sovereignty of Sulu and its dependencies. Later, the 1930 Anglo-US border agreement acknowledge the boundary delimitation between PH and North Borneo that belongs to the British.

Bring back Sabah to Philippines so that illegal migrants can live freely. Malaysian can remain their citizenship and live peacefully with other nationalities and Philippine Police and Military can now take over the jurisdiction and they are not brutal just like Malaysian Police.

Sabah belongs to sabahans . I do agree there are some sulu natives that live in Sabah, and some of them are my friends. However, Sultan Sulu has no right over sabah. During the Japan and British invasion where is the so called sultan? cowardly flee and abandon their people. so don't tell us sabah is yours. we develop the country and our grandfathers defend it with their blood.
