Hi everyone. Here the recording of my first Q & A on Facebook. You cannot believe how nervous I was. When I edit for TH-cam I am able to delete all the pauses, the mispronunciations and mostly my overused words like 'Umm', 'just, and 'so'. Thank you to everyone that showed up. I loved from how near and far everyone is. Please ask away in the comments so I can use your questions for the next Q & A.

Very informative. And perfectly imperfect! By this I mean you show us you are one of us and we can definitely learn from you. You aren't arrogant. You love what you do and it comes through in your videos. Thanks for imparting your knowledge and I look forward to learning lots more from you and others through these videos and comments. We are never to old to learn. Until next video! Quilt on! 😊👍✂️🧷🧵

Me too. I shop from my stash first and usually do not need anything else. I have a very eclectic fabric haul. My friends are always welcome to raid my stash. Most of the time they need 1/2 yd. of something or one of my hundreds of fats quarters or a small piece for an art quilt. I am always glad to help because most of them are on retirement budgets.

I too am not on FB, so thank you for posting, because I did learn a few new things! :) Thanks for putting yourself out there. You make it look easier that it is I'm sure. I love the practical advice especially about how to make quilts for the receiver. My MIL made magnificent quilts with fine hand quilting for all the children and grandchildren, but they were mostly what she liked making with a little input from us about pattern or color. We are very grateful to have our quilts, but they don't get every day use. Love you mug and shirt/scarf!!

Love your videos!! Thanks for doing a Q&A (and for Taylor’s help), sorry I missed it live! I really appreciate how you were specific about making a quilt for what people actually want, even getting them involved in the process. I made a double wedding ring that I thought my nephew and his niece would like but sadly I don’t think they did and I wanted it to be a surprise. However I did make a baby quilt and asked the mom-to-be for her input and to be part of the process and that was very well received. I like how you just spelled it out, I really wasn’t “getting it” as much until now. You have a gift for doing this, thanks for sharing all your quilty tips, techniques and life lessons. 🤗❤️❤️

Great Q & A session. I have a giant 24 x 36 inch cutting board and a 20 1/2 inch square ruler that I use for squaring up my quilts. I do it on my kitchen counter and it works great. I start with one corner and then I can also add a 6 x 24 inch ruler along the side and butt it up to the square ruler for accuracy. I have found with long experience that squaring up at every stage - each block, each row, etc. makes a huge difference in the outcome of your quilt. TFS.

There was one i saw at the library (3 dimensional paper piecing)I didn't the title and now it is gone. Surely someone might be interest in a web site or TH-cam site on how to locate quilting books. Karen, you did a wonderful job. You have a wealth of knowledge on a wide variety of topics and I really enjoy listening to what you have to say about all of them. I have been quilting for a number of years, but I always look for new ways to do things. I just have one small piece of advice for future live videos, look into the camera at your audience. You have beautiful eyes and we want to see them. Not sure how you are set up, if you have multiple cameras, as I only watch on TH-cam. Keep being the REAL you, stutters and all. Makes me feel like I am talking with my friend and not a scripted lecture. Love it!!!

Just Get it Done Quilts: I noticed that, too, and tried to relate. I myself am not good at making eye contact but had to force myself to get better at it when I began to do music at church. We are a very small congregation in a pretty small space. As song leader, I try to "rove" back and forth across the congregation looking directly at individuals vs. the old Dale Carnegie trick of looking over peoples' heads toward the back of the room. Maybe you can think of your viewers as your "congregation" and move your eye contact back & forth between cameras with a little blip explaining the use of two cameras so viewers understand we are part of a multi-platform broadcast.

Haha. I love your videos. I’ve started making scrap quilts for new babies. Once I find out what they are having I send my friends a dm and ask if it’s okay for me to make their baby something (so far everyone has said yes. Haha) I was basically putting pieces together and making it a surprise but your videos have opened my eyes to just how much can be done with quilting. I’m slowly becoming addicted. Haha. Anywho. Thank you so much for you videos. 🙏

You have been a great inspiration and a awesome teacher thank you so much for your videos it has taught me how not to waste time and how to set up a craft room sorta in a one-bedroom apartment. I love your comments on selling quilts and color zones. The first time I had someone ask me to make them a quilt, that they would pay me for, I couldn't figure out how much to charge. I started asking the customer questions not about how much she was willing to spend, but about the patterns and the colors she was interested in. It turned out that her color zone was autumnal colors, golds, pumpkins, orange, rust, bowns etc. If she'd simply wanted a really tiny quilt using those colors, I could probably have struggled through doing something for her. But a big quilt where I'd have to spend a great deal of time working with colors that I really don't like, I couldn't manage. Imagine spending hours and hours cringing away from the fabric you're sewing. Shudder

That said, this was great- I'm a new subscriber- hey, made your stash buster baby quilt- didn't come out as good as yours- and it took me the better part of 5 hours LOL. I'm going to sandwich and quilt it this weekend. Lovely pattern- not as easy as it looks- but excellent for practicing sewing on the bias.

I’m a new quilter and always looking for tips and tricks, and definitely cost savings.
Is it possible to become a good quilter without going to classes and retreats?

I didn't really learn as much at classes as I did from these types of videos and you can watch them over as many times as you like. Angela Walters is a really good place to learn FMQ. Watching her gave me the courage to do instead of trying to be perfect. There are some I don't watch as they are too long. I really like Karen's, Jordan's Fabric, MSQC. You get a lot for not a lot of time. I do watch others as that is how I found Karen who is, as Carmen said, so real.

Thank you for all the videos. I look forward to each one. I enjoyed the posting of the FB live, but actually missed the live broadcast. I"m very interested in the UFO challenge, and always look forward to what's next.

Good job! I thought you handled the "live" aspect just fine :) Regarding cutting: I have found lighting to be important. I have a desk lamp on my cutting table. Seems to really help me see the ruler lines and place them where they need to be!

I do Instagram and youtube. I have to say, I really liked your live. I slept thru unfortunately because the night before my 97-yr-old client fell and we were up all night. So of course, sleep hit me the moment I got home. But the Monday time was great.

I am only 1/2 way through the video and had to comment on retreats. This May/June, I went on a 9000 km road trip from BC to Missouri, then Winnipeg, Sask Stitches and home again. I was gone 4 weeks. I went to the Missouri Star Academy, which was great, Long Arming Workshops with Angela Walters, which were incredible and then a week quilting and bra making at Sask Stitches. The two events in Missouri did not include accommodation, it was more like all day workshops/lectures. I met a woman who lives only 10 miles from my home here in BC, while in a workshop in Hamilton, MO.
Sask Stitches is an incredible event. Sewing, quilting, bra making, spinning, knitting and more over 10 days. You choose the workshops you want to take and the number of nights you want to stay. The event takes place at an Abbey, you stay in the dorms, eat in the dining hall, nice home cooked meals and sew to your heart's content. In the evenings bottles of wine magically appear and you would be surprised how many women travel with wine glasses and bottle openers.
I believe you get out of a retreat what you put into it.

100% agree. Quilters are naturally shy so sometimes it takes that glass of wine to relax a bit. But at some point at the retreat you need to walk around the room and get to know people. That Sask Stitches sounds interesting...looking that up

Half way through watching on TH-cam Karen, Thank you so far for what I have heard and please, please, pretty please do a video on half square triangles! I love the way they look (when they are correct), and I have not been able to get them totally correct yet! It doesn’t help being a left handed and challenged by angles! LOL...

Oh, Karen, what a great video. I do love hearing from you and find your POV so easy to listen to. I'm so very interested in the UFO challenge. How will we learn more about it? I do follow your TH-cam channel and now your Facebook page. I do feel you are a kindred spirit and an older sister who gives such great information. I LOVE your Color Theory series so much that I've watched them several times.
