I've made many recordings of my mixes on the DR-05. You have to adjust the input level on the recorder. I was surprised that you didn't mention that in your example.

I tried to adjust the input level and still no go. This video has just confirmed that this particular recorder is no good.
how can i do that?
if you read the manual anything is possible. in record mode the |>| buttons bring the input level up and down. the + and - buttons are for volume. or it could be the other way around. I always get it mixed up but the point is, there is a way to adjust input. The recorder would be useless without it.

Appreciate the video, mate, but I'm afraid you're mistaken about a couple things on this one:
1.) As an FYI: the signal that's passed to the "Record Out" outputs on the back of your mixer comes directly from the INDIVIDUAL CHANNELS (1,2,3,4) themselves-NOT from the Master output. Said another way: "Record Out" is higher up the food chain, and it gets the signal before the signal gets passed to the Master channel. Thus, your Master volume levels have absolutely no effect whatsoever on a TASCAM (or other device) recording via the "Record Out" outputs. (You could mute the Master, or crank it up to 11 so it clips like crazy-it doesn't matter one bit as far as the recording goes.)
2.) In your video, the reason that your TASCAM was clipping "despite" the Master volume being almost all the way down (which again, is irrelevant) is simply because your channels were running too hot (i.e., clipping, themselves). As you were sending a clipped signal to "Record Out", you should expect the TASCAM to faithfully record that clipped signal as... a clipped signal. If you keep your channels at the top of the greens (and out of the yellows/reds) instead-you'll be right as rain as far as the TASCAM is concerned.
3) Incidentally, a few commenters were correct in pointing out that a hot signal can be attenuated via the TASCAM itself if/when needed (which is hopefully no longer as relevant in your case). The TASCAM unit I used to use (smaller, cheaper) to record my mixes accomplished this via a physical "input level" dial on the side of the unit (next to the 1/8" input). It sounds like it's handled via the on-screen interface on your model.
FWIW, I do recommend attenuating the signal a tad via the TASCAM even if you're being careful to stay in the greens on the mixer's channels. The reason: a weak signal can always be amplified, but a clipped signal can never be "un-clipped." It's better to be safe than sorry-especially if you're using crossfaders and mixer-based effects (which can push you into the reds at the drop of a hat if you're not careful).

Brilliant answer...I keep the the tascam just past mid range and use a secondary volume controller...just because of what you mentioned...the TASCAM will record faithfully...and in live situations I like to control the sound going to the TASCAM without having to touch it...if a secondary singer or instrument player comes in to use the live set up with no time to properly sound check...i like the control to be able to decrease or increase the sound going to the TASCAM...because as you mentioned something simple can put you into the red...i like to find the best medium and work my volume control from there...

That is true but obviously when attenuating the signal physically it will get pulled up by the mic preamp internally so you end up loosing lots of quality regardless of how you use the dr 05 or h1 or any other recorder with combined mic / line in :(
Can someone help me? I'm trying to record from a DJM800 with a tascam dr-40. I plugged the cables into the Rec inputs on the back of the mixer. But then everytime I put the recording options on the tascam on external mic I get no sound at all. On what settings do I have to put the tascam to just record a set?
Tascam DR-05 - 'Nominal Input Level -20dBV
Maximum Input Level -4dBV' - so it only really works for mic level, not line level. Since line level is -10dBV and generally DJ's will mix at +3 to +6dB on two channels at the same time. The only fix is to use an attenuator with these cheap recorders which as you said compromises sound quality. Best to get a recorder than can handle higher input levels.
@@celinedijon isn't it the internal mic's you will be recording through, afaik the external mic's are the a-b or x-y mounted on the outside of the unit - external. Hope this helps.
Okay, I just read the manual and figured out the problem, you need to pres the record button once and then adjust the level volume for the Tascam dr 05x, with the backward and forward button. I recommend to read the manual ! It helps a lot. It's a pretty good device to record mixes so just do your job.
The TASCAM DR-05 was really for MIC level signals, not line level signals. Its prefers a signal to be about -12db, which is that little arrow you see on the level gauge and its Maximum Input Level is -4dBV according to spec sheet. So even if you use your "rec out" on the mixer, and reduce the input on the TASCAM to its lowest setting, it will still peak if you set your gains to around 0db on the mixer like most DJs do and don't use the "peak reduction" setting. They are several work arounds if you want to use this inexpensive device to record a DJ set:
1. Record using "booth out" or "monitor out", as most mixers have a volume knob for these channels that can lower the signal sent to the recorder.
2. A -20 db Attenuator hooked into the line between the mixer and the DR-05, if your using "rec out" on the mixer.
3. A "in line" volume control knob, like you see on headphones, if using "rec out" on the mixer.
4. Reduce the gains on your input channels individually below 0db, so it doesn't peak when recording, but this goes against most DJ mixing styles, so try the aboves first.
The Trick with this recorder is that it doesnt like nothing above 0db at the channels ( master doesnt matter cuz master like is totally different than recording line ).. so, basically in your video you are pushing the channels up to 3 bars above the 0db line, thats why it clips, if you pull down your gain knob and dont allow your tracks to go above 0db (oranges) then you will be perfect with the Tascam (or any other recorder), you can clip with the master that as long as you dont clip the channels the recordings will be with great sound (master signal will be a mess if you clip a lot but at least not the record signal), if you add some attenuators you can have a little more room for not clipping in case that at some point the channel goes above 0db.
So basically this product WORKS, as long as you know how to use it right and know how dj mixers work.

I think you'd be fine if you adjust either your mixer levels or the levels of the device. My buddy used that same Tascam for recording our mixes and it worked beautifully; even when we did end up accidentally peaking (both on the mixer and the recorder showing the peak LED), it has yet to record a distorted mix. I'd check the settings on the Tascam.
I cant find any videos ANYWHERE with any Tascam recorder to set one up to record a DJ mix properly! What settings do you need it on the achieve this please?
As noted by many readers before, you are missing some essential functions of the dr-05 which make it utter impossible to f*ck up a overdriven recording... I quote:
" One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording."
Knowing this, why not just remove this video?
This is the solution for you:
In 3 steps:
1/ Turn on the recorder and press REC setting.
2/ Then scroll to MIC Power and set it to OFF.
3/ During the "Record/Pause" with the audio cables plugged in, set the MIC Gaine Level to 0.
Finished.
With these settings you use your MIC input as a LINE input.
I have the same recorder as you and with these settings I can record perfectly and without peak via an AUX audio cable.
This guy don't know how this equipment function! Master level do not affect on rec out!!!
And your channel on the mixer is already peaking! Is this how you mix music? And you expect from TASCAM to clean it for you?! Mate read the instructions firs!!!

How is the best way to record a dj set with the tascam dr-05?
@@eazyix3152 Plug and RCA/P2 on your rec out in your mixer and in your tascam. Press play, put the gain on ZERO on your mixer, than adjust the volume IN in your TASCAM, go volume down until the PEAK light stops flashing.
When I heard $300-$400 I almost fell out of my seat. Just for a good recording device. Thank you I have been looking for something like this for months. Keep up the good work. 😀
I wish I found this review sooner. He's absolutely right about this problem. You can manually adjust the recording level on the device, but not enough to be able to record from a line output. The signal will still be too hot and clip. The only way to record from an analog output is to use the headphone output turned down very low. This makes the device useless for recording DJ sets unless your mixer happens to have multiple headphone outputs where one can be set exclusively to the master output. It's a serious flaw in the design of what would otherwise be a great unit.
No one has mentioned the fact that u can adjust the recording settings. It has an inbuilt limiter and peak reduction option and also auto level.
here some advice, did you adjust the in line volume on the recorder. i have that recorder and it works wonders. you need to adjust your in-line volume if you are having trouble recording at live/home sets.
obviously you fail in lowering your input level.. Mine is working perfect, and the quality sounds excellent..

There is an input you can lower, along with a peak reduction or limiter you can choose..you would think he would know this

Having recently bought this and read through the comments on here, I thought I'd give a quick review. I bought the Tascam and followed all the instructions people gave in the comments. I read the manual. I put the peak reduction on. I had the input level of the device on the lowest possible setting. It could still not handle the input levels coming out of my mixer (it was plugged into the record out). I had the gain on each channel way down at -10 (only showing 4 Green LEDs) and it was still peaking. I appreciate that I could buy an attenuator but for an extra £10 here in the UK you can buy a Reloop Tape that doesn't peak at +6 (2 Amber LEDS on my mixer). Unless you're desperate for something that records in WAV format, a reloop tape which records at 320kbps MP3 is a far safer purchase in my opinion. I returned my Tascam and bought the tape, does the job just fine.

I got clipping problems with my Zoom H1, just picked up a 5$ headphone volume control cable (simply a cable with a physical volume button) to lower the output volume from the mixer and it works fine. Try searching for the Koss vc-20.

Yes, any kind of headphone control cable will work. :) No more clipping problems! As long as it has a female jack, a volume knob and a male jack.

No SIR !!! - Tascam DR-05 is the BEST recorder I have tested. I even have some other more expensive, like Tascam DR-60DMkII, M-Audio professional Microtrack II, and many others. For the price, you have the best sound and parameters. Indeed, you can plug a line signal to MIC inputs, you only need to adjust the correct levels. It doesn´t clip, BTW, besides manual gain, it has a limiter to avoid any kinds of clipping. I´ve tested with some of the noisiest environments, and no problem at all. Read the manual...it has many parameters, it´s not a zoom.

Iv got same problems with DR-05, I have tried everything even adjusting recording levels plus peak control level and none of them works, you should keep your levels down and during a dj set in a venue especially at the main time when you building up that's not possible...
I own a DR-05 myself and have managed to get it working mostly out of luck. It seems that you can get a usuable output from an ASIO device if you turn the gain all the way down to it's minimum and set the notch all the way to the right. The limiter built into the device seems to work pretty well against the gain/limiter built into VDJ, and that feeds a DJ|IO in my setup, where I immediately record the output in-line (the headphones out goes to the output source, which is usually speakers in my case).
As far as powered mixers go...I have also had no luck short of a in-line trimmer.
I noticed the Sony PCM devices when researching for somthing for this need, but the one thing that kept with with a TASCAM device is that they automatically start a new file when the 2GByte limit is reached...Kind of necessary when dubbing lossless.
There is some validity to this video. I just bought this unit because I also thought that he was simply sending too much signal to the DR 05. I don't use a mixer. I run backing tracks from my computer to the CD input on my POD HD 500 and run my guitar and mic thru the POD as well. Unfortunately the POD has no separate headphone volume control, which is what I sent to the DR 05. The headphone volume is controlled by the POD's master volume. I usually run it about 12:00 (half way). Even after setting the levels on the DR 05 to -48 db and setting the other input all the way down to 1, it was still over driving the inputs of the DR 05. So I turned my PA speakers (QSC K-8s) from 12:00 (half way) all the way up which of course now introduces some hiss from the speakers, and I turned my computer send (backing tracks) from around 50% down to 20. Also turned the POD output from 12:00 down to about 9:00. I was able to get a good clean recording at this point, but I don't like running the K-8s full blast. I will try using the low z outputs for the speakers and the 1/4 inch for the send to the DR 05 but I think it's either/or with the POD so the headphone out is my only option. I traded a small mixer for the DR 05 and I wouldn't have wanted to drag it to the gig and wire it up just to attenuate the recording signal.
On a side note, I have two pairs of apple headphones and neither works correctly with this unit. My Sony's work fine.
If you have the same issue with this or any similar device: the easiest and quickest solution is to use a pair of trs cables and use the master 2 output on the mixer. Adjust gain with master 2 knob and your mix is basically done. Same result, I like to make sure and not go over -12 and add amplifying later.
Dude, i watch your video and the same was happening to me on my mixer to my Tascam. I need it for my wedding videos and when going line in from a djs mixer the Tascam will peak no matter how low i adjust the level. But i figure it out myself. If a djs not using the monitor out on the djs mixer then you can use that line out to the Tascam and adjust the volume on the monitor out on the dj mixer and then adjust the recording level on the Tascam and your allset. As long as the dj doesn't touch the monitor level.

I use an Olin OVR-101 to record sets. It's a very very cheap 1GB recorder about the same size as the 1st gen iPod Shuffle. It has a 3.5mm jack input that can be switched between external mic and Line in. It only records at a bit rate of 128kbps max, but it did only cost $10.
Hey Cotts, so I watched your video after buying one of these to record my live sets. My home setup is a djm 850 and when I plugged in the DR-50 I realized that it was redlining recording. So then I realized that I had RCA->3.5 and the unit was set to mono recording wise since all club setups are mono anyway. Long story short, unplugging the right channel while the signal is mono into the Tascam gives me about -6db headroom. Not sure how your mixer (mine is set to mono on master) is setup or how you had the tascam plugged in, but wanted to drop you this line.
You just have to turn down the gain, if starts giving it that distorted sound at anything above 0db (orange and above on mixer). It’s annoying to have to turn the gain down on the channels but you can still get it to work fine
so I have one of the new Macs and I can't seem to record my set. I don't wanna record a video, I just want to record the mix.when I got the rca to headphone jack, I found out I can't record audio through the headphone jack on my laptop and that's apparently what all new Macs have. I have a ddi sb2 controller. I'm not sure if I need another accesory or something else; Plz help.
Yeah, these stupid laptops have done away with the line input. A shame really. Now you need to buy a separate usb interface.
Ravine used one in his mix he did at the beach that looked like it was made for the purpose of recording mixes. Wonder what that was called.

I use the Tascam myself and also on an Rec out of an DJM. Works PERFECT even with normal RCA Cable.

That microphone input is also a line level input. You either have a defective unit or are doing something wrong
I've got a DR05X which I've not had long and managed for it to not distort by adding a Fentronix attenuator and it does what it says on the tin. Plus I put the mix recorded through Audacity then normalise then jobs a good one 👌🏿

Interesting vid I was given similar view that you could record cassette tapes I gave this a go.on my louder recordings using left right buttons to bring the levels down on the tascam nothing peak L.E.D lights up level was at zero on softer recordings peak was not so much recordings sounded nice and adjustment of the sound level leaving the deck is not possible as some have said,what he was hoping for was a digital version of a cassette deck as was I looking in to the Sony now

i bough a tascam last week and i have problems for recording, the wire for connect the tascam and the mixer is a simple rca to jack? i think i need an adapter because the signal is recording only one chanel, the right I think, is this adapter the rode sc3?? im a little bit lost in this,

That's something I didn't thought about. But it uses 5V 1A, so there would be the possibility to use a external battery pack such as a USB phone charger (~20€; these should last for 1-2h; and you need an extra cable).
Ok I really don't know how good this combination is, but for ~120€ it could be an alternative for DJ which don't have the money to afford expensive recorders.
ok, so I have adjusted all my levels, yet, the recorded sound is VERY tinny, there is no distortion, just a weird tinny overtone. Do I need to convert Tascam input into an audio line input somehow (no Idea if that is even possible). I was told about RCA splitters that creates two separate mono channels which balances out the intensity of signals from my MASTER OUT of DJM 450. I have no record out...
Just get a stereo "pad" and use it to attenuate the input levels or get a stereo impedance transformer and match the input impedance with your recorder.
hey Dude, thanks for these tips, I do wedding videography and often ask the DJ for a copy of the tracks. One thing though, I have been checking the SD vs HD youtube sounds quality and it seems to be the same. See below :
Starting in 2014, TH-cam is streaming a 192kbps AAC audio stream regardless of video resolution (assuming the original upload was of this quality or higher). Prior to 2014 the audio differed by video resolution.
I saw that and it looked like a really good product, however it doesn't run off batteries! Often in DJ booths power points are hard to come by!

Wish I'd seen this before buying a DR-05. Turning the input level on the recorder to 0, the line-level record out from a DJ mixer is still too hot. Unless you turn the gains and channels right down so nothing is peaking above 0dB. Fine at home, no good in a club (where using the booth out is also a no-no).

Just a small thing. Regardless of the fact this a Pioneer mixer and they are very susceptible to distortion when redlining the preamp signal, look at the line level, they are of the scale. They should only just be hit the first orange, on peaks.

I have same problem, I did peak reduction when I recorded, but the signal is still to strong, I update the last firmware from the offcial website, so I dont know how is possible to control this volume, imposible I can record a set from a pioonner djm, if somebody know the way please let me know.
this guy is talking about when he rocords live in the club... not in the studio usually everithing in the club they have all redline. i know its wrong but i think thats what he meant... but yes u can record with this device in your studio mix

I've been meaning to answer this question definitively for myself for a couple years now and I've never gotten around to it. :-/ I THINK it's not possible to record via the TASCAM's mic AND via the TASCAM line-in at the same time-but I'm not positive.
Either way, I think a DJ set can sound SO much better when there's a hint of crowd noise mixed in to the recording. One of my friends does this with his important sets. I think in those cases, he uses his TASCAM to record the crowd (the mics on the TASCAM are quite good, I think) while he uses a laptop to record the actual set (via the mixer, perhaps). Later, he lines up the two recordings, and very subtly blends in parts of the recording of the crowd noise. It's important to not overdo it, since the crowd noise is really just there to provide "atmosphere" to the vibe of the recording. (I imagine he has to EQ the crowd recording pretty severely anyway, since it's probably picking up all the reverberations of the club speakers, etc.)
i think this DR-05 is a 2 channel recorder. not like the dr-40 which is a 4 channel, and you can record both the mix and the mic input

Did you try calling Tascam with your problem? Perhaps they have a solution. If not they might even change it for a device that can. Tascam has a good reputation as far as I know. Sony not so much.

Attention, TASCAM DR-05 not need audio cable attenuator for audio line in, to receive audio signal music form DAW, keyboard, synth, drum machine, and all music instruments with line out audio.

If you just get the set list you end up with just a playlist. A mix showcases the mixing skills of the DJ, the whole reason DJ's exist instead of someone just hitting shuffle on an iPod.

First, you need to check witch audio outputs using "for" line out! Second, you NEED to set manually to "0" dB. Me and my friends using this model for years in different mixers, only problem is wrong set on recorder or mixer. Lot of mixers have potentiometer/volume for "line out". In your case you did not show us in witch output you plugged recorder and you not set recorder itself!

for voice recording Olympus recorders ... Tascam (manual or auto) has problems with loud input and the voice is not bright and crystal... Olympus DS30 (wma) has perfect auto limiter - peak reduction ..... OLYMPUS No1 . used it the last 10 years...

they do but they might both be taken up with USB drives, in which case you need an audio out to record

I'm totally not. hehe. Still using my Sony PCM-M10, it's the best thing I ever purchased IMO. You can get them fairly cheapish now.

maybe you should learn to mix at 0dB like a pro..... or you do you think that pioneer mixers sound good when you push te levels. stay in te green, you will not only save your recordings but you speakers/PA systems and the ears of the crowd.
My solution was to plug the Tascam in to the main out and turn the volume on the mixer down and the volume of your speakers up

Traktor or rekordbox DJ or Ableton is better for recording Live sets but dont use audio interface of your pc or laptop. rca to 1/4 is still lesser sound quality than recording via usb. USB is almost XLR quality and XLR quality is best for audio
