This is such an excellent video, that I viewed it again, and there is another point, that came to my mind: I use the external inputs with a Lavalier microphone from RØDE, the ones you can clip to your shirt. With an adapter from 3,5 to 6,3 you could plug it in, but these work with only 4 V of phantom power. Therefore, you need an adapter from TLS to XLR with a voltage reduction from 48 V to 4 V.

What an excellent tutorial video. I've been using my Tascam which is an older model for 5 years where I haven't used it to its full potential. I'm going to buy the DR-40X to update. I'm excited now as thanks to your tutorial I'll get more use out of the recorder.
Definitely one of the best review/tutorials for this product to get someone up and running. Will most likely be referring back to this quite often until I become familiar with this gear.
Hi, great video. You won't believe I bought exact model device 5 years ago and never used it. I bought it to record hi quality wav files, a digital format of my favourite songs from turntable, reel to reel and cassette decks. Will get down to it one day :)
For human voice, specially in a video production stereo will sound uneven between the right and left speakers. It will favor one speaker over the other depending on the angle of audio source reaching the two microphones. So when a person is watching a video on a TV the voice of the person speaking will not feel like it's coming from the center of the TV screen, instead it will be felt to your ears from either right or left side of the TV screen
- You can also power the device with reloadable NiMH-batteries. In the menu, there is a setting, where you can switch between alkaline and NiMH. - Not all condensor mikes work with 48 V. In the menu, you can switch between 24 V and 48 V. - The mikes are not just folded for transportation. They are cardioid, not spherical. Thus, if folded out (the AB configuration) there is a sector right in the middle between them with signficant less sensibility, which in certain recording conditions you do not want. Folded in (the XY configuration), their lobes overlap in the middle. That reduces the segregation of the two channels, but in my opinion yields better results when recording a single source in front of you. Be aware, that the L/R channels are interchanged with each other: The left mike records the R channel and v.v. You can interchange the channels in the menu.
Unfortunately this only records audio, it doesn't have Sound Process chip inside to generate special effects. You will need to do that in post production.
Actually, I just purchased one yesterday and found out that while it doesn’t have all of the guitar effects that the Zoom H4n Pro has, it does at least have a few types of reverb. I tested that effect out, and it works great.

Very helpful tutorial! I just inherited this model and found your instructions the best! Many others were too technical for me. Have started recording and hope to do a guitar demo. Thank you!
I just bought DR-40 and it was uber helpful. It's my first time with device like this. I'm just getting into TH-cam :) I also have lavalier mic BOYA BY-M1 PRO which does not work through line-in jack and I think it's because I have stereo adapter from 3,5mm to 1/4 jack. I'll buy new adapter and see if it works! I bought this tascam specifically to record myself on motorcycle, recorder goes to my backpack and records motorcycle sound and then I have separate channel for lavalier mic to my helmet :)
They are very nice recorders and I am sure you will like it. Also with or without the correct adapter a recorder with only Line IN cannot record from Mic Level input, you must set the input to MIC level for it to work with your BOYA BY-M1. Line-IN signal is already amplified whereas the MIC level input is not amplified and the signal is extremely weak.
The only way to Auto sync is to use a wireless Microphone with a receiver attached to the camera's Mic input. Otherwise you have to sync it in post production. The way I do it is to clap with my hands next to the mic while the video camera is running, then I match the sound peak of my clap with the video as my hands hit each other.
Great video, just purchased this recorder and I was hoping I could use it for live streaming on my mac, but I can not seem to set it up so the interface is an option to select.
For that purpose you don't need to spend all this money on an expensive recorder, all you need is a USB Mixer like this one www.ebay.com/itm/194729218738
Thank you for your video. I purchased this to record some of my dj mixing sessions. I'm not sure about the best settings to use when I connect this to the output of my dj controller. Any advice?
The only way you can do that is to use Left input for the external sound source and plugin a Mic on the Right source, You can't record from all 4 channels simultaneously
Under normal settings in a Rock Concert the recordings will b extremely distorted and noisy. However if you choose the dual level sound bias recording, and chose very low recording levels, then it will be acceptable. It's worth mentioning that in both cases the recording will not be crystal clear, because the concert speakers are so powerful that they generate unwanted vibration sounds from the surrounding objects which will be picked up by this recorder.
No problem, see page 40 of this manual to set up the correct bit rate and recording duration tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-40x/e_dr-40x_rm_vd.pdf
Hi, the Deity D3 Pro is a Shotgun mic for DSLR cameras, so it doesn't come with the XLR cable. So you need to buy the correct adapter for it first and only then you can plug it to this. Also that is a Condenser Mic which requires power, if you use a battery inside the mic you don't need to turn on the Phantom Power for it. Last but not least Shotgun mics are very sensitive to vibration so make sure to have a vibration proof rubber band mount or a spring mount for it.
@@YoussefHallouly The answer is no because the Microphone itself already has a battery in it which provides Phantom Power for it. If the battery is missing, or not charged only then you may activate the Phantom Power.
Thank you for the tutorial. I'm learning to use this device to record talks at a seminar (and not experienced in electronics). Can you give me an idea of how many hours I can get on a SDXC 128GB card if I record in the WAV 24bit setting? Thank you.
No problem, so your question is incomplete as you didn't mention the recording kHz for an accurate answer. You have 3 options 44.1kHz, 48kHz, and 96khz. At best quality of 96kHz you get apporximately 30 min of recording per GB. For more accurate answer refer to page 40 of the manual here tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-40x/e_dr-40x_rm_vd.pdf
So I did an experiment to give you a correct answer. Although no where in this manual tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-40x/7l_dr-40x_om_vb.pdf it says that it will charge the batteries though USB, my personal experiment suggests that it will. When I plugged in the USB I got 4.8V DC power on the battery terminals when the unit is ON, and 5.1V when it is OFF. Both of which are enough to charge 3x 1.2V =3.6V Lithium ion or NiMH batteries.
I am new to recording anything. I have a TASCAM DR-40X. I have installed the SD card in & the batteries. I turned it on and the following words are displayed on screen: File Not Found _______________ Make Sys File Are you sure? I have n0 idea what to do next. I don’t see that scenario on my instructions. What should I do?
Chose the option " YES " when it asks you are you sure. The reason it is asking this question is that it will format the SD Card and delete all the existing data. Since your SD Card is new you don't have to worry about data deletion.
Any advice for audio setup? I want to record, -Sounds outside/in -My voice talking to it or capturing others -My guitar from an amp. I don’t know much about technology, I just got the device and excited to put it in use. Sorry for such a broad question.
Hi, the internal microphones are great for capturing sounds outside, however you must have wind blockers installed on them or else you will get tons of loud wind noise. For personal talking unless you hold it close to your mount it will capture unwanted background noise. So for that I recommend using a clip on microphone which you can ware, but even that mic must have a good wind blocker on it. For your guitar you can use the a standard XLR cable if your Guitar is Acoustic with no audio port then you can use it's internal mics to record. However you must do it in a quite room because this mic is very sensitive and it will pickup background noise also other than the Guitar sound.
@@user-gk6bw1xz6y If you are outdoors and need to pickup remote sounds of birds, crickets, and other wildlife you want to set it at high sensitivity. However if you are indoors and in a live music situation then you need low sensitivity or else it will max out and you will get distortion. Also remember that this unit has dual level recording, meaning it can be set to record with two audio level settings in case one maxes out you can use the lower level sound track.
Just like book marks on a book, this will creak marks on your audio file for future access or editing See page 60 in this manual for more details tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-40x/e_dr-40x_rm_vd.pdf
Thank you so much for such an informative video! Now I know that I'd need a windscreen and extra SD cards. May I ask if the Tascam dr-40x's internal mic is suitable for recording ambient, nature sounds? I'd like to film and record nature like waves washing up the beach, winds blowing through the forest, raindrops hitting the ground and such. If yes, would it be better to have the mics spread outwards to record the sound around me? Thank you in advance, your insight would be much appreciated!
You are very welcome, and yes it is suitable for recording nature sounds, and if you spread the Mics outwards you will have a much better stereophonic effect. So if listener has a stereo speaker system they feel as if they are there, specially if they hear it with headphones.
Thank you for the reply so to hook up the mixer to it, which cables do I need? I have RCA output. I don't know what type of inputs this recorder has. I ordered it and it is currently on route. I don't know which jacks it uses. Thank you so much.
This uses dual interface jack, which means the same jack can take a 1/4 Audio Plug just like the ones on professional headphones, and 3 PIN Male XLR plug.
I can't be a good judge on that because I have never used a Zoom H4N. However my friend spoke very highly of it, but he had the Zoom 4HN Pro black edition. For live recording I am pretty happy with my Tascam DR-40X, I love the dual level recording in case the sound source peaks too high, you have a backup copy at lower volume.
Hi i was wondering if this device would be good for recording outdoors noises like birds and wind (with a wind shield obviously), does it have a noise floor level that could destroy a low level recording or is there a way it can be useful without any additional noise?
Yes that this would be a great choice for outdoor Sounds of nature. Make sure you have a very good Windshield to prevent direct wind vibration. Unlike the old Cassette recorders, there are no moving parts inside this, because it is Solid State unit, so there is zero internal noise.
Great video, I’m new to using portable recorders. Like you, I want to record my keyboard and piano. This may be a silly question but can I plug the keyboard or piano straight into the tascam if I had the correct leads so that it would record the keyboard into the recorder? If so, I take it I could listen to the sound through headphones? Also, could I upload the sounds I produce onto GarageBand? Thanks again 👍
Indeed that is exactly how you are supposed to do it, it is not recommended to record the keyboard sounds through the Microphones. If you use the microphone you will have to many unwanted noises and the sound quality will not be as good. So you simply need to buy two XLR cables one for right channel and one for left channel, and connect them to the LINE OUT of your keyboard. Every keyboard has a different LINE OUT interface so make sure to get the correct cable for your keyboard.
Anyone reading this: DO USE STEREO JACKS, NOT MONO! The inputs are balanced and balanced audio only works while using stereo jacks (6.35mm TRS) or XLR.
Can anyone help....? I've set up Record mode as INT STEREO / DUAL RECORD. Hit 'record' - flashes - set levels - hit record again - solid red. Then....it records for 5 seconds and stops recording and flashes red again. It then counts this 5 sec recording as a ''track'' in the Music Files. It's like there is a setting somewhere which is allowing only for 5 seconds of recording. Same thing happens if I use Ext Line In. PS... I've had this for 2 yrs but only learning to use it the last few days. I wonder if it is a software update issue. Any help much appreciated. Wanted to use it tonight....
Got it.....go to REC SETTINGS...MODE...SET ''MODE'' to OFF (was set to NEW FILE and this was causing it to jump to a new file during a ''soundcheck/levels test'' as the audio was low and the machine thinks audio input has ceased and ends the track.
Is it difficult to make simple edits to a file using the divide function? I like recording one long take and snipping out as needed, I want to avoid using a PC for basic editing if possible.
When you buy a new SD card the unit will automactically initialize it and start recording on it. So you don't need to format it yourself. However if you want to erase all the contents of a used SD card then you can format with this device as illustrated in page 69 of the manual here tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-40x/e_dr-40x_rm_vd.pdf
The DM100 MR III is definitely a better unit with these major differences. Longer Record time approximately 510Hrs, better sound processor, higher sensitivity, more interfaces, and better speaker. It is slightly heavier though at 13.2 ounces vs the DR-40X which is 11.8 ounces
Can I use line level in recording? I want to make recordings of my DJ set coming out of my mixer RCA's. I know they make XLR adapters for everything but I'm not sure this recorder can handle line level in.? Need to know soon anyone please
Phantom power is necessary for both Electrolytic mics and condenser Mics because they have a transistor that requires power to operate. Also, the Dynamic Mic is nothing more than a wire coil around a magnet and the end of the coil is attached to a diaphragm. The DC Resistance of this coil usually ranges between 150 to 600 ohms which are too little resistance for 48V DC. This will magnetize the coil and push the diaphragm to one side causing damage to both the coil and the sensitive diaphragm.
Thank you so much for your very easy and clear instructions ,i felt like i got your years of experience, concentrated into half an hour. I just bought this device. From eBy . Thank you for your video. I purchased this to record some of my dj mixing sessions. I'm not sure about the best settings to use when I connect this to the output of my dj controller. Any advice?
The answer depends on the output audio level in +/-db of your DJ Mixer. So first use Line Level input if that was too loud try the Mic level.
Not something I'm ever likely to use, but another very interesting video.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the very helpful tutorial! Is it possible to use external and internal mics at the same time ?
The only way you can do that is to use Left input for the external sound source and plugin a Mic on the Right source, You can't record from all 4 channels simultaneously
Great information thanks for share
My pleasure!
Excellent tutorial! Thank a lot.
You are welcome!
Hi thanks for the video! :) could you please send me a link to the black little wind shields to cover the left and right mic
Hi, I bought the one linked below but you have to select the correct size which is 53x37x15 mm

How well does it handle loud sources like concerts?
Under normal settings in a Rock Concert the recordings will b extremely distorted and noisy. However if you choose the dual level sound bias recording, and chose very low recording levels, then it will be acceptable. It's worth mentioning that in both cases the recording will not be crystal clear, because the concert speakers are so powerful that they generate unwanted vibration sounds from the surrounding objects which will be picked up by this recorder.
thanks

Hi thanks for this tutorial, i have a microphone Deity D3 Pro can i plug it into this audio recorder?
Hi, the Deity D3 Pro is a Shotgun mic for DSLR cameras, so it doesn't come with the XLR cable. So you need to buy the correct adapter for it first and only then you can plug it to this. Also that is a Condenser Mic which requires power, if you use a battery inside the mic you don't need to turn on the Phantom Power for it. Last but not least Shotgun mics are very sensitive to vibration so make sure to have a vibration proof rubber band mount or a spring mount for it.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thanks so since it's a condenser mic i will need to use phantom power right?

Can it use USB power to charge the rechargeable batteries if you put them inside?
So I did an experiment to give you a correct answer. Although no where in this manual tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-40x/7l_dr-40x_om_vb.pdf it says that it will charge the batteries though USB, my personal experiment suggests that it will. When I plugged in the USB I got 4.8V DC power on the battery terminals when the unit is ON, and 5.1V when it is OFF. Both of which are enough to charge 3x 1.2V =3.6V Lithium ion or NiMH batteries.
He tells you how to connect ext mike but not use built in mike ??
Yes I mention that too, maybe you don't watch the entire video.
Just to make sure, there is no internal memory of this device? You do need an SD card correct?
Yes you need a Micro SD card, there is no slot for SD Card, only Micro SD fits in it.
can i insert marks using the mark button when playing back the previously recorded files?
Yes you can, see page 60 of this manual tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-40x/e_dr-40x_rm_vd.pdf
I am new to recording anything. I have a TASCAM DR-40X. I have installed the SD card in & the batteries.
I turned it on and the following words are displayed on screen:
File Not Found
_______________
Make Sys File
Are you sure?
I have n0 idea what to do next. I don’t see that scenario on my instructions. What should I do?
Chose the option " YES " when it asks you are you sure. The reason it is asking this question is that it will format the SD Card and delete all the existing data. Since your SD Card is new you don't have to worry about data deletion.

Any advice for audio setup?
I want to record,
-Sounds outside/in
-My voice talking to it or capturing others
-My guitar from an amp.
I don’t know much about technology, I just got the device and excited to put it in use. Sorry for such a broad question.
Also thank you for the video helping me navigate around!
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thank you I appreciate the response, also do you recommend I change any of the settings for these different recording situations?
@@user-gk6bw1xz6y If you are outdoors and need to pickup remote sounds of birds, crickets, and other wildlife you want to set it at high sensitivity. However if you are indoors and in a live music situation then you need low sensitivity or else it will max out and you will get distortion. Also remember that this unit has dual level recording, meaning it can be set to record with two audio level settings in case one maxes out you can use the lower level sound track.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Gotcha! Once again thank you for your time and hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy. Bless!
Does your minus button under enter/mark make a clicking noise when press? Mine is brand new and doesn't click in like the others buttons around it.
Yes all of them make that Clicking sound, so yours must be stuck in pushed in position.
What does “mark” do?
Just like book marks on a book, this will creak marks on your audio file for future access or editing

Which do you think gives better audio? This Tascam or the Zoom H4N? I am trying to buy the one that has the best sound quality for live recordings.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 super, thanks for being so prompt. Was you thinking of doing a video to show you linking it up and recording your keyboard?
Anyone reading this: DO USE STEREO JACKS, NOT MONO! The inputs are balanced and balanced audio only works while using stereo jacks (6.35mm TRS) or XLR.
Thanks for your input.
Excellent, your finding will help others with the similar issues, Thank You!

How to format the SD card, please. I see initialize, but then, the option is "set to factory setup." Does that mean the card or the whole recorder?

Yes you can, simply change the input settings form Mic to Line, you don't need any special filters etc.
Phantom power is necessary to use condenser mics. NO, phantom power will not destroy a dynamic mic. It will, however, destroy a ribbon mic.
