Oh, I forgot to mention, my hat turned out great for my first one! My Mom and Dad loved it too!
I've learned a lot watching your video several times. I made a similar one without the crown cut up into pie wedges. I was experimenting with making a reversible hat. My neighbor got the first one, which was surprising the best one. He loves it. Now that I've done enough experimenting, I will download your pattern and take it to the copy shop to print. And find some fabric thicker than what I have on hand. I don't usually download patterns because I am too fussy and learn more figuring it out.
@valablu I've studied lots of different hat patterns and styles...then decided on what features I liked and what I thought should be added and created this pattern. I also designed a more fitted hat about 2 years ago.
@janc458 Thank you! I'm so glad you like the tutorial :) Can't wait to hear how your's turns out!
This is fab! Can't wait to try it out as this is the only style of hat that suits me so it's great to know I can have a go at making one myself.
I consider myself about intermediate at sewing, and I found this project really easy, quick, and fun to do! It took me just over an hour to do, including cutting pieces. It would have taken less time, but I had to share my ironing board....Anyway, thanks SOOO much, Miss Whitney, you are amazing!
@PTuinman Yep! I'm so excited because I love Corinne's projects and style :)
@SParkApCider That's awesome! I had a groovy newsboy hat back in the late 90s that I loved so much...wonder where that is now...
@sewmommysew That sounds really cool! One thing I used to do was alternate the 'right' and 'wrong' sides of the fabric. It gave the panals contrasting colors but still coordinated.
@Sobreya Hehe thanks! My sewing skills are about the same...I've just decided to throw in more challenging tutorials every once in a while. When I first started Whitney Sews I worked 40-50 hours a week so I just did super quick and easy tutorials. I get lots of requests for dresses, but I have no training in draping or pattern making, so it's really difficult for me to come up with a tutorial that can fit (and will look good) on a large variety of sizes and shapes...maybe this summer...
Always had trouble attaching that brim. Your video provides an elegant solution with the double hat band. Thank you.
this is my favorite sewing channel........ love it!
Love this! I made one in fleece, a beautiful 'groovy' 60-70's vibe. I have been looking for a pattern for a while. This one is fabulous. Thanks for the pattern and this awesome tutorial. I'm a subbie!
@ErixtheRed1990 I'm so glad that you found what you need! Can't wait to hear how your hat turns out :)
Thank you soo much for this pattern and tutorial, I"ve been struggling trying to make my own
Glad you like it! I've never timed it, but I'm sure it's under 2 hours start to finish and quicker the more you make. I've never tried adding a stretch band. Would probably need to make all the hat pieces just slightly wider and the band longer and add about 3-4 inches of elastic into the back of the band. I've never actually tried this though so you would want to test it out first with some scrap fabric before making the final hat with nice fabric. Best of luck. Let me know if you try it :)
I love mine! I had to add 1/2" seam allowance on the pattern because I am such a ROUGH curve sewist. But I managed to get through it! So proud of my efforts too! I need to do more though now that I am sure of the pattern fitting my 23 1/2" noggin. I love this project especially because it doesn't take ALL DAY to make one! Thanks Whitney! ♥
I used muslin I had on hand to make the first dry run hat, it's a good idea to make a mock up so you can get the hang of sewing in all those curves. It really takes concentration, so glad I waited and did it when I had time to devote to just sewing. Thanks again Whitney for providing us the cool free pattern and license to use it for personal use! I know now what to get my son for a stocking stuffer. LOL! Not to mention how to end up with one in denim. I'll post pics of the new one soon! ♥
@246810hiie Interfacing is a material used to give fabric more structure and stability. If you buy the iron on kind (instead of sew-in) it will have a textured/shiney side. To use you place the texture side down on the 'wrong' side of your fabric and iron according to the interfacing directions.
You can use cotton fabric, but I recommend something a little heavier like a twill fabric.
Thank you for sharing this newsboy hat tutorial. I am making a coat for my Tailoring class and I have all this great wool leftover and wanted to make a matching hat and this is perfect hat to make!
Great vidoe.....Just made this hat for my wife following your instructions...turned out really nice....Thank you....
@amberlbrowning Depends on who's scale. I consider this to be a pretty easy project, but it may feel much harder to a newer/less experienced sewer.
thanks so much for the tutorial ,and the pattern.i never make fabric hats before .i do crochet lots of hats, i am going to try and make this one .wish me luck.
@JaimseyGirl That's great! Glad you liked the tutorial :)
Thank you so much for sharing your tutorial and pattern even though you make these to sell. Very generous! I'm making one right now as a late Christmas gift for a friend. I'm a beginner at sewing and can't wait to see her face when I give it to her!
This is a fabulous pattern. I made one yesterday using cutoff pants legs. Turned out great, really cute. I don't have any pellon, but did a lot of extra stitching on the brim and it turned out fine. I used this original pattern because I don't have any bias tape either. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing. I'm going to make 2 for my granddaughters. Great tutorial!
Thanks for sharing.
I LOVED this video. I love how fast it was. sometimes I just need visual confirmation of what im doing and I dont want to sit through a half hour tutorial.. I was intimated to make these hats but after seeing this i know I can do it. thank you!
Wonderful! I'm so glad the video was helpful for you :) I do my best to make all my tutorials an appropriate length so that the project is easy to understand, but doesn't go on too long. I hope you subscribed so you do miss out on any of my new tutorials. I upload a new one every single Wednesday.
AWESOME TUTORIAL! I've been sewing since 1968 and have never made something like this. Well done Whitney! I shared it on Facebook. Way to go girl! God bless you!
wendi thornton Thanks for the share! Glad you like the video :)
I made one of these last week and I freakin love it! Thanks Whitney!!!
@masterchafas Iron in interfacing is a material that has glue on one side (has a bumpy texture). When you iron it the glue melts and adheres to the fabric. It's used to give more structure and stability to whatever you're making.
i love it! I think I'll try making it this upcoming week. Thank you!
You make it look soo easy.
i made another one today it turned out really cool i used alternating colors and used fake fur for the outer 24 inch strip it looks awsome n fits perfect this time!!!! thanks soo much
Just made one for my and one for my 7yo (it's her birthday!) That were super easy to make, thanks for the great tutorial!
I am attempting to make one for my 9 mo old grandson.. looks like im going to be making a couple of them until I get the right size. Great tutorial, watched it twice so far! You make it look so easy!
@fieltromania Thanks! Glad you liked it :)
Thank you for the pattern.
I love hats but I can't ever find one that fits me right. I am so excited to try this tutorial so I can have a hat that fits me. Plus I love how you added the broches' to make it sparkle. Thanks! Great JOB!!!
@ChannonRose Hehe yep...figured enough people had requested so I should finally do the tutorial on it. Hope you liked it! :)
@CraftsbyKawaiiSaru Hehe that's a really good question, but the hats are nicknamed Newsboy because it's the type of hat the little boys selling newspapers on the corner would wear in the late 19th and early 20th century.
@aglanceatmyworld I make lots of dresses 4 my daughter ...Im pretty sure I can make the hat I was most worried about how hard the bill of the hat would be...Thanks so much 4 sharing!
Whitney is amazing!
I made this and i love it, Thank you ❤
Very simple teaching.
I appreciate you.
I subscribed and thumbed up.
You make the hat look easy to make. I know it takes a little more skill and a great sewing machine.Very very cute.
Thanks so much for the pattern. I am having trouble printing it off to scale. Can you help.
This is absolutely perfect for the MacCready cosplay I'm working on!
@sewmommysew Awesome! Take just a slightly larger seam allowance when sewing the six pieces together and then a larger seam allowance on the band (depending on how much smaller the hat needs to be) and that should make it fit. My head is smaller then average so that is what I always have to do to make my hats fit. (You can't tell in the photo, but I had the hat clipped in the back to fit).
love the hat will probably try and make it since it can be custom made as most hats don't fit.
@Craftovision Thanks!
I appreciate your cap information. I'm making my first hat and I didn't understand how to put the brim onto the hat. So, you clearly solved that problem.
Thanks,
Clara
I'm so glad the video was helpful for you :)
Whitney have you tried buckram in the brim of the hat for stiffness. I know I used it years ago in drapery headers. Was just wondering how it might work here. Thanks for the tutorial.
Great tutorial very helpful.
I ordered two of your patterns more than a few days ago a news boy hat pattern a Christmas stocking 😀
Great tutorial! I love that hat.
Thank you so much for this tutorial - I made one!! It's a little rough, but it fits (after a bit of alteration for my small head!!) and it looks cute!! Thank you so much again - can't wait to try another one... maybe for my mom!! haha!
Thanks for the tutorial. Might have to go make one now!
@Sobreya Heh it's ok...I didn't even notice it :)
@billkaulitzluvagirl It depends on how wide the fabric is, but I think it was less then 1/3 yard of each.
Awsome tutorial Whitney!!! I love these NewsBoys hats that rock!! Great to watch you everytime sweety! Yes, Corinnes back and WATCH IT with Face-Time with our host, Whitney! Good job hun!! :) Talented gals & my friends:D oxox Gothictany!
i've been waiting for this forever!! thanks!! :)
Thanks for this! I just made one and I love it. :)
May I know what you used to cut the fabric? It looks special.
oh my, your work is so very neat, and yo make it seam so easy. thanks.
Thank you! So glad you like it :)
It is called a rotary cutter. It uses a circular blade to cut instead of a flat blade like scissors use. You can get them at Wal-Mart in the craft area or at most stores that carry fabric. I recommend the fiskars brand if you want to get one. The blades eventually get dull and need to be replaced. You can get replacement blades at the same place as the rotary cutter. Hope that helps :)
This is great! I've really wanted to make one of these!
@NovemberBlueTV Thanks! If store bought hats are usually a bit small for you then you'll probably want to cute your pieces slightly larger and make your band 1/2 to 1 inch longer. Let me know how it turns out :)
I just love this tutorial and pattern; I've made my second hat, which I fine-tuned to fit my big head! (the hats in the store are always just a wee bit too tight).
Awesome! I'm so glad you are loving it! I always have the opposite problem and store bought hats are always way too big for me (which is why I started to make hats in the first place!).
this looks so easy. a must try
Great cap .will be my next project. 😀. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Ficou muito linda!
obrigado! por compartilhar! Thanks for sharing!!
Exactly what I needed! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing!
I got my pattern for this type of hat from baby hats when I was making photo prop hats for the babies to where . Where did you get yours?
Thks lovely for yr quick reply will view whithney sew newsboy hat.All blessings 2u.
I am going to make this but was wondering how much fabric I will need of each? Thanks!
@hellerZauberer No, I don't have a driving cap tutorial at this time...maybe sometime...
omg, marvelous!
@sewmommysew Yeah, I would sew two darts near the back...I had to do it to one once.
FAntastic tutorial! What is the seam allowance do you use? IS it included in the patterns?
@cheftobe333 I can't remember off the top of my head...but I think it was about 1/4 a yard. If you're going out and buying fabric I would get 1/3 a yard just to be safe :)
Thanks so much for this pattern. I have downloaded and printed it out. But my problem is on top stitching (the final top stitching) with band and brim. My stitch instead of running on the band on the inside it is running on the hat. I am trying to figure this out. I want this hat to be perfect. I am a crocheter and now after knowing basics on sewing, i am back seriously. I love the shape of the newsboy. Thanks anyway. I will try to give my best on this.
@CollidingSparks You need the sticky kind which is called iron-on interfacing. A medium weight one will work. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions :)
Nice job with great details. Thanks
Is there any way you could do a welder's cap? There's a free pattern and instructions on FLICKR but I can't get it in my head how to put it together. I could really use your help :) Thanks!!
@gothictany73 Aww thanks! I love when you comment because you always have something so sweet to say :)
you cut the fabric without tracing the pattern first? ? *gasp* So brave!!! and thanks for the pattern!! Love it!!
I just made my son (he's 9) one of these out of his old gray, black and white flannel shirt, came out great and it was so fun to make! Thank you so much for sharing this one! :)
***** That's awesome! So glad it turned out great! I would love to see pics of the hat :)
I love my new hat! I have pics but not sure how to share them here, lol. This is for those who have previous sewing experience. The only thing I would add is to clip the curved seams then press. Thanks again and great job! A hat that will look great on everyone!
Wendi Thornton Just saw the pics of your hat on my facebook page! I love how it turned out! BTW I'm terrible and never press any seams on my hats...I'm getting better about ironing on other projects though :)
You did a great job and thanks Whitney.
Wow, that hat is freaking professional! Good job!!
Thanks Glad you liked it
This was very helpful! Thanks for the tutorial :D
Glad you found it helpful :)
i think this video is super good!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. I love this hat, and you make it look so easy! I have to make one for myself. :)
Well I have to say I am in the middle of my first try and I don't know whether it is the grain I cut it on, or because of the interfacing I used, it is really small so far. At least the top part. I will continue it and give it to my granddaughter and try another for my cousins chemo head. (after I of course watch the video again.)
Great !!!...just right for spring and summer =D Thanks Whitney !!
Thanks very much ... this was incredibly helpful!
This is super cute! How much fabric did you use?
