It is sometimes called the newsboy hat because boys your age and younger would wear them while selling newspapers. It really is a working mans hat and one almost exclusively male compared to more dress hats styles worn by both men and women.

I refuse to own a baseball cap. I have many hats; flat, baker boy, bowler, boater, berets, fedora, forage and woolly.
There are occasions for each and every one depending on the message I wish to project in my appearance or situation.
The beret and forage cap within very defined parameters, obviously.

An excellent video, for extolling the vertue of the humble cap. The world of caps and hats is a place I've lived since in my teens.
Where I live a hat can save your life, at least in summer, but winter winds can soon dislodge it. A cap is warm and cosy, and much more stable. So much more to say but you covered it very well with great advice.

I agree, it is a perfect bridge for many outfits.
I have recently decided to make a change to my look and I am loving it.
New Year's Eve I walked into a "do". Sports jacket, waistcoat, fob watch,, smart jeans, boots, topped off with a news boy cap. Heads turned and not all in a good way, but I am past caring.

Recently purchased my first flat cap and loved it so much I purchased a second one within a week. As a bald man in a hot and sunny country I have always felt the need for a hat of some sort. Baseball caps are not dressy and most are just to warm to wear, as other bald men know, laking hair also means we sweat easier. However I have found flat caps made of mesh material that solve my problem, protects my bald head from the sun while being "breathable" keeping my head more ventilated and classier than a baseball cap.

Excellent video, very informative. I have several flat caps and "Newsboy" caps, nothing flashy. I wear the flat cap when I need to dress up for a meeting and a Newsboy cap when I am going about my normal day. It is not a hard fast rule but a guideline that bends according to the situation. Either way I feel better when my head is "dressed up" as well.

I have watched with interest and have recently decided to hang up the baseball caps and go with the the flat cap. I have purchased 5 so far and after re-watching this video again today decided to purchase a Kangol black 100% wool #504 flat cap on Amazon, to go with my new London Fog black wool car coat. Amazon has a 7 day free trial before purchase policy for this cap which I think is good. With the trial I can make sure it fits well before purchasing. My favorite flat cap I've purchased so far is a Hannah (of Donegal Ireland) multi colored patchwork cap which I really love. The colors go with so many of my clothes and the quality is quite good & fits perfect. I am slowly putting my new wardrobe together mostly based on the information in your videos. Next up is putting the jeans aside and getting some chino type pants and a nice pair of black loafers. I live in NW USA, WA State and lots of ball caps and jeans are worn here, so I will stand out in a crowd.

  • @marc4199

The flat cap is such a classier and mature option to a ball cap. Thankfully, more people here in America are embracing them. I find it very disturbing to see how casual our society has become. People dress the same here whether they are going to church, out to dinner, or cleaning their garage. If that was not bad enough, very few people feel the need to remove their hats indoors. Almost no one who enters a restaurant removes their hat while eating. I wear some form of footwear that are not sneakers/tennis shoes, pants without holes, and a button down shirt. I am better dressed than 95 percent of the people I come across out in public. The state of peoples' dress and total lack of etiquette here in America has fallen so far from what I remember growing up in the 1970's was like.

LOVE my cap collection. As I have aged (...as we all must do) I made a conscience effort to dress appropriately whether casual, semi-formal or even black tie... Not only because it shows a level of maturity (I.E. 'experienced' & 'traveled') but really because I'm no longer a young man and I'm proud (and actually slightly surprised) that I've lived this long.... That and I want to flaunt the fact I have taste and consideration in my appearance.

I am a huge fan of the flat cap. It seems to universally suit all men and even women and is immensely practical.
Although wool ranks as king in our fair isles, I do think that a light coloured cotton bunnet has its place on a hot day. Also, though I don't own one yet myself, I believe that a waxed cotton flat cap could come in handy here on the well hydrated west coast. 🌧️

Thank you for that excellent video. I'm wearing flat caps for 35 years and I learned a lot listening to you. I bought 2 caps today and I was browsing on the topic. I am so glad I found your channel. Do you know, by any chance, where (or what book or encyclopedia) you got that picture you showed at 5:10 ? I really like it. Thank you, Sir.

Used to wear them when living in the UK. Now in Australia I wear an Akubra Traveler, but do have a wax cotton flat cap if really wet.

At 52 I no longer have hair but need to keep my head warm and not wear a baseball hat with my suits, I have embraced the flat cap. I love it I the winter and even in the summer so the top of my head doesn’t burn.

I love the flat cap. It goes well with whatever I wear. As an Anglican Bishop in the USA, it goes with my cleric suit and even a cassock while on a walk.

I’ve been wearing flat caps the best part of forty years and they’re part of me now. It’s noticeable that as men’s dress sense has gone through the floor the humble flat cap has become semi-formal. I’m proud of maintaining this very British style and I’m sure it will eventually become much more widely worn again.

I wear mine only when i go fishing. Then i use my old newsboy cap for helping my family around the ranch. Herding sheep and cattle. The cowboys look at me in a strange way. In the US its not worn alot. So the looks are expected. To me its just more comfortable and i like them.

Fuzzy Newsboy hats by Kangol were VERY popular among the lower and middle class, especially in Dancehall culture when II was growing up in the 80s and early 90s in Barbados.

Hello Ash. Another great and informative video. I have a couple of caps which I enjoy wearing, in both cold and wet weather. One is soft, as you describe, but I'm unsure of what the second is called. It has the shape of a flat cap, but is ridged. It appears to be made of a pressed or formed material, not tweed.
Also, I've notice in a few of your videos, a smoking pipe. I'm not sure if this is simply a prop on your table, or if you occasionally smoke. If you do smoke a pipe, I would be interested in a video on your choice of pipes, and any smoking accessories you might use, when taking your pipe along with you on your travels.
Again, thanks for all your informative and entertaining videos.

I would add that a flat cap can also be worn indoors without looking or feeling stuffy. And it's more stylish than a ball cap.

As some one who feels uncomfortable stepping out side the house with out a cap I wear a well wron base ball cap first and foremost to take the edge off the light. I dislike tinted lenses and sun glasses. I think you have raised some good points about flat caps but how well do they go with fleece jackets? I agree a flat cap goes well with a sports jacket and smarter wear so I may well be getting one.

I think a flat cap can be pressed into service with a fleece for sure - its the gentleman's version of a baseball cap in many ways!

I never liked hats - til my hair began to abandon me in my late 30s - i then became a pretty avid hat wearer to
keep my buzz-cut pate covered from cold and sun. Not that you HAVE to be of any particular background to
wear a flat cap - BUT being a New Yorker of Irish (& German) descent, well, a flat cap has always been a classy choice. Imo

When I was a kid, my dad and most other men of his age wore trilbies and similar. Older men then were never seen without a flat cap on, and were usually seen puffing tobacco on a pipe.

I used to wear a tweed flat cap as a young Army officer off duty back in the day. I stopped wearing any kind of hat or cap after I left but am going back to them, not because I want to cut a dash but I'm tired of getting soaked in the winter rain..for that reason I have just ordered a Barbour waxed flat cap
