The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This is sadly, one of THE most underrated groups in rock history. These guys were fantastic.
I couldnt agree more.
I couldn't agree more. They had a great sound and the hits to prove it.
criminally underrated
I agree
As a drummer, I especially love the fills on this-which are more prominent in the studio version.
Howard Kaylan - one of the most underrated vocalists of the 60's. Frontman for an equally underrated band!
I agree.
The guy sure looked like a turtle.
Super happy frontman
@@mckessa17 behind a counter selling sausages.
Who precisely is it that underrates these bands?
The Turtles should be in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. For goodness sake, they played their own instruments, and could sing their asses off !!! 😢
Stunned and saddened that they and other deserving groups and artists STILL are NOT in.
Davey Jones of Monkee fame says it requires a fee to be admitted,
This is such a feel good song. You can't help but sing along to it. Pity there aren't more bands like this.
I love the Turtles, I grew up in the 60’s and the 70’s and we had the best music ever
60's and 70's the golden age of music...great band.
Incredible! Nothing touches the power of 60s songs.
To me only the 70s can touch it.
@@donnaatienza8001 80s
I really do not like the seventies much
😂@@deadmanswife3625
60s, best decade ever!
Wow, that guy is a GREAT singer, what a voice !!!
And he was even better after he joined Zappa.
Mark volman
@@1234567jrmo I mean Howard Kaylan.
One of the only bands of the day that actually played on their records. Studio quality musicians. Drummer John Barbata's drum track on this record is one of the highest rated drum tracks in recording history.
John always with the slick groove and style doing it. RIP.
Live and not lip-synced. They had real talent back then.
What a great live performance!
@@apexjoe4769 No kidding! Got to see the guy break his guitar strap and everything!
Great song. Great band. Always a good time. =)
Only the vocals are live. Anybody should be able to tell this.
Quasi-lip sync'd. See any horns? Nope, but we heard 'em.
The accompaniment track was tape; vocals were likely a combination of live + lip sync.
@@KurtI2525 Agree. Nary a cowbell in sight at 1:48.
When music was fun.
They sure were a happy bunch . The clowning around was kind of energizing . I am 74 now and watching my second Turtles video . Remember them from decades ago and still listening if played on oldies radio .
Drumming was exceptional for a simple pop song.
Johnny Barbata ...went on to CSNY and Jefferson Starship
1:09 I've watched this so many times , and just now noticed the guitar strap breaking
nice catch
Howard Kaylan has a voice from another world. What heart and feeling... One of the most underrated singers of all time..
I miss the 60's. What a great time to be a teenager. That music will never return.
I love the way the drummer spins his sticks
John Barbata is great on the drum kit with the tricks for TV audiences. The guy has talent. Still alive and well!
Thank the gods!!
@@Anonymous-gx5dx He was invited to join The Eagles, but he declined because he was with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young at the time.
Thing I always find funny about the old days is just the amount (and quality) of sound some drummers could get out of just the most basic drum kits. Like if you watch Greg Errico from Sly & The Family Stone - - - half the time he's on a friggin' Sears Silvertone set!! But then after they've made it big, they'll upgrade to something choice like a Ludwig, or Gretsch kit and forever chase the sound they once had with the el cheapo kit.
Life's funny like that, y'know?
Understatement, JB is a beast!
Because Barbata was so great on the drums, especially on that performance on Ed Sullivan, I'd always wished that they had a separate camera on John exclusively. He was that great as not only a drummer but a performer.
Turtles underrated ……are you people nuts. They were fabulous
and greatly appreciated!
The singer, Howard Kaylan, was only 19 years old. Great presence for such a teenager.
His whole top of the head looked grey 🤔🤔
@@watashlegend Yes, he was prematurely gray in his teens.
I would’ve guessed 35.
He looked 60. And one of the guys looks like Jonah Hill.
The oldest looking teenager in history 😂😂
Mark Volman was quite the showman judging from this old footage. I remember as a small boy growing up in England in the 1960s the Turtles were always being played on the radio. As they were American, we knew little about them. Such an underrated band. It's good that, thanks to the internet, we can revisit the music from that time.
Best feel good group of the 60’s!
Their positive energy is amazing
Any love for Howard Kaylan the lead singer? Fantastic!
The guy playing the Rickenbacker manages to break his guitar strap at 1:11 and ends up holding it....Totally agree about John Barbata on the drums...pure class.
.. yes .. lol .... He shouldn't have the hair on his forehead, his head is too tiny.
Hate when that happens. :-)
@@catholiccowboy8545 agree but anything went back then. What beautiful times! Glad I lived them!
Nice observation . And what beautiful times!
Good eyes and on the money (Barbata)!
Wow..being a Boomer, I remember seeing this on TV, watching with my parents, being nine..!
Is it me or was the world a better place in the 60’s and 70’s?
A far, far better place.
It was definitely a better world!
It had good things for sure. But the past always looks rosy. We also had the Vietnam War and gross hippies spitting on veterans. And Charles Manson, so things weren't perfect.
It was.
It was better when white Republicans were running the nation and the hippies were just gnawing away the edge of it
Great song! And they did it LIVE . Turtles sooooooooooo underrated.
Live vocals on pre recorded track. Guitars had no amp cords. Great vocals/ harmonies. I miss the good times music.
I miss those times too … at least we have the memories ..,
Where is the horn section?
@@phoenixmediaforge In the pit.
The music was not live
Only some of the vocals.
OMG..thank goodness for the great memories. What a WONDERFUL, INCREDIBLE time it was to be young! We didn't realize how VERY blessed we were. Howard was such a great front man, and, they made such "feel good" music. TURTLES FOREVER!
🤗❤️❤️❤️🎵🎶
For those of you debating the lip syncing issue, the vocals were live. Backup tapes were frequently used for the instruments, but not every time.
I love this song. They don't make music like this anymore.
I dont even know if there is music anymore. Underrated band. What a sound!
@@screenwriter44 I totally agree with you on that.
Why are this band not in the R&R Hall of Fame ? They're fabulous. ❤ Lead singer has a fab voice. 🎼
These guys look like they were having fun. This is a favorite from my childhood..
Still not in the rock in roll hall of fame isna crime
Who's Watching This in 2024!
right here
You did.
I am and just shared it with my sister.
Happy songs.. I love them, but you have to go back decades to find a bunch of
Your grandma
Mark Volman makes every band he has ever been involved with so much better!
Howard's voice was amazing; he is truly an under-rated singer; Mark V 's harmonizing incredible- entire group was awesome! This group to me was right up there with "the Beatles" - Loved soooo many of their songs and listed to several all summer in my pool!
The live vocals for this are incredible
13 years old in 1967, and I loved this great band. They were a US band who were charting great hits in the middle of the British Invasion in the USA !!! ROCK ON TURTLES !!!!
PS: the British Invasion was the term used about all of the British bands that came to the USA after the Beatles success in the USA. Most of them were mediocre at best with one or two mediocre songs, but they dominated the US top 40 charts for no other reason then that, they were from england. "hello, we're from england, just like the Beatles."
Me too
Me, too!!
@@carlomiller1984I doubt there's anyone here who didn't know that.
Me too !
Happy 78th Birthday to Johnny Barbata. The drumming on the remastered version of this song sounds amazing.
Ah, my favorite Turtles song! I love this performance! This is one of the happiest songs ever. Thank you so much for uploading it!
You nailed, it. It was and is still a joy, to listen too.👍🏻👍🏻
@@ivangranger8494 You nailed it too! It's hard to even express how happy this song makes me.
Absolutely agree.
This is one of my all time favorite songs,, never get tired of listening to it. (I even like to sing along) has such great memories with it.
.totally agree with you it's such a great 60s song 🎵 top class
I remember seeing this performance on Ed Sullivan. i was a junior in high school and went next door to see it on our neighbor's homemade Heathkit color TV.
Heathkit. Who could forget those build-it-yourself kits?
Ed Sullivan brought great memories/ entertainment to the world all those years....
Mark Volman's enthusiasm is contagious,
I’ve fallen in love with this band, proper gone down a rabbit hole of their music all from a sample or two from some hip hop tracks i love. Such a talented band.
I watched this on the Best of Ed Sullivan and noticed the guy with the Rickenbacker got carried away at 1:12 losing his guitar strap. It fell almost to knee height with him barely saving it. He went on about his business like a pro in front of the whole country. My favorite T song along with Elinor.
Classics never get old just better.
Clowning or not, Barbata's drumming is ridiculously good...🙏👍🔥
Howard Kaylan's book is a must-read!
a cautionary tale
The best!
Howard Kaylan is one of the BEST singers of the 60's !!!
Working with two tambourines! Doing a great job with them to man😁🎼Excellent band!🎶⭐️
An amazingly tight band and I can't imagine a better lead than Kaylan. The way Flo and Eddy played off each other is what really set them apart. It's not just their body of work, but rather how their songs have stood the test of time. This video depicts what a band should be: talented performers having a blast.
I still love this song in 2024!! ❤❤
If you don't like this...well something is WRONG! Toe tappin finger snappin rock n roll!
Happy (belated) 75th Birthday MARK VOLMAN. Thank you so very much for all the GREAT MUSIC. AND THE "HAPPY TOGETHER TOURS. GEE, YOUR SWELL.
Listen up folk's. Wonder what real music sounds like ?? Just listen to these guys. No Autotune, Just real talent. God bless you all, Jim
Right along with the Rascals, the Association and the Classics Four, one of my favorite groups from the '60s!!!
Howard and Mark were just 19 at this time. Incredible.
They Are Both Now 76!
This is one of the best bands ever!! They have other songs that are just as great as this one, go and explore their other songs👏🏽👌🏽👍🏽
These guys were awesome. I can't believe I didn't know any songs other than happy together. Their subtle humour just make it better!
Another classic by this underrated band, and don't forget, it was NOT lip-synched but performed live.
Crisp easily understood singing voice. What a time they hit.
back in the late 60's a friend and I hoping to see the turtles went to the coliseum in Phx, where they had a concert the night before, hoping to get a glimpse of the Turtles. We arrived as they were heading out ... followed (chased) them to Sky Harbor airport, and hung out with them while they were awaiting their flight. Really down to earth (a little crazy) ... kind of picture the 'Monkees' on television. (I got to hang out with three of the Monkees .... a bit longer story ...)
Great save Al nichol!!!
This is what a live performance is supposed to sound like. They were fabulous in person as well as on stereo.
I saw them during their Flo & Eddy incarnation at the Ritz in the early '80s.
Absolutely love this song! Take it from someone born 35 years after this was aired.
Wow, you're not even old enough to drink... 😉
You were born in 2002?
Oh to be a teenager in the 60s
Sometimes I wish I was too.
Good,good, good, good, thaaaaaaang!!!
CA Girl HERE. IN HS When these "UNDERRATED" MUSICIANs hit #1.🎉🥳🙏
Where is wonderful stuff like this today?
Man, I need a time machine!!
She'd Rather Be with Me" is a song written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon and released by the Turtles in 1967. The song was the follow-up to "Happy Together".
Thank you for giving the credit to the Song Writers. Just this morning I commented on a Video about John Denver where in the Comments People were Praising him for the Song, "Take Me Home Country Roads" when he didn't write it. Bill Danoff and Taffy Nifert of The Starland Vocal Band who had a Hit with their Song "Afternoon Delight" wrote it for Johnny Cash but when John Denver heard it, He wanted to record it and then he helped finish the song so, he only wrote part of it.
Doesn't get any better than this.
This was on the ed Sullivan show🎉❤ great!
Johnny Barbatta was the best drummer of the 3 drummers they used. .Truly an excellent player.
Incredible string of hits from 1965 to 1969 gave us great memories for those who lived during that time. This song peaked at #3 in June, 1967. This sounds better than the studio recording.
It really bothers me that for years the only song of theirs many radio stations play is "Happy Together", forgetting that their were eight other top 40 hits.
These guys should have been millionaires by this time but their label White Whale cheated them out of as much as they could. When the group left the label folded not long after.
Ever hear a song this good come out in this day and age? Never! Great stuff!
From the really fun summer of 67, The Turtles had this big hit. I was 14 and life was great. I see a RIckenbacker being played. Great vocals. Drive Inn movies, swimming and great music on the radio!
All night skating💕
I’ve been literally listening to this song every night for the past six months… I ain’t kidding!… seriously every night!… I don’t go to bed until I hear it!!!…. Thank you!!!
2nd comment I've seen like this. What's with all the compulsive behavior?!
Me too!
Loved them from kiddo on up! If I’m ever having a bad day, this song is a great pick-me-up! Turtles and the Monkees should be in the R&R Hall of Fame. This performance was so smooth and engaging. The 60s hippies colors in the background are awesome too!
You've got a second vote in that nomination. Anyone who was young during that period,(1967), could not avoid the ubiquity of those two acts. The Monkees, The Turtles and yes, Paul Revere & The Raiders were all over the place that year, and what a good one it was.
... the R & R Hall of Fame for kiddos ... lol ..
Should be named "the hall of shame." Alan Freed is turning in his grave. I live an hour away. Never been And don't want to go. SHAME ON THEM!!!!!
Just got Howard’s book can’t wait to read it!!! Love them
Howard Kalyan Is A Phenomenal Singer
He “Karaoking” The Song To The Original Recording Track .. And I Think The Drummer Is Really Playing.
Still A Great Performance !
Wonderful ! 🎉
Yes, that's a live voice echoing in the Ed Sullivan theater.
You can tell how much fun they are having.❤
My favorite turtles song of all time! I never get tired of listening to this song!
Me too. Such unbridled energy in this song. The live vocal really makes it soar.
Love the Turtles. I grew up listening to them. I was lucky in this life. ❤❤❤❤❤
Lovely voice - so musical and natural - no straining and puffing.
I probably saw this watching Ed Sullivan with my Grandmother when I was 3 years old...It's still a great song to this day and the only Turtles song that has stood the test of time....The great vocal style here is very similar to other singers from that era John Sebastian And Don Ciccone (Mr Dyingly Sad)...This is the sound the Turtles should have stayed with. If you listen to their greatest hits their song styles were all over the place and mostly not sounding good. This was their one great fun song...
As a drummer, I was quite impressed and inspired by John's talent.
Great group---great tune for ANY age!
I was 16, but I'm still full of life and good health.
Thank GOD!
My father was a collector for music-industry types. He was in conversations with execs, who said more than once, that despite great talent and songs, the reason they didn’t hit bigger with the pop-loving teen set, is that they didn’t have the looks. And that fucking sucks, but on the other hand, it’s also the animal deep within us.
John Barbata and Dino Danelli of the Rascals were the 2 greatest American drummers of the 60's
1:11 Guitarist's strap breaks but he makes quick recovery. Nice going, dude.
Classic singing voice
Love how Mark Volman has a clip-on tie on his sweater.
Take me back to the 60s I had it all the girl of my dreams great music great times. I wanna go back 😫
So upbeat!! So... HAPPY TOGETHER!!! And the drum solos!! You could not help feeling good, singing along widd'um!!! '67 grad moved to little town in W-Pa, prev summer-bummer , got $100/the car for a week/didnt come home for 10, and drove to The City to viasit my cousins in The Bronx, my friends in Long Beach. Got knifed in The Bronx, a sucker punch knifing, took it off the guy, broke it across his face -- went surfing in LB, LI, NY in freezing water, and must've sang Be With Me a cp hundred times!! Great time to be 18.
Love the Turtles. Since the beginning.
stationed at Beaufort SC. Marine Air Base, '67 this song was all over the radio back then...
Mark is always fun to watch !
Love the Turtles but Mark overdid it. Show off!
He has so much energy. Excellent performance
I always thought he was crazy, but realize now he can really sing well.
Got to love the enthusiastic tambourine player!
My Mom And Dad Were Married 13 Days Later After This Broadcast ! Thanks For Putting This On !
INFECTIOUS ENERGY, UNRESTRAINED JOY, PURE TALENT, AND JUST PLAIN FUN!! VOLMAN AND KAYLAN HAD BEEN GOOD FRIENDS ALL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND IT SHOWS! EVERYBODY WAS 'ALL IN' AND LOVING IT!! GREAT 60s ROCK AND ROLL!! DO YOU BELIEVE THESE GUYS GOT INVOLVED WITH FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHERS? BELIEVE IT!
