In 2000, my 16 year old daughter came to me so excited. She heard a "new" band The Mama's and Papas. I laughed my head off....priceless. I guess the music is timeless.

Someone gave my mum tickets to see Cass at the Palladium, my dad couldn't go with her so she took the nine year old me. Didn't know who she was until that night, but I was a fan by the end of the show. She was engaging and funny all evening and even at the tender age of nine I understood what a great voice she had.
Then a couple of days later I found my mum in tears and momma Cass had gone. I was one of the lucky ones who'd seen her last show. Great loss.

@@jorger5777 Memories are such a difficult thing , especially from childhood. They were the days when people still dressed up to the nines to go to the theatre, especially the Palladium and it just seemed much more special back then.
I can't particularly remember what songs she sung, I'm pretty sure California dreaming and creeque alley were involved, probably other mamas and papas songs as well.
I just remember the quality of her voice, the clarity and melody she carried when singing.
The show was also a bit more than just her singing, she engaged with the audience, told a few tales and jokes as well. I remember her tip- toeing across the stage to much laughter just the sense that everyone was really enjoying it.
I wish I could bring the images of her singing back into my conscious and hear the songs she sang that night but unfortunately too much time has passed.

Dear Cass Elliot. Bless her heart, she took all of that on the chin with style and grace, all for the benefit of the group. She deserved so much more. I have no doubt that the Angels in heaven were happy to receive her,for she had a voice that could reign in their choir.

I heard this was a inside joke with the band. Everyone thinks they are singing about her weight but the truth was she was pregnant with her daughter and they were keeping it a secret from the public. Because of the times they thought it might hurt there career.

I was 8 when this was a hit. When it first came out our family drove from San Francisco to SoCal for our first visit to Disneyland for spring break. As we made the trip, Id search for new radio stations every 50 miles or so. It seemed that I heard this song every 30 minutes on that trip. Radio went nuts for it.

Back in 1968 or so I drove out to LA and had the pleasure of meeting Mama Cass . I was selling newspapers on a street corner ( anyone remember the LA Free Press) and she stopped by and bought a copy . She was driving a corvette if I remember correctly.

A clever song detailing the group's history . "The Mugwumps", mentioned in the lyric, were a predecessor group consisting of Denny, Cass, John and "Zal" which refers to Zal Yanovsky who became lead guitarist for the Lovin' Spoonful.

@@rslitman Yep and also McGuinn is Roger McGuinn of the Byrds and McGuire refers to Barry "Eve of Destruction" McGuire, formerly of the New Christy Minstrels. [ADDITIONS] - Wait, there's more! "Mitchy" is Michelle, as you might have guessed. Also, "the Night Owl" was a tiny café in Greenwich Village. MORE - "Duffy" was Hugh Duffy, owner of a club on Creeque Alley in the US Virgin Islands. ("Mitchy wants to go to the sea" - the Caribbean Sea) There, they were "Greasin' on AMEX", meaning they really didn't expect to pay the bill.

I'm not gonna pretend that I know this band deeply. As a kid born in 2002 way out of their time I recently found them they truely are just great. Makes me feel like I'm living I'm hollywood 1960s. Love their songs, love the vibe as they perform, love the passion they bring. Just a genuine band that I love and appreciate all they did for music

Trey, the music of the 60s was magical! As a kid in Canada back then, it was a wonderful time to grow up and come of age. Probably every generation feels this way, but from my perspective, the 1960s were the Golden Age. We definitely had the best music. You’re in for a real musical treat (a feast for the ears and the mind) as you explore more and more bands/groups from this era.If you haven’t already done so, get a guitar (my choice) and learn to play this incredible music. The Beatles are the best for a reason; however, there are a lot of great Canadian bands and solo artists to listen to and enjoy. One of the best is Ontario’s Gordon Lightfoot. Genre (folk, rock, Motown, etc) doesn’t matter when you’re listening to great music (as you’ve discovered with the Mamas and Papas). Enjoy,
