Shout out to Jim Pons, shown in white sweater at 1:30, background vocals and acoustic/bass guitar. He started in garage band The Leaves ("Hey Joe") Turtles from 1967--1970, in Frank Zappa Mothers of Invention in 1971, and with Flo and Eddie from 1971-- 1973. He is 80 years old, still doing fine!!!
One of my favorite groups of the '60's! Love their happy carefree sound! The Turtles made two appearances on the Sullivan show. On this first appearance, they sang "Happy Together" and "She'd Rather Be with Me", the latter of which has already been posted, and is really fantastic too! "Happy Together" went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was written by Garry Bonner & Alan Gordon. Fantastic post! Also, I've wanted to mention this for a while, to anyone who is interested, I'm the same Tom Smith who has been posting comments since near the start of the channel. When YT changed the handles, I chose Tom Elvis Smith as my new one because I thought it sounded more memorable than plain Tom Smith. :)
Yes, way to much perfection in the studio version with all the perfect harmonies to oull off for one song,, it was 90 percent miming back then and the singers mike is turned off as well
It seemed to me that only the singer was live. Certain segments of the song were different than the original record unless it was recorded earlier and used for the show. Which also makes sense why the other singer came over. He knew his mike wasn’t connected.
@@joes9954the guy in white seems a little erratic. He is quite animated and it’s quite noticeable how the producer seems to minimise his screen time, almost as if deliberately so. I have seen other clips where that guy carries on a bit. Would be annoying to be around 😂
To be fair, that was kind of Mark’s thing, carrying something that he only pretended to play 😂 one time he had a roll of tape and another a conductor’s baton as his “instruments”
@@drewzerna4087 But that kind of made the show, although it may have been a little much for ol' Ed. If you look at some of the videos of The Diamonds doing "Little Darlin"", one of the guys there is kind of similar.
The Turtles...one of the only bands during that era that actually played their own instruments in this song. Most bands had their music played by LA based contract band called, "The Wrecking Crew", of which Glen Campbell was a part of. Great tune.
I remember watching this. And in 1983, Flo and Eddie, aka Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, the founders of The Turtles, were playing the Boston-Cambridge area, and my roommate and I went to see them; they sounded just as good.
By 67, some groups still played totally live (Doors, Cowsills) while others did live vocals over pre recorded backing tracks (Stones). I’m not sure who made the decision as to who did what. The live stuff was so much better and it’s a shame they phased it out.
This was probably more a function of the musical and instrumental complexity of the songs being performed than a strict policy by the Ed Sullivan Show. It's also helpful to remember that studio recording technology during this era was advancing at such a rate that sounds were being created on record that couldn't easily be recreated in live performance. Heavy-production songs like "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" or "Good Vibrations" would've been all but impossible to perform live without the aid of some pre-recorded tracks. It would be interesting, though, to know who most often had the final say as to whether a backing track would be used or not.

they were horrible when I saw them about 15 years ago, Peter Noone and his hermits blew them away. All HowardKaylan and Mark Vollman did was rap about madonna. There was about 20 minutes of music and 30 minutes of corny jokes. And their backup band was lousy
I was born in 74 and remember hearing this song as well as many others while my dad had the radio going on a local channel that played this era. I always felt I should have been in my late teens or early 20s to be able to be apart of this generation and enjoy it in person. Brings me so much joy listening to it.
