    The main character is what you might call "the mind". It's mastery, it's capacity to represent. Throughout history, attempts have been made to contain those experiences which happen at the edge of the limit where the mind is vulnerable. But I think we are in a very significant moment in history. Those moments, those what you might call liminal, limit, frontier, edge zone experiences are actually now becoming the norm. These multiplicities and distinctions and differences that have given great difficulty to the old mind are actually through entering into their very essence, tasting and feeling their uniqueness. One might make a breakthrough to that common something that holds them together.
    And so the main character is, to this new mind, greater, greater mind. A mind that yet is to be. And when we are obviously entered into that mode, you can see a radical subjectivity, radical attunement to individuality, uniqueness to that which the mind is, opens itself to a vast objectivity. So the story is the story of the cosmos now. The moment is not just a passing, empty nothing yet. And this is in the way in which these secret passages happen. Yes, it's empty with such fullness that the great moment, the great life of the universe is pulsating in it. And each one, each object, each place, each act Leaves a mark. And that story is singular. But, in fact, it's story after story.

      I've never liked being inside, or near screens or speakers when I'm tripping. Abd now I'm almost 40 with three kids and that season has passed. That is to say, I never watched it tripping, but watched it during a season of frequent psychedelic use (1999-2003) that very much shaped the way I still see the world.

    At the time, even this movie came out, I very much agreed with the character in this scene- that the way people thought and perceived was evolving. But then at the horizon of that, we entered the age of smart phones, social media etc and I watched those kinds, and the minds of their children become blunted and shallow.

  • @gud3742
    @gud3742 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    They looked forward to that moment with joy, but without haste, not pining for it, but seeming to have a foretaste of it in their hearts, of which they talked to one another. But when they looked at me with their sweet eyes full of love, when I felt that in their presence my heart, too, became as innocent and just as theirs, the feeling of the fullness of life took my breath away, and I worshipped them in silence. Their children were the children of all, for they all made up one family.

    He's right and we're seeing it play out in real time. Our evolurionary journey has been one of increasing complexity constantly building on itself. Culturally we've been gravitatating to more and more extreme forms of self-expression in everything from fashion to entertainment to literature. Modern, market economics have been, the driving engine behind this myth of American "rugged individualism" and we can all see the direction that's going. Personally, I think that the buck will stop somewhere and we'll see an eventual return to collectivist and traditionalist social systems either out of necissisty (due to an ecological collapse) or out of a shared cultural interest in pursuing a higher, immaterial kind of meaning. Think about it. Post-modernism handed us the keys to the candy store. We've reached the peaks and valleys of creative expression. We've hacked our own evolution in the ways we've altered our environment. We've explored and deconstructed everything to the point where are no original ideas to be had anymore. What's left after you've had everything?

      Well said. This is the best part of the movie for me. The more I return to this film the more I see how it is limited by the whiteness of its creators. Lots of pick yourself up by your bootstraps liberalism. Yes we are individuals with some degree of autonomy but there are also oppressive systems that need dismantling in order to realize human potential. So much focus on “neo-human evolution” but how is this message supposed to hit for someone wrongly imprisoned and forced to do slave labor? Conceiving of the world in a vacuum is how you wind up with Alex Jones on the big screen.

    • @augustlongpre64
      @augustlongpre64 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I was just pleasantly surprised to read your comment because, like I said before, many people draw some disheartening conclusions from this film such as culling the weak or falling for the myth of over population which of course necessitates genocide of non white peoples.

    It seems to me that this ties in with the telescoping evolution clip from earlier in the movie. Is the argument essentially that as we become more individual and as our perceived worlds become more subjective, we collectively become more objective, unified, powerful etc? That the “progression” to a more complete and proper understanding of the world and each other begins with each individual attaining a more detailed and nuanced understanding of themselves?

      I watched this clip right after that one just now actually I remember when I was still a kid one of my childhood friends showed me this and we watched it a few times because I couldn't grasp the concepts at that age well I knew these things couldn't be approached in a completely literal sense of what they were saying but to look at them figuratively as well but being a kid I was quick to settle with the little bits I could understand but now that I've gained this sense of gratitude for learning and I strongly yearn for wisdom and knowledge I come back to this and it's just so so rewarding the concepts and ideas you come to ponder and discourse with others really leads to both growth within yourself and the universe as a whole.. duality is fascinating and I thank it for connecting all of us here dispite of our individual locations in time and space.

      Story Teller It reminds me of meditative experiences where your sense of self dissolves or relaxes. There are stages to absorption where bliss and pleasure come to you and you feel some type of special achievement, but further down you let go of that and embrace the formlessness which is kind of like a paradox. Buddhists call them jhanas.

      I hear two parts:
      1. In the past, we were not exploring the edges of the mind. It turns out we were finding the center of mankind (and possibly the universe).
      2. Everything leaves a mark - everyting is meaningful, forever.
