    I live in Australia, where summer temperatures can get up to 110F or more. I use OW-20 in a European car, that I drive and 5W-30 in an Asian car that my wife drives, without any issues.
    With modern synthetic oils , those low viscosity oils are fine.
    The "experts" who claim that these oils are not suitable in heat, still have their heads stuck in the days of old fashioned mineral oils, where thinner oils were not recommended for use in hot climates.
    Just keep the oil changes up to manufacturers recommended intervals, or even earlier, and you won't have a problem.

    hello from Dominican Republic.
    I recently bought a Toyota Vitz imported from japan. the engien hood says 0W16 and the manual too. my car is only 61,000 KM. i always used 0W16 and my country is really hot up to 38 C.
    Manual says 0W16 from manufacture and 0w16/0w20 for best economy. and up to 10W30.
    in the summer i will switch to 0W20 always Toyota OEm Oil Full Syntethic
    Many mechanics say to use 5W30 for my country. but my mechanic told me to continue using 0W16 or 0W20 since my engine is designed for that viscosity.

    I just switched my 21' Ford EcoSport 2.0 duratec engine to Mobil 1 EP 0W-20 with a Fram Synthetic Endurance oil filter (similar to Amsoil's) for the cold months in MI. I had Warren Distribution's 5W-30 synthetic in it with a taller Purolator Boss (400s equivalent) oil filter. I did not like how the duratec was warming up TOO quickly on cold starts. I did not like how it slightly decreased acceleration either.
    My coolant reservoir level looks like it may have risen a little from running the 5W-30. That has me a little concerned. Idk these things, but I did my best to use the correct oil and filter size this time. A viscosity that the manual says is okay for winter time. I will try M1's 5W-20 EP in June. Oh, well. I thought I'd try a more 'robust' viscosity. My engine did not benefit from it. I don't mess with lab stuff and will just run what it says from now on. I was told by an engineer and master mechanic that if the oil on the dipstick doesn’t ignite from a lighter, then the oil is fine enough and not to fuss about it. Dealing with GDI is what it is.

    • @ptichfirich
      @ptichfirich 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The fact is higher viscosity will always be a more stable wear preventer. That is universally true. But depending on the engine it neverthless is smart to follow their viscosity requirement. But sometimes the rating prescribed for an engine can be stated because of regulatory requirements in some markets - this is why it is good to search for what oils manufacturer recommends in other markets that have lower regulatory requirements. If an engine's oil recommendation/prescription in Japanese or Chinese or Russian market for example says it's fine to use 0/5-30 or 0/5-40 for example this is a signal their engine can work fine with higher viscosity oils and may benefit from better wear protection. Some engines with very tight tolerances would be less happy with a higher viscosity. Although most of 0/5W-30 oils aren't that much "thicker" for most engines.
      But to your question specifically - yopu may benefit with faster oil flow in the winter, but that would become a more apparent benefit with lower outside temperatures. If your winters rarely have constant periods of temperatures below -10 celsius it would maybe be of some tangible benefit with engine reaching full lubrication faster with 0W-20, especially if you would do shorter trips in those conditions. Otherwise you need not complicate things with those oil changes. There is some potential benefit, but not enough to be so dilligent with it.
      Edit: I do realise that 20 viscosity grade oils have anti-wear additeves that prevent the lower viscosity's higher wear risk. Problem is those additives get used up through the oil change interval. Shorter oil change intervals (than the manual suggests) prevent the loss of ant-wear properties, sure. But what is the benefit of thinner oils then? They're supposed to lower fuel consumption - but cost-wise and emissions-wise it doesn' add up if you use more engine oil because you do more frequent oil changes. The consumption isn't that much lower anyway from 5W-30. I do not notice it.

      0W-20 is the recommended viscosity called for in the maintenance manual and is what you should always use. What's important is to use a good quality oil.

    Thanks for debunking another myth, people are spreading use 0w40 in hot climates and whatnot.

    Im not a mechanic or an engineer. This is just my opinion / theory... Example lets say BMW or any car for that matter. Cars have a cooling system, thermostat, radiator etc.. this keeps the car engine in tempature range in the hot climates, so yes the car may run a bit hotter in summer, but not to much more... lets say you have a BMW M car. These are cars are for racing and have oil collers and other technology for tracking, and running hard. Just my opinion. I think its more important to use the recomended 0w20, or what ever the manufacture recomends, and change your oil and filter ahead of time, and make sure your coolant / anti freeze is fresh.... depending in the type of car, and what i do with it . i change the coolant every year, or every two years max. ...oil depending on wich one i use and what i use the car for 3 to 5k max. Even with Amsoil Signature... i know its a bit obsesive perhaps, but i feel better , and like to keep my cars long term, and enjoy working on them. This oractice has worked well for me. Im open to opinions though.

      Why do you use signature series which is not a euro formula for your BMW? Second, why 5k max, it should 3k max due to fuel dilution.

    • @ericsivilla4091
      @ericsivilla4091 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @repairvehicle on the BMW i do 3 to 3,500 max. On my other car, i go 5k. Dodge challenger non gdi engine 6.4 hemi.
      On the BMW 2.0 turbo, i started using euro and changed to signature... Amsoil no longer recommends 0W20 euro for the 2024 B48 engine, nor do they recommend Euro. According to BMW, if you can't get the LL-01 oil, you can use Api SN, but LL-01 is preferred. So I see in Amsoils web site the Signature series is good for Lspi, it's Amsoils best oil. Do you feel i should go back to the Euro ?

      @repairvehicle hello Sir, thanks for your reply. I have a 2024 rear wheel drive 530i g60 mild hybrid msport with a 2.0 liter Turbo, B48 Gdi engine.
      If you can recomend the best fluids for my car, and viscocity for my car engine, differential, and zf8hp transmision. I don't care if they have a long life BMW certification or not. If the fluids, and oils are compatible and exceed the manufactures recommendations that is more important to me. Preventative medicine. I don't care about the cost.

  • @xlightssx
    @xlightssx 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It all depends on the type of driving you do, climate, terrain, and your bearing clearances. But yes there are times you need to increase your viscosity but it’s usually in extreme cases.

    What people need to remember is this isn't caveman mentality where THICKER OIL BETTER THINNER OIL NO BETTER..
    Viscosity doesn't protect your engine, film & shear strength with a quality oil does!! Viscosity helps it travel to its final destination the quickest and at what speed.
    Slower thicker speed can equal less protection, create more heat & bearing wear with an adverse affect.
    0w20 oil today has numerous protection packages with a better flow rate that actually reduces heat covering more area quicker without sacrificing protection & is rated up to 104 outside temperature.
    I want someone to show me 1 instance where a motor was fried early using 0w20 where 0w20 was called for on that motor.
    Keep your old school mentality and run your thicker oils ignoring engineers while molasses is coursing slowly through the veins of your engine possibly affecting your VVT timing & yes tolerances & passages are smaller now than 1980. 4 cylinders are pushing 250hp etc.,,..
    0w20 actually has additives that help protect better than 0w30 and at cold start up the 0w20 leaves a film behind so its not just metal on metal... 0w20 is year round for all temps!!!. Do what your manual says..

    People always parrot what they hear but those same people can never back up their claims. Also people always make general statements on things , such as that product is not good or you should never do this or that, but when I ask them why….all I get are crickets. As a retired Auditor, I need cold hard facts and not opinions.

    “But, but, but, but people typing in the comments say otherwise!!” 😜
    My 2021 4Runner TRD ORP has had 0W20 since it left the factory and it’s more than sufficient. It just happens to be what the manufacturer states I should use. Also says I can use 5w20 but it calls for 0W20 so that’s what I use and I’ve had no issues. I change every 5k miles because I don’t want to go 10k miles because I want my truck to be my last purchase and it very well can be provided some idiot doesn’t drive recklessly and cause my insurance company to total my beloved yota 4Runner of course. Now someone will reply to my comment saying “you shouldn’t use 0w20 because blah blah blah and I work for blah and I know everything” but that’s ok. I’ll continue my 5k oil changes and continue using 0W20.
    Good stuff brother!
    God bless~

      So you believe the manual / engineers when they say use 0W-20 but you do not believe them when they say to go 10k? I choose to not believe either.

    • @KendrasEdge757
      @KendrasEdge757 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @ using 0w20 or 5w20 is an almost incomparable choice….changing your oil at 5k vs 10k mile intervals has significantly different results. Not in four years so if someone buys a new vehicle every 4-5 years than it doesn’t matter which you do. If you plan on keeping the vehicle for 10+ years and hundreds of thousands of miles, I’d suggest you change your oil every 12mos/5k miles whichever comes first.
      If you change it at 2500 miles every 3mos and use conventional oil or change it every 2years/20k miles and re-use the oil filter every other oil change….i don’t really care bruh. Do whatever you want. Ain’t my ride and ain’t my money.
