    The dress looks beautiful! Worth all the effort. I appreciate how you bring the focus back on the real 'makers' of garments in clothing brands, inspiring more people to look into who makes their clothes and to avoid exploitative fashion brands!

    You did a wonderful job! I love how you compare the cost of the actual labor and materials to the commercially made garment. It's so interesting and helps in trusting brands that pay fairly.

      There's a new elastic thread from Germany called Saraflex you can wind it on a bobbin but you have to go slow or you'll warp it

    Beautiful dress, Janelle. Aided by the fact that you always seem to find the perfect fabric. And, yes, darn it, sewing does take time, effort and resources. Fashion and sewing has really flipped, compared to the past, where sewing was more fundamental and necessary, if you wanted affordable clothing! But it is nice to see a clothing company which teaches the value of clothes.

    Dress came out beautiful. How ever I don't think people sew each shirring line manually like we do in homes. There are large smocking machine that can sew about 20 lines at one time. I used to work in a garment factory and thats what they use for smocking details

  • @ginaburgess9759
    @ginaburgess9759 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This is a gorgeous make and you wear it well. Unfortunately in many cases, the people who sew the garments do not get paid in accordance with the price tag. It would be worth that price if you were making it to sell yourself.

    • @RoseryApparel
      @RoseryApparel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you 🧡 Yeah, that’s unfortunately true.. it is nice to see a brand charge a more realistic price though. I’ve seen many dresses similar for often less than $100 which is just crazy! Fast fashion has really devalued the cost/effort that goes into making garments 👎🏻

  • @1jmass
    @1jmass 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is truly amazing. You just cut rectangles, shirr them, and sew them together. Add sleeves and you are done! Well, not exactly, but your explanation and demo definitely make it worth trying.
    I do have two questions.
    What happens if your bobbin runs out of elastic thread in the middle of a row? How would you keep the ends from “unstitching”?
    When you sew the tiers together, do you make sure to avoid sewing over the shirring stitches?

    • @RoseryApparel
      @RoseryApparel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good questions! When I run out of shirring elastic, I simply re-wind the bobbin and then back-stitch over the last few stitches to keep them in place. I always check how much elastic is left before I start a new row though, as it is better to do the full row without running out of elastic. As for the tiers, I actually stitch along the first row of shirring. It doesn’t matter if you sew over the shirring stitches 😊

    Where are the pockets on the dress? Thank you for a really good job explaining how to cut, sew and construct the dress - it looks lovely on you! I wish you had put your hands in the pockets when modelling it... because I can't figure out where the pockets are. My mother had a rather pricey Laura Ashley dress that looked very similar to this, back in the 80s (no pockets in that one) and I've always hankered for a dress like hers. Finding this is like discovering a gem!! I'm very tempted to give it a go :) Thanks so much!!

      @@RoseryApparel Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'll definitely give this project a shot. I watched you put together a Laura Ashley pattern after this video. From the looks of it Laura Ashley used a lot of fabric in her dresses. My mother made me two summer outfits (a pillowcase dress and a shirred dress with frilled sleeves) - one from each of the tiers. I prefer the gingham fabric. that you selected for your dress, to the fussy floral Ashley prints... Your channel is an inspiration. Thanks for posting.

    I really enjoyed following your thought process. The onle thing I might change were I to make this dress would be for the bust 'tube' to make it longer by the under but to widest bust point than the back. This would, of course, entail doing quite a bit of maths for the distances between the horizontal shirring lines. The question being, would it be worth it?

    Love this! Quick question: to add each tier, did you baste the layers to make them fit into the previous one? Or did the shirring shrink it down enough for it to fit perfectly with the previous layer? It just seemed so much bigger and I was so amazed if you did it without basting lol. Thank you!!

    Your dress is better. The skirt part is fuller and looks nice with hemmed top of each tier.
