I just want to mention for other beginners that one step skipped over in this video that I learned the hard way is that when working with elastic thread, you only use it in the bobbin, and you use regular thread up top. It was only after a lot of snapped elastic thread that I realized this, and looked it up elsewhere.
I tried something similar to this a few weeks ago and it was so simple and fun to make. For the end of the sleeves, instead of inserting an elastic, I added a few rows of shirring a few inches above the hem, and it became a really pretty, romantic sleeve.

Okay so here is a tip if you have an HOURGLASS or PEAR shape and you are making this dress! (Please learn from my mistakes!) I used my bust measurements rather than my hip measurements, shirred for at least three hours and now have a dress that doesn't fit ;_: Super sad as I had been looking forward to this one and had some really nice fabric that is all made up into a dress I cannot wear ;_; Big hipped people take note!
What about ladies with large bust? I worry that if I do the shirring on my bust measurements then it'll be baggy around my waist, how can I combat this?

If you’ve got a brother machine and are super frustrated with trying to get your machine to properly shir - TH-cam it for your machine - I had to tighten my bobbin case with a tiny screw - tried every other combo of tension/stitch length/ and elastic winding …bobbin tighten was the only thing that worked😂
Well, maybe I need to do this. Went through bobbin after bobbin and finally finished, but it didn't shrink down enough and it's too big. Falls right down my chest :(
OMG I bought these fabric shears years ago, they're incredible and I got a free pair of snips with them too that are still super sharp years later. I think I'd cry if I lost the little snips.

This is so beautiful and so much more simple than the other tutorials I've watched for this style - makes me think I can actually do it! Did you shirr the bust area in a spiral (continuous all the way down?) Or did you shirr lines and stop and cut the thread after each line?

Love the dress, this is the first time im ever doing a dress. Only problem i have is that my sleeves ended up being so massive ! Dont know what i did wrong but they are a bit ridiculous lol. Definitely going to try again another time.

Would you mind sharing how long it took you to make this (are we talking about a day or are we talking a week)? I'm pretty impatient, so I just need to make sure I don't start something that will take me more than 3 days because I know (from experience) that I am unlikely to follow through on that kind of project 😅
I’ve started making this and I’m about half way through the shirring but there’s no way it’s going to gather up enough to be small enough. Is it definitely the bust measurement for the width of each of the body rectangles as that would require the shirring to shrink it to half the size to be able to fit the bust measurement? Please help!!
Half way through mine didn’t look like it would gather enough either, but every row of shirring gathers up the fabric more and it will eventually shrink to half the size. If not, then your tension needs tweaking. Did you do a practice sample piece like I show in the video? Also, don’t forget the steam trick, as that shrinks the shirring too 😊
Love this, Im a beginner and just wandering What is a normal amount of fabric to buy for a dress like this? And also do you need special needles for the elastic?
