Thanks, I've got a MS311. It cuts great with 20" bar, and I believe I'll stay with a 20" bar for my purposes. I've also got a Stihl 182 with a 16" bar, which works good enough or pruning jobs.
Nice video. I’m in the market for a new shtil I have a 024 that’s going on 40 yrs old starting to slow down It has done me well. Have it since we got our deer camp
Wow, 40 years! That saw doesn’t owe you a thing…if you’re looking for weight savings, go with a pro grade saw if it’s in budget. The MS311 is good value for HP, but it’s a pretty heavy chainsaw.
I got a 362 pro saw with a 20" bar. The dealer was pushing a 36" bar at me, but I was able to refuse. He seemed frustrated. My next bar will be an 18". I want my saw to work with ease. I may have to go around big tree trunks, but my saw will enjoy it. Not to mention my arms will as well.
I bought one with a 20 and it’s been decent. But it seems like I need more oil. Opened the oiler all the way up and past the 1/4 turn. I didn’t know it was only a 1/4 turn. Flagg mentioned that on his channel. That is can be reset if you go past the 1/4 turn. Wasn’t much of a stop. Wish it had said 1/4 turn only. Added a 661 also for when more power is needed.
Great video. I'm looking at an MS 311 with 20in bar to retire my old 029. Not sure the comparison would be as close with the hard woods I'll be cutting though.
I think that would be a perfect option. I’ve cut maple with the 18” bar and it cuts through with no issues. I should have done a hardwood comparison, but at the time I didn’t have any log length.
Was that a regular full comp chain, or was it a full skip chain? I'm looking for a chain for my ms311. It runs a full skip wonderfully, but on stihl's website, it says that a full skip chain is no longer available. I'm concerned about putting a non skip chain on it with a 25 inch bar because I've heard that it won't pull it very well.
I run a regular full comp chain. It’s a bit sluggish on big cuts, but for bucking smaller stuff where at least 50% of the chain is not in the wood, it does fine.
It gets a little better once the break in period is over, but I agree that it’s slightly underpowered for a 25 inch bar. I think a 20 inch bar would be the sweet spot.
I never understood why everybody wants their chainsaw to be super fast I would rather have a torque saw to pull wood chips. Sthil really never made there saws to be fast.. fast is Husqvarna.. torque is Stihl.. the ms311 was to be set at 13,500rpm if I remember correctly the fastest sthil I have and run a 20" bar tirn up the oiler tho with full Chisel skip and eats Locus logs nothing pulls like my 038mag full port job 32" bar skip chain full Chisel. Don't mean to blab.
This is a funny vid as the bit of wood you are cutting is the same size . So there should really be no difference ..... try say a 18 inch diameter log with the 18inch bar and them say a 25inch diameter log with the 25inch bar and see how that goes ...as like I said with the same small size of wood there is no difference as the with the test you did chain speed same and same amount of teeth cutting.
It doesn’t matter how big the tree is it’s how big the bar and chain is that’s why the faster skip chain has less teeth that’s why when u have a 20 inch bar and go to a 16 or a 18 it cuts twice as fast
@RedRider763 you are talking absolutely nonsense pal . If you are cutting a 10inch diameter piece of wood with a 16 18 or 20 inch bar there is no difference as the sprocket is still moving the same amount of chain per rotation, also the same amount of teeth are in the wood cutting, but apparently you can't argue with stupid
@RedRider763 if you were cutting say a 30inch diameter log with 16 18 20 24 bars then yes certainly there would be differences as all of each bars would be in the wood cutting therefore all would be using different amount of teeth cutting at the time . Its common sense ffs
@@richardsneddon2976 I’m sorry bud but no this is the way chainsaws work ok u ready to listen alright first the longer the bar the more teeth wich means it takes more power to turn it so it cuts a little slower thats it

@@treestandmanoutdoors yes the 024 is a little heavy as well.
31 years old is hardly close to 40
Did you figure out what kind of tree it was?
Punky wood…lol. If I were to guess, maybe Eastern Cottonwood based on the bark, but it was at the house when we bought it, so I have no clue.

How do you like the 661? I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a big bore saw even though I probably don’t need it…lol

I got 2 ECHO CS 590/591 SHINDIAWA, BILT TO THE HILT. I don't use my 24 bar till I need it, I like the 20 better and need to get 18.
I agree with you, my saw with the 18 inch is much more responsive and cuts noticeably faster. I only bring out the 24”/25” bar for special projects.

I may look for an aftermarket full skip chain that fits, because it would be nice to have those higher RPMs when cutting big stuff.
Ok, that would be great
@@donaldbower4097 3676 005 0084 is the model number for the full skip Stihl 25” chain. I was able to find one on eBay.
Awesome, thank you
Thats seams correct to me ive tried this got a 24 inch bar with a saw pinched it went to a 20 gee it cuts quick with it
Yea, the 18” stays on my saw now and the 25” only comes out for special projects.
