How to fix latency problem with USB MIDI keyboard / controller recording FL Studio 20 - [SOLVED]

  • Today is the appendix for the video from last Saturday, where I noticed problems with latency using MIDI recording from Yamaha PSR S670 in FL Studio 20 software with quantization enabled.
It was surprising that Audio #ASIO drivers have impact on MIDI Recording but yes they have.
In this video you will find the solution and some tips to the annoying #latency problem - a delay between you hit key on external MIDI controller and the moment of registration in the Piano Roll.
The first part about looping and MIDI recording in FL Studio is here:
    • FL Studio 20 - How to ...
If you need to know more about latency - what causes it and how to avoid it I recommend you this article:

If you are interested in other videos about FL Studio or Cubase please refer to my channel:

If you are using a Focusrite interface, the right setting is "Focusrite USB Asio" and not "FL Studio Asio". The latter will still give you latency.

Go to Audio Settings -> Set FL Studio ASIO Device.
Change Sample rate (Hz) to 192000.
And press on Show ASIO panel -> Click on 256.

OK, thanks but you need to be aware that higher sample rate results in bigger WAV sizes and require much powerful CPU. Basically here you do the trick that speed up sample rate (warp time) but the size (in samples) is same. If your PC can handle this without grinding and shredding the audio - it great.

If you are using a focusrite 2i2, plug a speaker or headphones in to the 2i2, go to options>audio setting>input/output>focusrite asio. Then on the asio panel you can set the buffer length to 1ms (16). I was struggling with this for ages but I was playing through the laptops audio it only allows for a minimum of 6ms buffer length with fl studio asio, so when I was playing with a guitar the delay was too much. This solved the problem for me, hope that helps!

    @prodbysen 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

for all people learning about this you can lower the latency even more with asio4all driver or if you have an interface with the audio driver of your interface and lowering the buffer size, because smallest possible buffer on FL studio asio is 256, asio4all and interface audio drivers will let you go lower than this for even less latency
this is needed for recording vocals if the singer wants to here the audio while it's being recorded, I usually set mine to 64 when recording vocals
but be aware, if you have too much going in your project (many effects for example) with a very small buffer like this it will cause problems like lagging and producing audio cracks
Just record with a low latency, don't use much effects in this phase and after recording set it to 256 or higher again
If you have audio problems in general which are caused by too many effects going on you can also try a bigger buffer like 512 or 1024, this helps sometimes

@@rikogreen7596 RAM should not impact latency. There're basically three important factors (as long as the MIDI interface is ok) 1) Use an ASIO driver, 2) Use a small buffer setting, but you don't have to go nuts (256 should be fine) and 3) Plug-ins, something that people forget. An analog plug-in for instance could add tens of ms and it's the total fx chain that matters. With latency I mean time from key press to heard sound. Then there's the matter of getting the notes aligned in the playlist/pianoroll when recording, that's a different problem. So what do you have problems with?

@@svensvensson8102 dude my problem is the second one you said. The alignment of the notes in the piano roll, I always have to fix it by hand but it's stupid I could just have wrote the part by hand.

@@gusgus420 Ok, have you tried the Audio settings->offset slider. You can use it to move midi data later or earlier. Turn the metronome on, tap to the beat and adjust until it's lined up. Exact placement depends on you as well of course :)

It actually works, even tho there where some minor bugs on windows 11, i managed to hear what I am pressing without delay. Any good piano plugins for FL? I have digital piano, cheap one, and would love to improve sound quality when I play.
