This is the most in-depth, well-explained and thorough video I've seen on audio latency. He explains it so well, that it helped me fix my latency problems on my electronic drumset w/o him having to even use one. This man is legitimately TEACHING the material from rudimentary basics to the types of hardware required.
    .
15/10, this man saved my recording problems entirely 🙌

most important on Windows system is the OS optimisation :
    General optimisation Windows 10 PC
    1. Set your computer's power for high performance
If your computer is set to conserve energy, the CPU may not be running at full speed all of the time. This can have a detrimental effect on your computer's audio performance. To set your computer's power for high performance:
    - Go to: Control Panel>Power Options
    - Choose "High Performance"
    - Then click the "Change plan settings" button. Make sure both power options are set to "Never".
    2. Disable system sounds
System sounds can interrupt audio applications. Ensure that they are disabled by doing the following:
    - Go to control panel and select "Sound"
    - Go to the sounds tab
    - Under sounds scheme, select "No sounds"
    - Click "Apply" then, "OK"
    3. Set processor scheduling to "Background services"
This will improve the performance of your audio drivers on your computer. To do this:
    - In control panel select "system"
    - Go to "Advanced system settings" and then the "Advanced" tab
    - Click on "Settings.." under Performance to bring up the "Performance Options" window.
    - Go to the "Advanced" tab and set processor scheduling as "Background Services"
    - Click "Apply" then "OK"
    4. Disable 'Windows Background Apps'
Windows 10, by default, runs a number of Apps in the background, regardless of whether you are using them.
Select 'Settings' from the Windows Start menu, select 'Privacy', then select 'Background Apps'. From here switch 'Off' the apps that you do not believe you are using, or that you do not wish to run in the background when you are not using the program.
    5. Disable 'Windows updates from more than one place'
Navigate to 'Settings' in the Windows Start Menu.
    Then select:
Update & Security -> Advanced Options -> Choose how updates are delivered -> Turn the slider from 'ON' to 'OFF'.
    USB optimisation:
If you're using a USB interface then we'd also recommend checking the following settings:
    1) In the device manager (Right-click the Windows icon > Device Manager), in the Universal Serial Bus controllers section, right click each USB Root Hub, choose Properties > Power Management and untick the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option.
    2) Next, right-click the Windows Icon > Power Options. Set both "Screen" and "Sleep" options here to 'Never'.
Set the Power Scheme to High Performance (if this setting is not available, click on "Additional Power Settings" on the right side of the screen).
Then click on Change plan settings. On the next page set both "Turn off the display" and "Put the computer to sleep" to "Never".
    3) Then click Change advanced power settings. In the window that opens make sure you have the following settings: Hard disc > Turn off hard disk after > Setting (Minutes) = Never
Sleep > Sleep after > Setting (Minutes) = Never
USB settings > USB selective suspend setting > Setting = Disabled
Display > Turn off display after > Setting (Minutes) = Never
Processor power management > Minimum processor state > Setting = 100%
Processor power management > Maximum processor state > Setting = 100%
Please note, not all options are available on all machines.
    Advanced optimisation:
If you wish to optimise your system further, or you are using a system that is particularly lacking in resources you can follow the tips below for advanced optimisation.
    Disable Sleep/Hibernate mode
Sleep and Hibernate mode can cause problems on some systems. There are various sleep/hibernate states that different computers use and some system/device drivers may not work well when the computer comes out of these modes. If at all possible, it's worth disabling these modes to see if that improves your system's performance
Sleep mode can be disabled by following steps 2 and 3 in the 'USB Optimisation' section above. This will prevent your computer automatically going to sleep (you should then avoid deliberately selecting 'Sleep' or 'Hibernate' from the Power Options menu).
Disable Windows Firewall, anti-virus and spyware software
If you're able to run your system without connecting to the internet then these should all be disabled to ensure that no interferences occur during audio recording or playback and to ensure that maximum resources are available. To remain secure while your firewall and antivirus disabled, it is advisable to disconnect from any internet connections when working with audio. This will also make sure that no network adapters are conflicting with any audio drivers.
    Disable Visual effects
The visual features in Windows 10 can use resources that could otherwise help to improve audio performance. As a start, it is good idea to disable some of the visual features by doing the following:
    - Bring back up the "Performance Options" window by following step 3 above and clicking on the "Visual Effects" tab and selecting "custom".
    - Untick: "Animate windows when minimising and maximising" to help prevent glitches when minimising and maximising. You can also experiment with disabling other visual effects in the custom list to see how they improve audio performance.
    - Once finished, press "OK"
If you wish to optimise your Windows 10 graphics for the best performance use the "Adjust for best performance" option.
    Disable Network cards
Sometimes, network card drivers can cause problems with audio. A good troubleshooting step is to try disabling your network adapters in Device Manager, and then test local audio (like an .mp3) and see if you continue to have issues. This is also a good optimisation step in general. Disabled adapters can easily be re-enabled at any point.
    Disable Windows services
One way in which you can make more resources available to improve audio performance, is to disable unnecessary Windows 10 services as these use valuable resources. The following site has a comprehensive guide to the services running on Windows 10 and helps locate the services that are safe to disable: Windows 10 Service Configurations by Black Viper
Please note that we would recommend that disabling Windows services should be done only by advanced users.
If you are still experiencing audio performance problems after optimising your computer for audio, please Contact Technical Support
    Disable Fast Boot
Some users may experience an issue where audio becomes slowed down after booting the computer. This is fixed by disabling fast boot.

Thanks for the extensive information!. I'm curious where you got the information from. I have to use my same laptop for general usage as well as music recording. Do you happen to have a "Short List" of what is absolutely necessary to optimize for music recording?
FYI - I just installed ASIO4ALL ver. 2.14 on my laptop Dell PC running Cakewalk by Bandlab and using the included VST Software Instrument "SI - String Section 1." I played the VST using my external MIDI keyboard controller, and was able to play it without any dropouts, clicks, or distortion using a 128 sample rate. That gave me a latency of 2.9msec. As far as my initial tests go, I'm astounded at how well ASIO4ALL worked!

My best advice is do a test with your own equipment and compare the latency you experience with a brand new empty song to adding a track to large song with 20 or so tracks. For me there was a huge difference in latency on an empty set compared to a large song with many tracks. There were no settings I could change to fix it, turning off plugins didn't fix it. What I learned to do is if I'm having latency issues while recording a new track in a large song I bounce everything down to a single track, save it out to a new version and then record the additional parts on that file. Then take those new parts into the full version for mixing. A bit of a pain but the latency is sometimes too much to bear especially if trying to play 8th notes.

One thing that can help that was glossed over is to reduce or eliminate background processes that DO NOT need to be running while processing audio. This varies from computer to computer, based on your software installs and platform (also: I hate the assumption we all use Macs, but that's another topic). There are guides out there to help you do that, but it can REALLY impact your DAW stability and reduce unwanted glitches. A lean OS is always, always, always your friend in music production. Don't use your music computer for garbage, surfing, downloading or testing software.

GNU/Linux distributions (and UNIX systems like BSD, etc.) have:
ALSA, JACK (makes it able to basically connect/route almost anything to anything, like a virtual kind of patchbay, both signals going in as out, as 'in the box', including MIDI signals), Pulseaudio (supports surround and audio over networking and such, most modern audio tricks, but not really used for audio production itself) & OSS.
Just like Mac OS X - OS X is a UNIX system, Linux is UNIX-like, they 'tune' to the same standard called 'POSIX', so much functionality is very similar - , most soundcards/audio interfaces work 'out of the box' on Linux systems, especially those which are 'class compliant'.
Linux operating systems are cool in a sense as certain drivers (for lots of peripherals, not talking solely about sound here) are included in the kernel itself - Linux is a 'kernel', not an operating system, a kernel in short words is the very basis of an operating system - as so called 'kernel modules'.
I'm an open-source fanboy or something, that's why I state it here.

Excellent explanation! I do have one question. When using VSTs, those are originating in the computer and going to the audio interface only to go out the monitors. What is causing the clicks and pops when playing the VSTs (and I don't even mean recording, just live playing the VST with the MIDI keyboard) in this case, the CPU or the audio interface?

Go to Option _ Reaper preferences_Device_Then tjek if Audio system is set to ASIO and tjek if Asio driver is set to Komplete audio Asio driver and not ASIO4ALL this should stop the clicks and pops :o)

I’m confused do I need a sound card to reduce latency on a plug-in? Like I have plugins that uses latency like linear phase EQ and linear phase multiband Do I need a Saffire pro 40 I’m lost

Can you make a video on how to combat ground loop noise and static noise? I can hear noise from my speaker when I move the mouse.

iono if you've already fixed this but for anybody getting into this problem, make sure the cables you buy are Speaker Cables for the I/O and not Instrument Cables. On top of that, make sure they're shielded.

Great explanation Doc. Solutions however missed some plugin mitigation approaches, such as freezing tracks (in Logic) or running a DSP processor like UADs (plugin specific unfortunately.

When i first started recording music i bought a new Imac with logic and a Presonus 2626 interface. I didn't even know what latency was and never learned about it cause i never had to with that setup.

Can going overboard with RAM make a big (BIG) difference? I’m talking 32G and up?

    • @0richbike
      @0richbike 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sumbi Sumbi hi, big RAM might increase the number of tracks and plugins your DAW can reliably handle but as far as I'm aware it won't reduce the latency through an individual IO channel/associated track. Have a look in task manager to see how much RAM is actually being used before buying more. Cheers rich

    • @Doctormix
      @Doctormix  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hey Sumbi, more memory does help, however you need to make sure that the system can take advantage of it all. And again ram is just part of the equation. Low latency is achieved with a combination of hardware capabilities, software and settings.:) But good job if you can get 32Gb!!

More ram doesn't help, I'm sorry to say. The real culprit is stuff like the Windows audio mixer only running every 10ms, and the Windows scheduler prioritizing Bonzi Buddy over Cubase... The fix is to download ASIO4All (a hacked audio driver) or buy an audio interface with ASIO drivers, which bypasses all that stuff.

    • @Doctormix
      @Doctormix  6 ปีที่แล้ว

boptillyouflop I’m sorry to say you’re wrong. If this was the case then it wouldn’t make a difference buying 512Mb of ram instead of 32Gig. The truth is that if you want to process more audio and ron more plugins without interruption of the audio stream you need a combination of processing power and amount of ram, on top of everything else. This is the case for all systems running their audio natively, without the help of dsp cards or co-processors. This is not an opinion, it’s a fact ;-)

Hi m8, Thanks for the fix, Doc ;--)
But at line 4:08 tip nr3, do I understand this well?
Use the mixer(Behringer Xenyxx 1222 USB) between my system-config(pc/Ableton live 10) and audio interface(Focusrite 18i20 2nd Gen)? This also means, that I must connect my monitor speakers on my mixer instead and NOT on my audio-interface 18i20? While recording indeed I still have annoying click/cracks sounds, even when listen music from youtube.
I wonder if it solves the problem..

Now - what i would really like to know, Doc, is: What is a good low DSP 'comfort reverb' plugin to use for overdubbing - especially vocals. This need not be a great reverb - but a 'just good enough' one that will help a vocalist feel like they're in a natural reflective acoustic space. Because i have searched and searched and there's no clear information on this… anywhere that i've found. (thanks again for the good explanation)

  • @jeroenfigee

And ... if you recorded stuff and you wanna start mixing this ...
Make the latency as big as you can which gives you tonnns of room for
    plugins and track-playback.
So you have a Recording Latency-setup and a Mixing Latency setup and
you kinda switch between those 2.
Really handy mindset to remember :-)

Hi, firstly thanks for the great video and explanation on how all this works. I have a Behringer Uphoria UM2 which is pretty cheap, I've fiddled with the settings in fl studio, but there's still noticeable latency when my headphones are directly plugged into that audio interface. If I plug my headphones directly into the laptop there's no latency. Am I better off buying something a bit more expensive like a focusrite 2i2 will that give me a lot lower latency? Cheers 👍

    • @ru9204
      @ru9204 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@destinysworld1689 Hi, this is how I fixed it.... In FL Studio go to options then audio settings, select device as asio4all v2 then click on the small rectangular box under status which should say buffer length and show ASIO panel in yellow. Click on this then another box will appear saying WDM device list - click on the power icon next to where it shows your audio interface, it should now be white instead of greyed out. You can adjust the ASIO buffer size underneath, mine is > 384 < Hope this works for you 👍

Is there anyway to measure the latency and offset a metronome so when I record different instruments they are in sync?
