    The Fujifilm X-M1 could be the best value for money camera on today's market, and in my opinion it's just that. This legacy camera has the Fujifilm's X-Trans 1 sensor and produces some of the best, most filmic photos in today's digital cameras. I love this camera and I talk about its features and show example images.

    I bought one 3 months ago and was amazed by the quality. I use it with both the 27mm pancake and 18mm lens. This combination is so light. I use it exclusively for street photography and the results are so good. Hold down the Q button for 2 seconds and the screen becomes extremely bright for when shooting on sunny days. I’m so stealthy with this camera.

    I enjoy using my X-M1 with XF 35 f/1.4 when I want to get a different look than my pocketable XF10 gives. This combo is so compact, yet so good in low light, allows you to get detailed and beautiful images. I wish there were more assignable buttons, but in general I got used to using pre-configured M, A and S modes for different purposes. I also found very convenient to use AF-L by pushing Fn button to ease frame bulding. And yeah, I miss electronic shutter on sunny days while shooting with f/1.4.

    These are timeless artistic tools, just as their film versions were before them. Really enjoyed this vid, especially watching out before heading out an early morning cityscape shoot with X-E3 and 70-300.

    I bought a slide viewer to put over the back of the camera when shooting outdoors, and for fun a Russian turret viewfinder with four lens settings to mount on the flash shoe if I don't really want to mess with the viewer. The look of the body with that viewfinder on it is wonderful. Very old Leica school. And it really works! Only had my M1 for a year before bumping up to a T-2, but pulled out the M1 to refamiliarize myself with it again. You do forget! Sunny day landscape, get one if those turret viewfinders. Very fun to use. And very clear glass. (It's probably called something else)

    I agree. First of all I don't have the money to buy new/expensive gear on a regular basis. Secondly it seems that people tend to forget how well "old" camera's are or were back then. I recently picked up an X10 for about 130 euro because I was looking for a portable everyday compact camera. I was really pleasently surprised by the quality of the lens en pictures it takes. I don't care that it only has 12 megapixel pictures. It is so much fun for me taking pictures with it and I think the retro look makes it all complete. I do like slowing down to take a picture. This style of shooting fits me perfectly. After a while u get used to it's pros and cons anyway. The cons will maybe even make u more a creative of or better. photographer. Who knows. Beside my X-T1 i'm really happy with my new "old" Fuji companion. I was first looking for an X-M1 but ended up with an X10. Either way the X-M1 also looks fun to shoot with because of the possibilty to uses different lenses.
    Anyway I like watching your videos. Keep up the good work.

    I bought a used X-M1 a few weeks back for $220USD. I've paired it with a TTArtisan 27mm f2.8, mostly to shoot street. So far I love it. At first I struggled with not having a viewfinder, but I can live without it. I also miss the ability to do back button focusing, like I do with my other Fujis. I tried assigning Instant AF to the Fn button, but it wasn't great. I'm glad I have it, and appreciate your recommendation.

  • @dude157

    I have the x100v and x100s. And while I love the V, there are still occasions (like your shoot in this vid) where I grab the X100s, over the V, or any of my other modern mirrorless cameras. There is something about the sensor, and the softer, but still detailed lenses of the old x100 series cameras that give it a film-like look that makes me want to shoot it. I have a tiffen glimmerglass filter that never comes off it. I often take it out with my FE2 and a single roll of film and compare the images. And while they still aren't a true film look they are just as beautiful and as close as I have got with anything else straight out of camera.

    I understand perfectly what you mean about older cameras! I am using an old camera too, the 2014 Sony a6000. Sure, it’s 24mp, way more from what I need but I am editing raw in Lightroom and I can get that filmic look. It was very chip, I found it a few months ago, brand new, for 499€. Paired with the Sony 18-105mm F4 G it works like wonder! And it has EVF. Fujifilm has great JPEG capabilities and iconic design but it’s not my style… there are very few good quality zoom lenses for X mount and are very expensive. It’s very sad because the XF primes are among the best and are generally cheaper than Sony Zeiss or G master equivalents.

    Fuji gear seems to be quite hard to get at a reasonable price range these days and seems to be getting more popular. Maybe that's why the used market prices are going up? It was quite hard to get my hands on the 35mm f2 and 50mm f2 as those are sold out so fast used and new. Seems like the 23mm f2 is easier to come by so I picked one up and am loving it. It's so much sharper than the 16-50mm XC lens that I came with the X-T1 I picked up. I was actually limiting myself to 16mm on the XC lens for a week before the 23mm arrived and am really liking that focal length for small indoor scenarios with my niece and nephew running around. I might get the 16mm f2.8 one of these days after I sell both the XC zoom lenses. Thank you for such a great video!

  • @LyndonPatrickSmith
    @LyndonPatrickSmith 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was of course the last camera with the X-trans I sensor, after the X-Pro 1 and X-E1. I think it has a different processor, however: the EXR Processor II. Maybe the same one that eventually made it to the X-Trans II cameras? I am not sure if this is correct - but I think I read it somewhere. How does it perform compared to your X-E1? Is it faster/focuses more confidently? Are all the film sims the same?

    • @ChrisOrange
      @ChrisOrange  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      to be honest, it feels a tiny bit faster to me - plus the sensor feels a little different. Sometimes, I prefer the sensor in the X-M1 to the X-E1. They are very similar, so I guess it depends on what I'm shooting. I take the X-M1 to commercial shoots sometimes, and would happily use it as a backup camera. But, I probably wouldn't do that with the X-E1.

    • @LyndonPatrickSmith
      @LyndonPatrickSmith 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisOrange thanks for the reply. It sounds like the X-M1 is a perfect bridge between the x-trans I & II sensors, and from what I can tell from looking at old literature and reviews it’s a one-of-a kind sensor and processor combo. Great find! I look forward to seeing some more images from it on your feeds.

    Got one after your first video on the XM-1. Love using it for street and landscape. Seems Fujifilm has dumbed down this camera by omitting simple things like preview exposure in manual mode. I work around this by using a manual focus lens with an aperture ring. I dial in the shutter speed and iso by guessing the exposure, focus, then half press the shutter button to kick in exposure preview then adjust the aperture with my left hand to get the exposure to my liking. Also got a 35mm optical viewfinder for 11 euros from ebay for composing in situation of extreme high dynamic range situations where my eye can see the right picture but it cannot be rendered so well on the screen. Of course the tilting screen is a big plus for composing with foreground objects. I also got the X70 just after this camera, but I keep using the XM-1 because somehow I like the look of the first gen xtrans better.
