@@paulrumohr Because when I go there, it makes me relax in spite to be a city, even if is a small city. Still have the traditional and typical architecture of Algarve. What I like the most is the smell of Tavira, the smell of iode even when we sit to drink a coffee close to the bridges.

There is a spot in Tavira in front of the river where you can sit at an Irish restaurant and enjoy a relaxing sunny afternoon with a glass of wine. This place was so relaxing that we are now enjoying our third month in the eastern Algarve.
We are now in Olhao and loving the place... .even during a covid lockdown in January!

You're right Hank, I'll have to put the Irish in my next video about Tavira. I've spent many a long evening on those seats next to the river. This video was a bit dry, tons more juicy content coming soon.
I'm unsure about Olhao. Could someone give me a true picture, warts and all..
I can still remember the time in 1976, when I was in Tavira on a family holiday, we ate at an all you can eat churrasco, all for the price of 76 escudos(.40 euro). We used to camp at Praia Verde, now its all built up. Its still a public beach, but it is not the same. How times have changed.
Absolutely, Nigel, the Algarve must be nearly unrecognisable since those days.
That’s exactly how it is. You have to be able to respect the Portuguese way. The manner they typically go about business is precisely as Nick details it. So chill and go with the flow. It’s a lot more about lifestyle than what you perceive you have. The world’s a better place when the sun shines as it does “most” of the time here.

Tavira is one of my favorite towns in the Algarve. In fact it is the only town there where we have visited and stayed in on several occasions. I have never really been that interested in the region west of Faro other than a trip to Silves and Sagres some years ago when I first arrived in Portugal. Once the pandemic slows down a bit I want to revisit these places. We had been spending our end of year holidays in Tavira for about five years straight until the pandemic hit. We would rent apartments and stay for a very low price much cheaper than a hotel, especially when you are two families. Up north in Chaves the winter can be quite cold with average highs around 8º while in Tavira they are around 18º. Tourists walk around in shorts and tshirts at the end of December. Not locals of course because for them it is very cold. We really like Tavira because it is not infested with tourists, still has a beautiful traditional architecture, and has relatively low prices for restaurants compared to other places in the Algarve. Inland from Tavira, following the Gilão river, the river valley is lined with orange groves. Very nice.

This is actually great, you look at towns, distances and traveling around in Portugal (Algarve) the same way someone looks at traveling in England (London), HOWEVER no Portuguese person would ever think or look at traveling around Algarve the way you do lol (the underground in London is over 60km wide, and everywhere in that circle is considered London and close by)
Most people in Portugal especially Algarve would never think about going to work in Faro or Albufeira while living in Tavira for example.. thats considered too far for a typical Portuguese person, even tho its just a very very short distance.
Btw Algarve region in Portugal remained independent for many years after Portugal was Portugal under the king, only later it was finally conquered and included in the Portugal map.
Every word in Portuguese dictionary that starts with AL .. means its Arabic word and came from Algarve.

What a joy!!! I am Tavirense and I am so happy to see how nicely you described Tavira. When I was a teen Tavira was too quiet and didn't like being here. When I went to University I ended up going to Fundão close to Serra da Estrela and I realized that I am so so blessed for being from Tavira. I came back as soon as I could. I lived in London 3 years but I am back for good now. I am loving ur videos!

I'd DEFINITELY like to know more about the schools. I have an autistic 12 year old, and a gifted 10 year old. (Yes, life is strange, keep that sense of humor) I really believe we are missing out on life, here in the states.

If you like Indian food, Tavira is the place. In a town of fewer than 20,000 souls there were, at last count, three Indian restaurants. All of them seem to be run by Sikhs. They must exist for the Brits because in general most Portuguese do not appreciate Indian food. They say it is too spicy.
@Justin Case Thanks for the info. I knew about the Indian connection of course. After all even our Prime Minister has a connection to India. I love Indian food, maybe that love coming only second to Mexican food. Give me spicy any time. Up in the north (distrito de Vila Real) Indian food never made it. People tried in Vila Real twice and had to close. I of course didn't come to Portugal to eat Indian food but after thirty years of vitela assada, batata frita e arroz, e couves I will drive any distance to eat something more exotic. I drive for an hour up to Ourense, for example, just to eat Mexican food. I even put mango chutney or Salsa picante on almost everything I eat and I don't have an ulcer. At least not yet. What was curious for me in Tavira is how the Sikhs controlled the restaurants. Even in Tomar, when I stopped at a kebab place there were at least five turban wearing Sikhs behind the counter. I never imagined I would find Sikhs selling kebab in Tomar.
Hey Justin. Naturally some people who live here, or who are thinking about coming over enjoy a bit of variety. We love the local Portuguese food but sometimes expats list after other tastes too. I'm so happy Gourmet Hamburgers eventually made it to the Algarve, although I still eat regular Portuguese food and love it.

I was living in Fuseta for 3 months until 2 weeks ago when Covid house sale made me come back to the UK.
Because of Covid and lockdown, I definitely didn't get to experience the real Portugal.
I wasn't sure about coming back but having watched quite a few of your videos I feel revitalised to come back and give it another good go to see if i want to live there.

You're welcome, it can be a tough place to live but once you have a network of people and have sorted out all the major things and are earning it's a stunning place to live.

There is another golf course between Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. Is call Monte Rei, and it also as a Michellin star restaurant. Is located in the hills north of Vila Nova de Cacela.
Great blog Nick, thanks for taking the time to produce. A couple of things about the Tavira area: 1) the boats to the islands and the small train cost at least one euro per trip. OK for one day, but if you have a family, that cost can really mount up over time. An option is to drive 5/10 minutes to Manta Rota and you are right on a lovely 10km beach. 2) Jack Nicklaus might not forgive you for not mentioning the ab fab Monte Rei Golf Course he designed. Well worth the 140 euro fee.
Thanks for adding that Michael, I know schoolboy error! Apparently Monte Rei Golf Course won best course in Europe or something. Maybe they'll have to invite me over to video myself and some friends playing a round. I'm not that keen on the green fees at all!
@@AlgarveAddicts Hi Nick, thanks for the reply. Monte Rei are notorious for not doing any special deals. However, save up for the Green Fee because the whole experience is worth every cent. When you arrive, they put your clubs on a buggy (price included and essential), then escort you to an amazing practice area where practice balls are included. On the course, it is so privately laid out you may not see anyone else. Typical Nicklaus design for a fade off the tee. Good luck.

Heheh, yes Picanha is wonderful, just be careful when you go to "Rodízios" here (basically all you can eat Brazilian meat). You won't walk for a week afterwards!

@@AlgarveAddicts that would be great. I think it would be lovely to focus on the questions that are not in the school brochures/info sections. How do foreign kids intergrate into the Portuguese community when going to a private/international school versus a public school. Another one is do international schools prepare kids sufficiently to enter Portuguese universities as opposed to sending your kids to the UK or America once they have completed their high school education. Hope this helps

I was just asked to respond to an inquiry about Olhao, and asked to provide background, "warts and all." First, only being here for 4 months does not give me much credibility in terms of knowing the "real" Olhao but my wife and I bought a place here after only 6 days of a January month long visit. Even then, the weather was wonderful compared to Sweden but we have been to many places in Portugal and explored the Algarve a bit and nothing was as attractive as this place for us. We like that Olhao is smaller in scale and super walkable for everything we need. Our sense is that is is more of a "regular" place with more local people here than in other Algarve locations. Equity is one significant issue. With emerging development on the Ria Formosa, the contrast between the local olhao population with many not having much in terms of income with new condos on the shoreline means there are some security issues that reflect that equity imbalance. This long so I'll stop but I can say overall, we would not wish to be anywhere else! Thanks to Nick for opening this conversation.

Ha! 12 degrees! That's a nice spring/autumn day here in Canada. Believe me ... you don't know what "cold" really is! Try Canada in February: -30 C; -45 with the windchill! Love your videos though. Keep them coming!

Thank you for covering Tavira! When you do a segment on Real Estate can you include rentals as well? Tavira looks like a quiet town in general. I am more interested in whether a town has culture such as the arts, museums, yoga, good restaurants or cafe's, movies, theater, dance schools etc. I don't expect you to have that information but just sharing some of my needs.
Hi Caren, it's good to slot that info into my "things to do" section. I think in a few months I could do an hour long video on each town :) Regarding rentals, I'm calling a couple of friends today who do long term rentals, so I'll slot that into the real estate or make a separate video about it.
I bought a small house in Tavira in 2019 for winter stays, not visited since March 2020. There are many artists and galleries, Artesia Galleria particularly, some cafes with live music and in summer musical performances in the Republic square by the Roman bridge. A cineplex cinema in the Grand Plaza mall for Live at the Met, pre Covid and international films. There is a rich and diverse cultural life there, including UK, Swedish, Norwegian and Canadian ex pats who are now residents. When travel is easier, twice a year visits for winter escape and extension of summer months in September and October.

Hi there, mmm the pressure is ON for the real estate video :) There is surf in Tavira, but it only works when the levante (or sueste) blows (it's a south easterly which brings short period swell up from Gibraltar). Tavira doesn't work that well with the normal Atlantic storm swell that marches down the west coast.

Thanks! Yes it's my gorgeous daughter ❤️ Actually it IS quite a thing. Often outside Intermarche shops you'll see them, but also in other spots.

I am 75 years of age,living in Sydney Aust. and been contemplating a move to either Portugal or Spain. Whilst Tavira seems like a pleasant town to retire to and listening information regarding Hospitals or lack of as far as numbers is concerned,it puts doubt in my mind as to whether it is the right place to retire at my age. Perhaps I’m wrong and shouldn’t worry- I don’t really know.
Hi Alexander, wow, that sounds like a big move. Loulé may be a better bet for you if you're concerned about hospitals. It's always best to come and visit if you can first, but Sydney is a long way away!

I found your Video collection because i'm a Swiss Expat living in Thailand and i'm getting way too much of all the chaos,military coups,dirt in the air or water and danger here in Thailand. I think after 16years here, it's time with 59 to make my last move and find a place with more peace ,soul,basic universal human rights,democracy and quality of life.Thailand is getting worse in almost anything and more expensive as well,if u want a little quality. Besides Switzerland, where i was born and grow up until 28(best country but too cold and expensive),I lived in exiting big US, in beautiful Ecuador and even more beautiful Colombia, now 16 year Thailand. I just need more European stye back in my life. I hear there where changes in taxing foreign pension income.It's not 10years 0% anymore, right? I get 2 Swiss State pensions. How is the pension income tax situation now? I really got a lot of great infos ,inside to the Algarve from U. I need to know a lot more. I think i will visit the Algarve in May 2023. For a 59 year old,with some med. problems from an accident and type2 Diabetes,want a Car,need good Hospital,fresh clean food(not so much seafood), good Internet and Satellite TV,like a quite modern Condo or a little house,both with covered parking... I like Tavira, but am very much tempted by Lagos. By this time next year, I hope to have made a decision to move, assuming this Covid situation is under control.
Lagos is a pain if you need to access the airport ! It’s also much colder in the Winter. I’d choose Central or Eastern Algarve every time if you want to live here! (Western Algarve is fine for vacations !😂)
I like the surrounding area, being close to Sagres, Aljezur and Monchique. Quite a range of scenery. The hour or so drive to the airport isn't a deal breaker, and I'm used to the cold anyhow!
It's always a personal choice but the weather is definitely warmer and milder in the east. Personally I love Lagos, because of the proximity to surf.
@@marco_cee_ Monchique looks amazing. It would be on my shortlist, no doubt. Tavira currently near the top of my list, along with Madeira.
Hi Nick...thanks for another great video...would be great if you could do one on the infrastructure of utilities in the Algarve...for example in North America we take it for granted that we have a natural gas line connected to our home for heat and cooking, etc. but it seems to be a rare thing in Portugal and people have to have propane bottles delivered, etc. and very small hot water tanks usually mounted in a kitchen cabinet. Do you have garbage trucks pick up from your home or do you have to take it yourself to a depot?..Just curious what towns in the Algarve would have the most modern amenities, and how you personally cope with some of these issues...Cheers
Thanks for watching Shawn. I'm not super clued up on gas but I will keep it in mind for the future. Actually, I'll discuss it on our Facebook group (Algarve Addicts). Regarding garbage, there are central bins that are cleared by a truck and taken to sorting centers almost daily (depending if you're in the middle of nowhere or in a town). We also have recycling bins all over the place.
@@AlgarveAddicts Thanks Nick; I had read on another forum that you can run out of hot water and wonder if people modify their system to alleviate this or put in a bigger heater in a closet, etc. A bit of a learning curve for us not familiar with the local environment...Cheers
Heheh, I've been here 20 years and have never run out of hot water. If you do, you'll need to install a bigger system, simple.

Hi Nick. We love your channel and have received a lot of great tips. We are in the process of purchasing an investment property in Tavira and leveraging the Golden Visa. We will be renovating it and then plan on doing short term rentals. How about relocating to Tavira, opening a minute activity of some sort (wine/tapas maybe) and living there but not driving. No car. Where do you suggest I should look? Tavira where? I planned a week in Faro but was thing of switching to Tavira for a few days next June 2023. I saw there's a 45 minute train from Faro to Tavira, then what? Thank you for any useful hints!

I would be happy to do that but we think we are heading north around June 10th. I need my second vaccine shot and folks here tried hard to help but without actual residence, it is not possible so returning to Sweden is now a higher priority.
I am working on something you might enjoy if I can put it together but the first run will be in September.
