If you love Nature, good weather and relaxing, Alentejo is the choice. I recently moved to Alentejo and I'm super happy, specially because I love nature and not so much crowds. There is something magical in Alentejo, hard to describe. It changed me to a better and happier person. People here are amazingly helpful, friendly and relaxed. The weather is fantastic most of the year but in the peak of winter and summer we get uncomfortable temperatures but never last too many days. Spring here it's a paradise. and much, much more. Recommended.
You are totally wrong about Alentejo. In what bases have you set comments about one of the most beautiful and rich areas of the country ?! Alentejo is not only Evora, many other places like Estremoz, de Monsaraz, Elvas, are just beautiful and so special. Many foreigners have chosen Alentejo precisely for being extremely safe, best food, wine and the people is unique in the sense of being so welcome, simple and down to earth. Investigate more before you comment about this wonderful region of Portugal
Enjoyed your video and your assessment of some of the options that one has when choosing a place to live. Ofcourse, it all comes down to what one is looking for. I opted for Lagos for the reasons you spoke of. Looking forward to checking out eastern Algarve in January. Enjoy!
Outstanding ignorance around the beauty of Alentejo. If you want to experience typical Portuguese life and meet some of the kindest people (locals not American expats) then Alentejo will provide this. Keep your negative viewpoints to yourself. Very happy living in Alentejo region.
Your opinion is not correct please go and visit Alentejo also and speak afther living there for a month or 2, then you can speak of what you really know, thanks
Fellow Canadian from Vancouver Island 😊 Thanks for informative video as planning same trip. Love your accommodations, ( can't find link but would love to stay same place) Happy found you both on youtube! (Following 😊) Happy travels!
Firstly, I would recommend that anyone moving to another country LEARN the language, others do not have to learn English and facilitate expats. Secondly, Cascais and Sintra are NOT Lisbon, they are individual towns that are close to the capital.... I was staggered by some of some these comments, many expats do not wish to live with other expats, so your comments re the Alentejo and Monsanto were just pathetic.
Exactly!!! Portugal belongs to the Portuguese, not to expats!! Don't expect things to revolve around you. YOU need to do the adapting, not the other way around!!
Love your videos , thank you so much , Im living in Lisbon , have accumulated a few things but not a lot, would you have any suggestions of how i can move my belongings to the Algarve ?
You cannot compare cities like Porto or Lisbon to a village like Monsanto, how many villages in the States have a hospital or supermarket? Also, there are ex pats living there and nearby. Not sure how you did your research but maybe try harder.
I really DID not like why you point 2 places for not living there ( and I live in the Algarve so not in Alentejo and not in Monsanto to be clear) These are places that many people will look for instead, Portugal is widely inhabited for most of the Country except the coast. Inland is empty. But you cannot compare Lisbon or Porto where, by the way, not many people speaks English, I hive lived 2 years in the North! to Alentejo, 2 such different why of life. Of course this is your opinion and this is mine. And if one want to live here should learn portugese to integrate otherwise it will be only in an English spoken community called Expat Ball.
Some people like myself can't learn another language. It's definitely not from lack of trying, I just can't retain any new information due to a lack of short term memory issues. English is the one language that's almost universally spoken.
@@CandyKG28 yes, I speak english in english speaking native Countries but I do learn the local language if I think I want to live there. I surely understand the difficulty you might have found it, but stil I have man y american friends who studied hard and got the A2 test for the citizenship.Maybe you did not find the right teacher....(I am n to one, just for not misunderstand me!)
If you’re a US citizens living in Portugal, respecting 100% of their culture is a must. That falls in the definition of language and traditions. Just because you are saving dollars to stretch your retirement doesn’t mean you should exploit another country. Yes your dollar is helping their current economy, however, have you considered the true impact you have on the locals?
Fair people should stop seeing borders and bureaucratic red tapping and be open to the idea that no matter where you are in the world it's expensive and no one wants to live poor. However we have 1 life and 1 planet to see and explore. Absolutely no reason you have to live and die in your "domestic" country. The world is ours, but unfortunately the systems at hand and even the humans we share it with work against the common goal of "living a life".
@@valdez19kilo hey, I heard northern Ukraine is pretty this time of year. Or, try southern Russia. It’s is nice. Live there for a few years. Be freeeee….there.
Lisbon avoid to the portuguese Porto the best city to eat and shoop in Portugal Caldas da Rainha ok, but not for me Lagos is, yet, a good Algarve Tavira is amazing Monsanto is one of the historical villages of Portugal Alentejo is the best place to be retired
I'm sorry but the painful arrogance of "finding a place where they don't speak my language, only *their own*" FFS If you're gonna live in another country you should at least learn the basics and respect the culture.
The grass is not greener on the other side! Warning to all those who plan to retire in other countries! You will need to take into consideration the fact that as an American you are familiar with America and the place that you are going to is not familiar to you. All these descriptions of wonderful beaches eternal sunshine and cheap prices are attractive. But you need to be aware of the following problems that you are likely to encounter. 1. You will need much more money than they tell you. You are already used to a certain way of life that requires money. You would want to buy a car and you would want to go to shows, concerts and other forms of entertainment. 2. If you don't know the language it will be easy to overcharge and cheat you. They tend to charge you more if you are an American, and they will know that you are an American. You will stand out like a sore thumb unless you are the type that melts in the crowd. 3. You will have to deal with a flawed and painfully slow bureaucracy, which is much less efficient than in the U.S. and you can easily fall into despair. You will have to fill out so many forms and wait in long lines. 4. If you are impressed by the beaches and the sunshine everywhere, let me tell you that you will not go to the beach every day. In many of these locations it rains in the summer, sometimes for more than two weeks non-stop. 5. Most of these countries are hot, humid and very uncomfortable. And if you go to the northern countries of Europe or Asia it will be very cold. And don’t forget the pollution and the contaminated air that you will breathe. 6. Services in most countries are not as reliable as they are in the U.S. They will not give you your money back for flawed service. 7. Crime is widespread almost everywhere and believe me, it's worse than in the U.S. 8. Health care is much inferior to that of the U.S. You might need additional insurance and that costs a lot of money. Worse, you will have to wait months to see a specialist. 9. Not knowing the language will cause you to be unable to communicate and you will be lonely. 10. Prepare to have numerous interruptions in the supply of electricity, internet and sometimes even water. 11. If you are looking for a woman, you might be trapped when she would marry you only for your money. She might also expect you to support her family. This happens in many traditional countries like Thailand and others. 12. Visa regulations can change very often and you might have to leave the country instantly. 13. Please be aware of the fact that Americans are NOT welcome everywhere and you might become a victim of scams, theft or violence. 14. Most of these countries, especially Asian are very dirty and you will not be able to enjoy street food. 15. People that will serve you will always expect TIP no matter how small the service is, especially since you are an American. You will not be able to avoid it and if you do, they will hate you. 16. Hot countries like Malaysia and Indonesia have numerous insects, lizards, scorpions and poisoned snakes in addition to flies that will drive you crazy. You will spend long time trying to kill them. IN SHORT, THINK LONG AND HARD BEFORE YOU GO. There are so many good things in America that you are taking for granted now. Take my advice, stay where you are or move to another location in America. Be smart and thrifty customer and don't buy anything that you don't need. If you want to visit other countries, take a trip once in a while. Don't make the mistake of your life. Moving alone costs a fortune and there will be many documents to read and sign. Stay in good old America, even if the prices are high, our politics sucks and you don't like Trump. Remember, all Western countries are very expensive, while the Non-European ones are neither safe, nor clean. So don't be tempted and stay put! The only time I would recommend moving to another country is if you have family or friends who will help protect you from horrible things that might happen. Kapisce? Good luck!

I'm looking for a beach town that is not very crowded and swimming is possible with warm waters❤do you have any recommendations?
Everything you wrote I had a feeling too, usually places that are "bad" for the average person, are gems!
You're totally right.
If you move to any area in Portugal or in any country, you should learn the local language and not the other way around .
Absolutely agree. It’s called respect
Yeah
I'm teaching myself now. I enjoy it.
100%!!
Couldn't agree more. Such an arrogant person in this video. Just awful.
I would add Madeira Island as one of the best places to live.
Wonderful. How to find Portugal ExPat Facebook? I'm a bit nervous leaving the US on my own. Thank you for your informative & lovely video!

Monsanto is not a "xisto" village! in fact is a granitic one; Piodão is a "xisto" village (one of the most known in PT).
Having just come from Monsanto I would have to disagree. Monsanto is very small. Tiny even. But don’t miss it. It’s magical!

I was in Silves in february. I Loved the city and it was so quiet in the off season.
Come live in São João de Ver, it's cheaper(an 3 room apartment is 140k euros) and is 20 minutes from Oporto!

Portugal is fed up with TH-camrs using negative clickbait to make money.

Ummm no. There are many, many beautiful relaxing places for retirees to go. And Not just from the US. And Not just Portugal.
