    Hi, I'm Nick and I've been living in the Algarve for 20 years. Today I'm showing you what life is really like in Vilamoura, as apparently many people are keen to buy houses close by to this beach side resort town in the Algarve. I hope you enjoy it!
    Some of these links may give me a small payment if you purchase (at no extra cost to you), so if they help you, they help me. Thanks for your support!

    Hey, Nick. This is great! As I mentioned before, I spent 15 years in Portugal (Tomar 5, Lisbon 10) and whenever I go back now, I always stay in an apartment right above that Spa you drove past (Edificio Tivoli, which belongs to a friend of mine -the apartment, not the Spa!). I never liked Vilamoura at first, but it really has grown on me. I also remember walking through Quarteira when there was only the beach and the first row of bars/shops and no other construction. The no-mans-land you spoke of was a shanty town occupied by gypsies. Totally different now, eh? I really miss it. Already looking forward to your next video!! Thanks, Nick

    Have lived between Vilamoura and UK for 11 years. Vilamoura ìs modern and affluent but not intimidating, the Old Village is worth a mention if only for its originality. Quarterira is as you say authentic Portugal. Vilamoura as it sits between makes a great base and within easy reach of the N125 taking you to Tavira for the one day or Silves in the other direction for another. Shopping malls if wanted in Guia and Faro-20 mins either way. Fantastic location!

    My father bought a small holiday cubicle house near The Old Course in '73. When we went to the harbour, there was basically just hotel Dom Pedro. We were allowed to use the pool of the Hotel Appartemento do Golfe, as we were returning guests each year. It was all laid back and friendly.
    I think our small development and neighbouring Aldeio do Golf were the only developments in those years.
    I still can smell the pine trees, love how the higher parts are built into the woods, so to speak.
    On special occasions we went to restaurant Casa Velha in Quinta do Lago. It was an cosy old farm house on top of an otherwise empty hill... Ahh those were the days...

    OMG, that video was so good Nick, when I think that we were going on holidays in the late 80's with my parents there, and look at what it has become... A very astonishing city, actually, each time when we were visiting, all the area was under construction we didn't have any clue what's so ever was going on there. With enormous billboards advertising "Vilamoura Four season" or Vilamoura Private Golf". And a long and huge wooden bridge was leading us to the beach, it was like being in a sort of Vietnam city, so unusual... Oh? I do remember also, there is place which I love the most "Pedras Del Rey" So stunning, we used to take a little train (for free! and it was a steam powered vintage train! ) to head on the beach, do you think it is still there? Oh well, it was also a very long time ago, I don't blame you if you never heard about... Thank you so much for your videos, back then I didn't realise how much beautiful this area was. Happy New Year! Good Wishes.

    • @loganjukes8820
      @loganjukes8820 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@chaitusatbhai5036 Hi Chaitu. To be honest, the roads are not the most comfortable or the safest. I have seen a couple of designated cycle lanes on the streets, but mostly you will need to ride on the road if you want to get from town to town. There are a lot of potholes on the sides of the roads and some roads are narrow. With that being said, the coastline is absolutely gorgeous and is perfect for mountain biking. Once you're off the roads and on the cliffs or in the countryside, its beautiful. I would definitely recommend it. Just be careful on the road. Lots of people cycle there and you will see bikes flying past constantly, but just be aware of the potholes and the car drivers. When I cycled from Albufeira to Villamoura, I was on a busy road for about 30% of the ride, the rest was on country roads and beautiful cliff sides.

    I have spent the last four winters walking from Vilamoura to Quarteira and back every day giving directions to people. Eat in Quarteira, not Vilamoura. Nobody ever talks about the caterpillars. They are mosquitos gone nuclear. If you are golfing in February/March or even walking off the sidewalk, watch out for giant conga lines of caterpillars that will leave you seriously scratching for weeks. And they can be dangerous especially if you have a pet. I hope to move to Quarteira once the pandemic ends, For me, Quarteira is paradise.

    Great video, thank you! I've booked a weeks holiday in Vilamoura next Summer 2022. I'm planning on moving to The Algarve so will explore and find a base. Your videos are proving to be so helpful for this! Have you considered making a video for new expat arrivals on building up friends on The Algarve? I.e what groups, communities, clubs, activities are there to meet and make like minded friends. I understand you have a family and you're well established, so it's probably not a top priority for you, but perhaps you can interview someone that built up friendship circles over time and explore what channels are available. Internations is a good start but what else is there that some of us newbies could learn about?

    • @AlgarveAddicts
      @AlgarveAddicts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The best way to find friends is do something you love (whether it's playing chess, painting, surfing or pilates) and finding other like minded people who do that. If nothing comes to mind, take up a hobby like padel tennis or gym or even walking the dog. You'll soon see people doing the same and start to connect. Interested to know why you chose Loule to live in? Which is inland right? I am planning to buy a second home in Algarve as soon as I can get back out there. Have stayed in a number of places at this stage mainly Villamoura..which is soul less I think. Im Looking for more traditional location and ocean front is priority for me, I’m smitten by Carvoeiro and planning to take a medium term rental there to seriously try it out as a potential 2nd home location. Any advice appreciated. ...BP

      Hi Brid, I actually loved in Carvoeiro initially for a few years and loved it. It does get quite busy in August but it's a lovely village. I chose Loulé because it was close to more work opportunities in Almancil and surrounds. Inland is always better value and often more authentic.

      Thank you for your replies everyone. The idea is to rent out the place during peak season and use it for myself off-peak. I've been told to stick to the larger cities as they will still be open for business in winter. I'm thinking that Praia da Rocha, being so close to Portimao, might offer the best of both worlds. Does Alvor remain mostly open in winter?

      @@martymendes1 hi, Martin. From what I remember (it's been a few years now), it's pretty much open year round, but from a rental point of view, it's very slightly off the well beaten track of P da Rocha. Having said that, I don't recall it having the steep steps down to the beach like the other two places you like. Anyway, worth checking out.

      My suggestion is chill out. The Algarve is many things to many people. At its heart are the locals, making their livelihoods and enjoying a beautiful homeland. Vilamoura is enjoyed by all: locals, Portuguese on hols and folk from Europe and wider. Yes, it caters to Brits on a big scale but it actually merges into Quarteira, which is v much Portuguese. I love both sides of "Quartmoura".
